Incredible place. If I’d found a wet logbook I’d have logged a smile but I didn’t

Hi, I found a decomposing log book only so marking it as a DNF and notified the owner.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Mr Smokey Bear will no longer be a part of Team Smokey Bear and will continue his adventures as "SmokeyBearOG".

So I'm relogging all previous finds under my new account.
Unfortunately this log will not show the original logging date.

**Thanks to HGcore for this adventure, looking forward to many more.**

Out with my bushwalking group doing this massive walk/in some cases clamoring. Some of us left as the rocks put them off but 8 of us ventured on. Got to the top and what views and caves up here. So glad I made the climb. Thanks for bringing me here HGCore

What an amazing place! We walked to the summit of Hollow Mountain and found a flat cave near the top which was pretty cool. Then descended to the big split rock and found the cache thanks to accurate coordinates. The view from GZ is just brilliant! So worth the walk to this one. The cache is just a bare logbook - no bag or container - but the cache was dry and in good condition for just being tucked in the rocks. Replaced it with a few small rocks on top to stop it being blown away. Good to see some familiar names of fellow South Aussie cachers in the log too.
Then walked back a bit and climbed up into the hollow rock - this was fascinating with some amazing rock patterns/caverns here! Fav point for this one!

Lovely spot, but really needs a proper cache as it's currently loose. Nice and dry though!!! TFTH

I think the best finding since I started this journey! Thanks for placing the cache in such a great spot!

Found it by accident during lunch. Sweeet spot

Finally came back here with a previous finder and McLookers. I am glad that I did as I wouldn't have gone there on my own. Finally found it after more than 12 years!

A walk to this spot really gets your blood pumping....then there is the crawl out to GZ. Oh dear! I was thankful to make it but unfortunately did not have a replacement cache container. Hopefully the log will be saved from the elements. Thanks HGCore....I think! I must say I was pleased to be back to firmer rock with no ledge to fall off. Found with Muzza and Alansee.

I drove up to Horsham to drop my Daughter at her friend's for a week and took the opportunity to do a little caching in Horsham before heading off to the Grampians for a walk up Mt Stapylton.
I stopped off here to drop a TB.
Love this cache and location.
The cache lid has fallen apart and the logbook was damp, I flipped the cache over to try and keep the contents dry.
Need a 1 litre sistema up here if anyone reads this before they visit.

Love finding these secret nooks throughout the Grampians. A massive big day out hiking and exploring this beautiful area. Adrenaline pumping as going through and dong some bouldering. The perfect way to shake myself out of the lockdown bubble and back into some adventure. Won't ever be taking the great outdoors for granted again. TFTC

Beautiful view, maybe the best place I've been in Australia so far.
Thanks

I love this mountain. I had a good look around the caves and surrounds but wasn't sure enough where I was heading to finish this one off today...I'll be back!

Today I walked around this area collecting the caches, a beautiful spot here apart from the long fall that could of been possible if one foot slipped. Cache was easily found and is all good

Out where?
That is a bloody long way down when you get to end of the 'tunnel!
Wasn't so bad, by keeping away from the edge I wasn't constantly reminded about how far down it is! lol
Found in only places that matched the hint, as GPSr still had me wanting to go out there!

Thanks for the adventure.

First of my finds in the Secrets series (which I of course now need to find all of).
If you know what you're looking for, you can actually see this cache from the summit!

Scary drop - wet and slippery rocks! Be careful in winter!

Mr Morris headed over to Grampians for a few days of walking with 16 year old muggle Hugh. The two of them enjoyed their walks over a couple of days.
Wowsers!! I'd been here previously and had forgotten just how magnificent this end of the Grampians is.
The plan was to start at Hollow Mountain follow the ridges to Mount Stapleton and return to the car. Ahh the best laid plans of human EPIRBs and Geocachers

After a miscalculation and too much jibber jabber we found ourselves 30 metres from the cache or should I say 30 metres below the cliff the cache was on. Bugger. Okay focus and start again. We followed the cliff back and got to the top of Hollow Mountain accompanied by 30 school students. Ahh the serenity.

With attention to the instructions the cache, unlike our nerves was soon in hand. What a great spot to take in and enjoy the breeze. Hugh the human EPIRB was loving the adventure making me the best second cousin ever.

