With Gap (of Fap and Gap)...
We have been planning for Queen's Birthday weekend for some time - routes and caches were identified and mapped, and Gap solved a whole lot of puzzles in readiness for this adventure. We scoured many online logs and took note of the condition of the caches and their logbooks. We determined to replace any containers and logbooks where there was a dire need - This is not usually our habit and is quite time consuming; but we are enthusiastic cachers and believe in doing our bit for the wider caching community...
It rained heavily overnight, and we expected more of the same over the weekend. As if on cue, the first day of winter brought biting cold wind and driving rain. Today had the potential to be quite miserable, but we had a caching mission to pursue. As the day wore on, we rearranged our clothing layers to conserve body heat... We started out on the 52 on 52 trail with enthusiasm. We've wanted to do this series for ages... Rain fell heavily without any sign of let up. We tried to search in short bursts, but we weren't getting anywhere. We decided to take shelter in the cafe across the road and had a good chat with the proprietor. As it didn't look like the rain was going to clear, we decided to move on. Maybe next time...

Too many muggles today with a hunting comp on to spend long looking for this one.
#5825. A plan was hatched several weeks ago to do a mid-winter caching raid on deepest darkest skindoland, partly to build up finds on skindo caches for a challenge and also to get the new souvenirs launched a few days ago. So Infoferret, Ethness and I drove over on Friday night and stayed at E's family home in Greytown. Then after stocking up on food and fuel we were off north heading to Pongaroa and Dannevirke via 50+ cache stops. Finally reached Pongaroa late in the day. I tried for this one back in Dec. There was a garden present and wooden railing and rocks everywhere. I couldn't spot the cache. Today the site was very different with much fewer hiding options. Found within a minute. Signed the logbook and replaced the cache as found. Thanks for hiding the cache here MalcolmB. Remarkable that a world renowned scientist and Nobel Laureate could start life in such humble surroundings.
Found today while out with PJMacNZ, Haydn.seek, Etherlord Clan and TwigNZ. Quick easy find. Log signed as "Team PHETT" (PJMacNZ, Haydn.seek, Etherlord, TwigNZ, and myself)
Thanks For The Cache
Thanks For The Cache
Today my son (ThatWeirdGuy04) and I were lucky enough to be invited to tag along with PJMacNZ, Haydn.Seek and Etherlord Clan on a day trip around the Wairarapa.
We knew it was going to be a long day, but we were hopeful that we would get to find quite a few caches along the way, especially of the Mystery variety which we decided to concentrate mainly on getting.
The weather was kind to us, meaning we were able to spend time out of the car finding the caches and making running repairs to quite a few of them, mainly due to waterlogged log sheets and damaged plastic bags. Anyone finding these caches next in a good condition have EC and HS to thank for providing the requisite items.
My apologies for the generic log entry here, but the volume of caches found today makes it the best way to get everything done. With a small few exceptions, most of the caches were a relatively straightforward find, and in every case the logsheet was signed as Team PHETT for all 5 of us before the cache was replaced exactly where found.
Thank you for placing this cache, and giving us the excuse to have a grand day out.

Cache number 7 of 56 (find number 5 of 50 for me) on a road trip from Palmerston North to Masterton (via Pongaroa) with some like-minded individuals collectively know as Geocachers!
We drove up the Pahiatua Track and ascended into the clouds, and then it was clear for the rest of the trip until we returned back over the Track.
Quick easy find.
Thanks

Enjoyed a stop and a cup of coffee in this wee village...I liked it. Wonder about this cache as it will be easily disturbed by someone! Maybe even the lawn mowing man....better among one of the notable structures in the park, might need to adapt a container for it perhaps....co-ords were spot on for our gps, thanks for placing a cache here.
I replaced this cache with a black pill bottle similiar size to film container with new log sheet as the other was soaking wet and Stunk!
We left fairly early and headed for skindo land - route 52 -or a part of it - making use of the remaining summer's drier conditions etc . We were amazed at the effects of the storm /flooding just over a week ago on the road and surrounding area and the many wash outs slips etc and we took some photos of this which i will log also. despite leaving early we still had only got as far as the waihi falls for lunch as we detoured a little and went for the lovely walk through the small reserve at mangatoro to see the giant trees there. we replaced several caches and log books that were very wet, with water proof paper.
thank you for this series of caches and the happy faces.

