Time to take this one offline. With the new rifle range signs, people will feel unsafe, even though it's quite ok

This has been on my radar for a long time but the rifle range signs have been putting me off. Today I decided to "bite the bullet" (sorry - couldn't help myself) and head off at the crack of dawn, well before any shooting is scheduled to take place. Parked in Manor Rd Hornsby and walked down past the fish ponds. They are doing some maintenance work between here and Quarry Rd fire trail so it looks quite messy compared to last time I was here. I'm sure it will look fantastic when they are finished. Finally made it to the fire trail and encountered a few other joggers enjoying the morning air. Followed the trail to GZ for last 30m where it took me a little longer than expected to find the cache. But all turned out well. SL and headed back for the return journey. Made a slight detour to check out #8 The Rock Hopper which I had found in December. There is much more growth than I remember back then. Back down past the ponds and then up, up, up to the car. Early finish today at work, so arrived at 3:30pm. Plans are for this hide and "Rock Hopper"as well, now, for a long walk, well exercise, anyway.
Parked at the end of Quarry Rd and followed the generous fire trail in width to GZ. The wildflowers are out already, and they look amazing. Both sides of the trail are in abundance of flowers.
Walked past the keep out sign, all good, followed the goat trail from 27m to GZ off the fire trail. Into a small clearing for a quick find. Sat down and did the cache name, returned to the trail, thanks strike a light

#1564 (3 of 3 today)

I was originally intending to come up this way today for a day of plundering bush caches - hopefully 10 or more...
Then I get a phone call and end up sitting behind a computer for 6 hours.
So finally escaped at 4pm and headed this way to see what I could grab before heading south for a meeting.
Three finds (or was that 2½) and one DNF.
* * * END OF CUT AND PASTE SECTION * * *
My main target for the day. Arrived at the trailhead, just behind another car that had recently arrived. Occupant got out and started up the trail. Another car pulled up behind me. Two muggles get out and start up the trail.
Can't look for the cache at the trailhead as yet another car has muggle occupants who don't appear to be going anywhere. Hopefully on the way back.

Pleasant walk to GZ on a well maintained trail - passing the muggle pair but not catching the single. Found a track off the main trail leading to GZ and had a quick find with good coordinates.

Completed signing duties and replaced.

On the way back passed another two walking muggles and one cycling. It's Pitt Street here today!
A three kilometre round trip. Just what I needed.

Morning looked relatively mild and overcast so grabbed the MTB out for a ride. Headed off and immediately the clouds disappeared so made a stop to put on some sunscreen before continuing down to the start line on the Hornsby Side. Quarry Track sweeps down from the end of Stewart next to the rifle range then drops steeply down the valley to the steel Bridge. On MTB this was awesome. By the third or fourth jump had my attack position better placed with more weight over the rear wheels to stop the forward rotation that had me landing dangerously on the front end. At the bottom crossed the bridge which was showing signs of wear from the Market Garden battles, and then the long slog up. Rifle range not operating so safely through that bit. Nearing GZ noted the narrow cache trail and dismounted. A quick find, cache in great condition, signed the log and replaced then continued on to the Dural Berowra Regional Park cache at the Dural end, the track fairly undulating from here on.

Thanks for placing, recommend the MTB approach but be extra careful on the descents!

As per my found it log.

Look, there's nothing wrong with the cache itself, the container is in good nick and the hiding spot is mostly OK, but I think just to be on the safe side it should get moved about 50m-100m to the south to be on the "safe" side of the shooting range sign. Still plenty of good rocky hiding spots there.

15/10/14. 10:28 AM. Cache #1937. Streak day #115. I only wanted to get one cache this morning as it was raining, and I considered this as it was one of the few (7) unfound traditionals still sitting within my home 10km, and the only one of these highlighted as "beginner". OK, sure the 3km return walk meant that it was not going to be a simple park and grab, but seeing as that walk was going to be via a nice, wide fire trail and not a narrow, wet-branch-filled animal track, it seemed fine. So, I drove to the end of Quarry Rd, got out the big golf umbrella and went for a stroll.