Thanks for contributing to the fun HGCore

A great day for a walk up Hollow Mountain. On the way up we stopped near the wind tunnel and I pulled out the phone to see if there was a cache near here- there sure was and only 20m away. One of the kids climbed up and found it straight away. This is is one of my favourite spots in the Grampians, fun to explore around the caves. Thanks!

04-Dec-18
No luck! GPS couldn’t figure out where we were and couldn’t find a safe area to climb

DNF doesn't quite suffice for this one. Mrs Juc got to within 5m after a PAF confirmed that yep...it's out there... A step or two too far for those who aren't as agile as they used to be.

However, what an amazing place and in the end, we didn't really mind too much about the smiley. After we decided against that last scramble, we spent a good couple of hours just exploring the top of the mountain, inside and out. The windblown cave inside that big rock is just incredible.

The perfect weather meant the mountain and nearby outcrops were alive with people climbing up and down on ropes, hanging upside down from outcrops and cave roofs and carrying their mats up and down. We sort of felt old and unfit, but then we looked at the view back down to the car park and decided we'd done OK.

Thanks for the hunt HGCore and although it's a DNF, we loved it !

Having looked at this area for ages as a gonnado hike , we finally had some time free to wander over to the West and play up in these hills , the weather was perfect for hiking sun was out , crazy location for a cache not something I’d do in the rain that’s for sure but the views are the best
THANX FOR THE ADVENTURE ️

Was exploring the beautiful nearby caves with a few friends when we decided to head down the side of the gorge to appreciate the views over the western Grampians. On the way we noticed a suspicious pile of rocks and lo and behold there was a cache! Accidental caches are always the best, especially in such an amazing location. TFTC

GeoD and I were having a big fun day out up this end of the park, and after a bit of chimney climbing fun back at the last one, we made our way up here for a bit of a look.
With the pointing boxes pointing "out there", I decided to scuttle out first for a bit of a look, and I tell you what, you wouldn't want to be afraid of heights coming out here, no siree....anyway, I found the container, and we sat our there on the ledge taking photos and admiring the view while we scribbled our names in the log book.

This is what caching is all about.....

Words really don't describe the journey here and the views to be found. All I can say is if you have the opportunity to do this trek and this cache; jump at it.!

Day 4 of our 8 nights in the Grampians. Today was the first day the Mrs ventured out exploring with me so we headed for the Mt Stapylton area of the park.
A fun filled day of bushwalking and rock scrambling/ climbing.

We started the day with this cache. Parked at the Hollow Mountain parking area we headed straight up the sandstone.
We arrived at the top of Hollow Mt before realizing the cache wasn't up there! We the cache actually is I had gone to check out on the way up as well, just because it looked cool in there. Clearly I wasn't looking at my gps at all!
After a good look around at the views up to we headed back down and around to the cache. The rocks were still a bit damp from the overnight rain so it was a cautious effort to go looking for the cache, but I spotted the suspicious pile of rocks fairly quickly and logging duties were performed shortly after.

TFTC! The wind was quite strong through the tunnel today!!

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to come up this way and try and chase a new first to find on the on the loop from Hollow Mountain carpark around Mount Stapylton down to Mt Zero carpark then along the road back to Mt Hollow carpark. So I gave Ausfox; and Neville_devil a call and they were both happy to join in on my lunacy.
On the way to this cache I really thought our day was going to come to an abrupt holt as I had a dizzle spell and felt terrible for a short time. After a little break and some water I started to come good again fortunately. It would have been very disappointing to drive 3 hour to get here and have to head back again so early.
Once we finally made it to the wind tunnel after me slowing everyone down for a while we were on the hunt. We were originally on the right track only turning around on meters from the cache Sad. After Ausfox; used a PAF we quickly made the extra few meters to find the cache waiting for our names to be enetered into the log book.
Thank you HGcore for the cache

Came up for the day with The Simsfamily and Neviile Devil to grab a few caches and explore but it soon turned into a day that took me out of my comfort zone walking around the circuit from Hollow Mountain carpark around Mount Stapylton down to Mt Zero carpark then along the road back to Mt Hollow carpark Which was full of rock hopping, crawling, sliding, climbing which was all worth it for spectacular views and experience with great company.

We spent a little time here hunting high and low trying to get as close as possible to GZ which after trial and error, we even got within a couple of metres at one stage but with help from a PAF we were able to eventually find the cache. Log signed and replaced as found.