A quick find and a good cache.Container in good condition, wrote the log and re-concealed carefully.TFTC!
Nice draw to this memorial. TFTC. There has been some landscaping in the area with a garden removed. The container is damaged an no longer waterproof and the hint no longer makes sense.
The bush the cache was placed under has been removed. The cache is now under a reddish brown tile at the edge of the area where the bush once was. Enjoy visiting this most interested spot, not just for Maurice Wilkins but also for the other exhibits on show.
I stopped to look for this one. Spent about 5 minutes but could not find the original or replacement caches. Great to see the memorial in Pongaroa for one of the big names of modern science. Maurice Wilkins was born in this very town in 1916 and went on to be one of the researchers who discovered the structure of DNA, the code of life. He was the first to recognise that DNA was a helix structure using x-ray diffraction techniques. For this work he received a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1962.
We set out today on an expedition to the Wairarapa to focus mainly on collecting a section of the Route 52 series of caches. We left Palmerston North about 9am and headed to Dannevirke and on out to Weber for our first cache. Then it was caching along Route 52, lunch at Pongaroa, more caching to Afredton, Eketahuna and finally back to Palmy, getting there about 5.15pm. It was a fine day for geocaching, but very hot for such a lot of travelling - the air-con was a blessing.
The replacement cache was quickly located (thanks Paynepatrol). It is nothing like the original - a small, plastic tub now, and we couldn't see how the hint relates either. It could do with an owner check and update, please .
It was an interesting memorial to visit, and an interesting little park all together. Thanks for bringing us here MalcolmB.

We could not find think it has been removed by someone so have replaced a new one. Good luck
After a bit of a hunt the log was spotted and signed. Out on a numbers run with Infoferret so log signed either with my name or, for speed, 'IE' or'EI'. TFTC
On a caching foray with EthNZ into the Wairarapa today - No 39 in the race to 50 in a day, car, mind, body and phone battery willing - so getting there... TFTC. This one took a bit of searching round to locate, but we got there in the end by a combination of reading other logs and sheer bloody mindedness! Cache replaced where we found it. After we found this we decided to wander over to the hotel for a coffee and a hot lemon and ginger whilst we worked out the options for the next part of the trip.
Was muggled here by a group passing through that decided to stop for a picnic seconds after I arrived. Will save this for another day.
eventually found the log for this one in a bush without a container so after signing we put it in a pill bottle and put it back around where we found it. TFTC
This was a strange one. Managed to find the log in a plastic bag but no container of any sort. Put the log in a new container and placed back where we found it but not sure if it will be exactly in its original position or not. TFTC
Hubby offered up his day to drive me around these back country roads picking up ones that I had either missed or never made it too in our last trips, I dont have too many left out this way but we enjoyed the gravel roads and how quite it was, stopped in pongaroa for lunch, we didnt find the store so welcoming but the pub was awesome friendly staff and nice food with a great outdoor area, we hit a few spots of rain but mainly just wind, most caches were in great condition and replaced the ones I could, have a few more to clear up out here which means another enjoyable trip out this way sometime. Thanks to all the COs for the placements and the ones who replaced ones we were able to find. Sorry about the copy and paste logs we covered a fair few caches over some lovely views, we were thankful to be the ute as the holden would have been thick with dust today.
12.45: On the way from Waipukurau to Martinborough. The tranquil village of Pongaroa is resting in the midday sun. So almost no one around and we could look for this cache without any haste. In constract to other visitors the clue was very helpful and turned it into a fast find.
Weather: sun, cloudless sky, 20°C;
Wheelchair: no problem at all;
State: all good.
Thank you for showing us Pongaroa!

As others have said I didn't get the hint and it took a few looks before having the a-ha moment. TFTC.
Banian and I found this cache on our autumn northern roadtrip- where we did a circuit of the north island from Wellington right up to Raglan, then across to Napier through Taupo, before heading home, finding masses of caches and discovering a plethora of unique and interesting locations.
Lid warped, cache dry though. Would've missed this place but stopped as Banian has connections to the town. TFTC

Found with Redants on our April Holidays Road Trip to Raglan and back. Last leg of the journey, back to Wellington via HW52. Stopped for a late lunch and a cache, very quiet in town.

