Headed to Orakei Korako today and found there was an Earthcache there. Took the boat ride and did the walks. Very interesting and popular with visitors, lots of overseas tourists about. Gathered the information at the various coordinates and did some research then provided the info to the CO. Thanks for the Earthcache at this great geological site YuGeo4.
Day 9 Lake Taup to Rotorua, New Zealand. The drive Lake Taup had some amazing locations to do over and cache. It was a last minute decision to visit Orakei Korako as we were driving past. Im so glad we did decide to visit such an amazing Geothermal location with a wide variety of Geothermal activity. Thanks for the Earthcache cache YuGeo4 #7,871
4-week family trip through NZ - DNF!Today we visited the Orakei geothermal area. A great site, and absolutely worth the money . When we were back at the Visitors Center, I tried to have a go at this Earth Cache. First we made the required photo, but at the waypoint for Q4, there was no information sign about the object to be found. Also, nothing about "What was destroyed in the sixties". No idea, how Q4 or Q5 should be answered with info on site. Furthermore, the sign for Q2 doesn't show numbers for the terraces, so it's also not suitable for answering the question. At that point, I thought "What the heck, I don't have to find every cache" and called it a day. After 15 years of geocaching, this is **my first DNF on an Earth Cache** - Yeah !----DNF #986 - 14 to go ...
This place is amazing. Probably the best geothermal area in the region. We came here 45 years ago in 1979. We wanted to come back and see if we were just as impressed and we were. From what we remember it was less formal then, maybe due to fewer Health & Safety regulations. We were able to go right down to the water's edge in the Pool of Mirrors. We liked the questions. It got us thinking a lot more about what we had seen.Answers sent to CO. Fav Point given. TFTC
We thought it would be quick get the answers and leave. 3 hours later we left. We were blown away. Sure the entry fee is not cheap but you can get the answers without crossing over the lake but we chose to do that. Its so worth it, at least it was for us, as we have never seen anything like this before. We were like kids in a sweet shop! Answers sent to ECO Photo attached. Have an FP
We did Orakei Korako during a family holiday. I did the earthcache begore we left. A beautiful geothermal park !
Today we visited Orakei Korako, very nice place.Despite the rain we had a very good time here. Thanks for making this earth cache, answers are sent.greetings from Team Camperfietser
What an amazing place. We camped overnight and woke to an amazing sunrise over the terraces. We took the ferry over and spent a good couple of hours in awe. Never visited somewhere so stunning.Answers sent to COThanks for bringing us here
Headed down to Taupo for a long weekend to attend the Possum Night Trail run on Saturday. Left Auckland early on Friday, getting stuck in the traffic on the way to Fieldays at Mystery Creek. Soon left the State Highway to travel down to Turangi before traveling up to Taupo.
On Sunday morning I left my accommodation early to get a good start on the day as I wanted to make the most of the time I had before an event in Hamilton later that night.
My plans for a walk around Craters of the Moon were put on hold as it started pouring down. I wouldn't have minded the rain so much if I hadn't strained my ACL. So instead I was targeting caches that didn't require too much walking or time out in the rain.
Arrived here and it was very quiet. Found most of the info, but some information signs are no longer there. If I didn't have the injury I would have taken the time to go across on the boat and walk around, as the rain had now stopped.

We visited this place not so long ago with ebrm and answered this cache on the way. It was a great discovery in this unreal environment. TFTC

We visited Orakei Korako - what an awesome spot! Strolled around about two hours and had a lot of fun. Thanks for the EC!
spent 6 great weeks in New Zealand with my The start was a bit bumpy (Cyclone Gabrielle) but then it got better and better. We travelled to both islands and discovered a lot. We photographed and filmed many beautiful things, but most of it stayed in our hearts.
Almost everywhere we stopped, a cache was already waiting for us. Most of the caches are well maintained and easy to find.
With mostly very nice weather, we saw a lot of this impressive island. In many places, caches were waiting for us, which were sometimes easy and sometimes difficult to find. This cache was also included and was successfully signed
We puzzled a lot in advance and the tours were well prepared
So this box was also well found.
now I have another on my personal cache card.
many thanks to [^] **YuGeo4** [^] for the effort and the cache

Stopped by with MSueZ and our tour group for a couple of hours to explore. We walked the whole loop enjoying the sights. Very awesome place to visit! Thanks for the added fun!
Visited this area and took the tour. Amazing colours, features and heat coming from this area.