Thanks for the cache HGCore

I got a call from Jack83 asking what am I doing on Good Friday, my reply was family stuff, what about you Jacko, his reply was going on an awesome adventure, I soon forgot about those family plans and joined him.
What a fantastic adventure it was getting to this cache, I'm always up for a rock scramble and this one sure ticked that box and what a view we had here, we enjoyed climbing all over the rocks here, but I had one massive advantage having a previous finder along with me.
Thanks HGcore for the awesome location and cache.

She said the previous find logged in the log book had also been an unexpected find....

Fourth cache of the weekend after heading up and over Mt Stayplton to Hollow Mountain.
What an adventure that turned out to be!! The cache location was no way near as scary as the day we had just had so we mannaged to find it fairly easily after 30 minutes or so of hunting around.

This one was fascinating as its location/orientation kept changing as we traversed the Hollow Mountain path. After finding the fine equilibrium between rock scrambling and the 'if you're about to break your neck you're in the wrong place' warnings we found it. We picked a nice day and it wasn't as windy as famed but it was a spectacular sublime view Smile

Wow, what a cool cache! Found this one on the way back from Hollow Mountain, on the way to Stapylton. Loved the adventure and it certainly had an element of danger towards the end! Took a pathtag and left a trackable and set of Disney Movie Stars cards. Thanks for bringing us here, off to try the Forgotten track next! Smile

Finally found this today after several unsuccessful attempts. Just had to go a little further than before. Though it starts to get a bit exposed. Not for the faint hearted!
Found along with Duntulum on day out with fellow Bushwalkers. Quite a hot day!
Glad to finally log this found!

Cool Found with Wallabytails , certainly not easy access and not for the faint hearted, geowife would never attempt this, Wallaby ahead of me and looked ahead and spotted its local at head high, picked up tb, Scoping this walk and Mt. What an amazing place to visit :c) a definite favourite!! Heading over to Melbourne for xmas, we had chosen a few geocaches to check out along our way... this was one of them, and so glad we came here. Not an easy trek up, but we were rewarded with spectacular views and an amazing spot to explore ;c) Dropped off a TB and left a little token for the next adventurous geo-explorer ;c) TFTC HGCore!!

Day 2 of our ‘Grampians not Glampians’ weekend.

The Frantic Four of Freddo, Malco!, Brad&Janet and I set about to conquer the North West, with no less than 3 summit assaults planned. This was cache 3 from 6.

This was my personal favourite of the caches in this region. Especially when you walk through the wind tunnel and you come out at the other end, the views are to die for. Die you could as well if you take a wrong step here. We did take a couple of wrong steps in a geographical way in search of the right elevation, but once we re-read the instructions it was quite a safe clamber to the final location.
Nice spot for the obligatory 'feet shot'.

The plan was to do a round trip over the summit of Mt Stapylton, but we weren't sure how to get there. There were no red arrows to be found and so we followed the yellow arrows all the way to the summit of Mt Hollow. The views were once again superb, but it also became crystal clear there was no way from here to My Stapylton.
So back we went in search of red arrows. There had to be a path across the ridge!

A few discussions followed. Do we need to go through the wind tunnel again? Is our path through the cave and rocks are now blocking it? Or is is through the narrow passage next to the cave (which in hindsight was probably the right solution) or do we need to go down a bit and then around?
We opted for the last suggestion but with nothing but sheer cliffs between us and the summit we quickly realised this attempt would be frugal. So instead we decided to abandon the northern approach and to return to the Mt Zero carpark and attack the Mt Stapylton summit from the other end. A 6km round trip all of a sudden became a 13km hike

Thanks for taking us to this great cache location HGcore!

Camping in the Grampians with Brad&Janet, *Cache or Check* & Freddo.

Our first Grampian Secret.

We arrived here in the morning after conquering Mount Zero and visiting Summer Daze. We climbed up to the base of the imposing cliffs and took a left turn into the Windy Hollow. CoC was working his way along the ledge on the left, while Freddo was taking elevation readings. Too low was the verdict and I found a way to get up higher. After looking in some promising cavities, I heard below that a re-reading of the instructions meant that we had been at the right level all along, and I climbed back down to the level we came in at. After CoC extended his searching a little further , he found the prize. Well done that man!

