I feel cheated by the T rating. My van has good clearance but some of those ruts were deep. Glad to finally make it to the finish though.
Last for the day (except two at the t junction)
Great place to add in a nod to Onslow Fisherman (never got to meet you, but have heard a bit about you). Attached photo shows his domain, at the gate to Lake Onslow from the north.
• doing an Onslow Saturday drive, and stopped here on the way.

Quickly found WP1 and our first view of Lake Onslow. Things are very dry so the road is great driving. Views were amazing. Grabbed final cords and saved for later in our trip.
Thanks for getting us to stop here. Really great trip with Hal2929 and he even said towards the end that he would be back for another visit.

I shifted my snail shell to Roxburgh yesterday for a few days to enable me to locate and sign off a few caches up in thar hills.
There was a fisherman nearby so had to use a bit of stealth here.
Cheers for the cache.

Looked hard around the object but no luck. The wind was cold and strong so continued on in the warm ute.
I was invited to Millers Flat for the weekend to wallpaper some feature walls in a new house. With two thirds of the work done on Saturday and 2 nights accommodation paid for, I decided to drive into the hills before tea at the pub.
I grabbed coords on the way in... multis back in the day could literally be miles away from waypoint.. will I have time to collect before tea at 7.30?
I decided to take the risk, its amazing how much opening and closing a gate twice slows you down though.
A quick find, hasn't been officially found in a while, but was found by some kids while looking for worms... Onslow Fisherman's legacy live on.
I arrived back at the pub at about 7.45... a very enjoyable evenings drive and a great steak feed at the pub.

Finally we found the right moment to get here and it was definitely worthy. Landscape is so different! WP#1 took us a while to find, but final was very fast. We enjoyed lunch time there and a bit of sun as well. Then suddenly major cloud and rain came and we were worried to get back, but the rain wasn't so heavy and road was ok. It was really nice trip, thanks!
Stopped here on the way towards Styx via Lake Onslow this afternoon. Found the waypoint after a short search and noted (thankfully) that the final was in the direction we were heading. Drove to the final location, it was very windy so not all that pleasant but it would be a lovely spot in the right weather. Found the cache fairly quickly, signed log, and when I returned to the vehicle it was surrounded by a big group of inquisitive cattle. Thanks for the enjoyable cache, gets a favourite point
Was getting a little worried when the clouds started moving across. There are some nice views up here but I miss the trees. SL TFTC
WP correlated and tile had a bag change. Wiped some rust off the thingey after still looking for the hint. Drove to the final and parked up at the turning area. Fisherman arrived not long before a farmer and after having some lunch and a chat left the scene and walked down the GZ out of sight of the muggles. Found the wee box in good dry hide and SL with the WM_ and changed the baggy. Cito'd some tins and ABC bottles for fundraising. Returned cache to hide and departed for the drive back to town. Passed a grader about to make his turnaround and shouted him a cookie for letting me sneak ahead of him. The road has had some attention and wasn't the gut wrenching ride like last time. Still looking for gate 15. Completed my BIG OE (Onslow-fisherman Experience) to Lake Onslow. Thanks for leading me here Jim, all is well.
What an awesome place to come. I will have to get a fishing rod and license I think as I seem to end up at a lot fishing locations while Geocaching. This was a nice and easy multi to get while up this way. TFTC
After having explored this area on paper while doing the write-up about the Teviot Woolshed http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC2V913_old-stones-first-phones-central-otago it was exciting to jump in our new cache mobile and explore in person.
What a huge, huge area! It's hard to believe that the original Teviot Run reached right up to the waypoint for this cache (the boundary ran through Mt Teviot and the Dismal Swamp, now Lake Onslow http://img.geocaching.com/cache/large/6aa593e1-ddd2-4336-aea9-3c522ae414fc.jpg .
Enjoyed this multi - the waypoint is at a great viewpoint and the final suited us nicely for lunch. A place only fishermen know! Fun spotting the fishers spaced out around the edge. A fisherman saw me searching for the final and taking travelbug photos so came over from his van to show us photos of the spectacular sunrises and sunsets over the lake.
Apparently it is not a good fishing season this year, because there are only low cicada numbers, but usually it is a very good fishing area with the highest daily bag limit in NZ. And, he knows a person who caught a 10 lb trout in the middle of the lake.
Thanks for the fun OF!

This was a fun wee multi with great views of the lake in front of us and also My Benger, Old Man Range and the back of the remarkable's behind us. First stage was a cool place for for the cache and the final was only a few hundred metres away from where we were. This multi deserves a favourite point:) TFTC Jim.
Took a while to find the final cache here as we loaded this one into the truck GPS as we did others on the way. Truck GPS only got us within 40m. There were lots of rocks but got there.
found with muzzer, took a bit to find but got it in the end.long way back to get co ords again.TFTC
Found cache after a short hunt while on camping trip to Lake Onslow with geo sister and brother in law 'Tillerpilots'. Recorded coordinates for part two of the multicache. TNLN
Found the first waypoint - very impressed with it!!

quick find,wp 1 was just clearing from fog as we arrived,so got some glimpses of lake
stopped at wp 1 to try start the tractor, and grab the coords.at the final, a family was camped, so bum went for a swim to distract them while worker sneaked the cache.heaps of fish jumping , but none near the dad who was fishing.
Found wpt #1 after about 5 mins, I only realised it was a multi on opening up the container and viewing the contents. As we were going in the wrong direction to pick up the final, it will have to wait until next time through here.
I thought the title was a rather wry comment on the objects at the waypoint location.

