I'm staying in St Arnaud for a few nights and today I hiked up to Mt Robert, taking the Pinchgut Track up, then following the Robert Ridge Route as far as the Mt Robert ski field, then returning down Paddy's Track. Is was a beautiful day for it and a most enjoyable walk. Skipped this one on the way up, as people were having snacks by the nearby rocks, so I took a look on my way back down, soon finding the cache at GZ. TFTC!
Today I went from Lake Rotoroa to Lake Rotoiti. My mission: get up Moint Robert and catch some caches to get to 500.I thought it would take longer to do the loop. My navigation predicted 3,75h to do the loop, so I assumed it would take around 5h with findig the caches. It took me a bit more than 3,5h to find 12 of 18 caches.Yeeeaaah it's the 500th find and the highest at the moment!#500
Found this cache on my tramp to Angelus hutHad a good rest at the shelter before finding this one, big cache and well hidden.TFTC
Tftc out on a multiday with victoriousone, stayed an extra night at Angelus to do some exploring.
Our NEW ZEALAND - TASMANIA - AUSTRALIA JOURNEY takes us to beautiful places and provides us with an incredible number of wonderful moments and experiences.Occasionally we also visit a few GeoCaches along the way.Having found "RELAX", we continued on to the Angelus Hut....Thank you for placing, maintaining and caring snapfish2 from SwitzerlandPS: Translated with the Deepl app
Finally able to do a longer hike out here on the mountain, so great up here with the nice views and the cool track. Of course I had to collect all geocaches along the way. Never was a long search, so no special remarks about the hides. Thanks to all CO's!
In order to satisfy the requirements of a challenge cache, todays aim was elevation up to Angelus peak, and back, along with a couple of side trips, in a day. Yes, it is possible even at this time of the year, with one end being in darkness though, the oh dear it's early end. I walked 40 km over the 15 1/2 hours and gathered together 27 caches. With the previous days snow in the area, the wind from the South, across the top of the ridge, created enough wind chill to freeze my drinking tube and make some ice crystals in my spare water bottle. And, just enough that there were a handful of snowflakes further along. Then, at the other of the day, the Northerly wind was warm. This was a few short of my original plan of 33 to keep on the safer side of darkness at the end of the trip.
This was #6. After peeking in the window of the hut with the torch (it's still o'dark o'clock) I realised there might have been someone sleeping in there. On to the cache now. No view at this time of the morning.

Not sure why I hadn’t thought of looking for caches on the way up, let’s put it down to hypoxia from the hill or something. Amazing spot! TFTC
I did the Pinchgut/Paddy circuit with a group of friends staying at Bushline Hut so, of course, took the opportunity to grab a few caches on the way... a good excuse for a rest break! I was very glad to get to the top of the Pinchgut track. This was a nice easy find with great views, TFTC!
Again a nice off track to relax and enjoy the view. The one placing the cache back hurt his finger with a rock, so we then headed to the shelter to clean up the wound and put a plaster on it. Both container and logbook were in good condition.

I'd forgotten how seriously lovely it is on top of Mt Robert. The view & plant life is lovely this time of year
RNZ made quick work of the cache once we worked out the location, not where we thought it would be.
Weather is going to be very hot while we are staying in St Arnaud for the next 3 days so today was a hike up Mt Robert to the Relax shelter via Pinchgut track, then across to Bushline hut and down Paddy’s track.
The hike up Pinchgut was not as difficult as I renembered, I might be a bit fitter these days compared to when I last did it over 20 years ago!! I had forgotten how beautiful the view is on the way up & from the summit We had a magic day weather wise & it actually wasn't too hot

A little further away from where I thought it would be, but just as well as we had a family here searching around the hut for something. Could they be geocachers? Don’t think so, they appear to be mountain flora enthusiasts.
Anyway, this cache is fine and a nice spot away from the grand central station that this intersection can turn into on days like today. TFTC B&W.
First full day in St Arnaud and it’s a warm one.
We decided on a trip up Mt Robert to the Relax shelter via Pinchgut track, then across to the hut and down Paddy’s track.
We looked at the weather and the day after is predicted to be even hotter, so today is the day for this and we got an early start.
We loved the climb up. It was not as difficult as I imagined or RG72 remembered, and we came across another couple to chat to on the way. The descent was a little more exposed, but no dramas here either. We did feel a bit drained after the trek though - probably lacking some fitness.
17 caches targeted today. Just one true DNF, another we gave a miss as there was a nice family settled in for a while. All caches signed RG + ricnz or variations close to that. Any particular notes on each cache is in the first paragraph/sentence, but we found them in pretty good condition.
Sorry for this cut and paste bit and thanks all COs for making the walk fun.