Fantastic spot to visit with impressive views in all directions.

Thanks for the cache, HGcore.

We continued up and around Mt Hollow with the expectation of continuing to Mt Stapylton and GS4 but hit a snag. Much discussion ensued resulting in a lot of backtracking and innovative directions. Eventually we decided to tackle it from the other end. Back at the carpark we saw that our intended path no longer officially existed.

I recently set myself a goal of making The Melbourne Event 2015 my 100th event and in order to do this, I have to attend almost every nearby event. After setting up my tent at the campsite and chatting to Janet from Brad and Janet, I headed out for some Grampians caching. I had a wonderful afternoon exploring the Mount Zero area. Jacko83 recommended this series of caches to me and they certainly did not dissapoint. SIMPLY SPECTACULAR!! A facourite point from me for the last 30 metres Smile

Thanks to HGCore for the cache. TNLN

Found on our big weekend caching trip involving the Little a Desert, the Arapiles, and the Grampians with Freddo, Malco!, and *Cache_or_Check*
Day 2
The first hike for the day involved three peak ascents, Mt Zero, Mt Hollow, and Mt Staplyton and 6 caches out of 6 attempts.
This was the second cache off the second climb. This was always going to be challenging. Not found for long enough to qualify as unloved.
We arrived at the approximate GZ but what level. The cache notes were read out including the phrase "go either up or down". This caused some confusion until a recheck revealed the correct words were "go neither up nor down".
A return to an earlier location and a move a bit further on and the cache was in hand.
There are T5 issues here (using the T5 definition that falling will kill you) but there are now 4 more names in the log now.

@12:21 pm Cache # 1202

[green] So when you say wind tunnel yon mean wind tunnel[/green]

Back in the Grampians for the long weekend, my main priority was Grampians Secrets 3 & 4, these two caches had been on my most wanted list for far to long and if there was to be any cache finding it was these two caches.

After finding No 3 in thick cloud cover I tentatively headed towards this cache hoping I wasn’t walking in the direction of a dead end. At some point I started following small rock Cairns that seem to lead me around a few obstacles but finished abruptly less than 100m before the cache. Problem was I appeared to be well above the cache with no obvious way down. Some time was spent trying different ways, some more difficult than others eventually I found a route down and later discovered I wasn’t far at all form the cache but at the time the GPSr was all over the place. Soon after finding away down I discovered the caves and for the next hour I spent searching every nook and cranny for the cache. Still not sure why but I had some preconceived notation that this is where the cache was hidden

With frustration starting to kick in, it was time for a break so headed up to the summit were in a short time I could see where the GPSr was pointing, back down I go and had the cache in no time. After the route I took from the other cache the last final few metres were a piece of cake

Great cache in fantastic area, which I so pleased to add my name

[green]Merci beaucoup

Cheers Big Grin

Down Stawell for the week with family and have some leave passes for the week to go caching in the Grampians. Had my eye on GSecrets or a while now so it was off to this first one.

Quiet hot today but with a double layer of suncreen, water and a hat I was all good.

Spent about 2 hours here in total - maybe 40 minutes trying to find GZ. Gps had me following a path where there was no path. Closest I got to at one spot was 15m. Crawled out one time, saw the path going in places to hairy for me, went back again, crawled around inside caves and tunnels, trying to decipher the hint. Again I found myself back at the same spot which had me closest. Read some logs and decided to brave it and crawl out, clinging to rocks and sweating beads. Got to a place I could stand - had a look and decided it must be up there - started climbing - put my hand on a spot and looked down where I was gripping - the cache!!! yewwww!

Signed the new log and crawled back to safety. Amazing windcaves here that I'm really glad I got to see. One of the scariest experiences I have ever had caching. Look forward to the others! TFTC HGcore! Fave point.

The cache has actually been checked, and found to be there, and all ok... So re-enabling. The area has been subject to bush fires and large parts have been closed. There is a chance that the area with the cache is still closed to the public.

So, the cache is re-enabled, but be aware that it may not be accessible until the area is reopened.

04-Jun-14
Confirmed cache is missing. Disabling until it can be replaced.

Thank you so much for introducing me to this area, it was stunning and I had a great time taking all sorts of photos - I didn't find the cache and looked and looked but I couldn't find anything at all. Think it might have done a bunk. TFTC HGore, hopefully I'll find it next time!