Found WP1 easy enough, There were a pair of sneakers at WP1 that had seen better days. A fisherman near GZ but was out of view when we grabbed final. Great spot
Found a very old pair of sneakers at WP1. Looks like a couple of animals had a fight over them. Cache was easy to find after using the hint, however the long grass did hamper efforts. After turning around at Berry Apt, we came back to get this cache. A fisherman was in his ute having lunch near GZ, but we were able to retrieve and replace the cache out of vision. TFTC
Arrived at the given GZ and managed to grab the required information, BUT due to time restraints and not being able to get to the final GZ before dark we will have to leave this one until our next visit to this area. We managed to bring a couple of friends to visit waypoint 1, but they wont be with us the next time we come this way, Marmaduke and Princess Fairy Floss and we were really happy as this was the first spot that we spotted Lake Onslow in the distance. We will be back!
We had a marvellous spot for picture taking from the waypoint. Quick find at the final and there were a few fishers parked up on the shore. TFTC

A good long range multi. A car load of fisherman near GZ when we approached. They had no fish but at least we got the cache OK. Had a short chat and on leaving overheard a comment "what a long way to come for a plastic box!". TFTC
Found waypoint 1 on the way to several other caches and the final on the way back from the furthermost.
Waypoint 1 took us a while in a cold southerly wind. We must be feet 2nd as we spent the rest of the afternoon following in the footsteps of Feet First (our good orienteering friends).
I actually think that the waypoint was a more memorable and stunning spot that the final. Absolutely loved it. Cheers Gav [6656]
Lovely contrast of blue and gold - lake water and surrounding grasses.
Truely fanstastic spot. TFTC.

After a previous visit to this cache, which was unsuccessful as the cache was missing, and we possibly weren’t looking in quite the right spot, this time it was an easy find. The fisherman who had arrived just before us was as surprised as we were that neither he nor we had the place to ourselves. TFTC

We had a go at getting to the series of caches at Lake Onslow today and this was going to be our first one for the day BUT discretion was the better part of valor as the snow on the road was getting pretty thick and it was starting to snow as well. The 4WD was doing well but as we were up here alone, we pulled the pin on these caches and have vowed to return in spring to find them. We headed down to Roxburgh to find a couple there instead. [^]
A cold wind blowing up here at the moment,so used the clue and got back into the car as soon as possible.
Found 17/4/10 O.F. clearly knows all the grass tracks about here.Met up with one of his mates at wp1and had a bit of a chat.TFTC
Tima Burn road was a bit corrugated at the bottom, but Lake Onslow road was in great condition. We had found this cache in its previous location, but while here today to do the five new caches thought we should look at it again. The younger generation did some fishing while we checked the cache - cache OK but no fish.
+ a balloon, - nothing.

I can understand why there are cribs out here as it is a beautiful area and would be a fishermans paradise. Beautiful day and the Lake looked really good - a bit different to the horror tales I had been told on the way over.
Thanks

Have checked this out and the original container has gone. I have replaced it with one of the same size and type and also with the same contents. Also I have found a new hiding spot very close by, one that should prove to be muggle proof (who can guarantee) and well above high tide.

Now we know why we Failed, but still worth the trip around to this side. Thanks for taking us there.
If "Bitsprayer" can't find it it has most likely gone walk about. Will take this off the listings until I can get up there to check. Still trying to get my mobility back after hip surgery.

Well no luck for us today we hunted high and low both sides and up and under.

To say we were frustrated when this cache was published only a week after we found the Lake Onslow cache would be an understatement, but we were absolutely devastated to go all the way back today, and fail to find the cache. We searched all the rocks in the area, had our lunch, then returned and searched some more, but to no avail.
We may be from Hamilton, but have been out here several times before, so had some traction on the location of WP#1. We also guessed in advance two likely areas for the final, and the second of these proved correct. It still took a little while to track down the container though.
If you come here on a hot day, look for skinks sunning themselves on the rocks near the cache site.
We found Timaburn road a bit corrugated, but after that the road to the lake was in good condition.

My second FTF on a cache at Lake Onslow in two months! Was here in January for the cache overlooking the dam. Road is cut-up in places compared to then. Looks like there has been a lot of rain here recently. This was confirmed by a couple in a Landcruiser who I flagged down to ask about the road out to Paerau. They reckoned there was a ford that would drown my bike so I had to double-back to Millers Flat. Absolutely deserted area but there was a fisherman right near the cache site! Fortunately he couldn't see what I was doing. Then a guy with a kayak on his roof-rack arrived as well! Fun adventure.