Cache no.38 for the day. T f T c MalcolmB.
Logged as team SHATner - (SpudNZ, Hunterhillson, AtomsNZ, Tommygun9) Spent the day caching out in and around the Mighty Manawatu, the Wild Wairapapa and the Bay of Hawkes, in the hope of clocking up +100 caches. As well as seeing some of the best scenic views rural NZ has to offer, we also came across a few stray sheep, a couple of rabbits, Farmer Joe, the Ram gang, some shifty goats, Farmer Dave, a pie, a cop, Farmer Ned and Farmer Ted, diggers, mud, rain, sun, fog, Farmer Jane and her trusty farm dog.. And even a few caches!

In the wee hours of 20 May 15, Tommygun9, Atomsnz, Hunterhillson and myself formed an elite squad for a daring raid into Skindo land. Our codename; Team SHAT-ner.
We would be operating deep behind enemy lines, often out of contact range from Hotel Quebec, limited supplies and no chance of rescue, should we need one. We were horrendously out numbered. I’ve heard rumours that it was close to 300 to one.
Our mission; covertly kill off as many insurgents as we could and return home alive. We had all set personal goals for the mission; mine was to crack the 120 mark. Although, I had recently learnt that another member of our squad from yesteryear had a tally of 133. Perhaps I need to re-evaluate my goal.
Our insertion point was the North entry to Route 52, where we soon realised that the insurgents were coming thick and fast. We had to fight for every inch down that road. After 10 hrs of battling insurgents at every turn, we eventually reached our Southern most point, the insurgent stronghold of Masterton. It was the “home straight” from here. We blasted our way North as fast we could. Sporadically shooting insurgents from our windows as we went. The road was blocked near Mount Bruce so we had to make a detour back towards Masterton and take some of the back roads. I hope this wasn’t a trap. We eventually made it back over the hill to safety. I don’t think we were followed.
We did notice a few spotters located down the back roads that we didn’t clear. No doubt, they’ll relay any information back to their Supreme Leader and we’ll see reinforcements taking up defensive positions around the country side on the satellite imagery we receive.
Weeks of prior planning and INTEL gathering meant a smooth and successful mission was carried out. Against the odds, we returned home well after dark, safe and sound after a hard days work.
Some numbers for the mission:
620 km’s covered,
16.5 hrs of driving,
132 insurgents killed; of which 118 blindly follow Supreme Leader Skindo.
116 were killed on site
16 were questioned before being put in front of the firing squad.
7 evaded us.
For acts of bravery above and beyond the call of duty. In which I successfully carried out a raid into enemy territory and killed 120 hostiles or more, I am awarded the Ruby Badge. I also received various other badge upgrades as well.
We needed a coffee stop so parked up near this park. Started searching as others went off to grab a coffee. A quick find made by the team here. Signed as Team SHAT-ner
Thanks for the cache and the smiley.

The description had us looking in the wrong place for a while but after deciding to ignore it and search the area we were able to find the cache. Also still unsure on how the hint relates to this cache at all? Glad we found though who knew little pongaroa would have gc's.
Great spot. Neat little township. Awesome feed at the Hotel, recommend the burgers and chips yum!

