Last night I stayed at Panekire Hut and today I'm off to Maruiti Hut. The weather was brilliant when I left yesterday and today was a bit foul but not terrible. There was no view of the lake when I took the selfie this morning.
As 11hpg11 already reported we finally made it onto the trail with Greenblat, Kiwileon and Littleredhood. But even with one day delay the trail was a stunning experience.TFTEC
After many a delay, our wee group of Alpenmilch80, Greenblat, Kiwileon and Littleredhood finally made it to Lake Waikaremoana to do the great walk. We had to delay our trip one day whilst we kept dry at the Holiday Park and in Te Kura Whenua by the fire watching Cyclone Fili roll in.
We got the first part of this earthcache in the afternoon as we rolled into Panekiri hut for a great nights sleep, cosy by the roaring fire. Had some great evening views watching the clouds roll in. Got the rest of the info the next morning on our way out.
Thanks for the earthcache!

Have been planning a trip for 3 new caches at Lake Waikaremoana and it would have been rude not to do this Earthcache as well. Last week was raining and I didn’t fancy an 8 hour walk in the wet. This weeks forecast was good and I was free for a few days so no more planning, just do it. Left at 8 am for the 2 hour drive to Onepoto. Parked up and final checks. Phone, back up battery, PLB as I’m hiking along, one nights hut pass plus food and water. Hiked up to Panekiri hut which took 3 hours and collected the information plus the Kodak moment. Great views. Then on to the second part. Loved this part of the woods with all the hairy/bearded trees. Makes me think of a Hobbit forest. Collected more information and then on down to Waiopaoa hut. Arrived about 4pm and decided I had enough daylight to go for the next two caches. About 9 hours of walking with sore legs but no blisters yet! Stopped for a wonderful swim to refresh and then back to Waiopaoa hut just as it was getting dark. Time for a good sleep. Back over Panekiri bluff the next day then home Definitely the hardest Earthcache I have done. Thanks for the adventure and smiley.
We loved this cache! Did the walk over 5 days and this was at the end of day 4. The kids loved throwing sticks out over the cliff and having them blow up over the hut!

I came to this excellent area with the family on the Great Walk. Picked up the info for Q1 on one day, and for Q2 on the next. Emailed the CO with the answers.
We had excellent weather for the whole walk, and would highly recommend this walk to anyone who likes to swim.

With three friends I walked the Waikaremoana Track over the period 9-13 November We had three fine days but one very wet day on the descent from Panekire Hut past WP2 down to Waiopoua Hut Just as well it was a short leg While there were many stretches of boggy track around the lower sections after the rain it was still a great scenic trip
Collected the necessary caching information along the way although in the rain at WP2 I had trouble sorting out the two rock forms
Logged with CO permission Thanks edvern for this cache It's quite surprising that there are no other caches on this track except for one at the start

Am very glad to have this earth cache, I actually read the cache description after I had already passed the point and had no intention on backtracking, but as luck would have it I found in my gallery a photo of me at the point described My family and I had a very enjoyable 4 day hike around the lake, staying in the huts and admiring the views and landscapes. Would highly recommend to all! Thank you for the cache

