Had a lovely walk up in the cool enjoying some magnificent yellow wattle sprays. Found the cache without too much difficulty and it is in good order. TFTC
Spent many holidays in the past and thought we should see giraween again, the walks didn't seem to be as hard when we were younger. Thought we should as least log one cache while there, sorry for the late log, fp for one our favourite places.
Morning walk out to Turtle Rock with a stop at Castle Rock, the sun was out for the first time this weekend. TFTC
GreenGecko1 and I decided Girraween National park was our next group of caches to grab that were over 1000m for a challenge. So day two, we had seven caches on the list today. We walked about 14km today. I am really glad that we made the trip to Girraween National Park it is a very beautiful Park with top camping grounds. We also had a few old caches on the list today, especially as I still need them for a challenge cache. We didnt take to long to find this cache. pirate63 thank you for placing and maintaining this cache for geocaching community enjoyment.
After our event & romp around Mt Norman we drove back to our camp ground, had a break & set off again to Castle Rock. Yet another easy walk to the peak to find this one after a short look. The cache is in good condition & a great view back towards Mt Norman . Of course we undertook a waypoint for an earthcache while also admiring the views.
Brrrr, that’s about as steep as I want to go finding any geocaches. Didn’t even have signal to know it was here till half way up! TFTC!
This National Park is amazing. Thank you so much for the cache. A definite favourite.
I thoroughly enjoyed the hike up here and what an amazing view! It was very windy but the sun was out and it didn't take too long to find the hidden treasure. FP from me! TFTC pirate63
This weekend, an overnighter at Girraween National Park was planned with the aim to tackle Mount Norman. An early start on Saturday had me attend Warwick parkrun and visit Warwick, Leslie Dam, Stanthorpe, and then Girraweeen to walk to Underground Creek. On Sunday, it was a walk/hike through Girraween's south vicinity visiting Mount Norman, Castle Rock, and Turtle Rock, before venturing across the NSW border, and then heading northwards via Ballandean and Stanthorpe, detouring past the *Elementary* series and *Stan's Apple* series.
Today, I joined Beardman75, Davinells, and wayn0, and we spent the morning with a hike in the southern vicinity of Girraween National Park. A tough expedition to Mount Norman's geocache, and after taking a breather with the group and then saying farewell, I continued north via Castle Rock, The Sphinx, and Turtle Rock, thanking the car shuffle for only making my journey a one-way walk. It was then a southern drive towards Tenterfield for a few geocaches, before proceeding back north targeting geocaches with high Favourite Points, in particular the cluster around Fletcher. It was then a detour towards the *Elementary* series, and lastly, I took a few more stops west of Stanthorpe finding a few more of *Stan's Apple* geoart, and completing the [Stanthorpe Art and History](https://labs.geocaching.com/goto/99df815e-d7c7-4bde-8575-b2c5ff71d8cc) Adventure Lab, before fatigue and daylight got the better of me, and I proceeded home.
We set out on this walk departing from the Mount Norman day-use area trailhead just after 07:25 hr, and I walked a total distance of 17.0 km across an elevation of 543 m, with a moving time of 4:10 hr. I arrived back at my car at the visitor centre trailhead at 14:00 hr, hence the total duration was 6:35 hr, as per my [Strava record](https://www.strava.com/activities/8539271729). A rather hot hike with undulating terrain, so I was happy to be back at my car. A terrific walk that I would highly recommend, but perhaps more enjoyable on a cooler day. It was also a chance to tick half of the [Giraween Granite](https://coord.info/GC3E0GW) EarthCache waypoints off.
I was keen in ticking off this oldie geocache at Castle Rock, and perhaps it was one that I had subconsciously seen many times on the oldies list as it was always alphabetically right a the top... aaarrgh! I enjoyed a few tight spots navigating through in between granite boulders, and as I made my way around the castle rock walls, I soon arrived at the keep's lookout. It was then a little bit further towards GZ (I was 15-20 m away as I was walking around, but it's definitely at the top). It only took a few minutes of searching before finding the cache in its nice nook, and from my GPS, the cache was 5-10 m away from its coordinates at S 28° 50.645' E 151° 56.688'. The cache container and logbook were in good shape. Thanks pirate63 for the cache placement and ongoing maintenance. It was nice to have found this oldie 08/2008 hidden cache, of which is one of Queensland's 1000 oldest yet active geocaches.