Great cache and hut BUT Make Sure to duck your head going under the door going in, I learned my lesson, But anyway Great hide TFTC
Quickly found after a great night at the Bushline hut. Weather is much better today on my way to Angelus hut. Thanks for hiding.
It was time to relax as well, some lunch with a beautiful view and a quick find of the cache with SJT_NZ. Thanks b&w all in good order.
Relax indeed. Found with Tregearp on our way up to Angelus Hut. Stunning views on a warm Autumn afternoon. All in good condition, signed log and replaced as found. Thanks b&w for another cache.
Found by Mum. She's feeling very pleased with herself for making it up Mt Robert.
It's amazing up here. So peaceful & vast.

The problem when you go on a hike with non-cachers is that they don't always want to stop and wait until "only that one more" is found. So there were some caches on the way up here I wasn't able to look for. But they decided to enter the little shelter to change the sweat wet shirts, my chance to quickly look for this one. Glad it was a quick find.
Thanks bumandworker! Stunning walk with amazing views!!

One upside from the recent lockdown period is that it gave me the opportunity to think about some day walks and overnighters that I've wanted to do for a while but never got around to. So, with NZ regaining some sense of freedom I set off for one such walk - the Mount Robert circuit.
Not the best day for lingering long up here today - a bit of a chill breeze passing through.
Plenty of trampers pushing on to Angelus - many who were tourists who are on the move again now after lockdown. Stopped at the GZ for a wee snack pleased to have made it here in under 90 minutes with cache stops en route.
It's all downhill from here, I think.
Cheers b&w

Visiting from Dunedin, aiming to get to Angelus Hut today and stay the night. After walking up Pinchgut (no easy task!) it was time for a cup of tea at Relax Shelter. Lovely spot! Found the geocache quickly and easily. Then it was time to put the waterproofs on as the cloud was rolling in and drops of rain could be felt. TFTC!
From Kea Ora I thought I had another hour of climbing so was pleasantly surprised for the track to level off but lost the tree cover. Im at the Relax Hut but no relaxing for me. Walked over there for a quick easy find. Cheers.
Now WHERE is Pinch Gut Hut??
Zara and I are off for some much needed tree time, with Lake Rotoiti on my agenda for today. Spent a fabulous time Friday and Saturday walking around Lake Rotoiti. Today my sights are set on Mt Robert. So lets go. Started from Buller River Bridge at 6.20am to finally get back to Zara at 2.30. Then decided to return home after a stop at Karens for an ice cream. Its been an amazing weekend.

Clear and sunny day was awesome for this short track around Mt.Robert and the caches made it even more interesting. Thank you
This was our designated decision point. Do we carry on further to the skifield or just do the loop back down Paddy's track. We had our lunch and contemplated the weather. It had been overcast all day and the wind was starting to get up a bit, so we decided on Plan B - go down Paddy's. But first we had a cache to find. Grabbed the GPS, headed in the direction indicated and yes there's the cache just waiting for us. Signed log, then carried on our merry way. tftc
On our way from Picton to ChCh we stopped in St Arnaud for a walk in the area close to lake Rotoiti. Along the track we found 9 geocaches, all of tem in good condition. Tftc
Found this one during the Mt. Robert loop were we had a nice and scenic view.
Thanks for hiding it.

Our Christmas this year was spent with the very very extended whanau, introducing the overseas portion of them into Chrismas in the bush.
We definitely did relax here! Baby woke up about 200 metres before this hut, and so then enjoyed running around inside the hut!

Heading away for a few days with the extended whanau for a bit of hiking and some caching on the way, signing the log books as Team Polak for all of us. Last day of walking out and heading back home. Amazing scenery along the ridge that we had to follow as it bears the name of one in our party! great views, high winds, but rain went away, and we had a ball! TFTC!!
Nach einer kurzen Rast in der Hut auf die Suche nach dieser Dose gegangen und schnell fündig geworden. Thanks for the Cache.
Found it nice hut, It was that nice that we could see Mt Murchison from Mt Robert

