Braided rivers are cool. We saw them roar on the west side of Arthur's Pass a few days ago.

Driving home today at end of Christmas holidays.
We have had a bit of rain so not quite at braided.
Thanks for the lesson on why the rivers look like they do.

We were on an extended weekend trip to the South Island and went down to Ashburton on Sunday afternoon to visit relatives. Spotted this cache on the way back and couldn't resist it. I used to be a mainlander and have crossed this bridge so many times.... unfortunately the photo of the bridge was taken from the car - heavy traffic - so it's not particularly inspiring, but I also included a photo of the plaque at the beginning of the bridge. Great cache, great bridge, TFTC
Found ... we were down visiting family at Lake Hood for 7 or 8 days ... like most days we decided to go for a walk ... we had done the river trail from Tinwald to Lake Hood in the morning & thought we should go for a wander in the mid-afternoon to complete a few more ... this was the last of 31 for the day ... a reasonably easy Earthcache ... it's funny, over the last 35 or 40 years I've probably driven up & down State Highway 1 hundreds & hundreds of times crossing all the braided rivers ... Took photos & memories:LN:didn't SL ... logged without getting permission, and in anticipation, having sent the answers via email ... the 2nd photo is a local cafe & bar from Ashburton with an appropriate name following the cache theme ... TFTC ... #1,595 for us.

This is Day 7 [our final day] of our geocaching holiday down south for the Oamaru Geofest 2017. Heading north now, back home to the Bay of Plenty.
An excellent Earthcache - very interesting, and we did learn a lot, thank you.

We did also notice the lack of water in some of the rivers as well especially after the recent winter.
Thanks for the earthcache and the smiley

We got this one on our way to the geofest in Oamaru. When I lived in Christchurch we got great opportunities to recreate with the beautiful braided rivers. A friend when I was studying was a big fan of jetboating and would do this on the braided rivers and the last time I was here one of our favourite golf courses overlooked a beautiful stretch of braided river. Many have great spots for walking and picnicking. We weren't geocachers then, being new to the hobby so only now can we log this earthcache.
Regarding the Nor'wester our most abiding memory of living with it was when came back from a trip up north to see the family to find that a particularly strong norwester had blown our greenhouse all over the back garden. Got to spend the afternoon retrieving greenhouse panels from all over the garden. The tomatoes were never quite the same after! And as a lawn bowler you wouldn't believe what it does to the track of your bowls.
Thanks for the rather irrelevant memories and thanks for the cache.

We're well into our second week in this beautiful country. I wish I had more time to explore the many, many wonderful things to see and places to go in this country. I'm quite comfortable in New Zealand. It reminds me of home - mountains, glaciers, and the seashore. It's getting close to the end of a three month adventure, mostly away from home. micaparamedic arrived at my place in Washington State toward the end of July and we immediately headed down to Oregon to find some old caches for his Jasmer challenge. From there we headed up north to The Yukon and Northwest Territories in Canada for a few weeks.
We attended the mega APE event in Washington, and the same day headed down to camp on a farm in Oregon where we were directly in the path of a total solar eclipse. Back at my place, we took a few day trips before heading to Australia where we spend almost a month doing many things on my bucket list including walking around Uluru and seeing the Sydney Harbour. Now we're spending a few weeks in New Zealand (which was also on my bucket list) before once again going our separate ways. What a trip!
What fun to see braided rivers. We saw a beautiful example of this up in the Yukon a few months ago.
Thanks for an earthcache here.

I don't know how a Nor'wester wind affects me but I will take not next time!
It probably makes me happy because it will be pushing my home on my bike!

This was all new to me as well. I knew, of course, that the Plains are not as plain as some may think but I did not know about the "braided" rivers, and I did not know what a Nor'West Arch is despite having seen one previously.
So many thanks for the educational cache!
Have travelled over this bridge for a couple of times now, if previous times I held my breath, this time I was preparing for the photo taking. Well, there you go - a photo close to GZ of this earthcache, my Garmin in the frame, and a bit of Rakaia River.
I looked at my past photos, well I have taken one of the Nor'West Arch, last year, just when I had arrived in South Island, but I did not stand under it... Posting that one for now, and if I see the arch again, I'll try and stand under it and take another pic; then post it here
UPDATE: Well, here it is, just a few days later, looked out of the window and saw the Arch! Picture posted. For now, I don't think I've felt any psychological effects from the nor'wester [?]

