In the area doing the tourist and cacher thing. This was one we ticked off the list. Had to broaden the search a little TFTC

Long wet grass and looks like new fencing, so unsure if has been removed or I’m just having a blonde look.

Bit of a late drive out to grab this one, but it was a case of better late than never. Once at GZ, the cache was quickly spotted and signed.

Stopped to find this cache on my way out from camping next to the dam.
First find of 2019
Thanks for the cache

Well, no information to share on why the road is still shut but.....
There is an old dam that we went to see, a magnificent piece of work, mainly brickwork
done over an hundred years ago. The dam wall is totally awesome as is the gorge and the Belubula River. The dam is in the reserve that has been closed to the public. We accessed it
from a reserve upstream and walked down beside the river. This involved river crossings
and getting reasonably wet as there were blackberries, stinging nettles and thistles to avoid.

This road was supposed to be me escape route from the nearby reserve today.
Some damn mining company has taken the area over Sad
Worse yet, there doesn't seem to be any mining activity happening Twisted

At least this cache was a quick find at the barricade Big Grin

Found as part of an Orange and surrounds geomission with fitzy_1965, AngelG27 & Sol de Lune (signed as FASS to save time & spaceBig Grin) Top weather, great company and lots of laughs meant for an epic weekend of caching all round! Big GrinCoolBig Grin

Returned to this one when it was muggle free and it was on with the search. We had to deploy a variety of geotools at a couple of angles to get this one out. Eventually the hide revealed itself and then gave it some running repairs Cool

Thanks for the hide, Smelly Boot Smile

A weekend trip up through this area with SpecimenX, AngelG27 and fitzy_1965 to grab a few caches up around these parts. Covered a bit of ground and found a great range of caches. Always good to get away on a group caching run. A group effort to grab this one from it's hidey hole, but grab it we did and all was good. I think AngelG27 has summed it up......

Thanks again Smelly Boot

11249. Headed up to the Orange region with AngelG27, Sol de Lune and specimenX ("FASS") for a fun-filled weekend of caching. Lots of caches found, a few not found, and a lot of laughs had as we toured around over 2 full days as far north as Wellington which resulted in 124 finds for me.

After being muggled out at Shame shame shame, we did the 3 caches in the nearby reserve then came back here to find it muggle free. That was when the real struggle began ! Took a while to coax this one out as the magnet had fallen off. But mange we did. Log signed, cache returned with some repair work done to the magnet and we were off to the next one.

Thanks again Smelly Boot !!

Fitzy_1965, SpecimenX, Sol de Lune and I (logged as "FASS") headed from Canberra to Orange and surrounds for a caching blitz over the 30-31 July weekend. We logged around 1000kms in the Geo-Jeep, selecting those caches that Fitzy had not previously found. I scored around 130 caches for the trip. The visit was characterised by blue skies, very green paddocks, lots of water off and on the road, a fair amount of mud, and good company! Still plenty of caches to collect and scenic spots to explore on a return trip. Thanks to my fellow travellers for a fun weekend, and the COs for all their efforts in putting out and maintaining the caches.

56th for the day at 1450 (61st for the trip). After being thwarted by muggles at "shame shame shame" we headed into the nearby reserve to collect a few caches and came back to a muggle free zone. Just as well, as the magnet fell off the container, and our efforts to retrieve it pushed it in further! So with a joint effort, and some fence hopping by SDL, the container was finally retrived - phew! We re-attached the magnet with some double-sided tape that SpecimenX had, and placed the container carefully back out of sight - ready to be found again. Thanks Smelly Boot!

Orange trip April 2016. My search for an overnight spot brought me to this amazing reserve. So many places are being shut off to the public. Looks like mining by the signs here now.

Thanks.

This was a nice easy find and on opening the cache found lots of upset ants and plenty of ant eggs. We emptied out the container, signed the log and put it back into place. TFTC.

Now this is an interesting spot, although it would be much more interesting if the gate wasn't locked. We heeded the instructions of the signs and didn't proceed any further today, the weather wasn't the best in any case.

The logs sheets look like they have been wet/damp and could do with replacing as they are very fragile.

Thanks for bringing us off the highway to discover this spot, maybe one day we will be able to get a bit closer to the dam.

We found a really nice campsite at Bakers Shaft and after a bit of a late getaway we again started heading north aiming for the pprass camping event this weekend picking up caches along the way. We pulled up here and you could see that they definitely didn't want you to go any further. After reading one of the previous logs with the story of the history of the area we have to agree that it's a real shame that a mining company can block off an area and restrict public access just in case they want to start mining again. On the upside the cache was a nice easy find and our name has been added to the log.
Thanks once more Smelly Boot

We thought we should be able to drive this way, but that was not the case. Fond the cache anyway, in the midst of cobwebs.

