Several years ago I learned about the North Island Old School Challenge. Since then, I have been (very slowly) working towards completing the requirements for that challenge. This year, as I was getting close, I set myself the goal of completing that challenge. A few weeks ago I took a trip to Whangarei to complete that goal, and today the culmination of several years of North Island adventures is realised as I plan to finally log the challenge cache. As the final for that challenge is half way down (or is it half way up) this hill trail, I got together with a few other cachers and we parked a car at the bottom and then drove to the top so we only had to walk one (downhill) way. As cachers do, we also went to collect some other unfound caches in the area, and this was one of them.
The cache here was found after a brief search, and seems to be in good shape, all safe and dry.

Caching with friends in an area I wouldn’t really walk by myself, who could give up a chance like that?
So off I set for a 4 hour visit to Wellington. Some of the caches I had already found (in fact I was the FTF for one of them) but it was good to get out in the fresh air so I didn’t mind waiting while the others found them.
Very easy to spot ( even when it is dark) where to enter the sea of gorse to look for the native plant protecting the cache.
Kia ora rawa atu for the cache geminicachenz.

The Old School Challenge cache is one that (independently) YetiNZ and I have been looking at for a number of years now. He recently fulfilled the qualification for it, and I am very close, so he and I, together with the Seagnoid and NZ_B, went out for a great stroll tonight with the express aim of finding it and a few selective caches, including this one. Luckily with 4 people and 2 cars available we were able to park a car at either end of our route and make it just a one way downhill walk.
I came here today armed with loppers to make short work of any gorse etc. They weren't needed due to the cache being found only 3 days earlier after being undisturbed for over 9 years previously. That would have been a good statistic to claim for the group.
With no issues to report with either the cache itself or the logsheet, we swiftly added our names onto it and replaced it as found, stopping only to chat briefly to a couple of scramblers who had stopped to ask if we were ok? After all, who would be out here after dark eh?
Thanks for the cache.

YetiNZ, NZ_B , TwigNZ and the Seagnoid are heading off on a nice Tuesday evening after work to walk the track between Horokiwi Road and Grenada North. We dropped a car off at the Grenada end and drove back to Horokiwi road to walk down. Nearly back at the car, and it is now night time. But all it took was a quick search with the cellphones, especially as Mr-Mcgoo had lopped out the gorse making access easy. Was surprised to see the cache hidden in the ditch, but on the other hand it was all nice and dry.
(# 7311) Heard that this cache could still be here even though archived so I went to check it out. Took my trusty machete with me and getting to the cache was actually easier than I thought given the clue. The container was quickly found and the log book was nice and dry. Thanks for bringing me here.
Noted this one last week, when I was searching for caches placed by hiders beginning with 'E' to complete a challenge.... A quick find today by myself and Melon. As the container was fine, we replaced the (shredded) logbook with a new, double bagged one, so this one is 'ready to go again' if the CO cares to resurrect it. TFTC.
Found it after sifting through the various old plastic bottles accumulated here! Thanks for the cache.
We found both caches lol dont think there should be two , one was quite unusable (wet) and the other was a little damp . Larger white cache and a smaller black cache .
Quick find with scottjpalmer. We also found two containers - the bigger one is a bit toast. TFTC
I also found both logs and containers here today. Signed both for good measure although one is definitely in bad condition. TFTC #157
ALso got this one on my short walk today. Logbook was pretty wet. TFTC. Sherlock Hood.
Very quiet in these parts today except for a huge truck that followed me up the road and then struggled to turn around.
Log paper is disintegrating.

Found orginally as part of phasevisitor team, now created own account, re-logging as yorkshirekiwi83.
Last day of our weekend visiting family in Wellington region and we decided to spend the morning looking for ones around the Porirua area.

Easy enough find, though two containers was a little confusing. Found while out with Phasevisitor.