05-Apr-13
Tried to find this one , but there were so many muggles crawling around and we couldn't wait for them to move on. Actually there was also a family (at least Dad and two kids) camped in a cave above the GZ!! So we will have to find this one on a future to the Grampians.

09-Mar-13
Struggled to follow any discernible way from the Forgotten Track down to this one. Eventually we got to within about 30m, and we did find a rather dangerous, but doable way down to the track. It was a rather hot day, and we had all run out of water by this stage (4L wasn't enough), and the rest of my party were very keen to get down to the car park to find some shade and fill up. I was bloody minded and had a short look for the cache, but after such a long struggle to get down I mustn't have looked hard enough to see it. Damn, by the looks of the photos I was in the right place.
Great place, wish I'd had more energy to explore it, and find the thing

Out and about with the group for the weekend, we only took in 3 caches today but they were each amazing though in their own ways.. This and the next were the demanding / challenging 2 for the day.. especially the trip between the two.. Jim and I teamed up and tackled the challenge of fidning a path up and over.. however before we could do that we had to first find this one.. All the signs were pointing this way, and whilst the others were distracted I went out on a limb and pushed on towards this one.. Awesome spot, awesome view, and awesome company.. Thanks guys, and thanks HGCore..

The weekend turned up about 40 caches for me, including the last required DT combo for my Project 81.. Thanks to the various owners along the way, and appologies for the generic copy and paste logging.. We mixed it up with quite a few multis and some really fun bushwalks into the Grampians to take in the stunning views.. Weather for the weekend was awesome. Cheers to the cache owners for the caches.. Find #2968 TFTC. Dipped various TB's and GC's to mark the occasion.

This cache had been on the radar of drjim7 and myself for a while and we even came up one night in June thinking we might try to find it. We soon realised the error of our ways and resolved to come back during the daay. Today was the day and it was a glorious early spring Wimmera day. Set out from the car park and soon found myself in a very windy spot and I realised we weren't too far from the cache. Had a bit of an unneccessary but fun crawl through the cave then realised where we were heading. Spladem was the boldest and found the cache with the rest of us gingerly clinging to the walls and making our way over to the cache. Sat there for a while enjoying the ambience and liberated the 15 month old lollies. This a great cache and anyone whoc is a bit bold should give it a go. TFTC.

Exhilarating walk with some exposure especially at the end. Spladem actually made the find and chucked out the fossilised lollies left by a muggle. Next in series directly is on the agenda.

During a walk up to the hollow mountain I searched for the cache, but could not find it. At the end of a deep gap, what I consider to be the wind tunnel, is a perfect hiding place at eye level, but no cache in there. Maybe I looked at the wrong place...

Well i found it by folowing the excellent instructions. A bit hair raising towards the end but worth it. Thanks!

When we arrived here we had no idea about geocaching so we had no idea we were even looking for anything when we discovered this amazing 8 level cave. My son walking into the entrance near the Red<>Yellow arrows knelt down and decided to lead us through the 50cm high tunnels to the main cave body where we ventured to climb all the way through 8 levels right up onto the roof of the mountain.
It wasn't until the next day that we discovered Grampians Secrets 4, that we realized there was one back in the wind tunnel caves. After rock climbing to the top of Staplyton and back to GS4, we returned to the wind tunnel and searched the levels before eventually returning to the car,
My son has been rock climbing at the Grampians for 1 year now and loves it, but knowing that he's doing it to find "treasure" has really heightened his excitement now.
After reading this geocache log I realize that we never searched in that bottom, first cave for the geocache when we returned. We expected it to be high up in the cavern somewhere. No worries though, we'll be back for the rest of the geocaches one day, maybe next year, with some more friends. Love the idea and the experience.
Huge thanks to HGCore!!! ROCK ON!!

I first spent half a day looking for a way to get at this cache back last year when the co-ordinates decided that it was about 10 meters out from the cliff face. When I got home, I found that I was working from an old printout and they had since been revised. Bugger!!! Now, quite some time later, I made the effort to get back and finish the job. No problems this time. I really wanted to do the complete series on this visit but the weather intervened and I missed out on #5. It's still waiting and I'll be back when conditions are more suitable. Many thanks HGCore. I really enjoyed pushing myself just that little bit further to collect this one. First one for the trip and it got the heart started and whetted the appetite for the next few.