Not quite what we expected but did find the cache under a block of concrete. Log was disintegrating so replaced with new waterproof one.
Road trip from Eketahuna to Dannevirke trying to get our numbers up. Perfect weather for the 1st of January 2015 to go caching. TFTC - left calling card instead of signing log to speed the day up a bit.
This was a surprise. I had heard of this man and his achievements but had no idea he was from these parts. The cache took a few minutes to find. I don't believe it was hidden how it should be. I found the stone first and then the cache under another object a short distance away. I rearranged things so they better represent the information in the cache description but they are unlikely to be correct, particularly as I was unable to understand the hint.
Operation 997.
After our recent mission to the November snow I realized I was now within 47 caches of 1000. The idea was then conceived to get three under 1000 (997) in order to get cache 1000 in Rarotonga at the end of November or early December. To get these last 44 we headed to Wairarapa (AKA Skindo Land) to pick up mostly park and grabs. The planned route had 49 to allow for DNFs, of which we used four. The mission took longer than expected but it was an interesting day - from getting stuck behind cows and then sheep through to an awesome lunch in Pongaroa - all in nice weather.
We had a BIG feed at the nearby pub before the very short drive to this cache.
I had a good look for this one and was ready to call defeat when AtomsNZ found it. JrGun9 had a good look at the cache (after playing in the nearby hollowed out tree) and was excited about putting the log back nice and safe - pretty good for a one year old.
T F T C and the unexpected bit of history MalcolmB.
Edited because I decided the history of this cache deserved a FP.

As said in Tommygun9's log below we embarked on a mission to collect 44 caches before our holiday/ honeymoon to Rarotonga. I had a lot of Skindo puzzles sitting solved so I searched out a route to collect the required number of caches- and didn't end up going past a single puzzle cache! (Oh well, looks like another mission will be needed).
As someone who does DNA Chemistry all day at work I was pretty excited about coming to this cache. It was pretty elusive but finally we found it and had it signed. Very cool area. TFTC

Headed out on the first flight to Wellington Saturday morning with FMZ and Lostcourse. Relocating a vehicle back to Auckland meant we had a big caching road trip ahead of us...! We headed back through the Wairarapa towards Napier, clocking up the numbers through skindo land. Sorry for the copy/paste log as its now all abit of a blur having cached for 36 hours with only a few short naps in between. Enjoyed the drive through these rough and winding gravel roads and saw alot of interesting sights.
36 hours, 1,200km, & 315 finds made for an epic adventure! Many thanks for the cache and the perfect excuse to make a weekend of it!

Took the first flight down to Wellington on Saturday for a fly-down-drive-back-caching weekend with mike-miss and FMZ - basically a caching raid across the North Island.Team FML! for the win! We headed out of Wellington making a beeline for the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay before venturing back to Auckland. We headed through a bunch of interesting winding back roads and saw a lot of beautiful sights and historic spots that only geocaching could have bought us too. We shared the duties around and took a few micro naps when ever prudent. Saturday was my biggest caching day ever, and this February, is easily my biggest month ever.
Arrived in Pongaroa at about 3am Sunday morning. Spent several minutes trying to find this one by torchlight before we found it in the obvious spot. Grabbed an hours nap here before heading on. Cheers for the cache placement!

Headed down to Wellington for a fly-down-drive-back-caching weekend with mike-miss and Lostcourse - basically a caching binge drive back to Auckland, caching under the moniker "Team F.M.L." We headed out of Wellington as quickly as possible to get some serious caching done in the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay before heading back to Auckland. Apologies for the copy/paste log, but we found >310 caches in 36 hours and for many it's hard to remember specific details. We headed through a bunch of interesting winding back roads and saw a lot of beautiful sights and historic spots. We shared the driving and stopped for about an hour to catch some shut eye in Pongaroa before continuing, caching all the way. Saturday was my biggest caching day ever, and this Feb, after just the first 36 hours, is already my biggest month ever. We were a little misled by the cache description here as it was hidden differently than described, but we got there in the end. We decided to park up here for an hour and have some shut eye before continuing on... TFTC!!!
A day caching with the Seagnoid and Bright_Jun after Pongaroa Picnic Event at Four Mile Bush Reserve in Skindoland. Quick find. Thanks for the cache.
Planned a huge day caching. Left at around 6.30 and started heading to pongaroa to the event. 40 caches on the way there then realized we couldnt do the rest we planned or we would be late. So headed a different way. After the Lunch we had another huge list of caches to get but got to pongaroa and petrol station wasnt open, 1 1/2 hours to masterton or 45 mins to pahiatua or dannivirke....hmmm that stuffs that plan up, should have thought about that earlier opps. So headed straight back to dannivirke and missed out a huge chunk of our planned trip. Thanks for a cache owners of all the ones we found along our trip.

