Decided to do the track for ANZAC day. Had a feeling this wasn't removed so decided to head do down to check out the situation. Cache still in the same location With the tree rotting even further.
Placed the toys in the Takehe reserve cache on way out.
All taken care of for you now.

Such a beautiful sunny Anzac Day why not make the most of it and go for a hike, with some geocaches along the way of course! Doing the Taheke loop track with Riser5 he had a feeling this cache might still be there so we went on a mission to retrieve it. What a fantastic spot such a pity that the danger to the Kauri is stopping people from enjoying this. Was surprised with how well this cache has held up to the elements over the years, still with the original log. A pleasure to be the last to find nearly a year to the day since it was archived. Tftc
A fair old hike to get here, but I love these walks in our lovely NZ native bush. Such a pity that DOC have unofficially closed this extension track off the loop. Although there are few markers remaining, the track is still easy to follow. There are some lovely trees along here and it wouldn't really take that much work to put down the mats and bark etc to protect the few kauri that the track actually passes close to.
Once at GZ, the dead tree was readily identified and the cache soon in hand. Quite a few aussie critters inside - I hope they aren't trying to take over NZ...!!

I decided to venture out to Taheke Scenic Reserve this morning, a place I haven't been to for quite a number of years. While taking the loop track, I ventured off the loop and followed the old track to the Kauri Grove. Whilst the trail to GZ is no longer marked, it is easy enough to follow and after a lovely walk through the bush I soon found myself at GZ. The cache itself took a bit of searching as the sign and tree referred to in the hint are no longer there - well the tree is there, but it's now dead. A nice area, TFTC!
Took a wee while to get here. Almost gave up then checked one last tree and found. Kauri tree is now dead. Might I suggest next cacher marks out track with something bit of a goat's track now. Thanks for the cache.
Having done a bit more research about the side trail to the Kauri Grove, it has been closed due to Kauri dieback and perhaps this cache should be moved closer to the open trail or disbanded.
If your heading out look for the double post holes of the former sign and ignore "left is right". Found early Anzac morning with family and MIL. Shout out to Grobyc from a former coworker (zeb-Canada) . TFTC.

Post holes helped us home in on this seldom visited site. Track still easily navigable. TFTC.
Found this cache for the second time - this time while on a hike with the Whangarei Young Mariners and Shackleton Cubs.
The Kauri Grove is getting quite "overgrown" as the secondary natives reach for the sky. I see that DoC has removed reference to the Kauri Grove track from their signs and website - presumably to discourage hikers from visiting due to the Kauri root disease. TFTC

Lovely walk in, thanks. Eventually found it between a punga and a dead tree that I doubt was a kauri!
Had to do this geocache because I could see the Kauri covered pinnacle hill in the distance from the Mackerel Forestry track. I have been here before so knew where I was going.
I noticed the managers of the track have edited the Kauri Groove track off the Track Map Sign at the car park, so check it out and the new green paint marks where the Kauri Groove track leaves the Loop track!
Good hidey spot for the cache with lots of litter from the dead kauri around. Nice & dry inside the container.Took nothing and left a little kiwi.

Out for another wee spin in the Geonut with Hokiangler. An awesome bush walk and found no worries at all. Did go clockwise around loop track enjoying this wonderful bush and views while listening to the rushing water from the falls nearby. Really is a must do for all catchers . Sad to see last visit was way back on the 22/10/2010. Most enjoyable ,plus used up those 10,000 steps as took us about 2 and a half hours. Well worth the effort. Fav point form us:)
Awesome walk through the Kauri's and surrounding bush, sad to see sign at end of track.Found cache no worries.TFTC.
After last nights boozy-bus trip to the AllBlacks game (woohoo! pasted the boks) a refreshing jaunt in beautiful bush was definitely on order. WHY have we put these caches off so long?... well, the dog is always with me and the carpark hasn't much shade, but today it was late and a definite winter chill in the air so after his walk (elsewhere) he had a nice nap in the car.
Forewarned by Riser5's mishap, made sure to stick to the main, well marked track loop track.
Went clockwise & did the full loop; what a great track! Looks like they have done quite a bit of work recently, building it up & chipping it to help protect the kauri roots. Really enjoyed the scenery
Ran right past the turnoff (looks as if some markers there have been removed) while looking for the other cache but saw there was still just enough time & light so backtracked to find this one.
The cache was a bit damp, but OK, so gave it a little bit more rain shelter.
"dipped" the TB "BearBait" as these don't seem to get visited very frequently (shame!) and the only bears in NZ are the edible gummy type! or perhaps there may be some in zoos?
TFTC!