Great views and very enjoyable walk up.
The GPS was of little us in the tunnel and we were baffled for while, as to where the cache was.
Seems others have found it without a GPS too as there are a lot of muggle finds in the log.
The wind cave just above the tunnel is equally amazing and I now have an appetite to find more 'secrets' caches.
Much thanks to HGCore for this memorable cache

Many years ago I had walked between Stapylton and Hollow mountain without trouble but the passing years played tricks on my memory and what I took at a distance to be Hollow Mtn, was in fact not and I consigned Rob and I to a long unnecessary bushbash. Rob kindly did not lose his temper but we earned every one of the terrain points down in the scrub and by the time we reached the rock again and the scramble up to the cache it seemed tame in comparison.
The wind was howling through the tunnel and it felt just a little dangerous making my way out to the cache, sitting tantalisingly close on its perch.
Glad to return safely again so that we could continue to enjoy the wonderfully carved sandstone features of this remarkable peak.

Two caches successfully found on this loop, and Feathertop confidently pointed out a distant peak, and we planned out our route. Probably should have looked at the GPS's! Smile
A fair bit of time, and a lot of scratches later, we finally hit the Hollow Mountain track.
From there it was a lot easier.
Had a play through the cave to the wind tunnel, which was certainly living up to its name today. We had no trouble walking up the tunnel.
Again Feathertop made the find, while I marveled at the route we had taken a short while ago.
We took the required photos and headed down to Daze, and the walk back to Mt Zero carpark.
Thanks for the walk, Robmc.

Oooo, a nasty little bugger, great fun though!
I did wonder if it might be in here, a favorite picnic spot in days gone by.It's amazing how many muggles have found it here, all have done the right thing and you may have introduced a few people to the persuit.
Didn't need the hint but did need the elevation.
Thanks again HG for the cache, and for this series of caches only trouble is, I've run out, more please!!

With the adrenaline subsiding from our last visit to this area, we decided to revive the levels by bringing our families up to Hollow Mountain wind tunnels. We convinced the full teams of Razz'l'Dazz'n'Co. and Dragonfreys to make an afternoon climb up the mountain. We made steady progress up to the steep ramp and carefully ferried kids around exposed cliff edges until we were up into the caves. Left the kids and less adventurous adults in the caves while the two slightly more adventurous large kids went out on a limb, well.. cliff edge to retrieve the cache. The description was required given that GPS reception was quite poor to unavailable near GZ. Access wasn't too bad although a bit exposed save for the last 3 m which was extremely exposed. Of course upon spotting and retrieving the cache we realized we didn't have anything to sign the log with so luckily Dazz volunteered to return to the rest of the crew to find a pen and I sat patiently looking out into the void admiring the view from GZ.

Having read the previous logs I can see the concern about safety, but here the risks are obvious and expected. While we would carefully take our kids to the wind caves we would never consider letting them anywhere near GZ without a rope on. Log signed, we returned to guide our crew back down the mountain and to the end of another great adventure. Thanks for the fun. This has to be our favourite area in the Grampians.

Well we climbed right by this one several weeks ago before we read the clue and decided we weren't going down again on our way to Grampians Secrets 4. We returned today with wives and families (5 kids between 5 & Cool to explore the 'wind tunnel'. We left the families to the cave while Sean scampered off to find the cache - I came hesitantly behind like a dog who won't lead - Sean found the prize only to find no pen or pencil!! Off I went back to collect one while leaving Sean perched like a eagle on the edge of nothing. Cache now has a resident pen. Like its brother we found several weeks ago, this one would not have been retrieved if it was reliant on me to make the final grab, I don't like the 'edge of nothing' how be it, the view was fantastic. After successfully finding Grampians Secrets 4, the assault team split into two parties. Those who (wisely) decided to return by the designated path and those who decided to attempt to follow the "lost" path to Hollow Mountain. We were part of the latter. Parts of the path were still visible as were the occasional rock cairns marking the path. Only 400m to travel and the first 300m were great going for those used to rock hopping, then after 30 minutes we found ourselves within 27m of the GZ, the only trouble was there was a lot of fresh air between us and the next ridge where the GZ was located. P-pprass headed off up a gully then down a rock ridge line to scout a route and after a while was very close to the GZ. So .......... disclosing the route to us became second priority to discovering the cache! Not to worry, after having a bite to eat the rest of the crew hunted around and eventually worked their way onto the next ridge then rock scrambled down the ridge line to a vertical rock face, at one stage seeking the help/advice of the teams that had gone the “long way†and were now approaching the GZ. Not sure what was on the other side of the rock face, we awaited the return of our guide who had by this time discovered the cache. First priority now achieved, p-ppras returned and guided the rest of us to the cache site.

