After trailing a few complicated maths theories, we ended up reverse engineering the process to obtain the coordinates. After a bit of a wander and explore at GZ, we soon had the container, thanks in part to a recent bit of experience with this style of hide.It was good to explore places like this that we would otherwise probably never get to.Thanks for the cache!

This was a lovely country drive, a slight wrong turn gave us more country drive than planned but no big deal. The caretakers were setting up for the community Christmas do this afternoon and were happy to have a chat about the history and surrounds for a few minutes. Is a peaceful part of the world and well maintained . Fav point given . Tftc

Amazing place to come and we chatted with the neighbour about the history of the place. Thanks for sharing this location.TFTC

Let me start by saying I thought I calculated this correctly, and tried it a few times but it kept putting me in the middle of nowhere. Earth shift perhaps? haha. In my opinion .005 should be added to the East coords. Thankfully after spending over an hour chatting with caretaker Carol and viewing the many contents inside the school building she was able to help me out.

Here's a few facts about the place in case anyone wants to know and doesn't want to knock on Carol's door at the old school house next door and ask to take a look inside and hear the stories from her.

The Australia garden, lamp posts, pillar with military horseman were all added as part of the Tullymorgan war memorial after the school was closed. The horseman used to be on a pole and a concrete pillar was added later. A few years back the pillar and garden surrounds were painted white. The light posts were reclaimed from the river at Maclean. They have "Municipality of Maclean" and "Grafton Municipality" forged into them. Each post represents a war. Originally the lamps ran on oil once erected here, as they had been in the past. They were replaced with low watt light bulbs eventually and are still seen lit up every night in remembrance of those fallen at war.

The old engine questioned in this cache description was the first oil powered engine in the whole region and was originally used at the Harwood Sugar Mill.

The whistle, not birdhouse, near the school house fence was from a paddle steamer that used to travel on the Clarence River. When it was no longer used on the steamer, it was taken to the Harwood Sugar Mill where it was used as the knock off whistle. Having worked in a sugar mill, I'd say it would have to be quite loud for such a use. In it's present location it was pressurised, the tap turned, and the whistle sounded only once. That one time the cows across the road totally freaked out and ran wild, and all the neighbours for quite some distance could here it, hence it only being sounded that one time.

The reserve is open for use for picnics and play any day of the week. You can even plug a kettle in at the shed out back and use the BBQs (if theres no fire ban). I'm not sure how you would do it, but if you phone ahead you could ask Carol if she will be around and able to open the school for you to look inside. If you turn up Anzac morning you'll blend into a large crowd and get a bacon and egg roll for a gold coin donation. The school is open every Anzac Day as it is part of the war memorial. Carol has quite a lot of history she's collected in there.

Inside the school...
You'll find the local telephone exchange machine and a photo of the woman who ran it.
There's a tonne of local history stories collected from Trove and the like in there.
Whilst there is a bunch of general historic stuff that has been collected in there, the medicine balls and net frame were actually found in the PE storage at the school...
which closed in 1971 due to a large family leaving the area reducing the enrolled students to 6.
And if you have Carol showing you around, she may open the little storage cabinet in the corner of the room and show you the old ink bottles that were found in there, one with ink in it still.
And all the flags hanging in the cloak room and main school room were used at the school.
I'm sure I've missed some very cool info, but you can go have a look and see for yourself.

Pics attached.
Fave point added for bringing me to a fascinating location. I would have given a fave point just for the garden shape and why the name is as it is. But asking a couple of questions can open up much more interesting things here.

What an amazing place - took a bit of getting to through the hills etc. read some other logs in order to locate as my coordinates took me all over. Eventually found without too much feeling around in places - TFTC took path tag

All good here, popped a pathtag out there

Took a little bit of looking around, checking the calculations, and putting my hand in dark places. Got it eventually.

A basic puzzle solved a long time ago and today it was a wet and wood drive to the pretty spot for a find.

TFTC.

We took a long detour from Lawrence on a horrendous road for a brand new rental car (oops) to this beautiful location. I must have messed up a number because I had gz in the middle of the grass around the back. We widened our search dramatically but eventually gave up. Disappointed with the DNF but happy we visited this history place. Love the front garden shape!

11-May-21
Taking the long way home to grab this one. Solved while at work the other day what an awesome little school. Got back to the car to find a blue wren that had a serious issue with his reflection almost reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock. TFTC

Took a run out here today. All is in good order.

Cache found, but don't know anything about mystery caches

I love these rare little places from yesteryear. Even better when you can have a look around at your own leisure.

I was in Maclean for work and finished my jobs with some time to spare so I though I'd venture out this way to find this cache. I'd done the maths and solved the puzzle - back in 2010, just hadn't got around to making the find.

