This site popped up on our GPS so gathered the info not realising that the site had been taken out. Called in at calculated GZ on way out and found the likely spot but cupboard empty.
Just about needed crampons and ice axes to get to the monument.... when we got to GZ we found a likely looking spot but no cache......
A two day expedition. Great time at the Aoraki alpine lodge and visiting the Sir Ed centre.
Found the first stage during our walk up the hooker valley where there were clear views of Mt Cook today. Very sobering to see the monument and all those plaques. Final location was just wonderful, we wouldn't have stopped if it weren't for the cache.
Spent a long time reading all the memorials to those who went into the mountains and did not come back - very poignant. Glad to find the cache easily on the way out of Mt Cook as we would not have returned if the coordinates had been wrong. Had to be sneeky as a couple of camper vans were parked nearby and just after we replaced the cache a couple went over and stood / sat right on the hiding place - a close shave. Took finger monster and Lizard TB and left rugby card. TFTC.
Needed a fair bit of stealth and some diversionary tactics by other members of the party to grab this one. Interesting that others saw us mucking about taking photos from the cache site and decided to come to the spot to take their photos too. Had the cache safely away by the time they got there though.