We are keen geocachers on holiday from Tauranga and grabbing a few smileys as we go. Walked up Paddy's track then down Pinchgut and had a wonderful walk. Had an easy find here with our geocashing eyes in focus. Cache is all good. TFTC
We had two wonderfull days in the Nelson Lakes National Park. We stayed at the very new campside called teetotal, basic but nice. On the second day we did the popular hike to mt roberts and the other way down to the carpark. We found some nice caches but also had two DNFs, but their probably gone.
Found it on the way back from the ridge. On the way upwards there was a muggel couple right at ground zero.
Thank you very much for this nice cache on this beautiful hike!
Greetings from Switzerland , Team Fludia

Finally made it to the top!!!! Woo hoo!!!! And now we also know why the cache is named this too. Was great looking over the stormy tops while inside the hut. Quick find and then off we go, this time down Paddy's Track. The views are just stunning from up here, we made it!!!
Together with Fenz i had the pleasure to visit New Zealand. We were traveling around for quite some time and thought: Why not combine that with some geocaching! That doubled the fun and we found a lot nice places we wouldnt have, if we werent looking for the boxes invisible to the other tourists. For details on our cache finds see the logs of Fenz. We want to thank all the owners for their effort, the nice hides and the fun we had on our journey! Definitely gonna come back to you Kiwis, greetings from the other end of the world, keep it on!
Quick find today on our way from Angleus Hut to Bushline. Beautiful views! We dropped a trackable off too - please make sure this one travels far! TFTC
Ninalila and I spent a few days visiting around Nelson's lakes and Karamea.
We went hiking to discover nice places and landscapes, and of course play geocaching at the same time
We found all the boxes without difficulty and discovered really good spots for photography.
We will keep good memories from everything we saw (Lake Rotoiti, Lake Rotoroa, Mt Robert, Moria Gate Arch, Mirror Tarn...)
It was a good opportunity to see a lot of native birds on each tracks we went.
So surprising to see them so close and get great pictures
We signed on logbooks with our team nickname : Lekiprokos
Thank you to all owners and their boxes for the discoveries we made.

fefe.adrien and I have visited the Nelson's lakes during few days and spent a great time.
Nice to see a preserved fauna & flora at the lake Rotoiti, many birds were so closed ! Nice waterfall at the lake Rotoroa.
Geocaching was perfect for walking and tramping around, especially the Mount Robert : such a nice view from the summit !
All of boxes were quite easy to find and well maintained but to many boxes found to make the difference in each log.
we logged with our team name : lekiprokos

Day 6 of an upper South Island holiday from Rotorua with sveppi. Started the hike on 995 finds and this is number 1001! Great spot to relax in the sun, but the wind is coming from this way today so we are not stopping for lunch just yet. Cache visible but I guess not many come this far off the track.
We do need to relax and have some lunch but the wind on this side is a bit much today to relax. Nice spot. Love this track, and now that we are on the ridge we can enjoy the views. TFTC
Found on our walk up to Lake Angelus hut. Well placed away from the busy track and a straight forward find. Enjoying the sunshine and views, thanks b&w.
Out for a Sunday walk with all the Makka pakkas. Plane for the day is to do the loop up to bush line hut and back down pinch gut. Had a lovely day out with lots of caches to find, the Nelson lakes as a backdrop what more could you won't. Thanks for all the caches we found
Worth the epic walk( for us sandgropers used to flat country) to see this view and beautiful alpine scenery. And a geocache at the top as well.
Nice Walk in St Arnaud

Mrs Kiwimykl (GC name NZDi) had had a cr@p week at work and needed to de-stress. When NZDi needs to de-stress, she climbs mountains and today she suggested Mt Robert. Knowing this would be a physical challenge in her current state, I suggested perhaps we do some of the more gentler tracks out at Pelorus Bridge but NZDi wasn't having a bar of it as she needed something more serious to de-stress.
So I did a quick pocket query on St Arnaud caches and loaded them into the eTrex, we packed a lunch and some GC essentials, got into some appropriate attire and headed up the valley to de-stress. Arriving at 9.15am, the aim of the day was to clear as many caches as we could on the Mt Robert Paddy's/Pinchgut Track circuit and see how we went from there.
We did the circuit in a clockwise direction figuring we would have Paddy's Track pretty much to ourselves on the way up and may meet a few others coming up as we went down the Pinchgut and we were pretty much on the money with that assumption. Accordingly this was our 8th of 15 caches on the circuit and 9th of 16 caches overall.
A good GPS fix and hint made this a QEF . We then headed to the shelter to change out of our sweat soaked clothes into some dry ones for the trip down the Pinchgut.
Found with NZDi.