Quickly located cache. Soggy and collapsing log sheet. Then, replacing cache, I found the other one, smaller, but log in good order. Signed both for good measure.
It was with great joy that I found this one.. To get the letter "E" for the great A_Z challenge cache! now only "U" or "Z" to get. Log book a bit damp .
Got to gz the little one looking around trying to find evuntally found it logged it. and found some paint balls neatly hidden under a small plat growing on the side of the road little one picked them up so 1Grunta got bit of wood from the side of road and asked little guy to put them one of on the ground at a time and he put the wood on top of one and jumped on it and it got sqaushed
Searching for some nearby on a great sunny Sunday afternoon (without success initially). Decided to try this one. Wasnt too sure to start with but it was the Cache. Interesting that the road below is "lovers lane" or Sandwich Alley. TFTC.
Nice quick find on a beautiful morning. Only one dirt biker nearby on the way here. TFTC!
A Nice quick cache and the first using my new Etrex H... The co-ords were spot on...TFTC!

Something weird with this one, we found 2 containers, one high one low, both had logs in it so it seems a balance had found the high one and others the low one!!
We combined both in the same spot (high) as not to confuse, lol.
TNLN TFTC's!!

Why is it that these sort of road ends have assorted rubbish chucked around? Anyway, great views to be had, and smart little hiding place for the cache. TFTC
Found with kjwx on our second visit to this spot - we were somewhat put off by the dodginess of the parking area after dark last time. No one around in the daylight (although there was ample evidence of nighttime activities scattered on the ground). A quick find as the cache was on the ground and exposed. Rehidden in line with the hint. TFTC, and for spelling "Caribbean" correctly - something the street sign writers have irritatingly failed to do!
Second time lucky ... Last visit with JardisLikeTardis there were far roo many druggies, dealers and Don Juans near GZ to bother stopping. Today it's obviously not a tropical paradise, though somebody's been very busy playing Seven Minutes in Heaven. Unfortunately, our return is best described as five minutes in a gorse-filled hole during monsoon season.
Had decided to make our total of the day a nice rounded 5 and we hadn't found it.TFTC
Lovely view from up here and a quick visit on the way home from work. Might be needing a new smaller plastic bag for the log as tricky to get out of the bottle, and would appear to have a small hole in the bag as the log was 'damp'. TFTC
Easy find on a dry day. the log book is little damp and the container is now more white than black. TFTC.
Found this on the way back from "Nearly a Kingswood".
Not difficult, would have been easier if it wasn't dark.

Managed to spot this one pretty quickly before heading further up the hill. TFTC!
We were not sure that the container was in the place it should have been, so have replaced it a different place - will contact owner.

#617. A quick find at GZ on the way home from work. The container was larger than I was expecting. SL, TFTC. -tb
Took a bit longer to find than it should have but eventually found it on my second inspection of the first place I looked.
Took longer than it should have, this one has been on our DNF list for a while so it was good to be able to knock it of while we were in the area. Please note that the cache is not a micro though, it should be a small NINO TFTC
#190 - We wanted to initially attempt this one the same day we climbed the hill - but found it disabled... so we decided to come back today to complete it. SL TFTC!
Yes, the cache is there, found it without too much trouble. (the hint helped!) TFTC
Please check this is still here as there has been a good deal of work around the cache site
First cache of the day on a Sunday morning. Cache found fairly quickly by geoson who spied it in its hideyhole. Many thanks Matt for reactiving this cache as it allowed us to claim a smiley. .
Undertook this prickly search after the young one finished his soccer game this morning, inconjunction with 'Andy&Jack'. Hunted high and low and all about before successfully locating the cache. My GPS had about a 15ft error. Undertook a bit of CITO while leaving. TFTC
A beautiful day and some brownie points in the bank mean't a couple of hours could be dedicated to caching this afternoon. First of five and a busy little cache...3rd log for the day. Found cache very quickly, although the ditch in front of it is well camouflaged . TFTC nice placement Cheers!
Wow! Busy day for this one. After watching a soccer game we (SAROC included) wandered up the hill. Being as newly green as the grass to geocaching, it took awhile to find, however the hunt was successful. I'm looking forward to the next adventure.
A quick find this afternoon. Was preparing to don my anti-gorse garb and then realised that the cache was retrievable without needing it. Glad to get this one at last after a couple of DNFs at the previous location when it had gone AWOL. There was a newly burned-out car sitting very close at the top of the road, the locals had obviously been having a rip-roaring time the previous evening. Signed log, TFTC.
Almost thought this was a FTF with a clean log sheet.. Easy find. Was a bit worried by the amount of gorse there... Thanks for the cache..