Amazing rivers. Amazing bridge. You could change time zones on that bridge. Answers sent,
Another great day of sightseeing on the South Island in New Zealand, this was day 7 of our 22 day trip. We were making our way from Christchurch to Queenstown today and had the chance to stop at 3 fantastic earthcaches. Each so different from the other.
We saw our first braided river, something we had never seen before....although from researching we understand there are some in Alaska so we might need to check that out next year when we are there.
We saw 2 lakes that took your breath away because of there stunning beauty and sheer size, Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki.
And we saw some/most of Mount Cook lthough the summit was unfortunately cloud covered and Mother Nature just wouldn't give up a glimpse of her today.
This was our first real view of the complete difference between the north island and the South Island, it is as if they are totally different countries both amazing and stunning in there own right. Thank you to the CO's for placing these caches for us to find they all deserve and will be getting a little blue ribbon.

We have been gathering the photos and information for this earthcache over several visits to the Canterbury Plains. We have travelled and cached over a large area of it during these trips. Happily for us, we both seem to be in the lucky 10% - we fondly remember 11 April 2016, the day the Nor'wester photo was taken. Thanks for the earthcache.
Grand Tour of the North and South Island car with Rusty.C. Amazing journey with many beautiful places. Thanks For The Cache and many greetings from Czech Republic.
have done most of the ground work for this just a bit of research needed when we return to the UK, enjoyed the visit and the trip up and down the bridge, thanks for bringing it to our attention
Should've done this one years ago; the photo even shows me with hair!!! Reminded by walking the Rakaia walkway which is much improved and not too long for a couple of oldies. I wonder how many readers and their families have tried to hold their breath as they cross this river!!!---always a lot of merriment when we tried it.
We didn't try to do this earthcache, but Fevalas and I learned a lot about weather - very interesting!!
Thanks and best regards from Germany

My wife and I were travelling from Oamaru to Christchurch. Using my GPS I took two waypoints at the beginning and the end of the bridge. We stopped just after the second waypoint and calculated the length of the bridge. We then walked to the river to take several photographs. There was a lot of traffic on the bridge. Thanks for this informative earthcache!
We are visiting with relatives in Christchurch and are from Canada. We came down here to cache the Thomson track a few days ago and spotted this earth cache. Since then we have been working to fill the requirements. Thanks to the cache owner for setting this one up. We have had fun researching the braided rivers and especially finding out about the nor'west arche. Our son is in the aviation business and enjoyed educating us on how this phenominia works.
I managed to get on a work trip to Christchurch for two weeks but was faced with a dilemma. Do I go for quantity or quality? I didn't have a vehicle to use all to myself so was somewhat limited to what I could get. In the end I just found what I could when I could but the webcam and the virtual were top of my list.
Went for a drive after finishing up for the day with a couple of muggle friends. We drove over the bridge and back for this cache plus under it in places as we tried to turn the rental van around. Not the best off roading vehicle. Not being a local, the nor' westerly has really effected me apart from trying to blow the van off the road and fanning the Port Hills' fires at the time we were down here.
Logged with permission. Photos to come....

Well, when I first checked this one it seemed like quite an easy task - not so (that is for me!). Anyway, tried to answer the questions and sent an email to CO and hope it's ok! Really appreciated the explanation about the wheather conditions in Canterbury plains. Thanks for placing this one and greetings from Sweden.
Sadly the end of our holiday was coming closer - only ten days left - and we were heading north again.
Our 5000th cache wasn't far away either, it would be in the South Island, but were exactly?
We would know soon. In the meantime we stopped as often as possible without making too many detours.
Many thanks to all the owners for all the great caches we could find!
Awesome river, awesome bridge! Crossing this bridge was an amazing experience!
We had a lot of wind here in the South Island, can't be sure if there really was a Nor'West Arch and how it affected us. We're pretty euphoric all the time since we arrived.
Thanks for the cache and for all the information.

I've gone over this bridge many times and always find myself slowing slightly. It is interesting how when you take the Inland route it can be relatively calm until you cross the open area at the river valleys and then you really notice the NW wind.
Together with arbor95 I am on a holiday tour in New Zealand.
We are two Germans, old friends since a long time. Together we visited a lot of other countries in the past, even before we started geocaching. [^]
For our trip we usually looking for some extraordinary caches.
Therefore we had mostly a lot of fun.
We worked out the answers and arbor95 has already sendt it to the owner.
Thank You very much for this earthcacheand for the challenge.