Found when we holidayed here two years ago, but we never got an answer from the cache owner, and by the time Mum realised my premium membership had lasted, so taking the opportunity to log this today. TFTC
Just realised I submitted answers fir this two years ago but never got the ok to log it, so finally claiming the cache for this beautiful location. TFTC
Found yesterday. What an amazing place, so glad we went across to explore. Answers and photo sent to cache owner.
We went over to complete this cache whilst we were nearby, and really enjoyed the area. Unfortunately some of these questions are now unanswerable as one of the signs has been removed. I have emailed the CO twice, waiting for a response but it appears that the CO is not geocaching now so responses are unlikely. Still a lovely area to visit and learn about. TFTC
Answers sent to the CO but one of the information boards seemed to be missing so we had to wing it. We didn't go over on the boat, but will hopefully come back one day.
This spot has been on the to-do list for a while. Well worth the trip across the river. Make sure to look over the deck and see whether you can see any eels or trout. We saw both while we were there. A very peaceful location - makes a great getaway.
We visited here on our way to Rotorua for the weekend. I have been waiting a couple of days for a response to my email and message from the cache owners but haven't heard anything so am now posting our pics from our visit. It wasn't as colourful as the brochures make it out to be but was still exciting to see it all and we walked all over where ever we were able to go. I had a chat with the Cafe manager to gleen information we needed as a sign is missing now. On looking out a Cafe window we saw eels gathering - maybe the owners fed them so they come regularly for others to see them. Thanks for enticing me back here again and this time I bought my two boys. Very interesting place to learn about.
Came down this way for a weekend in Rotorua. Mum (SethRaven) wanted to visit this and I haven't been here either . . . . . was here with my fiance, Mum and master SethRaven. We couldn't find one of the signs so Mum chatted with the Cafe Manager and I checked out a newspaper article that was framed on the wall. With these 2 resources at hand we think we located the required answers. We loved the walk around the Terraces and checked out the cave (such a spiritual place) and the boiling mud and when we were back at the Cafe we saw eels gathering outside around some rocks next to the Cafe. Wonder if someone here feeds them so they keep returning. Was a lovely place to visit, thanks for bringing us here today. I sent my answers to the cache owner under my Mums account and her email as I haven't updated my new email to this account yet. thank you, Tim.
Well this was an event. I had been here in 2007 and keen to come again, and grab a cache at the same time. Joking with the ferry driver going over about NZ going into lockdown and he collared me later on just as it was announced and they started shutting the place down. Mad dash to book a ferry and get to Invercargill but made it, only 24hours late!
A truly fascinating place to visit and we enjoyed brilliant weather. Answers sent and photo attached to prove I was there. TFTC.
Wir kamen hierher weil es etwas abgelegen ist und das war die beste Entscheidung. Früh am Morgen, kaum Leute, traumhaftes Wetter und dieses Naturschauspiel. Da kommt Freude auf. Dfdc FP IN
We visited the terraces as part of our trip to Australia and New Zealand. We had a lovely day and took many pictures! I've sent the answers to the questions to the co, waited quite a bit for confirmation but I guess they were okay.
Auf der Fahrt nach Rotorua ein paar Abstecher zum Cachen gemacht.

Spent a pleasant few hours here, made more fun getting the clues - not helped by GPS playing up, so hard to know if I was in the right place at times. Anyway, came up with what I thought were the required answers, so hope they were all acceptable
We spent all afternoon on the terraces and then spent the night camping by the lake in our van. What a fantastic place, and for us probably the best thing yet in NZ. Answers sent to CO. Tftc.
found this cache the day before hiking the Tongariro crossing!

What a nice place to visit after doing the Squeeze this was a nice place to come to. Quiet here even though a public holiday but there were a few people going across to the terraces. We think things have been updated here with one sign being renewed and one not there anymore. But thanks to the info inside and Mr Google we were able to answer the required questions We sent answers as a group email from myself, TNXPro, Mcjamdals, Davidsonclan and Philip Perry who visited earlier in the week. Thanks for an interesting earthcache
The hilarious part of being here is when the paddle ends up being far too long and the last thing I would have thought about packing for a day out on the water was my wallet! I would have really liked a drink and/or an ice cream but I had no idea this was here. Neat place though and a lot of history - we got nice and close to the terraces before continuing up stream back to the car. Cheers YuGeo4, TFTC
This was a wonderful day out with Team BoP. A fabulous place to come. Answers sent by NZ Flossy. Many Thanks Cheers ??
I last visited this area over 10 years ago, and had forgotten how spectacular the terraces are, both across the water, and up close. The area has had a major upgrade since I was last here, new car parks, visitor centre and Signage. I gathered what information I could from the New Signage, and supplemented it with some online research and sent that through to the CO. Hopefully that will be sufficient.
Many thanks for bringing me back to this area, and making me think a little more about it.