S 41° 11.034 E 174° 50.526
Distance From Old: 287.3 feet or 87.6 meters
Co-Ords updated and new cache deployed after the original was buried. There should be no more probs with this at the new GZ.

It would appear that recent work in the area has either buried or moved the cache. I will endevor to have a replacement cache up and running again by the end of the month.
Second unsuccessful visit in search of this cache. This should have been quite easy to find given the consistent coordinates obtained and the explicit hint, so either it's not there or it's very well concealed. I went over the area with a fine toothcomb and used all the "cacher's instinct" approaches but still no luck.

Was about to give up when Mrs YuGeo found it. Nice views through the passing light drizzle.

Took a bit of looking but it was in the obvious place once I had found it.I had a garmin etrex vista cx and the coords on indicated that the cache was 5-10 m NE.ie over the fence. It was a cloudy day.
Jr taybee has this own account how am logging this old find under his new Username (Jr taybee) was log as part of taybee team
great clues...easy when you read them and look around...lots of tracks where people have searched..but actually it is right there in front of you!!!
We searched for ages. We found the deadly nightshade, lots of bottles, lots of golf balls, but sadly no cache. It must be very well hidden.
Third find for the day - well and truly on a roll. Got a bit confused [?] to start with but after some searching we got it, yay. Well hidden.
We got here just in time to catch an orange sunset over the hills. Was a cold and windy day but we just had to get out of the house for our own sanity. Cool little find and wouldn’t have been able to find without the clue.

Having trouble keeping up with things lately, caches seem to be getting published faster than I can find them. So, no Shorty Street tonight as a bit of mid-week night caching was required.
Pretty trick hide this one and took quite a bit of looking before I found it, nice pleasant night however.
SL, many thanks for the cache Matt.

great view. lots of cars parked for the kids football down the road. bit of a hunt but got it after letting the gps zoom in. TNLN SL TFTC.
2TF! Tried for FTF on the evening it was published, but like yeetrees the next morning, I found it too hard by torchlight. Came back for another look during the day and found after quite a bit of hunting. I found the coords about 3-4m out, according to my GPSr they are S41 11.036 E174 50.523, but that is probably easily within the variation you might expect between units on different days.
Enjoyed the views on a brilliant sunny day! TNLNSL TFTC.

3rd TF. Humm seems to be a trend forming here I also had two visits today to find this one the first at 0730hr and again at 1620hr. The ground is getting quite roughed up from searchers slipping on the slopping terrain. Watch out for the Deadly Nightshade plants close to GZ, if littlies ( or anyone )eat the berries they can get quite sick, and contact with the plant can give some people nasty skin rashes. Not quite the quick drive by I was expecting. TNLN SL TFTC
Whoopee!!!!! , FTF, Nice cache for my 750, this was meant to be!!!!!This was the second attempt at this one, arrived there initially at 5am this morning and using a touch is not a good way to find this one so gave up after ½ an hour in the cold frosty Wellington morning , decided a second attempt was required, after a bit of hunting high and low finally had cache in hand, cool spot for a cache love the view, COOL, TFTC TNLNSL (750)
Went looking at 5 this morning in the frost and ice, but alas no sign at GZ. GPSr was down to zero. May try again later