The fire trail was as easy going as I'd expected and the umbrella did its job nicely. There was a sign at the beginning of the track warning walkers not to enter the shooting range area, and there was another sign at the edge of that zone, about 70m from GZ. With a little trepidation, despite it being wet and not hearing gunfire, I went past that sign and soon had to bush bash. Here, the umbrella got in the way, so I had to unfold it and get a little bit wet before I got to the clear area around GZ.

It didn't take me too long to get the cache, and the umbrella gave me good cover to sign it and return it. Replaced all the camo and then headed for home. TFTC }:)

This certainly was an easy and peaceful walk, although GZ appears to be just inside the exclusion zone around the rifle range. There were new warning signs on the track today banning entry, but no rifle shots could be heard. At GZ we just needed a short look around before the find, and thought I had a nice place to log before the ants found me. We took the TB to use with another cache. Thanks for a good hide, we really enjoyed the short walk although there were not as many wildflowers as expected. This is our favourite type of cache, out in the bush on a sunny day.

Not many finds for this cache this year.
An early finish to comp tennis in Quarry Road today meant there was time to do this walk. And what a lovely walk it is - highly recommended, especially in spring as there are plenty of native wildflowers out which is really inspiring to plant more natives in our garden (we already have a lot but I'd like more!)
Spotted a sort of trail off the main track when the GPS indicated GZ wasn't too far away but it stopped after about 10m so then it was a bit of a bush scramble until a likely hide was spied.
Everything's dry and in good condition.

Geocache: # 1,068.
Found on: Monday, 30th December 2013 at 4:24 PM.
Conditions: sunny.
Current streak: # 152 days.
Today's finds: 3 of 13.
Caching buddies: Goughy2012 & morry9.

I headed out with Goughy2012 and morry9 in the afternoon to tackle a couple more Old School caches, this time up the northern end of Sydney, and to hopefully pick up a few others around the area. We parked the car at the end of Quarry Road and were able to successfully find #8 The Rock Hopper. On the way back, Goughy2012 and morry9 wanted to head back to the car to escape the hot summer sun but I was keen to make a slight detour to attempt this one, which was nearby. We split up at The Pogson Trig station marker where the tracks branch off and I started my jog along the fire trail. Once at Ground Zero, it was a quick find and I soon had the Cache In Hand. I signed the log before returning the cache and its cammo to the original hiding spot. Signed Log, Took Nothing Left Nothing. From there, I jogged back to the car and met up with Goughy2012 and morry9 who had just finished the Dural Berowra Regional Park cache at the gate (so it was now my turn while they watched on). Thanks For The Cache strike-a-light.

Another great bushland cache where I did indeed test a while longer. Love these caches where I can sit and read the entire logbook without being disturbed. I added my own story and replaced the cache before heading back along the fire trail in the heat of the day. The cicadas were deafening but this added to the peacefulness as there were no other sounds to be heard. Thoroughly enjoyable!

11-Aug-13
Day 11 of 31 for August streak and we'd already found our cache for the day but wanted to do some bushwalking so headed up this way. Bush caches are the best - so many hidey holes and great fun finding them. We realised as soon as the cache was opened that the TB's I was hoping to drop were still in the car! TFTC and the great walk.

Reperio at 1140.

After heading down the trail to grab '#8 The Rock Hopper', this one wasn't too far away, so once I had walked back up to the main trail, I headed off to find it. The walk in was nice and gentle, and it wasn't long before the cache was in hand.

The spot on co-ordinates meant an easy, pleasant stop and rest after the find.

Then it was off down the fire trail.