Certainly not a cache for the faint hearted, not at least the way we tackled the approach, but for those comfortable with working on rock faces, a great trip.

Found at 2.40pm GAFF4. Our 3rd cache of the Secrets series on “The Grampians Secrets group expedition weekendâ€. We were with a great group – Acts2youthgroup, Ian & Penny, maccamob and Phetlern.
After finding No. 4, pprass scouted the route north to see if there was a way to No. 3 and after travelling 250 metres found that it was easy with just another 230 metres to go!
So back to the group and with some discussion it was clear that some didn’t want to do it and decided to go all the way back to the Stapylton car park and approach No. 3 from the Hollow Mt. car park. The rest of us (Ian, Phetlern and pprass) pushed on and after just 30 minutes found ourselves 27 metres from GZ – but with a huge crevice between us and GZ! P-pprass went on to find a way through and left the rest of the group behind and after some climbing, managed to find the way through. However at GZ it was really tricky to locate the cache even with the help of the photos. At that time Acts2 turned up and a bit later on maccamob and with their assistance from a distance and with a lot of assistance by phone to muzza and Alansee the cache was finally found – took about 1 hour to find it and once again muggles had also found it. In the meantime Ian, Phetlern and C-pprass had worked their way to a sheer rock wall just a few metres from GZ and it was just an easy matter of going back to them and hauling them up and then down to where Acts 2 and maccamob were waiting. Explored the hollow mountain bit, but not well enough as apparently there was a way through the hole to get to GZ which was a lot easier than the approach that we took. This cache was a bit tricky to do from No. 4, but the views were spectacular and worth every step of the way – in fact I would do it again now knowing what to fully expect. Thanks to Ian, Peter, Helen and Cat for such wonderful support and thanks to HGCore for the adventure.
Ps – although the cache when approached in the correct way is not overly difficult, it can become very dangerous due to bad GPS lock and therefore having to search areas that you do not need to.

Found by Mary & David at 1445, in company with pprass, Phetlern, Ian & Penny, and Acts2YG. Having decided not to attempt the cross-country loop, David, Acts2YG and Penny returned to the Mt Stapylton car park while pprass, Phetlern and Ian headed for Hollow Mountain by the more difficult direct route. We phoned pprass on the way down to learn that he had reached a point about 30m from GZ but couldn't get there from that point. We phoned again from the Hollow Mountain car park. This time the distance to GZ was about 80m, but still no way to get there. David and Acts2YG headed up the track to the summit, leaving Penny with the vehicle in the shade (very smart indeed). As we neared GZ, we could see the rest of our group on the top of the mountain with no obvious way down to our level. Closer to GZ, we found that pprass had made his way to a spot on the steep rock face just above where the cache later proved to be. Then followed many anxious (for David and Eric) minutes while pprass slowly and carefully eliminated the various possibilities, before finally locating the cache in a much lower location than he had first been looking. A few more anxious minutes followed while pprass led the rest of the group down the steep slope to where we waited with bated breath. With considerable relief, we all made our way back to the car park. The tales of the explorers' escapades simply confirmed for David and Eric that they had made what was, for them, the right choice. We would agree with Acts2YG that, of the three "Grampians Secrets" so far, this had seemed the most precarious owing to the uncertainty of where to look on the rock face, followed by #4 then #5. Our thanks once more to HGCore for another challenge, and to the rest of the team, not only for making it so enjoyable, but for making it possible. David would certainly not have attempted this on his own.