At World’s End – New Zealand – One of our dream become true.
Our plan was to stay 4 weeks in New Zealand. But this wasn’t this easy to manage at work. So we moved spontanic the plan from march to november. We informed us before about point of interessts. The list was this long so we decided to go by campervan from the north to the south to have the most mobility. We arrived after way to much hours in Auckland and started there our round trip. At first we enjoyed the area in auckland and the north. In Waitomo we were able to see and enjoy glohworms in one of the famous caves. But this area had a lot of nice hiking trails were we could discovered the Piripiri Caves, Natural Bridge and the Marokopa Falls. This was already impressive to see and still the beginning of our adventure for life. The trip went on over Okere Falls Scenic Reserve direction Rotorua. In this area we enjoyed each hour, because each corner was different. We visited the Haumurana Springs – what amazing water -, Blue Lake and Green Lake and relaxed in Kerosene Creek. We liked all the water and in our travel guide we found a hike cloth to the Huka Falls, which ofcourse we did as well. All this flowers were bloom. One oft the Highlights was Wai-O-Tapu. The weather was perfect and all this colors awesome and the geysir a nice shower. By Campercan the to tour went on direction Tongariro Alpine with a short stop at Orakei Korako and the Tongariro River Loop Track. Lu like nice hiking tours and what could be the best for her birthday? Of course the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing. We started early in the morning and walked approximately 9 hours over gras, stones, snow and colorful water. Now we had to leave the Heart of North New Zealand and went over Taranaki Falls to the East Coast with the goal Napier. The weather was cloudy and often raining but a small sightseeing was a must have. The last stop on the North Irland was Wellington. But it was only raining and some streets were already flooded. That’s why we change spontanic our plan and only did the First Cache of New Zealand and went by ship over the Marlboro Sound to Picton. We went over Farewell Spit to the lonely Wharariki Beach with sea lions. On the way back to the big streets we stopped at Waikoropupu Spring and Janie Sesson Shipwreck and drove untypical to Karamea. In Germany we do not have this much and public caves and that’s way we enjoyed this area! Cloth to the West Coast we took a look at the Pancake Rocks. The weather was just raining and so we could not see the Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, but we still visited them. We leaved the bad weather in the hills and enjoyed the Sun at Ship Creek, Thunder Creek, Fantail Falls and the Blue Pools. Wow they were relly blue and this clean and deep. I never saw something similar before. About Wanaka we read a lot in our travel guide and looked forward to it. There arrived we visited the Puzzling World and walked around the sea. Queenstown the next town we drove just through because at this time there was a marathon and it was really campervan unfriendly. So we used the time and drove to Milford Sound and enjoyed the hills surround us on the water. I never felt this small. After we are landed again on land the trip goes on to the Chasm and Clifden Caves and the Clifden Suspension Bridge. Wow what an adventure. At the end we visited a few cities like Bluff, Duneding, Moeraki Boulders and Christchurch were our Trip sadly ends.
At all this places we looked for nice and unique caches which shows us places which we never would had seen without. We enjoyed the nature and wildlife each day and it was really an adventure for life. At the end we drove approximately 5000 kilometeres and felt this relaxed.
Thanks to all owners for placing this caches and this much informations which we got about the particular areas. This was an adventure for life for us. Thanks for this beauty time.

This cache has been on my to do list for quite some time, the hardest requirement for me was getting the Nor'west arch, or rather remembering to take a picture of one! But the other day in Bexley it happened and it was then a matter of waiting until I was back down this way to grab the other info (again), a nearby FTF was the perfect opportunity. Happy to finally get the smiley. TFTC (3247)

I have looked at this Earthcache whenever. Have driven over the bridge - but am usually tired at the end of a journey, or raringto go at the start.....

TFTC. The Rakia river is very much part of the fabric of my family. I love Canterbury's braided rivers.
KotukuSI and myself have been talking about this cache for some time. Finally we got around to completing the measurements.
Required info forwarded to Kiwi Nomad.
I will attach photos.
Thanks Kiwi Nomad for adopting this cache.

