11-May-24
Having finished looking at some open homes nearby, we decided to pick up a few caches before heading home (as you do).We parked up and headed for GZ, but realized we were being watched - turned out they knew exactly what we were up to as they were geocachers too. Nice to meet you Nufrat.A nice straight forward find. Then we had a look around before grabbing a cache further along. Thanks for setting this up

11-May-24
In Glen Afton with rattll on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Parking up, we were delighted to encounter nufrat at the railway station. Had a good chat, then went back to caching. A pleasant wander to GZ, and an easy find. Log in good condition. Signed, and returned as found. Tftc!

07-Apr-24
Well camouflaged. We are staying here in the camper, to ride the train tomorrow. Very interesting place here, and very friendly folk who run the trains.

04-Jan-24
Mrs NZT and I decided to have a road trip day today. Left home at 6.30am (crazy I know when we are on holiday but then this is holiday enjoyment for us!!!), drove lots of kms all over the place and back home in time for dinner with a nice haul of smiles (we mostly had smiles today woohoo).Had a very enjoyable walk from the other cache here to this one. Although I know what the hint item is I got fully distracted by a discarded cigarette lighter that I thought was the cache but couldn't get opened only to then expand the search and of course found the actual cache. Thanks for the cache and for bringing us to a cool spot.

04-Jan-24
A last minute plan was hatched for Keylev and Mrs NZT to have a girls day out in the Waikato today. We started out early in the day. grabbed a coffee at Mercer and then started caching. We had a great day driving around lesser travelled roads and enjoying the sun. Got a few newer adlabs completed and also a number of other more traditional caches. Thanks to all the CO's for placing and maintaining the caches. Finally finished back in Pokeno with a well deserved ice cream and after 11 hours caching we were ready to head home for some dinner. A GREAT day out.TFTC!

14-Nov-22
2 for 2 today as I'm looking to find all of the caches in Pukemiro. TFTC

02-Oct-22
A nice walk before the trains started for the day, tftc

25-Aug-22
We were in the area for the geotour Earthcache and visited the Bush Tramway Club (sadly not running today) so picked up this trad too. Quick easy find, cache is a bit rusty but dry inside. TFTC Psychrn / alunb.

05-Jun-22
It is Queen's Birthday weekend and we are caching with Team Welsh in the Waikato. Today we started in Huntly in the early morning fog.
Parked up at the station after doing the other trad, and wandered along the tracks to this cache. All very nicely maintained here. Thanks.

04-Jun-22
I was convinced I had found this one as it didn't show up on my GPS but it must of been just outside the grab of caches that I made. Here with Mr and Mrs KC and signed the log just in case as I couldn't check online due to a flat phone. Interesting place and appreciate all the maintenance. TFTC

13-May-22
Really neat camo cache!! Tftc

13-May-22

02-Oct-21
Nice rusty camo along with a nice new log a neat little adventure..thanks for bringing me here we only found this area by accident and had no intention of visiting...sure glad we did ..
Love the area

02-Oct-21
The best places are those you don't plan on visiting!! We came this way for an earthquake cache but couldn't resist looking in here. Missed all the activity by one day! In some ways just as well as we could check it all out without having to worry about others. Cache all good here. Thanks for maintaining this cool cache location alunb.

23-May-21
Replaced the log while I was at the club for a working bee

03-May-21
Out with Merlot58 and Nette1234 we were doing the nearby earthcache and went to check out why there were so many parked cars here. It was the first Sunday of the month and the trains were running. A great atmosphere with lots of muggles around. Quick find here with the hint TFTC

02-May-21
As we walked to this cache from the busy station the jigger came along Is it a truck or is it a train? I think it was a bit of both. The driver pulled up alongside us to change the track and we had a quick conversation about driving a train with a steering wheel!

02-May-21
Open day today.
A quick walk from the station.

20-Mar-21
Found it with great company of Aiden29 on our way back from Hamilton area.
Many thanks for showing us this place!
We will probably never visit this spot if there is no cache here.
Very quiet today so we had good time to enjoy this area by ourselves.
TFTC

20-Mar-21
I received a message from Tramyard asking if I wanted to head to the Waikato to complete a number of adventure labs around the area. Even though I was in Hamilton for work this week I didn't have a chance to travel out to attempt these ALs and as it's always fun with others I agreed to join him.

We ended up in the Hamilton Gardens and were making our way back to Huntly to complete the new adventure lab there. Tramyard suggested we take the back route and pick up one of the geotour earthcaches and a few other bonus caches along the way.

It was a nice surprise to find this railway station in the middle of nowhere. The gates were closed, so we parked outside and walked up to GZ. It was nice and quiet on the walk to find the cache.

12-Feb-21
Wow visiting my old cache. In the north waikato clearing up unfound caches. This one brought me happy memories. BTW I put another small piece of paper in the bag.

