The cache requires maintenance and as I no longer live in the area, regrettably, I have to archive this one.

This was my second time looking for this historic cache. We looked before looking again and then expanding our search area a little further.Persistence paid off and the cache container was located. We could not add our name to a very wet logbook, so I have attached a photo as evidence. The plastic container has been melted in an area by a bushfire and could do with replacing and a new logbook. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache in a wonderful and historic part of Horn Island. A favourite point from us too.

Hard one to find with all the tall grass and green ants but enjoyed seeing the site

Pprime and Fangsoki arranged a trip to the Torres Straits to celebrate my upcoming 75th birthday,

This cache was one which we really wanted to get to and Fangsoki had discussed it with the Vanessa from the Heritage Museum before we had left home. He had arranged for Vanessa to take us on a tour to the area. It turned out that we were to have a personal tour with her in lieu of the group tour.

We parked close to the search area and headed into the bush. It wasn't long before Pprime discovered the cache. We showed the hide to Vanessa so she can help future cachers if required. We then continued on to inspect the work that Vanessa and her helpers have done to maintain and restore the WW2 installations in the area. It is really worth the effort to get here and have a look.

Up to the Strait with Fangsoki and celebrating Crew 153's own milestone - today is about Horn Island. Guided by the amazing Vanessa from the Gateway Resort Museum we scored a personalised visit out here to find this cache - yep all good here. It is hidden in amongst rocks, about 7m west of the entrance to the bunker area here (ie: back down the hill towards the road). On the edge of the rocks closest to the bunkers. Cache found in top-notch condition.

We then took in the rest of the area, the cleaned up and signposted and refurbished parts. The history is amazing, and the museum back in town equally so - a must see.

Thanks Bigfellow for entertaining me at this location.
Cool *{Overall find #10747}* Cool

I came while visiting from Canberra. After bashing around in the bush for a while and been attacked by green ants I gave up.

1MinnieMoo and I had been staying on Horn Island. We wanted to grab this geocache. But I hadn't had much luck finding a method of getting out there that didn't involve us walking the 7 or 8km to GZ and burning ourselves to a cinder in the hot sun.

The WW2 tour seemed to be the go. I have to say - I don't regret going for this. Our tour guide, Liberty, was a very friendly and good tour guide and knew about the geocache.

Liberty showed us the best way to approach the cache while he continued the tour with the others in the group. We made our way toward GZ. By the Grace of God, I found the cache in no time at all. We signed the log and took some photos of the nearby structure.

Liberty was kind enough to drive us to the airport after checking out his museum (for a slightly extra price). He and his wife, Vanessa, have done some great work in preserving the war history of the area.

Some phone numbers that might help other people (coz they weren't forthcoming for me!) :

Horn Island Taxi : 1300 664 875
Hire a van : 07 4069 1586
Heritage Tour : 07 4090 3333

A great geocache. It would be plain rude not to favourite it. This is now my most northerly cache in Australia.. or Queensland. Also - it is currently the 996th oldest active cache in Queensland. TFTC Bigfellow Smile

15/10/21 Find #5035
After a huge day in the heat around Thursday Island yesterday, Fangsoki and I were glad we had decided to wisely book a WWII tour to this spot today with Vanessa and Liberty. Liberty collected us from the museum, and brought us up here with a wealth of information to share. He also knew where the geocache was (although had no idea about the one at Green Hill Fort, which he also does tours to). So pulling the tour bus up, Liberty let us all off, and while he told the rest of the group about what we would see there today, he pointed us towards the cache.
We headed over, getting a viewing of this bunker, which the rest of the tour did not see, before finding the cache, then returning to the group looking at the sandbags and onto the gun.
An interesting location, made all the more interesting by Lindsay’s history knowledge up here. I’d highly recommend joining the tour to anyone heading here!
Thanks for the cache Bigfellow.

Mr Riddell had to ward off the green ants while writing the log.

I got to the location - see photos - but I could not find the actual cache. I had to leave after 15 minutes as I am travelling by bicycle and I had to get to Wasaga to catch the ferry. Thank you for taking me here - it is an interesting part of our war history. The museum on Horn Island was excellent too

On a tour and forgot to check the 3xact location before we set out. Realised it was there as we got back on the bus. Bother!,

We were near GZ while on an Outback Spirit tour and with Vanessa Seekee as our local guide around the old military installations. We had time for a short search and found the container quite quickly. TFTC

We are lucky enough to have very special geofriends who very kindly offered to look after our furbaby while we headed to the tip of Cape York and detoured to some lovely National Parks along the way. We attempted any geocaches which we passed along the way and this was one of themSmile

Very many thanks to all those who have placed and maintain their caches in this very remote part of the country[^]

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Horn island and learning about some of the prolific military history to be found hereabouts. Many thanks for the hide Bigfellow[^]

Far out...almost gave up but glad to have been in a group of 8 and 5 kept looking. Great cache full of interesting treasurers. Wish I had something more interesting to exchange. Left a HK Disneyland ticket and Brunei business card. Was looking in trees but it is at ground level...Look around rocks! It was in really good condition. TFTC! Smile

I was on a WW2 heritage tour with tour guide Vanessa. She asks all the bus "who does geocaching?" I responded yes and she gave me the hint from which I located the cache cold without the GPSr assisting. Unfortunately, the pen I used was a gift from my daughter (even engraved with my name) was lost. After logging, I knew I had the pen in my hand but I have not seen it since Sad

Thanks for placing the cache in this very historic area.

Took a bit of time to locate - lots of long grass. Nice spot, worth the walk.

16-Jun-14
Found cache, along with a million green ants! Site quite overgrown and directions somewhat misleading. With healthy legs and some enthusiasm, the round trip walk from the airport can be done in just over an hour.

14-May-14
Very disappointed that we were unable to venture into the very long grass after travelling so far but I wasn't game enough. Vanessa the tour guide said we were in the right spot but unfortunately they hadn't cleared the area. I will add a photo to show the spot. Very interesting spot to look at all the World War 2 stuff. I sure did learn things I knew nothing about.

14-May-14
Didn't find as weeds far too long for me to go into. Vanessa the tour guide said she would have had the area cleared if she had know geocachers would be on the tour. Very interesting tour worth doing.

19-Jul-13
We went on a great tour to Thursday and Horn Islands and we were given the opportunity to locate this cache as there was a stop to look at the grave and the fortifications here.
We managed to separate ourselves from the group for a short period of time and locate this cache. The tour guide, Vanessa, who is an historian of the Horn Island area and curator of the local museum is aware of the cache and talked to us about geocaching, after she noticed the GPS. We almost had the opportunity to locate the other cache on Horn Island however we ran short of time.
Thanks Bigfellow.

I wanted to check on the cache after the previous person couldn't find it. Found the cache nice and dry however it was a little smelly being the wet season. Grass around the cache was extremely long.

Well I ducked out to the sight while I was waiting for a flight out. Found the sight but did not find the cache. Scratched around like a bandicoot for 20 minutes then had to rush off so as to not miss the plane. Next time I will be able to go directto the sight and spend more time looking.

Our 3rd of 3 finds on our trip to the Torres Strait.
We went looking for this one whilst waiting for our plane that wasn't due until the afternoon.
Easy find, but a little overgrown. I thought they brought tours to this place?
Took TB, and two geocoins as these items haven't been moved in a while.
Left Plutonian TB and a marble.