Thank you Kiwi Nomad for setting up this earthcache, I enjoyed finding out more about the geography of the Canterbury Plains. Coming from the North Island it has taken two trips to complete this one, now logged with permission. I don't have first hand experience of the effect of the Nor' Wester, but I have often admired the impressive cloud formations seen while driving through Canterbury. I note that my cloud arch photo should have had me in it, I hope to add another photo when the opportunity arises. A favourite for the interesting and varied activities required to earn this smiley.
I first visited the Rakaia River in February last year to do this earthcache but didn't get a nor west arch photo, subsequent visits to Christchurch and I didn't see one until last week, on the way home we stopped to get a few caches along the Waimak and got a photo of the river in flood so not much in the way of braids showing. Interesting earthcache, I've never thought anything of whether the nor westers affect me or not but I do seem to be more tired when I'm staying in Christchurch, I've always put it down to late nights and early mornings but after reading about the nor Wester I wonder if that is the reason. Completed as part of The Great 20152016 South Island Summer Earth & Virtual Cache Road Trip of SJT_NZ & Tregearp involving detailed planning and preparation resulting in scheduled reviver driver stops in the 3200km journey.
There were some challenges, some long days and the odd speeding ticket - yet to confirm who was driving at this point.
We completed 15 Earthcaches and 3 Virtual caches, it would have been four but a navigational error had us drive past the VC and not realise until we were another hour down the road.
To all the Cache Owners thanks for all the effort in putting your caches together, Both VCs & ECs involve quite a bit of research and it was appreciated and made the journey educational as well as enjoying the beautiful scenery.
Completed as part of The Great 20152016 South Island Summer Earth & Virtual Cache Road Trip of SJT_NZ & Tregearp involving detailed planning and preparation resulting in scheduled reviver driver stops in the 3200km journey.

Stopped at the bridge before crossing and took a waypoint on the corner so as to measure the length to the other side. Took a photo of my GPS under the bridge and managed to sneak photos of the river as we were crossing. I will upload photos when I have some WiFi. Thanks for the smiley!
Heading around the lower south island on a family holiday and we are going to pick up a few caches along the way. As many as the wife / mother will let us get away
with. To save time and data, these logs will be shared and written by Roaming-Haywards and The Real Batman. Today we are time pressed to get to Christchurch so only 2 on the radar. This is the last cache for the day and it’s good to finish on an earth cache. My wife tells me as kids they used to try and hold their breath as they drove over it. Not recommended for the driver though! I have done some cycling around the Canterbury area and I can honestly say the Nor’ Wester is a complete nightmare for me. It’s usually a headwind where ever I seemed to want to go and energy sapping hot. The wife used to work in Timaru in retail and she believes it bought the crazies out, like a full moon. Thanks for the cache, R-H and TRB.

November in Europe, the dark month, neighter autumn nor winter: short days, rain, fog. Everywhere unlucky people.

[green] Another big day rainy out with Hanknstone. Started with a walk around a section of Hagley Park while waiting for my front tyres to be replaced, then out to Thompson's Track. Finished off the day with the Metal Mania series - alas, mostly just the odd-numbered items. Did a few Angry Birds on our way back to Rolleston for a pub meal - my first decent meal in over a week, And then home.
Shame there is such a poor view of the braiding from anywhere easily accessible here. The best view is from the bridge tself, but I would probably have a lot of complaints if I stopped in the middle to take a photograph!
Man it is noisy under the bridge! The rain had caused the water level to rise such that I could not get under the bridge on the south end, but access on the north end was fine. Will upload photos later today.
Will change this log to a Found it log once I have CO permission to log.

Caching with capperz and G H 6 7 1 0 chasing caches and numbers across the Canterbury area. Was a great MEGA weekend and thanks to all the CO's whio made it all possible.

Off to the Mega this weekend and a 2 day pass has been granted for Geocaching purposes. It being a long weekend and all there was definitely a plan to get some caches and keep the numbers ticking along. Finished work at 12.00 and waited for the accompanying nightowl19 to finish her school morning. Pick her up and back home to get changed and a bite to eat before heading down the line. There's an event in Rangiora that we'd like to attend and we need to check into our accommodation. All interspersed with few caches too. Today is the planned 200 plus in a day, to be followed by as many types in a day on Sunday, then back home Sunday arvo. Quite the whistle-stop tour. Weather played fair, we ate take aways all weekend. . . . . . . . . . . shameful parenting, and had a great time. Even got to cache with G H 6 7 1 0 too, bonus. We set off at 0600 and were all done by 2000 so not toooo long a day. A few hundred kms driven by G H and in the comfort of his 4 x 4 too.
To all the COs that placed these caches many thanks for facilitating this epic journey and (normally difficult caching target. In Marlborough I've already done so many so big numbers days are nigh on impossible without having to travel out great distances. Most logs were signed G C N being an acronym of our combined caching names. We replaced around half a dozen which were plainly missing on Thompsons Track which will surely help those who follow us.
Apologies for the cut and past logs and last of all T F T C all . Thanks

Many thanks to Kiwi Nomad for this cache!