29-Sep-20
Located this one, but unable to sign in due to the log being soaked, and unfortunately didn't have another one with me, plus there is no room to replace the cache with another.

TFTC.

29-Sep-20
Took a while to find. Very rusty and log book totally wet so only managed a couple of letters and no date. Enjoyed the stroll up here and no one around as it was closed.

12-Sep-20
Mrs B and I decided to have a look around the Huntly area this morning and called by here to have a look. It was not a open day so all quiet on the tracks. After looking at one or 2 spots we honed in on the right area and placed my hand on the cache soon after. The log was extremely wet but just managed to sign without doing too much damage. TFTC.

01-Jun-19
Made the walk down the tracks to this one, the train went past while I was at GZ. Some possums been near GZ too - Thanks Alunb.

Nice container - chilly morning. TFTC

21-Mar-18
After finishing up work this morning, down South Auckland way, I decided to reward myself with a drive in the country side. Making my way back to state highway number one now. After finding "coal was king" I drove around to the other end of the track and made the short walk to GZ. Checked one spot before finding the goods at a second spot. Cheers for the cache placement!

26-Jan-18
Not really sure the correct way to get to GZ but parked my car at the top of the hill and followed the tracks to GZ. GPS seemed to play up a little but hint was well clear on where to look. The replacement cache was found nice and dry and secure - all good here TFTC! Big Grin

28-Jan-17
It's nice and quiet here today although there are people from the club sorted about. Cache found quickly. It was interesting to see they are trying to take the line right back out to Glen Afton and hope to achieve this by 2019. Good luck to them. This place is good to visit when you want to find caches without lots of people around.

31-Dec-16
Have often intended to come out here for a look, so what do we do but come on a day when nothing was happening! At least it made it easy to go grab the cache, now we are more determined to come back and see things running. TFTC

30-Dec-16
Would like to come back on an open day. Thanks for the hide.

New cache container and log placed. Updated with new coordinates

28-May-16
As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

22-Nov-15
Out for weekend of caching using our favorite touring method - Choose the route by random cache selections - even better if they are away from towns and main routes:-)

We didn't get to GZ to actually look for this one as our time window didn't allow for walking up the private road ( no driving permitted at gate) to access GZ. but did find very interesting water feature in the river running the other side of the main road - looks like a wear - perhaps even a water supply or generator - given there was an outlet pipe and what looks like the remains of power cables on the bank of the little car park?? any clues??

Cache may need to be moved. Told by train people they cutting the trees on the area as a danger to track. So assume cache tree maybe cut down. They do not know what a cache is so will probably miss it

19-Jul-15
I don't know what it is about this cache but this is the second time I have been here and this is the second time I have logged a DNF.TwistedSad

28-Dec-14
My first cache find

25-Oct-14
A big day of caching today... We have plans to clear out a few caches around Huntly, attend our event in Ngaruawahia... and most importantly, have A Night of Terror in the Hakarimatas. Gap (of Fap and Gap) and I have started early...

A multi-million dollar industry nearby, and we couldn't get mobile coverage out here... We didn't place this in our saved files either as we hadn't planned on venturing out this way. Luckily, I had the caching app open with nearby caches showing. It was a matter of navigating as close as possible and taking a potshot at ground zone... That looks like a good place for a hide... It was. TFTC.

25-Oct-14
9.50am - Had no plans to visit this area, but with these caches so close to HUntly thought we should attempt to find. Had to use our caching skills a little to find as we had no phone coverage, amazing steamed location. SLTFTC

13-Oct-14
Very quiet here on a Monday morning. I found cache on the ground so placed it where I think it should be. Our boys love trains so we must bring them back here again soon.

29-Jun-14
Great place to wander around, plenty of history here, must come back again when the train is running.
TFTC

07-Jun-14
Found with alpenmilch80 via a long way from Auckland to Hamilton; a chance to stretch our legs. Luckily it was a muggle free day. Predicted where the cache would be on approach to GZ and sure enough, there it was! Thanks!

07-Jun-14
After the Auckland WWFM XI event slieschke and I made our way down to also attend the Hamilton one. Collected this cache on our way and enjoyed the trains around GZ. TFTC

18-May-14
What a cool spot to spend an hour or so. One of the workers kindly let me wander around the place, having a look at the various railway equipment from a bygone era. Very interesting. TFTC

07-Feb-14
Such an interesting spot! Very peaceful in an early Friday evening, except for the world's biggest cicadas near GZ Smile. Cache was soon in hand, is in great condition. TFTC!

01-Mar-13
Nice area with the old rail history.
Soon located the cache. SL TFTC

26-Feb-13
Walked up to the tram yard but the place was full of muggles (maybe something to do with the 'for sale' sign at the bottom of the drive) so backtracked & approached from the other end instead, ignoring the no entry sign just before GZ (oops!) Amazing to see all the old machinery, TFTC

23-Feb-13
4.30pm. Commenced to go up one access road but a car stopped next to ours at the locked gate and we worried they may molest our car so back we went and drove up the other road. Parked by the railway line. Enjoyed looking over the old wagons. Found the cache easily. Left a pathtag. Then noticed a guy in a visi vest heading toward us. Said if we wanted to get out before he locked the gate we needed to now - we got the message!! Great cache location - gets a favourite from us for that.