Staying at the Airforce holiday home at rotoiti - great opportunity to bag a few of the many caches hidden up here.
Woke to a cloudy morning but decided to head up Mt Robert via the pinchgut track anyway. Didn't realise how busy the track would be - so no stopping on the way to this one - probably walked past at least 6 or 7 caches - but need to save them for another quieter day.
Found this quickly as we were in freezing cloud and Mr raisinpig did not want to stop for long.

A weekend trip up to the Nelson Lakes with G H 6 7 1 0 and the Seagnoid was planned with a couple of days of the weekend in one of the work baches not far off the lake side in Rotoiti/ St Arnaud. Targets were set; get the Seagnoid past 4000 caches, get more than 50 a day for G H 7 6 1 0, and get me past 3200 cache finds. Also in target was some tramping, some boat caching (grabbing whilst moored as close as safely possible to G Z) some 4 W Driving and some basic park and grabs. We also wanted to get all of the puzzle/unknown caches in St Arnaud as well as 100% of the multi caches in St Arnaud (cache Tectonics!). There was driving, boating, walking, rain, mist, sun, ducklings, eels and trout, sandflies (of course), beech trees and great views. Fun and sweat (no tears), a wasp sting and over 100 caches found for me. We all surpassed our targets and at the end of 2 full on days we returned to a cooler Blenheim than when we left tired out.
The last day of January and this January has probably been my most prolific with lots of great South Island caches, with a handful of N I ones thrown in for good measure. Todays plan is to start with some P &Gs, then off up the Pinch Gut for a nice tramp, then back to the car.
It is location, location, location, up here and this canny placement gets todays first F P. Had it all, views, container, hide and a good walk to get here

[green] Capperz decided that this was the weekend for a marathon run on St Arnaud. Not sure why, except that base lodge there had a cancelled weekend and was free to grab. So he, I and GH6710 had an interesting time caching the surrounds. Rained on and off. The wet long grass meant that I had wet feet for the entire trip. Saw the insides and tops of clouds, some great views, lotsw of rabbits (or maybe just the one, many times over - it always did the same thing: safe on the side of the road, it decides to runs across just in front of the car). Also got to see robins, sandflies, no keas, sandflies and more sandflies. We managed to get GH to break his 50/day record, and over 120 for the whole trip. Saturday we climbed half way up Mt Robert in the morning then boated around Lake Rotoiti in a little yellow plastic dingy for the afternoon. Sunday was lonely cache day - some over 10 months since their last find. Many of these found with GH's 4x4, bumping over some very rough roads, my first real experience of four wheel driving. What an awesome weekend!
On a fine day this would be an awesome place for a picnic. Today everything is damp, the grass is slippery, and my shoes slide all over the place. Yet it is still an awesome place. Gets a fav from me

Our day on Mt Robert. Much anticipated. Car out to Mt Robert Car Park, up Pinchgut to Relax Shelter, across to Bushline and then down Paddys. A warm down along the Lakeside track. Managed 25 cache finds. A great day out.
This was #11 for the day. I wondered just how relaxing it would be if you really did need to use the shelter so named. Presumably a refuge from nasty weather, otherwise why would you spend time in a windowless shed? Hardly relaxing. But pleased to be here on relatively flat ground.
Cache find was straightforward. Cache in order; log signed, then safely re-hidden, just as found.
TFTC found with team cacher Sweet P too
The Turtle strikes again!
A note of appreciation to the cache owners in and around St Arnaud. We have encountered only one DNF in our first 2 days of caching in the region. Caches discoverable, in good condition with logs intact and signable. Altogether good caching. Thank

After the heavy rains of the morning had stopped and the sky cleared a bit, we started the Robert Ridge Walk here. Beautiful hike with amazing views, even in not ideal weather conditions. Unfortunately, on the way down, my group was too fast, so that I had to leave out two caches. Nevertheless, many nice finds today. TFTC
#8578. We were feeling more pooped than relaxed when we got to GZ. The cold wind ensured we didn't linger long. We then headed off towards the lake, to loop back via the loop track. TFTC.
We are in St Arnaud for two nights and decided to take advantage of the good weather today to have a walk up Mt Robert as the weather forecast for the weekend is not great. Decided to take the anticlockwise circuit as the only thing worse than a steep ascent is a steep descent on a gravel track.
Near the track junction, we met up with an American who had taken the clockwise route. He said this is his fifth visit to St Arnaud!
We were pretty excited to find this cache as it is at the highest altitude we have found a cache. Good to find a big cache too and retrieved all three TBs. TFTC.