[Green] Popmac rings me up, wanting to do a raid on Skindoland. We bring in super-new cacher Bright_Jun and sneak in under the cover of darkness. We left Palmy at 6am, attacked the natives of Skindoland with a relentless assault lasting 15 hours (including an hour off for tea and crumpets at the Pongaroa Picnic Event), travelling over 450km. We even had spare petrol in the boot, because there were no shops where we went. We defeated over 90 of the little blighters, not even a decimation. I bet the lords of Skindoland won't even notice.
Yay! Pongaroa at last! I had forgotten to bring water and am very thirsty. But the store is closed . I have been here before looking for the code of life, but could not find it. This time it is ridiculously easy. Did I not look there last time??

Found during an evening stroll. Believe it or not, the place was humming. Horse and cart and all and sundry were in the main street and at the pub fareweling someone.

A MEGA Adventure
Both Nova Lightning and myself had set ourselves caching targets that we were hoping to meet in time for the NZMEGA in a few weeks. So with a plan in progress and fuel in the tank away we set.
Departed home at 6pm Friday, returned home 3.30pm Monday, 7 hours sleep approx 470 caches and a great adventure.
We were deffinitly pleased that we could get fuel here otherwise it was going to be a long walk to Masterton
Thanks to all those that have placed caches especially Skindo as I think we gave his caches a bit of a nudge
Thanks for a great weekend of Caching and Bull.

Mega Weekend
It all started about a month ago when Cats&Dragons brought up the idea of heading down the line to collect 350+ caches. We both had targets that we wanted to meet before attending the NZ Mega. Plans and locations were drawn up and puzzles were begun to be solved. It took me a while to get my head around a few of the puzzles and with the help of a cacher I was soon on a roll.
The weekend finally came and we departed Hamilton at 6pm on a Friday night. 3days, 2,000km, & 11hrs sleep, later 472 caches collected. Thanks to all those who's caches I found especially Skindo with a huge number laid.

I love taking the back road like this. A day like today with magnificent weather was made for geocaching. First half I did some time ago and today the other half from Weber to Masterton was done. TFTC!
Taking the day today to do the 52 on 52 trail and a few diversions along the way. This one was really special. I never would have known that this was here without geocaching. Took a little while to locate the cache. Not sure if I understand the hint maybe something has changed here. Anyway, got it in the end. Thanks for bringing me to this place and TFTC, Biggles.
WE JUST COUDN'T GET CLOSE TO THIS CACHE, SOME GUY MOWING THE GRASS AND TOO MANY ONLOOKERS, ANOTHER TIME PERHAPS.
Day 5 of the trip home to Christchurch, Napier-Martinborough. Came down via route 52, a great way to see some back country roads. A very quiet road and some small communities. Thanks for bringing us this way. 50/52 for the trail. Plus some extras!
#4620. Great to see a memorial to Maurice Wilkins; well worth a cache here.
An amazing little memorial for such a tiny little community, thanks for bringing me here.

This cache was found as part of my epic as move down south to Christchurch from Auckland - A drive that involved around 3,000km, 350 caches, 14 days, and a bit of a detour through East Cape, Gisbourne, Napier/Hastings, some back roads in the Wairarapa, Cape Pallisier and Nelson/Tasman as well as every CANZ cache along the way that I was still missing. (Hence my excuse for the not as interesting log as I usually try to make mine.) But thanks to every awesome amazing as cacher that placed caches along these roads, you made my trip awesome, and very cache happy!
I had specially planned the move to involve route 52... and it was a great day! - I learnt how to pass sheep on the road, I met some interesting locals, and wow the number of washouts on the road! Thanks so much for putting these caches out here... definitely helped me towards the 500+ in a month finding challange! - (I am still to get the official count, but I think december ended up with about 510 geocaches - of which probably like almost 150 were skindo caches )
TFTC!!

Some strange event involving muddy people running around the streets seemed centred around GZ so I had to give this one a miss - will get it next time!
Found at 12:36:00 PM. Slowly making our way South for the Mega in Dunedin we decided to take the road less travelled today after noticing the number of caches along Route 52 and we are glad that we did.
Another bonus cache while chasing 52 on 52.
Thanks MalcolmB