Had a very pleasant wander down the fire trail to this one. It was nice to not have a big bush bash at the end to get to GZ. Spotted the corner of the container out of the corner of my eye. Ducked down to sign the log as a family passed by on the nearby fire trail. TFTC x

Geoson and I had a great walk along the fire trail from Quarry Road to find this one. It's very nice country, quite a few walkers and mountain bikers were out enjoying the pleasant weather today. This cache does not seem to be visited very often but it and its contents are in excellent condition. SL, took TB, TFTC.

First outing for GC'ing and found this one, started a hike in Galston Gorge (With Stig) and headed back to hornsby.
Something you'd never come across if you didnt know to walk off the track and find it.
Location was spot on.
Wrote in the log, had a look at what goodies are to be found and left them.
Added a few band-aids from my first aid kit after getting a few scratches getting in there. FTF for this year too by the logs!

A crisp early morning walk to drop off a special TB. The track was lovely today with patches of beautiful fluffy white blossoms along the way that smelled of fresh honey. I stuck my nose in quite a few to enjoy the scent but had to be careful to check for other visitors first! There were a few goanna tracks in the sand along the way and plenty of birds calling and singing everywhere.

Found the cache nice and dry in it's shelter with lots of interesting swaps. This is what caches used to look like only a few years ago, fun to inspect all the "treasures" and with the odd TB resting for it's next journey.

Dropped off Air and the Save The Dolphins coin and picked up the London TB

Cache Hunt 526; GAFF1; Weather, Sunny; Helpers, Alfygirl, Geogirls 10,10,12; Cache condition, Great; Find of the day, 1st; STATUS; Found; GPS at GZ - 0m

I couldn't believe it. Alfrgirl wanted to rack up some steps on her Global corporate stepper challenege and asked for a bushwalk to any caches close by. A quick check and this one looked like a good one.

First ever bush walk with the whole family, so we parked at the fire trail start and headed in. A Qqick stop at a Trig and then on we continued along the easy walking trail. We then veered in some metres and I placed the GPS down and got alfygirl to find the cache. She did, and carefully got out her first ever Geocache Big Grin Hooked?? Hopefully. GPS was spot on too at 0 metres!

Girls then had a field day sorting though the swaps and checking everything out. I SL. Dropped a TB and took a TB. Kids swapped some items and then we packed up and I replaced cache. Walked back out. Pleasent day, easy walk and tons of fun going with the whole team, loved it. TFTC.

Have been meening to head out here for quite some time and tackle this knowing that Strike-a-light can be relied on for a good cache in usually a picturesque location.

Lovely walk along the fire trail and then an easy side trip for those last few metres to GZ. Cache in good condition after all the rain, dry as a bone.

Thanks SaL, a good location and easy find.

Third, and final, cache of the day =) Had to convince the others that it was worth doing 'one last cache' (...which sometimes turns into another 2 or 3 lol). Thankfully it didn't take us long to walk from the trig point to just nearby GZ, then a short bush-bash through some scrub to get to the rocky area in which the cache is hidden. Grabbed the two TBs and the memory card (will look at the pictures when I find my multi-card reader). Left a linux-CD TB and a polished, sparkly stone. TFTC! ^_^

Pretty surprised this cache hasn't been found since April 2010 because it's an easy walk along a well kept fire trail and not hard to locate. But I suppose it does look remote on a map. I walked from where I parked to the cache in less than 15 minutes (at a good clip, working up a sweat), but it's probably a leisurely 25 minute stroll.

Cache is in perfect order. I took the two TBs. Didn't want them to spend another nine months 'resting-a-while longer'. TFTC.

I had to listen to Smurfyguy whinge to me the whole way in about how far we had to walk from Quarry Rd to get to this cache!!! And.... it's really not that far!! Big Grin

It was like Pitt St today. We met 3 separate joggers that passed us both ways, 2 blokes on mountain bikes scrambling up the hills and a couple out strolling along the fire trail. Still, when we reached GZ, we had the whole place to ourselves. Cache was found quickly. What a lovely spot out in the bush this was!! Took a Beijing Olympics figure. Left Ronald McDonald figure, mini-frisbee and gold pirate coin. Thanks Strike-a-light for bringing us to this beautiful location.