A great Earthcache to do on a Sunday drive through the area. Sorry the pics are not great.
Waited for most of the winter to get a north west wind here in Timaru. Well it finally came with a vengeance today 4 oct 15. Wow it was windy, we lost a weeping willow out of the garden .
Lucky enough to find a day that was too inhospitable however it was just on Zero degrees C. !

Visited here with Pagenz on a very blustery and cold day. Stopped to do a few nearby caches and as all good sisters do, Pagenz took one for the team and braved the conditions to get the required info. Never seen a bridge as long as that and the scenery while visiting the area was spectacular. Thanks for permission to log.

Logged with permission. Permission was received 1 December 2014. I already had a pic of a braided river (the Rakaia, funnily enough) taken from the car window on the way over the bridge on 23 November 2014. After that I either had no time (or forgot) to take a pic when there WAS a NW arch, or the wind wouldn't play the game when I remembered. Finally got a pic on 13 January 2015, although it's a pretty poor attempt at an arch, and I took it from a moving car again). Anyway, I got there in the end so will date this log in line with completing the last of the tasks.

Started in October with TwoSharpe while out caching for the day. It has taken me a while to get the Nor'West arch photo. Finally got one 2 months later and today I finally completed the cache! Enjoyed the challenge and the day out.
TFTEarthcache. How intersting. We saw the braided rivers when flying over the plains before our arrival to Chch. We were fascinated. A pity I did not take a picture then. Now it will be a picture from the carwindow.
On our way across the South Island we passed also this long long bridge. We made a little stopp at one place which was big enough for our camper and fortunately there was also a plate where the lenght was written and this gave us the chance to answer the questions.
We are not sure, if we have in Germany such a long bridge, even if it not so high. Rivers here are not allowed to meander in the way, we could see in NZ and thats why they are mauch narrower. [B)]

We did most of the work for this one a couple of weeks ago, then mopped up the norwest arch photo a few days later.

For 5 and a half years, this cache has been at or very near the top of my nearest unfound list. I've been waiting for a decent reason to log it and I've finally found a purpose - to fill in a dot day and the last souvenir for August that I needed.
This river has been a source of amusement in many forms over the years; deer, duck, geese and rabbit hunting, camping, tramping and 4wd'ing. We are lucky in Canterbury to have these rivers so accessible. Thanks for letting me log the cache. Cheers

We travel over this bridge many times while on caching trips. Just had to wait until we remembered to take a picture of a Nor'west Arch.
It is something special, when you come to see what the Earth shows.

I had to wait to log this. When I was last on the Rakaia bridge there was no way of showing it was a braided river and no north west arches. But we did attend a wonderful event.
I took this while geocaching in and around Oxford last week. Not wonderful quality as it was taken with my smart phone.

On great tour with Lemmer in New Zealnd we foundamazing spots. Thanks for all of it. Flatrate
I first started making measurements for this cache several years ago, but then didn’t have photos of a braided river or the Nor'West Arch. So, I started taking photos of rivers and Nor'West Arch conditions over the years but then would delete the waypoints or my phone bricked and I lost the photos. So, it has been a while coming. Finally got it all together during a recent tour of the South Island with an overseas friend. And I even got to discover the limitations of the MapSource software by Garmin when determining distances between waypoints. One would think that the Garmin software would be better.
Photos to be uploaded. To me, the Nor'West Arch brings planes in low over my house as they struggle to land on the short runway in Christchurch. The best fun is during he summer when the big planes from Antarctica make the final approach right over our house. In fact, I can judge how warm the day will be by the sound of planes in the morning. I thought that the winds were strong in Christchurch up until I started doing some work in a paddock in Darfield. The winds howled through the property, ruining any chance of making the acoustic measurements I had gone out to make.
Cheers Team Chelmo for the cache! Logged with permission.

We have had this ready for ages but were waiting for a good Nor West arch. This was the best we have ever seen and living in South Canterbury, we have seen a lot. Then last night on our way to ChCh for a Geocaching event we thought this was an appropriate day to log as we were going over the Rakaia River again. Hope you like the photos.
during my trip around NZ, I have found this cache.