Quick find for the end of a great day. The lady came driving up to warn us not to go any further and that the ranger would fine us if he caught us. There was another car parked at the gate with no-one is sight so we are guessing that they were in the reserve??? Cache was damp and mouldy but didn't have any spare paper. Tried to dry it out as best as we could. TFTC

Agree it is a shame you can't take a walk down to the river from here.

19-Jul-12
This area was originally a mining region and where the road eventually crossed the river there was once a community based around the mines near the river. This has long since been overgrown and inevitably, time has taken its toll with only a few remnants of equipment left. After mining ceased the area was opened to the public as a reserve for camping, walking etc. There is a small and historic weir as well as a great waterfall.

At some point in the last 20 years it was closed off because a mining company had plans to recommence mining at the site and it doesn't appear to have been touched since. I suspect another reason it has remained shut is for safety reasons. As well as the deaths as mentioned below, the weir is very old and there are no safety barriers around the wall or the rocks around. The costs involved for council to maintain the site and its safety would be too high. Keeping feral, troublemaking muggles out would also be an issue.

From the locked gate and very threatening warning sign, it is about a 1km walk to the weir while the waterfall (about 500m further downstream) is now very hard to reach as most access has become overgrown with blackberries. It is still quite an enjoyable walk to the weir while the waterfall can be a bit more of a challenge. Not that I would encourage anyone to go down there... Wink

Searched a while...dodging the spider webs before Mr Bushies2 found it...oh yes it's shame to see that gate firmly shut. Thanks Smelly Boot.

Locked gates and no dam to see. It's a shame indeed!
Caching duties completed quickly before continuing our exploration of the area.

Thanks.

Cache was found quickly. After reading the description of the area beyond the gate I was intrigued. Apparently the dam has silted up. No wonder it's a dangerous spot. Anyway, nice to be out this way.

a easy find.. chain had been cut (no I dident) gate just happened to be open so I couldn't see the signs on it. ..went all the way down there is a gravel pit or maybe an open cut but it has been rejuvenated. good track. nice spot ...Thank you

Nice quick find. was pondering why they had triple padlocked the gate when an old lady drove over the paddock towards me.

She told me I was not allowed to go through there, and I said not to worry was just playing a game. After explaining the game I asked her the question that we all want the answer to. Why is this great spot locked off.

It turns out that a while ago over a series of years there were 3 drownings. A 13, 15, and 19 year old. Not doing anything stupid just jumping into a deep pool that unfortunately had water pushing down into it They had no way of getting to the surface. So the danger of the spot plus the mining company taking over it and worrying about liability, effectively has shut off what I was told to be a beautiful slice of this earth. Had a great chat. Hope that has answered some questions.

The sign about mining activity is faded but that chain lock is as strong as ever. A quick find, thanks.

Not being locals we have no idea what is going on down here. The sign says mining but GE shows nothing.

Thanks Smelly Boot for the cache.

Well this is odd, a weird place to come
There must be meaning to some
A will google when I get back
Cause history for this place, I lack
But with that sign and a gate you can’t ram
There is more to this place than a silly dam

Another Smelly Boot Special. Thanks Smelly Boot. If you take the drive down to the end of Bakers Rd over the next couple of weeks you will see a large drill rig parked by the side of the road. They were just setting up when I went past, obviously looking for more sparkly stuff.

After finishing a training course early it was a last minute decision to grab some caches on the way home.

It is a shame that these areas get locked up.

Now off to the unlocked area for a look about.

Lots of sheep watching through the fence while we undertook a quick search for this one.
The cache was soon in hand and the log signed before we headed off to pick up several more in close proximity.

Thanks Smelly Boot for the cache.

Shame, Shame , Shame is dead right. Mr Stilllookin has many memories of taking a dip down the road. It would have had to be one of the nicest spots in the area and that is saying something as there are many great spots around these parts and Mr Stilllookin has camped all around these parts for many years.
Anyhow its a shame to have locked the public out in the name of what appears finding more gold.
Thanks for the cache.

Found itBig Grin! On a bit of a roll now, FTF number 3. I had the cache in hand and was resting over the bonnet of the zook when farmer muggle rolls up. She went to great lengths to tell me about the rangers and just how much trouble there would be if I ignored the "Keep Out" signs. Turns out that there use to be a very popular camping area and swimming hole near the dam just a bit further down the track. There are still a lot of people who remember how good it was down there and they jump the fence or cut the locks and just go in anyway. There is a hell of a lot of exploration work going on down there now in an effort to find more gold. Apparently the Bakers Shaft camping area was built to replace this popular destination. According to farmer muggle the old water hole was so deep that you could dive from up high and not hit bottom. She also said that 3 people had died down there before it was closed because they went in swimming when the river was in flood and simply got swept away. Anyway, the cache was an easy find SL TFTC