Hanging out with Davinells and Co. and it was decided to venture into the park. It was raining but not that heavy. It sure is beautiful around here. The rain adds to the beauty in a different way to a clear day. In my opinion, one isn't more beautiful than the other. Each type of day helps complete a picture and experience of the area. We decided to have a look at a couple of waypoints from a nearby Earthcache and head up to find this cache. Found in good condition. I have more to do in this National Park so will definitely be back. Thanks for the cache.

Had a few days off so took a last minute trip to Girraween. We met up with Wayn0 and set up camp, then set off in search of the sphinx and castle rock.
The heavens opened up as we made our way up but it didn’t deter us, it’s just water! We carefully made our way around the edge, it was only slightly unnerving not being able to see the edge due to the low cloud. Once up we only caught glimpses of the view so we mainly imagined the awesome scenery below us.
After answering the EC questions we made our way over to GZ and soon had the cache in hand. Will definitely have to return in better weather to truly appreciate the area…without the threat of slipping off the rock. Tftc pirate63

Well my fear of heights took over on the very last section but my partner went ahead and found & logged the geocache!! What a beautiful place
Our last day in the park so we were walking up to the castle, Spink and turtle rock.
The wind would have been whistling through the rigging if we were on a sailing ship. It also had a bit of a chill in it aswell. Once we admired the view we made a quick detour to the cache for a quick find.
Thanks for placing this cache

Peppa, Chamad, Willis007 and I headed out to collect a few waypoints for the earthcache. This was our first stop. After admiring the views and answering the earthcache questions, we headed over here for a quick find. This is such an amazing place. Thanks for the cache
PirateLinda and I have come down for Beardman75’s Catch-up in Stanthorpe event tonight… Apparently people come here in the middle of winter… for fun… Being our only full day in town, it’s all about Girraween…
A plan was hatched, Beardman75 was picking me up at 0 degrees, then we’d meet Willis007 and chamad at 0 degrees and hike into Castle Rock and The Sphinx at 1 degree… 8.25km for 302m elevation over 2 hours…
Later meeting PirateLinda, abeck58, Catboy67, Bella and a couple of young things at 9 degrees to hike Underground Creek…. 5.84km for 108m elevation over 1.5 hours
That’s quite a daunting climb… things we do for a Q1000 cache… it’s good to have friends though…
This is a beautiful area… having never been here before it was all brand new for me…

A rough plan to walk a couple of caches in Girraween was set. The meet time was at 8am and the plan was to walk to castle rock and do a few of the waypoints to an earth cache in the area.
This meant that Willis007 and I had to leave Brisbane at 4am to make the meet on time and on the coldest day of the year so far. It was 10 degrees when we left home, we knew this was going to change as we went along and got over the pass. As the drive went along, we watched the temperature gauge drop and drop, OH MY Goodness -4 at one point of the drive. However, that did not stop us, there are caches in them there hills.
As we drove along the highway and as the sun was coming up, it was very interesting to see the very heavy frost on the ground and on buildings, frost gees that’s ice. We made it to the meet up and some with very cold enthusiasm we started our walk. OH I think it was around 1 degree by now lol.
An awesome walk around and a great view from the top, I have not been here for these walks before, there is so much to enjoy, thank you.
The walk itself was good a nice up and down before a big up to the top but the view was spectacular and very different. We signed the log and then started our walk to the next way point.

A great day out in Girraween National Park with chamad, Peppa, and Beardman75. The main focus was to visit some of the waypoints for the earthcache in the area, and to attend the event in the evening.
Of course, there are always plenty of caches to visit while in the area, we made sure we made the most of the beautiful day.
A quick find at gz, thanks pirate63 for bringing us here.

