Completed this on the way to getting the caches up on the two Yanky Hats. I had previously done this twice before with caching colleagues, now that I am caching I picked it up on the way through. TFTC

I was lucky enough to have the GZ co-ordinates calculated from pre-fires (and therefore, I presume, pre-new sign). Cache found in good condition after a short climb on the way to summit Mt Gudgenby.

Thanks, Big Matt and Shell.

Unfortunately, it appears the sign has been updated and these clues are no longer achievable with the information given. A shame, hopefully it might get fixed?

After this morning's wonderful Aranda Bushland CITO we headed for Yankee Hat to pickup/revisit a few caches this afternoon. We cycled to the Hospital Creek Hut multi taking 48 minutes for a distance of 4.07km with 162m ascent and just 47m descent. Think I forgot just how far this hut was from the carpark but glad to see that it survived the fires , and that the surrounding bush is slowly recovering. Then we moved on to other caches.

The overall fire damage to this region is significant including the damage to the track and deep ruts/gullies after the recent heavy rains. The surrounding mountains are covered by bare rock slabs and sheer cliffs that are exposed with the trees and shrubs are very slowly regrowing.

We also visited a number of other key cache locations such as "Franks Flat". This hut, more like a house, was certainly saved by the fire fighters as the trees closeby showing no signs of fire damage. Last time we were here we had not seen the massive sheep dip structure nearby as we had arrive from behind the house - the very long way around coming from the south/west.

This cache was good to revisit and I just had to take more photos down the valley which on this occasion was wet and swampy with the Bogong Creek flowing nearby. Last time we were here this area was in drought. I was here just a couple of weeks short of 2 years ago - how time flies. Great to be back for a revisit and cycle/hike around this area before it is closed from midnight tonight to pig boar shooting until just past mid May.

In total, Contesta and I cycled over 3.47 hours for 15.61 kms with 401 ascent/ descent. Another superb warm sunny Autumn day in paradise. I just had to take and post some more photos while I was here for the memories.

TFTC Smile Beautiful autumn day for a walk in these parts. Easy retrieval.

Grateful thanks to CO for placing and maintaining the caches to entertain me on my journey.

THIS CACHE
Finally got to this cache early afternoon as we scheduled its find with a round trip of cache visits across the valley. The area down here is just beautiful with boulders on mass, in all shapes and sizes, sprinkled throughout the grasslands in and around the Bogong Creek. We undertook the required climb for a quick and easy cache find, took photos and enjoyed the scenery. From here we headed across the dry river bed and up the road to Frank and Jack's place just over a kilometer away. After a long walk the small hill climb felt like a big hill climb but we survived. Really worth coming down this way. TFTC Big Matt and Shell.

OUR DAY
Left home at 8.30am, picked up a few others along the way, and headed for the Namadgi NP specifically to walk around the valley where both the Bogong and Middle creeks flow. We used the few caches in this area, mainly Tankengine caches, to plan the day to visit interesting locations while also giving us a good workout though mainly on flat ground. We also picked up a cache along the way to this location then found a couple on our way home at 3pm as we had more time than had anticipated. Today's main walks were over 17.5 km just on 5 hours with a total ascent/descent of 461m in superb sunshine and cool temperatures enjoying the plague of kangaroo of various species.

I decided to travel down from Brisbane to the Mega in Queanbeyan and spend 2 weeks here and in Canberra collecting caches on a rather lengthy to-do list.

Yesterday the scheduled plan had been to go for a walk in Namadgi National Park to visit this long unfound cache on Yankee Hat and the nearby virtual cache, but a fuel system warning light came on in the car only 20 minutes from my destination. With the Easter public holidays approaching I reluctantly turned back and went on the hunt for a mechanic to fix the problem rather than have the car out of action for the next couple of days.

With the issue fixed for the moment, I had to implement a back up plan for the rest of the day and Yankee Hat was deferred until today. Leaving before sun up again, I was aghast to find the fuel warning light come on again in almost the exact same location. Knowing that the issue was not a terminal one, I decided to keep driving today and arrived to find only one other car in the car park (at least someone would be around to help me if the car had an issue restarting Big Grin).

The first job was to collect the information required to visit this cache, which was ably completed. A stop at a couple of traditional caches and then the virtual preceded a climb up to the top of Yankee Hat to visit a rather lonely traditional cache up there. That climb, and the descent, was brutal through steep and dense terrain. Upon reaching the rock art again, I was in two minds whether to continue on to this cache or head back to the car, but of course the lure of just one more cache was too strong.