21-Aug-12
Was sitting around at home pondering things when the urge to head out caching got the better of me. Grabbed my torches, GPS, pen and warm jacket and hit the road. Close to 40min later I was pulling up at the junction trying to decide which way to go…. follow the sign that pointed towards the Train station or the coal mine…. No brainer really. Parked up the car grabbed the torches and headed off up the driveway.

A short walk later I was upon a set of tracks and followed them towards GZ. Darkness had defiantly fallen by this stage and there was an eery feeling as I got closer to GZ. Suddenly from behind me I hear a scurrying. I flash my torch up into the tall trees towering over the tracks to see two beady eyes shining back at me. Never had a gardian of this sort when caching and it certainly speed me up a little.

The cache was quickly found and signed. Now to walk back past the gardian. Thought that shining the torch into its eyes may help…. turns out no… lets just say it was a quick run back down to the car and off to the next cache.

Busy place today being the first Sunday of the month. We followed the train, with its muggle filled carriages, and soon had the cache in hand. Glad to finally locate this one. Lots of hard work obviously goes on around here on the big boys toys TFTC.

26-Nov-11
We were on a mission to find a large number of caches today and this was on our list. Once we arrived at the correct access point it was not long before we were at GZ. We looked at some of the likely spots but were unsuccessful in locating the cache. Had to move onto our next cache so went on our way. We will be back!

23-Nov-11
Spent a bit of time here trying to decypher the hint. Still couldn't make heads or tails out it. Then tried to find it amongst all the items there at the GZ but all to no avail. DANG!!!!

13-Nov-11
Had a really good look but no luck, battery was getting low, so accuracy tends to be worse. Will definately have to come back to this cool place for another look.

01-Oct-11
Quick find, after working out where do I start, and getting lucky. Mrs dragon wants to now come back when it is running so guess I'll have to find some more caches. TFTC

[Today I came with some people from both the Auckland and the Waikato Steampunk Associations, as we descended upon the Pukemiro Bush Railway for a day of anachronism and mayhem. I came across Lady Heloise and Percy and their son William from the WSA, who are also keen Anomaly Hunters. Together we hunted for a temporal anomaly here, as the Home Office had informed me of an anomaly in the vicinity] OOC:I had downloaded the *.loc file to my TomTom GPS unit. [However, as has already been stated, "Co-ordinates appear to be hard to narrow down due to the amount of nearby metal". There is, indeed, much metal at the location, including many disused and retired locomotives. There are also many hills nearby, and this proved to add to the confusion,] OOC:our 3D driving map showed our car as driving down the middle of the Waikato river while leaving the site at the end of the day.

[This was my very first anomaly hunt. It was great fun trying to find it, even though we never actually located the anomaly. We were already heading to Pukemiro with the Auckland Steampunk Association anyway, so I decided to do a bit of temporal anomaly hunting while we were there. It was great trying to find the anomaly at such a beautiful location, and on a wonderful day out with other anachronists and time-travellers. I think perhaps that may have been the problem. We may well have arrived at Pukemiro at some point in time before this anomaly began. Oh, the joy of temporal paradoxes!]

OOC: All of my Geocaching logs will speak of "temporal anomalies" instead of caches.

30-Apr-11
On a night caching mission around the Waikato region to find lonely caches (>5km from any other) that we haven't already found, in order to complete the NZ lonely cache challenge. Left Auckland at about 1730 and got to bed at about 0345 in the morning. This was the 9th of 9 finds for the challenge tonight and another one taking me to a spot off the beaten path, and where I don't think I have ever been before. Driving from here back to Huntly at night is like something out of the China Syndrome or something with all the lights, and the tunnel. Spent quite a while searching here for the elusive non-magnetic keyholder before resorting to a phone call to the previous finder/hider - they didn't seem to mind the 1:30am phone call. Even with their description, it still took quite a stretch of the fingers to retrieve. I think I left it slightly easier, but still safely tucked away. Interesting spot, but the possums in the trees were trying their best to scare the wits out of me. TFTC!!! Big Grin

20-Feb-11
What a fascinating place, very interesting. Zeroed in on a definite GZ area and searched and searched and thought we were going to be empty-handed on this one, felt quite disappointed, but Paua luckily caught sight of something on the ground, just a glimpse of something familiar, way out of reach. Managed to retrieve it, signed logbook and replaced in a suitable spot. There is no magnet attached. Watch out for WASP nests!! TFTC.

29-Dec-10
Magnets have come adrift, but the cache is still safe.