I had been here previously, but don't remember that last bit getting to the top! Once their, ESCR made the find. TFTC!
I found this to be the scariest hike in the park! Just a little 10m section that had me very worried (I really don’t like heights). Nearly gave up and walked away, but glad I pushed on. The views up here are stunning.
Signed and returned. TFTC

I decided to make my way to this cache after attending the mates day event in the day use area. After a bit of searching I spotted this well hidden cache. Can't beat the views from up here, tftc pirate63
This afternoon we chose to take a walk up Mt Castle. It didn’t disappoint... fantastic views! Wow!
It was a great walk made even better by finding your cache.
Thanks heaps.

After a reconnaissance with the Ranger regard my event next week, I park the bike in the information car park then off I hiked.
Steady pace up, lots of stairs.
Got to the "arse" rock (you'll see it on the way), photo and ate a musli bar while hiking.
Met a few walkers on route here - busy track. Reached bottom and as granite acts like a satellite dish I took a phone call at the base plate the mountain.
Bit scary round edge but not too bad.
Scramble up to the top then found the cache after a short while.
Left a lanyard and Yowie.
Nice view from summit. Took a few pictures.
Also completed part of the Earth cache way point here.

WOW! What a view. This is a most spectacular spot at the end of a fairly easy hike.
Found whilst most of the East Coast of Australia was underwater (March 2021), we had such a beautiful day for a hike, a cache find, some family time, and some exercise.
Looked too low at first, but found a new angle to view this cache from and BOOM... easy find!
Thanks for making this hike extra special for us

After a long anticipated 4 day hike in NSW, that was originally planned for this week, had to be abandoned because of the border closures, Crookedpete, JezNDez and I rearranged the week to start with a hike along the Stretcher Track and end with an extended weekend hiking in Giraween.
Friday was mainly spent visiting a collection of unloved caches on the surrounds of Stanthorpe, with the actual hiking left for the weekend when Swellerfungus and LadySim could join us.
After checking out of our accommodation in Glen Aplin we headed off to Giraween for a walk The Sphinx and Turtle Rock and stopped in a Castle Rock on the way back. After scrambling our way to the top Crookedpete was the one who set down to business and soon had this cache discovered. TFTC

Queensland border closures put an end to a Bromance extended hiking adventure in Oxley Rivers National Park in NSW. Still needing a break, a Bromance plus weekend trip to Stanthorpe with Seffnjarah, JeznDez, Swellerfungus and Lady Sim was organised.
Friday was spent touring the region collecting unloved caches. On Saturday, we hiked to the Junction and then on to the Arch before climbing both Pyramids. Today, we ventured to the Sphinx and Turtle Rock, before climbing the Castle on our return.
From the junction, it seemed like there was only a few stairs, a tunnel and short contour around the granite slab to the top. A little chill from the wind, but that didn't stop us from scrambling over the summit to make the find.
Thanks pirate63

A long scramble along a crazy steep rock face did not go down well with one of us who has issues with heights... One slip and you'd be sliding down and not able to stop yourself... Eeek. The views however, are spectacular. Bring some warm clothes during this time of the year as it felt a few degrees colder than down below at the camp site
A really great bushwalk and we looked at GZ to see if we could find this geocache but no luck for us today. The views were spectacular.