I initially headed cross country on a direct route to the cache to save distance but eventually decided to follow the trail for easier walking. At GZ I couldn't get the GPS and phone to agree on a location, but then realised exactly where I needed to be. A quick recon of the general area soon identified a suitable way to access GZ and the cache quickly greeted me once I arrived in the right spot. A very cool location for a cache.

On the eventual walk back to the car it became evident that Yankee Hat rock art was the place to be this Easter Sunday, with the car park overflowing with cars and a number of groups on the walking track heading out to the rock art. Was lucky to have had the place to myself when I did. TFTC

I love walking down around here. Always something to see. Today's walk was only 16kms thanks for the cache. I took the pathtag that someone had left. Signed the cache DARKSIDEDAN.

We collected the clues a while ago... but finally on a day walk up Mt Gudgenby managed to collect the final. There is a suspicious looking rock nearby that Loki was most unimpressed with. GZ was another fun spot and after a big of clambering about, located the cache easily. Thanks Big Matt and Shell

Have collected the details from the first point but did not have time to collect the final. I'll be back!

Another one done. Woo Hoo! I love the challenge of the geocache hunt - read the notes, decipher the cache requirements, and go searching for the hide. This is an amazing world-wide game of hide and seek. I love it! I also enjoy caching with my family, and meeting fellow cachers. It really is a small world when I read over cache logs. **Thanks go to Big Matt and Shell** for placing this cache and maintaining it. It's a great contribution to the Geocaching community and much appreciated.

I enjoyed solving this at the onset of the hike, and then finding this one at 3:08:20 PM after 'earning' "Oh My Hat!". Cache and contents all in good order.
TFTC! Cheers. *Jump Pilot* Cool

The sixth and final cache on a very successful caching run. This one I have looked at on many occasions but hadn't had the time to complete on previous trips to the area. I really needed this one as it is a Canberra's Toughest Challenge cache and decided that today would be the best day to collect it. After leaving JohnnyBoyACT, I headed off to GZ. A shortish ride later, with a lot of cramps, and I was at GZ. After a quick scramble, I had the cache in hand. Log signed and cache replaced. TFTC Big Matt and Shell, that's three (3!) Canberra's Toughest Challenge caches for the day!

13-Aug-16
{126} 13 down, 17 to go for Canberra's toughest challenge. TikvaNZ, Fox in Jox and myself collected the required information and double-checked our answers, and then it was off to GZ. A scramble at the end and it was CIH. Sweet!

This was a part of the world that I'd not been to before. (The closest was probably Rendezvous Creek when I picked up Old School Challenge.) The area was incredibly beautiful, albeit a little cold early in the morning.

Tks Big Matt and Shell!

On a caching mission with Fox in Jox and ZQX. The long term mission is to knock off Canberra's Toughest Challenge, and with this cache we are a step closer. I originally collected the information and determined GZ, almost exactly a year ago. This morning we double checked the answers before heading off. Once at GZ, Fox in Jox wasted no time getting up to the cache, followed by the rest of us. TFTC and an enjoyable walk.

A great day in the Gudgenby Valley with ZQX and TikvaNZ. Found eight caches, with the prize being another Canberra's Toughest Challenge cache.

This was the prize - what a great spot for a GZ. A quick scramble up to the box and high-fives all 'round. Another one ticked off the Challenge. Gradually, gradually, getting through the list. TFTC BM&S

We'd been to the starting point last week and photographed everything of interest so it was just down to Mr O to make the retrieval today while on the way to Mt Gudgenby. A quick find in a great little spot. TFTC.

Out hiking with some scouts. Camping near the rock art overnight before heading south to Hospital Creek Hut (via Frank and Jacks Hut) then heading north back to the Yankee Hat carpark. After calculating the coordinates I grabbed this one as we passed the GZ on the hike. A favourite for me, thanks Big Matt and Shell

24-Jan-15
Found as part of a "Lets Get Slightly Fit By Bushwalking" mission that myself and a few scout buddies have going as a new years resolution.

I put a whole load of caches on my gps, not really taking much notice of the difficulty/terrain raitings..oops! However the main thing is - we did the whole loop, we found the cache (and a couple of others!), we didn't hit any kangaroos (one may have almost jumped into the car but that's a different story), we found a dead tiger snake, and we honestly had a good time out in Namadgi this morning Smile

I was going to admit that it took more than one of us to work out the coords from wp1, but that's just embarrassing.