Pulled over at GZ and had a poke around - the garden in the shape of Australia is really awesome. Even Tasmania is represented! Once I'd checked out the area I made my way to where the GPS was pointing, and I got very lucky and pulled out a cache on my first go.

Had a look at the logbook, then added my name to it. A great place for a cache, and I like that it was a puzzle. Thanks Magpyre!

When I first came upon this puzzle I got it solved in no time, and saved the coordinates for a later date.. I've long forgotten just how far back that was, but as I scanned the map recently I again noticed the listing and determined to get to GZ soon. After all, it looks like it hasn't been visited in over a year so I thought it might be lonely.

After all the fires over summer KTB and I were keen to spread some cash around some affected areas so hit the highway for a mini road trip. We drove slowly along much of the dirt track section through the forest from the north and it was really fascinating seeing how quickly the fire-adapted species have been recovering and sprouting. Another noteworthy moment on the way was when we passed a farm and there was a pig at the end of the driveway VERY MUCH behaving like a dog waiting for owner to come home.. haha you should've seen his cute wee tail wiggling in excitement, but no, sorry, you'll have to wait a bit longer Big Grin

Finally arriving at our destination we decamped from the vehicle and very quickly managed to track down the cache. I'm pleased to report the cache is in fine condition, and now has our trailnames contained within. My thanks go to Magpyre for setting this fun little puzzle and getting me to visit an interesting spot in a beautiful area. Cheers!

With a few presolved puzzles to pick up we left the coast and headed inland towards Lismore, Casino then down to Grafton.
We enjoyed the drive here just as much as this interesting site. Love the Australian garden, they even remembered Tasmania

Thanks Magpyre for the puzzle placement.

Finally found it after hours trying to find it and solve the puzzle, there hasn't been much recent activity in the log book so we were happy to find such a difficult cache, TFTC

06-Dec-16
DiamonJs told me this was solved but on her last visit she didn't have the solved coords or maybe it wasn't visible becuase she said she was sure she looked there, so glad to find it today. TFTC

06-Dec-16
YAYYY Finally!!! I solved this puzzle when I first moved a couple of hours away and it was one of the only puzzles I had not solved, then I quickly forgot about it. Today was D day must get it day, walked straight to the hide. Nice puzzle nice hide. TFTC fav point from me.

Our second visit and we were so pleased to be able to find and sign the log today. Such a beautiful setting. Thanks Magpyre.

I learnt enough at school a long time ago to get the numbers, after a good guess at what was happening. When we left for home, I thought this area would be too far off-track, but we had spare time this morning so detoured to a place we would never have otherwise visited. What a wonderful little outdoor museum. I particularly like the huge single-pot diesel, but it's all worth a look.
Thanks Magpyre.

04-Jan-16
Why are the light posts there all nicely in a row?
It's a well-maintained old school and grounds, complete with diesel engine as you do...
Thanks for bringing us to a lovely piece of history, cache found without too many spiders disturbed.

I have a BIG milestone coming up and am needing to get the numbers just right for the correct week-end. Cool
So a big day out caching is needed. Surprised I basically have gone from Maclean to Grafton to Casino to Lismore today for about 50 caches. Big Grin
I found the first cache just before 6am and made the last find for the day just before 5pm. Smile
After a late breakfast in Grafton it is time to head north. Smile
Heading to Casino, I made a big detour to find this one as I had solved it. Smile
A very well maintained place here. I had to look several times before spotting the cache. Razz
Thanks for all of the caches today.

Found at 9:38 AM GAFF1.
We liked the puzzle - one that we could work out by quick reasoning [^]. We packed up from Lawrence and drove around with the van on enjoying the scenery along the way and suddenly as we approached GZ we understood the name of the cache. A very nicely maintained school, but what happens when it is a school day? Can you still just walk in?
So many different symbols which we wish we understood what they all meant.
Thanks Magpyre.
Feedback: Shouldn't the hint say "Final Location" rather than "Puzzle"?

26-Jun-14
Found It [^] - hmmm memories went to school nearly identical to this even down to the lunch shed - Solved this at home way back and just needed a chance to get here, Thanks FTC Big Grin

26-Jun-14
Found it TFTC. Lovely little school. I remember going to one just like it.

28-Dec-13
We finally got a chance to come back to this location and the place looks exactly as it did last time we were here 4 years ago. The people who look after this school do an exceptional job.
We also had better luck this time after rechecking our co odds, we had a even bigger look this time and came up with the cache.
Great location and well worth the drive out to check out some local history.

Worked out the co-ordinates on the way. Found after quite a search because the first round mustn't have been thorough enough. A lovely well kept old school but MrG couldn't quite get why they designed the garden in that shape until he was told what it was ..really, didn't he learn anything at school! TFTC Magpyre.