Beautiful winter day. Lying in the sun at the top, I thought this would be a Greta spot for a cache. Opened the app and what do you know!! TFTC
This cache was in my sights today, so I decided to wake up early and head out to Girraween to lay claim to it. It was blowing a gale at home – “Surely it wont be windy all the way out there”, I thought.
I was wrong. It was worse. And only 5 degrees when I arrived – but Girraween is nice in any weather, so I left the car and started trekking south towards Castle Rock.
Took a detour through the campgrounds – it’s so eerie not seeing them being used. I found the trail at the far end of the campground and made a relatively easy walk, slowly gaining altitude though the recently burnt landscape. It was amazing to see the new shoots emerging from the blacken trunks of the scorched trees. Not all the trees made it though, there are plenty of fallen trees and some that just got too hot to regrow.
Nearing the top, I pushed myself through ‘Jenny Craig’s crack’ – that gap between the broken boulders that is wider than it looks. I spiralled my way up the top, some sections were quite exposed – but, it is more of a head shock, the risk of slipping and falling over the edge would be minimal.
Once on top I explored for a while – I found another rogaining marker, just like the one I found at the stone cottages a few weeks ago. I thought they pulled these down after the event. Started looking for GZ and found the stash in first place I looked. Great to find yet another good size container that is (almost) as old as the hills in this park. Once the formalities were done, I had another quick scout round then made my way back towards the car. I scaled the first pyramid after this rock, then made my way to Tenterfield for a bit of lunch.
Great cache, and a favourite point from me. Thanks me-hearties!

Really worth a walk and a favourite point. Thanks very much!
Wow that's the hardest T3.5 I have ever done. Really emotionally draining as I edged along the northern rock face. Not a long walk but the change in altitude and the steep side slopes were quite challenging. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache for us to find. SL TNLN
After climbing the Pyramid we returned to camp for lunch. We then set out for another walk and found ourselves at Castle Rock. We made the climb up the steps till the better half couldn't go any further. Vertigo is horrible. I left her sitting on a rock and away I went. Climbed through the crevice and the GPS was counting down. But I then realised it wasn't that easy. Across the face and up again. After a brief search I found the cache and toilet paper. I carefully extracted the cache and log was signed. The trip down was easier and plenty of photos taken. We will be back to spend more time in the area. TFTC
We left early from Castle rock camp to go to the Sphinx, Turtle rock and then up to the top of castle rock. It was a struggle after all the other walks we had done. But this was by far our favourite. Climbing thru rock tunnels and scrambling over granite boulders. Again one of the team opted to stay in safety taking in the views and bird watching while the other continued onto the summit. There was no one else at the summit. Great timing. The views were so amazing and the sky was so clear that all the major land formations of Girraween NP could be seen. After gathering info for the earth cache WP it was only a short distance to discover the cache. The logbook was signed and all replaced as found.
It was so beautiful and peaceful on castle rock, such an amazing place. Definitely a favourite point for the climb and the views. Thanks for the cache pirate63

This is one of several caches found with Dora the Explorer! on a road trip over the Australia Day long weekend.
We had just set up camp and went for a swim in the swimming hole and with about 2.5 to 3 hours of daylight left, Dora the Explorer! asked if I wanted to go for a little easy walk. I thought she had meant just a flat track of some kind so I headed off with her still wearing my swimming trunks and thongs and carrying just one bottle of water, I thought no problems.
Dora the Explorer! had been to the cache before and as she was wearing a skirt she did have hiking boots on so I should have twigged.
After about half way she pointed to castle rock and said we are going up there. I thought she was joking and I was thinking how am I going to do this in thongs.
As we got closer to the summit we were walking on granite and I was quite surprised that the thongs were working quite well and provided good grip. After going through some arches and heading higher and higher we made it to GZ. By this time the breeze was quite strong. It was cool and refreshing.
The log was signed and returned to the cache. We then made our way back. We were thankful for the white dots painted on the rocks to give some guidance.
All is good with this cache.

Staying the long weekend at Stanthorpe we had plans for some walks around Girraween...and decided on this one (as well as checking off a WP of the Earthcache). Unfortunately being so dry at the moment the area is relatively devoid of wildflowers. Thankfully we scored a cloudy day with a cool breeze making the walk very pleasant. The kids had a giggle at "Rock Bottom" with obligatory nose holding pics taken and it was on our way up. Now, 3 out of 4 of my guys "don't do" heights so this was going to be interesting...after squeezing through the second of the rock "tunnels", surprisingly it was the littlest, 8yr old Esky Boy (the one who does heights the best) who freaked out and came to a grinding stop laying prone on the rocks under an overhang. And so it was that I, Mrs Esky, went on alone. I scrambled up on top to be faced with a "hold-onto-your-hat" wind (actually I took it off) and first proceeded to gather the info required for the EC. Then a wander across the top to find myself a log book...a great hide...all good here. The view from the top is amazing...a great place to view all the iconic spots of Girraween. Fav point from me. Thanks pirate63.
We continued on to the Sphinx & Turtle Rock from here before heading back to the picnic ground for lunch. With the forecast predicting wet weather for the next couple of days, we then decided to visit Dr Roberts Waterhole & Underground Cr. An impressive effort from the littlest legs hiking just over 12km with no complaints...a great day had by all once on "safe" ground .