Found on a tramp around the lake with the Wanganui Tramping club. Parts of the track are now closed due to slips so check the website and if possible try and have vehicles at start and finish as local transport is unreliable
Wow what an awesome hike! Did this a little while back and had an amazing time!!
Started the walk in the standard clockwise direction tackling the big hill first. We did not strike the weather being nice so we did day 1 to the top where it rained the whole way. Got to the top in good time and were the first to the hut for the day. Three other hikers joined us from the other direction later in the afternoon. Got the details for waypoint 1. Next morning we we last to leave the hut and we were off to get waypoint 2. Down the hill on the other side. The weather was a bit better today but still some rain. At waypoint 2 we got what we needed and carried on our way down the hill. Great walk here over the four days. Pity the weather was not better.
Walked this Great Walk solo over New Years and made sure I found the needed info on this one while I was there. What a magical place - will definitely be back. Found the info I needed, took some photos then continued up to the Bluff to spend New Years. TFTC!
Found while walking Waikaremoana anti clockwise. In the rain. The weather is meant to improve though.
What an amazing place to visit we set off from home on Saturday morning did a mystery trip for the family took us 8 hours to finally reach our first nights accommodation. it was lovely right beside a lovely lake. The next day it was exploring time This walk to the Earthcache is such a lovely walk full of stunning trees and greenery all around and with the added bonus of great views of the lovely Lake Waikaremoana. took about 5 hours with the odd break here and there for lunch and a breather or two as it was up up up then it came to the stair case and I thought is it safe and yes it was even though we went up one at a time to make sure. Then to our surprise we had finally made our destination, an old hut and a busy one but the view point was gorgeous. Permission from the Co to log this Earthcache. a great place to put an Earthcache and so worth the visit. Thank you for placing an Earth cache here. favorite point given. TFTEC
Found the answers on days 1 and 2 of our walk, starting at Onepoto. Very hot, with a temperature in the mid twenties, which made for a very hard climb up the ridgeline. But it was certainly worth it, with fantastic views along the way. This was an interesting Earthcache which inspired me to look up a bit more about the interesting geology of the area. Logged with permission - TFTC.
Beautiful weather made for a wonderfully scenic walk up to Panekire Hut. Camped the next two nights at very nice campgrounds as we walked around the lake. A very nice area to spend time in. TFTC
Nice Task during one of the best hikes I ever had with my wife last year 2016 over Christmas. Logged with permission

Found during a very nice walk from Onepoto to the other side of the great walk. I started at 12:30 PM. The plan was to do the whole walk during about 12 hours. But I have to stop at about 22:30, when my headlamp went off. So have to stay overnight in one of the campsite shelters. With out any sleeping things, I just put all things I have on me to keep me warm. Nice experience. So many stars on the sky. A lot of different wild noises during night woke me up. I woke about 5 and started to walk at 6:20 agan.
I reached the end at 9:40. So during about 13 hours of walking and 54 km with visiting the Korokoro waterfalls.
Very nice lake and really great walk.
Thanks for this nice earthcache.

We completed this great walk and had 4 days of good weather! Our trip so far has been dogged by rain so it was nice to get a spell of rain free days. Enjoyed the walk and it has given us the stimulus to do more great walks! Picked up the answers to this earth cache along the way although went passed the rockface before realising our error and retracing our steps. The GPS was pretty useless here. Thanks for the cache as there are no others on the walk
I completed this Earthcache while undertaking the Great Walk around Lake Waikaremoana. It was a lovely walk around the Lake with great views from the Panekire Bluffs. Answers for the Earthcache questions have been emailed to the CO. Thanks for the Earthcache!
Handraweil and I did this magnificent trail at the last three days. We had a lot of fun and very good views.
Thank you for that cache and a lot of fun with our pictures.

Made it to the hut, and then completed the remainder of the track. Unfortunately the weather was terrible, howling southerly winds, driving rain and a temperature of 4 degrees. Because we had a class of primary aged students ( 11-13 year olds) that we needed to keep safe we didn't stop to collect info required. Did manage to get a photo towards the top of the bluff before the weather closed in though.

A Great Walk! I did the route counterclockwise, and ran most of my way. I made sure to grab the info and a photo on the way up, and spent the night at the hut on top. An awfully windy day, so didn't really get to enjoy the views. Thanks for the fun EC, a great T5 that you really earn!
On a great nice walk, i found thise cache.
Eine wirklich schöne Wanderung. auch mit dem wetter hatte ich glück.

Day 1 of Cyclone Evan coincided with day 1 of our great walk schedule which made it an interesting climb. Will have to do it again and hope for better weather to see how amazing the view must be from up here. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience in this piece of paradise. TFTC
This was a challenge for me, getting my head around understanding an earth cache and in three parts, but it was fun thanks to gailcurrie10.
The walk was great, a pity we didn't get the best of views on day 1. What a great part of the country.