Arrived at the car park for the Taheke Reserve Cache and left the car at 1.45pm. I stopped to have a look at the view of and from the waterfall; little did I know where I would be next!
I started walking along the track and then stopped when it looked like the path was going in 2 directions. I got the GPS working and it pointed me in the direction of the right, so off down the right-hand path I go. It started to go down the hill, didn't think much of it, just thought that the track may need to be fixed up at some point.
I got to a wooden barrier, the top of the poles were orange so I thought, ok over I go and follow the track type thing (Bad Idea! It was probably just a track that water had carved out along the top or where someone may be doing something) Half way down I am thinking, Hmm, then SLIP! Phew, that was close; fortunately I had my new walking pole to stop me from falling down the steep "track". I got out my umbrella and used it as another pole, thank goodness for golf umbrellas! I got to the bottom after a few more slips and then decided to follow what I could make out of a "track" and it led me to the water, the gps had thrown me a curve ball and was telling me to go across the river, thought about it for a sec and turned it off and back on. I checked the GPS and it showed me having to go up the hill next to the one I had just come down. $#!%!
Ok well I better get started up the cliff!! I get over the creek and start to climb. Once again thank goodness for the Pole and umbrella! After a long trek trying to find the safest path up the cliff/hill I reach the ridge, I know it’s not the real path but there is a light one trailing through the bush, possibly a doc track or an animal one. I finally reach the top of the ridge and get a good GPS signal, and soon enough I find the real Path. Phew, no more trudging through the crazy bush, gorse and the unknown.
I start to make my way up the path and finally get to the cache site. Easy to find GZ without a gps as it is right on the path and had a search and found it straight away. Cache is still dry and all is well, Thanks for the cache.
Now on to the Kauri Haven cache!
I started up the track with a few stops along the way to take some pictures and continued along till I got to the corner of the loop track that had another track that branched off to the side. I thought I would be cautious this time, but it was the right one. Took a while to get to the cache site with a small shower in the middle, umbrella to the rescue! Rain wasn’t too bad so I kept on walking. Got to GZ and had a look around, not too hard but the kauri the cache is under is dead and falling apart slowly, possibly in the future it may need to be moved. Wrote in the cache and started on my way back.
I decided to go back along the way I had come instead of continuing around the other half of the loop track. I got back to the place I had crawled out of the bush and followed the path I should have taken. I got all the way back to the place I had started to take the wrong turn. I scratched an arrow into the plastic as to point people in the right direction. I stopped back at the waterfall to have a look at where I had been in the wrong and then continued back to the car park. I got to the car at 4.15pm. It was uncanny! Exactly 2 hours 30 mins! The time it said it would take to take the track to the Kauri Haven end and back, I stopped at the waterfall twice and went rambling down the hill and back up again!
I took a picture of the sign so I could plot where I had trekked and then went back to the car. Just as i was taking my bags off, it started to rain! I couldn’t believe all that had happened. I did the track in the time it said and I got back to the car and then it started raining. I drove home and the last really weird thing that happened! I pulled up and parked, and it stopped raining!!! Someone up there must have been smiling on me. Thanks for the awesome hunt.

Nice walk on a sunny day. Once at GZ cache found with no problems. Planed on a swim but it never happend. TFTC and tha walk.
Have walked the loop track before but not been to the end of this track. A beautiful piece of native bush, explored on a hot summers day, along with Pooke, 90CRX & their friends
Almost abandoned this quest. We were saving GPS batteries and thought we'd just followed the signs to the Kauri Grove. But there weren't any!! When we turned on the GPS we'd gone 1/2 km too far, even overshot the next cache on the agenda. A discussion, some reproachful looks at the team member in charge of GPS's and back we went.Looks got backer as it began to drizzle. BUT the joy of reaching The Track Ends and finding the cache easily, made the extra km worth while. Great bit of bush...TALL. Pity one can only view the waterfall from the top and tiny tantalising glimpses through the tall trees. Work is being done building up the paths to minimise damage to the Kauri roots...work needs to be done on signage! Took the forest loving geocoin for a new view and left a little car. All clean and dry.
This is a must do walk for every cacher. There are Kauri everywhere and nikau nurseries either side of the track. There were even native trout in the stream. It took us 1hr to get to cache but longer to get home cos we kept stopping and admiring the bush. We have been to the loop track before when NZWide had a cache here, but it was great to go “all the way” to the end. Took golf ball and left geocoin (he wanted to be in the forest, well this will blow his lights out). TFTC
Yes!! A first to find at last. Found by the Smith family and a few hardy HoraHora scouts while out for a days hike. Two caches on the one hike made it really worthwhile.
This is a great reserve not often visited - a hidden jewel. TFTC.