30-Dec-12
While driving to this cache location I said to geohubby that I had a hint as to how to work out the co-ords. He said: I already have worked them out! Another advantage for me doing the driving. Wow! This place is terrific. We so enjoyed our visit and explored the very well kept grounds. Just lovely. This cache will certainly earn a favourite point from me for the pleasure we got from our visit here today. Thanks for the cache Magpyre and bringing us here. TN Left: pathtag SL

nothing like caching on a wet public holiday monday. shoes soggy and car dirty but we got this little beauty after some nifty arithmetic by mr bloopy. cheers!

After working out the correct maths a while ago we just needed a time to come and find this cache and today was it. Geodad loved this old school and how great it is with the entrance and statue. Found the cache after a small search.

Took a while to find after geohubby worked out the maths (clever). Lovely spot. TFTC

18-Jul-11
nice easy find.
geokids from Bessie's-Mob had completely disregarded the spot.
having done others in the area, i had a look and found it instantly.
TFTC Smile

18-Jul-11
Worked out the coordinates a couple of months ago and today was the day to retrieve the cache. Lovely old school area. They don't have them like this anymore. TFTC Magpyre and for giving us a lovely day out.

02-Nov-10
I was due to visiting the Maclean area and I had a look at the nearby puzzles. This one caught my eye - the poor thing had not been visited in nearly 7 months. Tried a few things to get an answer. Tried a bit of backward thinking and the answer came easily. With co-ords in hand, I got to GZ. My regular GPSr ended up in the drink yesterday - so I had to resort to my HTC phone. It truly was hopeless - but it ended up settling down and led me to the well hidden cache. TFTC Magpyre - a great little welcome diversion from the highway Smile

06-Apr-10
Found this one with help from Herbz & Grundies while on a drive thru the surrounding hinterland, beautiful place TFTC

05-Apr-10
Grabbed this one today with Geofriends, the Holminators and the Herbz. Was an easy one to solve as previously noted by the Herbz I was their phone a friend earlier this year. Co-ords were spot on, Thanks. Enjoyed a picnic lunch in the park before tackling some 4wding in the nearby forest. TNLN TFTC.

03-Apr-10
Had the help of a maths teacher (grundies) for this one! Then it was nice and easy to find the cache itself. TFTC Smile

04-Mar-10
After a selection of comments on the accuracy of the co-ordinates I took a maintenance visit to check again. With a different GPS that has an accuracy of 2 metres at this location I reset the puzzle. I hope you all have better luck.

07-Jan-10
A bit of effort was required to find this one....firstly we had to "phone a geofriend" the Grundies, who happens to be a maths teacher (handy for us) as despite our best efforts and those of two year 12 students, we couldn't crack the puzzle. However Mr Grundies came up trumps in 10 minutes flat (kudos to Grundies).
So armed with the coords off we set from Yamba. GZ is a lovely and interesting location, lots of birds and wildlife abounds and not a muggle to be seen. We searched for a good half an hour with no results so decided to stop for a picnic and a beer. After that we widened our seach a bit and Mrs Herbz found it almost immediately about 9m away from GZ. A cool cache and lovely location. Well recommended. TFTC.

01-Jan-10
Finally found it with help from Griffo( a big thank you). We had looked at that spot lots of times but obviously not well enough TFTC. Took coin left Panda.

31-Dec-09
I already had the puzzle solved, so went for a drive up to look for it. Was looking around the wrong building at first but eventually found it.

Thanks,
Trillian

25-Sep-09
We went back as we are sure the co-ords we worked out are correct but after 2 hrs still no luck. How nearby is nearby?

16-Sep-09
We spent a long time looking for this but no luck .After going home and thinking some more we think we have got it.Will try again soon. The engine at the site was the first engine at the Ashby saw mill. The steam whistle was originally off one of the cane barges that transported cane from the Tweed river and was the whistle that was at the Harwood sugar mill for a lot of years.

28-Jul-09
Well, perserverance paid off in the end. I searched for this for an hour before coming up trumps. Had just about given up and decided to have one last look. Lo and behold there it was. Even got a Ftf at last today. Tftc

27-Jun-09
We spent about 30 mins or so looking for this with no luck. We decided we must do advanced maths at work, because we were no good at basic maths!! Big Grin We tried many different combination's of calculations while the geokids just looked in the usual places.
In the end we decided it was time to move on.
Great spot in the middle of nowhere. Looks like it gets used regularly and has regular upkeep.

Thanks for bring us here Magpyre. We'll be back.

While looking back at FTF's yet to be found we came across this one.

With the co ords now worked out (we think) all that is left to do is find the cache however it is over 600km away so will have to wait for our trip north later in the year.

Thanks for the puzzle and looking forward to finding the cache (only hope the FTF lasts that long.