#1509 Greetings from England
We are in Australia visiting the olds and Girraween is one of their favourite places, so this time we have booked a couple of chalets to stay in for a few days. Today was our first full day and we decided that we liked the look of the walk to Castle Rock. The olds haven't been well though so turned back about half way up. The 4 of us soldiered on, and apart from a few nerve-wracking moments, we made it to the top Along the way, we thought we were passing the cache, as altitude is hard to determine on my map, so we spent some time searching fruitlessly before deciding to go to the summit. Once we were there, it occurred to us that the cache might actually be near the top, so we had a search and were delighted (and relieved) to soon find it. Everything was in good condition. The log was soon signed and the cache replaced. TFTC

Found with Dave! Awesome location. A little out from the exact co-ordinates, but great spot. Tftc!
I have been visiting the Granite Belt as often as I can since first coming here in 2013 with the QLD Mega Committee. I fell in love with the area and decided that I wanted to eventually find ALL the caches in Girraween. The issue is I am quite short and my little legs don't go very fast so it takes me a while longer than others to get around.
This weekend Kab and I had decided to have a weekend away from the world and get out to Girraween. I hadn't found this cache yet so we decided Castle Rock was a great Saturday Morning Activity.
The walk wasn't too difficult. I took a few moments to stretch out my sore legs as we walked and it took a bit of support to get up the little scramble at the end but eventually we got to GZ! Kab helped me find it and she had to grab it for me as I just couldn't QUITE get it comfortably. With my name in the logbook it was time to grab a few photos as we had a bite to eat and a chat before heading back to the campsite. Thanks for the cache pirate63.

I was on vacation at the girraween and I decided to look for a couple of geocaches on the way. Castle rock had great views and as I have experience in rock scrambling I think it was great to find a geocache in a place like this. I had to use the hint as the gps got messed up by the rocks. TFTC.
I used the afternoon to do some real exercise and run all the way from Castle Rock Campground to Castle Rock itself. At least, I run most of the time, only the final ascend was too steep for running, so I continued to walk quickly instead. I came along quite a lot of hikers, who were surprised to see me flying by. The view from atop of the mountain was gorgeous! I could hardly take my eyes off. Still, I had business to do, as questions for the Earthcache had to be answered and, of course, this cache wanted to be found as well. After hopping around a bit and taking many pictures, I managed to find this box. Nice hiding place, these 3.5 terrain stars were well earned, I would say. Thank you so much for hiding a cache here!

Aaarrgh! I do know the cache will be a good one when stamped with the pirate63 mark. I certainly was not disappointed
Wombles and Co, 1MinnieMoo and myself had found ourselves in this glorious part of the universe chasing the Girraween Earthcache. Happily we also managed to grab a few of the traditional caches along the way. After a bit of a huff and a puff all three of us emerged from between the granite crevice to be greeted with a lovely view. A few pictures taken and we continued on.
The next part of the climb certainly got the heart racing! Nothing that our fearless group couldn't manage though. Another small scramble and we were all standing on top of the castle. Woohoo!!! We took our time to catch our breath and then went off to hunt for the cache. It didn't take long until the beasty was in hand.
Thanks for the cache and view pirate63

