As the summer months come to an end, and with daylight savings ending for us real soon, it's time for an extended weekend trip to Rotorua (from Wellington). Lots of activities are on the agenda, and geocaching is one of them. I had several specific caches marked to find on this trip, some to meet specific requirements, some were such fun puzzle solves that I just had to come and sign the log, and are some just because. This cache is one of them.

GPS didn't want to settle, but hint made sense. Cache log book is very wet.

Thanks to nzkeko for placing this cache here.

traditional cache small 2.0/3.0

Find #4,100

*Found with [Geooh GO](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobiltal.geoohGO)*

27-Nov-21
GPS had us going round & round. Then looked on the other side & first tree i looked at. Tftc

27-Nov-21
Took longer to find than it should have as GPS was jumping all over the place. Log was wet.

15-Nov-21
Stopped by while out botanising with Dad again, but actually found cache by accident when I went to pick up some trackside rubbish … a dirty wet plastic bag half covered in leaves, but lo and behold it had something weighty inside. With some trepidation I pulled the handles of the bag wide apart and peered in … and saw a very definite cache (whew!). Unfortunately everything was wet or damp, so Dad dried out the cache and treasures while I wrote in the damp log book. I re-wrapped the cache back in the plastic bag and settled it back into it’s obvious proper home, ready for the next cacher.
TFTC - it turned out to be the first of seven finds today, and the first of several very wet caches.

Made this way harder than I needed too, if only I had looked on that side of the tree first, I would have spotted the cache straight away Big Grin

But no I had to walk around, looking here and there, before I went back to the original tree, and there the cache was!

So happy to find, and be signing the log. Thanks for the history and the hide. Amazed at how cold it was under the tree canopy, my breath was breathing fire Wink

What great cache...what made it so great you may ask...we met a local who was doing his worship to the forest ..he explained about the tree and the tradition of wishing ...also I like the story about the hollow in the tree...the cache was found a short walk up the track ...signed and returned as found thanks NZkeko for placing this cache and enticing me to this wonderful spot

26-Jul-18
This is a beautiful piece of Bush. Initially struggled through lots of supplejack before returning to the track and using geosense. An unusual muggle was waiting for us at entrance to track. He had a small truck decked out with all sorts - not sure if he was living there or just self appointed guardian. Thanks for bringing us here nzkeko

31-May-18
I've been saving this one so I could get it after work some time and today was the day. We parked at the parking waypoint and did the short walk to GZ. Hunted around for a few minutes and 'The Mr' came up with the cache. This is a beautiful area which I have walked before but finding a cache gave me a good reason to return. TFTC

24-Mar-18
Easy find, well hidden

19-Mar-18
What an interesting name for a cache. We had stopped near here as our friends had been telling us about Hongi's track. Was there a cache nearby was their question and we were happy to say yes as it was so close. The GPS had us overrunning the cache but a short backtrack to a likely spot gave a quick find.
Thanks.

14-Dec-17
Celebrating freedom by taking a day's caching tour of the north-eastern lakes and heading for Kawerau. For this one, I was initially seduced by a larger, more impressive cuzzie but soon returned to the right one where there seemed to be a suspicious pile of sticks. Took TB. Thanks for the cache and an interesting walk. TFTC.

Cache number 3396 and day 84 of my current streak. I have driven past this spot a number of times and thought I that I should stop. Today this cache gave me the opportunity. After a short walk to GZ the cache was quickly located. As I was sitting there signing I got muggled by a North Island robin. They are the most trusting of birds. Thank you for the placement.

[green] Home for Christmas. Well, sort of. Home is actually Palmerston North, the rest of the family are in Rotorua, and now I am off to Opotiki with mum to catch up with the rest of the family who left for the beach a few days ago. I haven't swum in the ocean for years!! So mum and I are are caching our way to the beach.
kay - I didn't expect this. mum and I get to the pull in area. I go looking for the cache while mum decides to stay in the car - she doesn't trust the guys lucking there. She always sees the negative side, they looked fine to me. I find the cache after a bit of trouble - under trees is always difficult. Found two epiphytes lying on the ground. Probably weighed 20 kg each - which is why you don't put a tent up under a tree that has epiphytes in it! When I get back to the car mum and the suspicious guys are talking together on the other side of the road beside a crash vehicle. Turns out they were waiting for the crash vehicle to get one of their cars out of the bushes, where it decided to go after they took the corner too fast. No one was hurt, but the car won't drive any more. We stayed till they were pretty much sorted. I helped by slowing down the traffic at the corner. See the photos!

Thanks for the cache. Smile

Mrs Tparty is on fire today picking up the tricky ones. GPS brought us in to GZ no problems, but then we needed to systematically search the likely spots. Took a couple of minutes before success was had. Thought about the legend, and the hints provided - and there it was. We were intrigued by the number of toots we got as we read the plaques around the matai tree. No tooting was heard while we were out of sight in the bush. Of course this is a significant historic site, but they can't all be geocachers egging us on, so there must be a local custom we are not aware of. Any thoughts? TFTC