This was the fourth cache of 5 for the day. This was a group effort, we had teamed up with pprass, Ian & Penny, maccamob and Phetlern to take on the Grampians Secret caches. The story continues as stated in our log for #4 we had split up the others going cross country and maccamob and acts2 headed around the safe way to walk up the track, the track had a few tricky parts that tested us out but we made it up to the top eventually. On our way up we had spoked to pprass on the phone and he had told us he was 27m from the cache but could not get there as yet, as we made our way up we could see some people up the top as we got closer they finally called out to us "can we get down from here" it did not look safe to me so I said no, it took them nearly an hour and a half to get down of the top of that rock while we sat and waited, once again pprass went out to retrieve the cache I could not watch as I did see his foot slip at one stage. The following part of this log is my opinion only and others may not agree.

I enjoyed my visit to hollow mountain but thought this cache was placed in a location that puts others life's at risk when there were plenty of spots that it could have been placed in that still brought you to this great location with out the risk factor, I believe that to do this cache safely ropes and safety harness would be best used here. having said that I know it is up to the individual to decide. I think the terrain rating should be lifted to 5.

My thanks to HGCore for the cache, I enjoyed meeting you guys.

2nd find of the day and 1743rd total find

We're doing a 'Grampians Secrets' cache raid with pprass, maccamob, Acts2 pheltern & this cache was our third in the series. Pprass pheltern & Ian made our approach, over the top from 'the forgotton track'. A note to future seekers, this route is possible, but it's not for the feint hearted. Please make sure that you are VERY prepared as this route is not easy and involves good rock scrambling skills in many places.

We made good time via this route, but the last 80 metres or so took the longest time. In fact the other half of our group returned from the forgotton track, and climbed up from the Hollow Mountain picnic area to get to GZ before most of our party.

Took: Nothing
Left: Nothing
Thanks HGCore for the cache.

After failing on my last attempt, the owner kindly sent me a photo of the location of the cache. It seemed that last time I was too low and then went too far out.

I decided that unless I went today, I wouldn't have the opportunity to get out there for a while, so I made a special trip up last night for a second attempt today. The weather forecast indicated possible morning showers, and I didn't like the thought of being out there on wet rocks. But I awoke to find blue skies.

Armed with the photo, I headed back to GZ, but this time I went high - too high, and again into some precarious and scary situations. It was only when I looked over the edge that I saw where I was supposed to be. Last time I came so close.

Once spotted, it was an easy retrieval with no scary situations involved. I will claim the FTF - muggle finders don't count do they? Smile Well that wraps up the series - all 5 found. And what a great series it was. Thanks to HGCore for this and all the caches, plus the help required to go back and find this one.

I enoyed the walk to the top, then checked the GPS to find I needed to go over the edge. (I should have read the cache notes first). Once near the right spot, I started looking for the cache without success - the GPS lost signal whenever I was within 40 metres.

I checked the clue, and tried to obey it, but I couldn't go far enough and part of it made no sense. I did my best, and worked my way along a ledge much further than needed, into situations where I was feeling uncomfortable. At the end, the GPS (with poor signals) was saying I'd gone 70 metres too far, but still no cache.

I looked in every crack and possible location, but I think I must have not quite been in the right spot. Oh well, it was a great walk and there were some fantastic views all around. I love these sorts of caches, even when I don't end up finding them. Thanks to HGCore for bringing me here.

I was going to continue to #4 but rain was imminent and I didn't fancy a walk on wet rocks, so it may have to wait until another day.

Visited the cache today and spent a whole hour trying to get accurate coordinates - not easy with cliffs everywhere. Hopefully these will be much better!

Congratulations to P. Smyth, who was the first to find, albeit accidentally. Smile

Correcting coordinates. The GPS reception was really poor in this area and they seem to be way off. Our sincere apologies to wally3450 and Alansee and thanks for pointing out the problem.

Having been here several times I had an idea where this was. My gps on approach was confirming same until this one too went haywire. The gps was putting me about 30 metres into the void. Over the next half hour I checked it from the top of both Hollow Mountain and Mount Hollow, with 10 satellites, and they agreed that I either should fly or take a 4-5 km round trek into the void below.

The information provided indicated that it was rather closer and I spent some time trying to make sense of it all and checking lots of spots. And with the info being rather vague, there were LOTS of spots!

Unless the coordinates can be improved, and/or a more specific hint provided, this one is going to be very hard to find.

Pity, as there are lots of great spots for caches in these mountains and its great to see some more being put out.

Plenty of wind about and the whole place is an interesting clamber. Coords seem to take me beyond where I dared; maybe I had the wrong approach. TFTH.