Reperio at 0740.

Having driven from Newcastle last night, I arrived at Yankee Hat car park right on midnight, and got up nice and early to tackle a few caches around Yankee Hat...and specifically this one which I needed to find as part of a challenge cache in another state. Whilst the morning was a little cool, I couldn't have asked for a better day, and with the sun rising over the surrounding hills, the valley looked amazing. I grabbed the required information from the signboard while about 100 knagaroos looked on...and headed off to find a few caches as I looped around to GZ. Once at GZ, I was greeted with a wonderful age old specimen, and enjoyed sitting upon it whilst I signed the log book, and just sat back and enjoyed being in this area once again. A beautiful area, and nice walk.

Gratias Big Matt and Shell.

Found today on a walk with the Canberra Bushwalk Club led by JohnnyBoyACT. I picked up information at the car park and then a couple of caches. Made our way to gz and Rodger (Marmaduke Rothschild) climbed up to make the find. We stopped for morning tea nearby and it was so warm that I used gz to strip off some unneeded thermals. So thanks for the cache - nice multi in a beautiful area with a great hide at the end. Gets a fp from me Smile

It's hard to believe its been nearly 12 months without a find for this cache. Picked it up as we explored the southern end of this area, with a great day of wind, cloud, sun, mist and a range of wildlife including roos, rabbits, wild dogs and parrots. Took Agent Basil Pathtag and Left aussiepuschaks Pathtag. TFTC

Found as part of a day clearing out the valley and placing a cache up on the hat. After some initial trouble with the checksums, I realised that it was all fine and that I just couldn't add.

Great spot for GZ. That funny rock reminded me of a very sad rabbit.

Wow - that's the easiest 10k's I've ever managed in Namadgi. Wink Usually when my caching cohort (Agent Basil) suggests an outing there is no trail; it has around 756 terrain lines; and undergrowth up to your armpits. This however had none of the above - and what's more - there weren't even very many spiders! (Which seem to be quite prolific in the ACT at present). This was caching in leisurely style. Good views, good company and a good trail. Yes...stick to it like glue and don't even contemplate any sort of attempt to cross the creek ... just follow the path and you will find your prize. Of course...we didn't. But that's another story.

35 degrees forecast so on the road by 8 (ish). Yes my caching companion, the contours may look gentle but beware the sting in the tail - it is our own little caching mantra that we use when we snatch defeat from the face of victory. So yes, there was a swamp and swiftly flowing river that needed fording, Scouts went North and South looking for the best place to wade across the raging torrent. Oh...ok...why don't we stay on the road that just crosses it for us - excuse me McPhan, have you found that head slap icon yet ? She who wears the cape was assigned rock climbing duties to make up for past silliness but I did provide the pole for spider web duties. TB left and visited plus a Basil PT left.

First cache of a days walk and caching. A little further down the track than we expected, so we did a complete loop of the bog, camping the night at Middle creek.

25-Jul-10
TaurusSix and I got the clues to this one and then we walked around a few other caches before heading for this one. A tricky approach, but went through to the other side to exit. Took two TBs and left one. Very soon after leaving the sky dropped hail onto us. Took shortcut through the trees back to the car.

#155 - Nice easy find with Canberra_bushwalker after reading the hint. TNLN TFTC.

Found along with Dave2 while mountain biking to the start of a walk up Mt Gudgenby. After a bit of scrambling Dave2 found it okay.
TNLN, thanks.

Found with TankEngine, RexTrex and Sol de Lune with SS watching. Rode to the cache, Coooeeee. (well, rode to the exact coords Big Grin, didn't park my bike on it. A quick find and a nice location. Nice to be back here after a few years, then it was off to some yonder mountain. Thanks Big Matt (& Shell()for the cache.

10-Jan-09
As part of a joint mission to other (high) places in this area, discovered this cache with the team of Tankengine, Sol de Lune and Mtbikeroz - with Secret Squirrel watching us scrambling all over this rock in a caching frenzy.

Took a TB to move it on. Many thanks for this cache Big Matt and Shell - a good excuse to come along this particular track.

Out of interest, our early morning start flushed out many kangaroos, but also two wild white dogs were out there racing around too. Saw one of them again later in the day on our return.

10-Jan-09
Found it early this morning with Soldelune, MtbikerOz, SS, and RexTrex on our bikes, on a mission to a mountain looming in the distance! A nice distraction, and break. Lovely spot. Not too hard to reach the cache. TNLN, thanks Big Matt and Shell!