Out here for Earthcache weekend with NyssaFlutterby and Wombles&Co, and of course as we were completing the nearby waypoint for the Earthcache we had to grab this one as well. The panics did almost set it at one stage for Wombles&Co and I during the climb, but Nyssa sailed through like a true pirate and convinced us to join her or walk the plank. Eventually we made it up top and couldn't let this cache go unfound by us. A quick grab and log signed before we made our way back to where we felt much more comfortable. That was quite a 3.5!!
Oh and I think it may have been here I ripped through the bottom of the pants I was wearing today
Thanks for the cache pirate63.
Well that was an experience! One very hard part which Minniemoo and I did the bum shuffle across and we were there! Nyssa made it look easy!
I didn't want to look at the view much once at the top, I'd looked at it too much on the way up!
Found for the second time.
We love this place.
Fantastic views worth every step to get up here.
Awesome

Found this one a couple of weeks ago with gourmetgazelle and the Muppet hunters and forgot to log it! Great walk to the top for an extraordinary view!
What a beautiful walk! I walked this one while geoman and his friend took on The Pyramid. Climbing the granite was a challenge while holding a large water bottle but the views at the summit made it absolutely worth it. T4TC!
So happy to finally get this one after a DNF three years ago. Loved the walk to the top with some great mates - including 7 kids under 9 between us! We were camping at the Balk Rock site. Love this place. A favourite from us!
TFTC spent the Easter long weekend camping at Girraween NP, hiking and geocaching, thanks!
A day at our favourite national park was always going to be good and it was with a great walk to a well placed cache. Thanks for putting it here pirate63.
#3811 [13:10] today we had beautilfull walk here. hot, but light breeze helped us to survive way to mt. norman and castle rock. thanks!

T-Tech, Brother Colin and I are camping at Girraween for a few days My goal is to see every sight, climb a few big hills, and collect every geocache.
Day 2, and it's going to be a big one This morning we took a walk out to the Pyramids, and this afternoon was the walk out to the Sphynx where we noted the info for the Earthcache, then up to the Castle for another Earthcache WP and of course this cache. Loved where it was hiding [^] TFTC, pirate63.

Out of Brisbane and down to Girraween NP for a few days of hard core caching (at least that's what my ankles were telling me after days of walking over steep lava flows )
Girraween NP is a fascinating place reminds me of a blend between the Flintstones and Australia
Day 2:
After climbing up the Pyramid1 and collecting info for the earth cache, and P2 we had a bit to eat and were ready for some more earth cache info collection at the Sphinx then aaarrgh PC
BC and IolantheK set a reasonable pace but my angles didn't like that and in the end I took some of BC's pain killers and trudged on
Once at the Castle we made an easy find
Now for the return trip

Back here again now I'm no longer a muggle. A warm day after a frosty camp last night
Another cache finished in Girraween. Love this park. Legs are certainly getting tired after 3 days off walking. TFTH
We live in a two-story home. When I borrowed my neighbor's long ladder with the bright idea of cleaning down the glass on the Solar Panels before Summer for better electricity generation, I had forgotten how much I hate heights. You can still see the teeth marks in our roof guttering! Well, not really, but it gives you an idea of how I am really uncomfortable with heights unprotected. So imagine what happened when I rounded the corner after passing through the 'wedge' at Castle Rock! Nooooo! GO BACK! I began to tremble at the thought of walking across the granite boulder with no protection. What if I slip? - it's Bye Bye RoddyC! No one would survive that fall! Man up, RoddyC! Others have done it. I began making excuses - No Mrs RoddyC, I have arthritic knees, I'm too old for this at nearly 70 - surely they don't expect me to do it at my age! It didn't help that the guy in front of me took a couple of steps and turned back because his foot slipped in a slightly damp section. Nor that Mrs RoddyC didn't come this far because she couldn't make the steep rock climb before "the Wedge" in the shoes she wore today! So I crawled. Nobody was watching - they all turned back. Needless to say, I made it. Now to hunt down that cache - well that took forever. The hint was "between a split in two big boulders." Really!!!!! Come on Mr CO - after nearly wetting myself in fear (red-faced expression here) in getting to this point, you expect me to hunt around up here on this surface with a gale of a wind blowing...... Guess so! Perverse creatures some COs are! Took some photos - now for the return trip...... See note 2