Went walkabout with a group of 18. 3 of us were geocachers and subsequently found information required. Thanx to Lornamack and Telstarxri. Loved the walk-weather awesum after our visit to Panekiri (see photo views haha). Especially enjoyed the Waikareiti walks and Sandy Bay hut (like a little bit of Paradise). TFTC-it always makes one really 'notice' more stuff about an area /Users/gailcurrie/Desktop/mail.jpeg
Beautiful hike around the lake, enjoyed the many nice views, where lucky to have sunshine on our way up to Panekiri hut!
My muggle friends and I did a leisurely circuit of Lake Waikaremoana ... leisurely, that is, except for the bit that goes UP to GZ for this cache. Fortunately for us the weather, which had been miserable a day or so earlier, was much better on the day of our ascent, and so we could appreciate the light effects in the now-glistening rainforest, and then ooh and ahh at the great views we had on reaching the summit (it should be noted that the oohs and ahhs were punctuated by occasional huffs and puffs!). Appropriate bits of information were gathered along the way (well, I hope they're appropriate), and the geological wonders that are Lake Waikaremoana and the Panekiri Range were appreciated by most of me (my knees had the occasional little sook about the whole idea!). Thanks for the cache, edvern. The photo was taken on the afternoon of our ascent; next morning as we were about to commence the downward leg it was quite misty up on top, although it later cleared.
Did this earthcache during our three day trip on the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. Really enjoyed the walk even though it was quite cloudy and the views weren't the best on the first day. The track was quite muddy as well. Still we thought the walk was beautiful and really nice!

Really enjoyed and liked the Lake Waikaremoana Track. Didn't see a lot of people. In the first hut (the Panakire Hut) there were only two others and we played cards. In the second hut (the Marauiti Hut) we were all alone. Unfortunately only the one cache on the way, but it was a very nice one!

great cache opportunity during a really great walk, even when it rains. don´t believe the Lonely Planet people, who tell you in their guide that this ist a crowded area. we´ve been on this walk for three days and did not see that much people apart from some hunters and fishers. unfortunatly we did not see that much of the Lake when we climbed over the Panekirir Bluff. The whole day was misty and rainy - but its a rainforest, it should rain!!
Thanks for showing and log permission!!

Caval and I did the Lake Waikaremoana great walk. Our first stop was Panakiri Hut where we started to "work" for this cache. The view was wonderful after the exercise we had.
On the next day we completed the questions.
Thank you for placeing an earthcache up there. Many greetings from Switzerland.

My second Great Walk so far and I really enjoyed it. I did it in 3 days. I absolutely can recommend this walk. And of course nice to do geocache on the way as well... TFTC.
Wasn't really prepared for this cache.
Was at Waikaremoana with a friend doing a training run for a multisport race to be held here in a few weeks. We were just walking/ jogging up to Panakiri for the afternoon and return, when i remembered that i had downloaded some cache info for this area so turned the GPS on to see where they were and found this earthcache. Unfortunetly we didn't have time to carry on the further 3kms to the other waypoint to gather the info re the rocks.
Oh well maybe another time Gathered other info required before realised where other cords were so have posted pic's anyway.
We had a fantastic arfternoon.

Thank you for the Earthcache on the Great Walk around the Waikaremoanalake.
It was a nice walk and we had beautyfull weather, just the first day it was a bit chilly and windy at
the Panakirihut. But once the wet wood was burning, we all enjoyed it.

This is a great Earthcache where you learn how the Lake is formed. Furthermore you'll see an extremly beautiful Lake. I can recommend this cache to everyone who like to tramp. The photo coming later (with permission of the owner, a very kindly woman) then I have access to a computer. TFTC MacBanger
I returned to walk the Lake Waikaremoana circuit again, and by an incredible coincidence met MacBanger with his GPS on the track near Panekiri hut - in the process of completing his answers to this Earthcache. It was nice to meet you MacBanger!
Went along with Rumo and Rala for this great multiday. As you'll note from their log, we arrived in very cloudy weatherand limited views. As it cleared off later in the evening and next morning - wow! Would definitely like to head up that way again. TFTC
Cool to have an earthcache along the way when going for a multiday. While Auckland was drowning in rain, we had sunshine and even got a bit of sunburn during our breakfast on the porch of the Panekire Hut the next day. But we did not know that when we took the photo directly on our arrival at the hut. The views were great before, but then clouds drifted through the woods (nice rays) and closed in on the lake like curtains being drawn. Anyway, we had our photo. Little did we know what an amazing morning was about to happen.

We made the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk 15-18 March. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't great the day we took off and we couldn't see the lake the first day and a half - a shame after climing up to the top. It was wet and muddy and a bit slippery, but it was a Great Walk! Our photos are quite different from the ones posted on the website.