Cache #3 today, came up the hill from "#8 The Rock Hopper", I guess it would be much easier to drive there, but probably not as rewarding. Located GZ with no trouble and got to the cache very quickly. Top spot.

A nice walk through the bush on a Sunday morning - a good 1.4 km from the end of Quarry Rd. Found fairly easily and only had the one tick on me. Here to grab some TBs to put some kms on them with our trip to North America very soon. Took Ixam TB and Kangaroos to Austria GC and also took GIO watch which we left a game, a dinosaur and a magnetic fluffy chicken for. Also dipped Dudley the TB in here and took a photo of him in the Australian bush. Good to clear this one from the radar of local caches. Thanks!

Nice easy find at GZ. Luckily I saw that I had put the coordinates into my GPS incorrectly before we were taken too far off course (which I actually realised right where the site met with the path). Signed and placed a geocoin in the container, took nothing. The trip back was eventful as well with me almost standing on what looked like a tiger snake, ah well it was still a nice day. TFTC!

I rode here this morning with my Geoboy after a big breakfast, A pleasant easy ride had us at GZ in no time. A very crafty place for a cache! Hidden in the out of bounds of NP area for the stray firing of the rifle range across the valley.
We could hear them blasting away at targets whilst the log book was being signed. Nice work!
No ammo came our way this morning though!
Left a coin and TB no swaps Thanks for bringing us here, it's been many years since I've been here after living at Round Corner for the first 20 odd years or so of my life. Nice to come back and reminisce.
Seems more people have been here than have logged finds too. Someone signed the book on the 11th but forgot to put their cacher name leaving only the date and their comments. Me thinks it's Tronador CheersBig GrinBig Grin

Carrying on from a nearby cache we followed the fire trail northwards as the day wended towards it's end. Being a ridge top fire trail it was a quick walk and we were soon signing the log on this one accompanied by the crack and bang of distant gunfire. No swaps however we picked up the DocPT coin which it seems had only been dropped off the same day. A pleasant and easy stroll is this.

Parked at the end of Quarry Road and mounted the trusty iron steed (pushbike).
GZ was an enjoyable and easy ride down the firetrail with light drizzle falling. I past a couple of muggles out for their morning constitution and was amused that they didn't hear my coming and did a toyota jump when I said "good morning, ...!".
The bush in this area is pristine with only a few minor weeds around the tracks.
The serenity of the area was only broken by the occasional rounds of rifle fire from the nearby range... sounded like 22's
After leaving my transportation just off the fire frail, GZ was a short walk through the bush (I tried hard not to disturb the vegetation!)
I spied a small brown snake wriggling away at GZ and quickly found the cache in a traditional location.
Cache was extremely well stocked!
Took 2 TBs and Geo CD to pass on, Left 1 TB.

By chance I had my bike in for a service today and collected it at lunch time and knew that this one was on the radar.

As a young boy I used to live on Quarry Road, just down from the school. As a slightly older boy and before my folks shipped me off to boarding school, the local mates and I would venture into the park land to ride our bikes and have the odd night out camping.

It is really a great place to wander around and walk through. The fire trail is really well maintained too.

I arrived at the culdesac and blasted along the trail on my trusty pushy. Not long I was at the old trig station, a place we would hang out and where I first got a taste and flavour for my future career. Sadly, with the vegetation over growing, the lines of sight to this crest are no more and the trig station has been decomissioned.

There is minimal impact on the local vegetation in doing this cache, well apart from the last 30m. But even then, 15m is knee high grasses and trees before you come out to a reasonable clearing and the GZ.

Quick easy find as described and a good size cache too.

No swaps today, but I have noted the GC and TB tracking numbers for discovery.

TFTC, it was great coming back here.