10-Jan-09
Found with Tankengine, Mtbikerox and RexTrex (with SS-BJC along for the ride) while on our way to greater heights.

Actually funny have 3 cachers standing at the WP all looking for the same info.........but find it we did.

Then a simple 'ride-by' and climb had the cache safely in (many) hands.

Discovered a couple of TB and then it was back on the bike.

TFTC Big Matt and Shell.

Cheers,

1152+12=1164 with Captain Tomato

Well on the way back from Lost German Tourist, we stopped in for a quick bike ride down to this cache. Well it had to be quick because there was rain threatening - you could smell it. We certainly got chased out of that beautiful valley quick smart by the rain. We were getting spits for a kilometre and then 2 seconds after CT got the bikes onto the car, the rain came down in buckets. So even though it was only 12:30, we thought we would postpone lunch until Tharwa.

Yes the valley is so beautiful and green with all the rain. I had a great time riding around on the fire trails - we took two different routes so we could explore more. I loved the ammo box cache after a fun final approach - hop, skip and a jump.

Thanks Big Matt and Shell for placing the cache, and thanks for giving me the opportunity to scope out the approach to where the next Squirrel cache is going within the next 6 weeks.

CT dropped off the 3 TBs from LGT and took another TB.

27-Dec-08
Found with SecretSquirrel-BJC.

A very nice spot to take the mountain bikes for a ride. Had no trouble finding a suitable track to the GZ and then found an alt way home. Just as well because the rain came after us very quickly. We could see the heavy squall progressing down Middle creek. First it obscured Mt Namadgi, then the next peak disappeared and finally the last of the range was obliterated as the rain pelted across the 3km valley from Yankee hat - all in less than 10 minutes.

Left the 3 TB's retrieved from Lost German Tourist and took 1 TB.

Another with albida33

And he made the maths with some answers from me at the waypoint. Was interesting seeing that there was a pine plantation on the way to this cache. Albida33 found the cache and I signed the log and put in a TB TFTC

Another cache with Mr Roo. We did the maths before heading off to the Yankee Hat art site, so had to make a few track guesses but it all seems to be logical and we came to the cache without any cross country work. Found in its hidey hole, and made a few swaps. Thanks.

1621. I had thought I might make an attempt on this one with my flex on Wednesday, but decided to do some xmas shopping instead. Very glad I did as a call from the Winglens teed up a visit for early Saturday morning.

Thewere few cars around on the way down but at least one had our attention as a possible FTF challenger, but no, at the carpark we were the only ones.

So we headed one way and then decided that maybe the other was better, and I'm going to say it was as this was the loop. Very pleasant stroll all the way around with just a hint of marauding pack of dog thrown in.

For a flat spot there are some great views and a top hut to have a squizz at as well.

TFTC and the early morning jaunt.

A rarity in the ACT - a cache left unfound for days. Obviously other priorities are getting in the way this time of year. Yahoo - I have finished my Christmas shopping!

We had been watching this expecting that someone would have the FTF one afternoon after work. But still it remained unfound late yesterday, so on impluse the Winglen/McPhan team made a plan for an early morning start to hopefully beat the Squirrel, MBO, Tankengine and others. Fingers crossed they were still busy with Christmas activities.

I really hate early mornings but for the promise of an *ftf* and a nice walk in Namadgi I can be coerced. Mr W is still handicapped by a bad back, so when I left the house at 0500, he very sensibly returned to bed. Greeted with an empty carpark, we wandered off on a very pleasant walk as the sun rose behind us and the birds sang. Kangaroos everywhere of course. After being a little undecided about the better approach we ended up doing the loop, finding the return along the fire trail a very easy walk. GZ is a very lovely spot with a mouth-watering view of my favourite mountain. An easy find once there, and I left a coin and pathtag for later visitors. Back in the car park there were two more cars, and three mountain bike riders but no cachers. You must all be busy!!

Note to future visitors, we saw a wild dog on the track ahead of us, howling quite a bit. Fortunately he didn't seem interested in hanging around, but we had both picked up a large stick just in case. But think about walking with a partner in this area perhaps.

Thanks Big Matt and Shell - as described, a pleasant walk and lovely spot. And thank you McPhan for your very good company, as always (and making me feel secure that you are much bigger than the wild dogs, even if I'm not Red Face )