We have had a lovely time visiting your beautiful country. These Earthcaches have given us a great insight into how difficult it is living with Mother Nature. As we are just leaving it is time to log the Earthcaches in waiting. Many thanks for setting this interesting Earthcache for our enjoyment and TFTC.
Today being International Earth Cache Day, we wanted to log an Earth Cache. Luckily enough, we were traveling along the Thermal Explorer Highway which featured a fair number of them. However, we were either partially blind or just unlucky, because every time we missed a sign with required information... In the end we managed to complete two Earth Caches.
Our first stop was Orakei Korako. We were early enough to arrive before most tourists, so we had the place almost to ourselves which was great. The terraces and colours were very impressive. Only the two geysirs were sleeping, which was a pity. We found most of the information without problem, only one sign eluded us. But we could make a guess to what the answer should be.
Thanks for this Cache!

As it is international eartcache day it was clear that a earthcache had to be solved. Luckily we are in the very best region for earthcaches with all the geotermal activity here. We enjoed the Terraces nearly without tourists and than found the correct anwers, which were send by Pratchettfan for both of us. Thanks for this cache!
Thanks for all the info about this area. Went over on the ferry - the most amazing scenery. Thank goodness for digital photography!!! TFTC
Thanks for giving me all this info. Caught ferry over and saw the most amazing scenery. TFTC
Well, this is a first for me...DNF'ing an earthcache. The cache description (with all the formating and photographs) completely overwhelmed my Garmin 64. I could read part of the cache description, but it kept hopping over the part with the questions to answer. I tried to gather enough information in hopes that when I got back to the hotel, I would have enough to log the cache. But after reading the questions, it is clear that I do not have everything needed to log the cache.
In sunshine we drove off in the morning in Tauranga and arrived in the evening in the rain Taupo.
In between there was a lot to discover.
Here we sat over the lake with the last boat of the day and expected an exciting, bubbling, colorful "landscape".

Enjoyed our second wander around Orakei Korako, our first with Feetlet in tow. A lot more stairs than we remember (perhaps due to a heavy toddler in the backpack?). Answers sent through, thankyou for the cache.
We have been here before but not for a while and we wish we could have stayed longer and crossed over on the boat but there was only time for a quick stop off on our way back to Auckland after a weekend in Taupo.
We will be back again sometime soon when we have more time to explore and take in the magic and history of this unique place.

Down from Auckland to find this earthcache, a traditional called The Squeeze and a virtual nearby. Enjoyed finding the answers to this one. The people running the visitors centre we friendly and helpful. We went across to take a closer look at the thermal area. It's well worth a look. Loved the mud pools there. Thanks YuGeo4.
Found this cache together with my family (Sibuk and Finn). For details see the log of Sibuk.
Thanks for the cache, Lupid
Thanks for the cache, Lupid
Today Lupid and I visited Orakei Korako. We took the ferry across the lake and walked around the wonders of nature for quite some time. Although it was very hot today we went wherever we could and ecplored every place. Our little one crawled part of the way, the remaining time he served as additional body heater
Afterwards we had a little drink and icecream and tried to find the answers for this EC - before suddem heavy rain made us leave.
Thanks for creating the EC and greetings from Germany, Sibuk

Visiting Orakei Korako was the first activity of the day and after driving from our farm stay airbnb near Kinloch we took the ferry to the other side (and yes we did pay the ferryman) and walk and gawk at the thermal wonders, we managed to see the Sapphire Geyser erupt and I was particularly taken with the boiling mud.
Thanks for the EC

Thank you for setting this earthcache. We were visiting this geothermal valley today and fortunately looked to see if there were any caches here along the way, which meant we realised our GPS did not show any of the questions we had to answer!!! This is becoming more and more of a problem for us long-time cachers who rely purely on GPSr and hate having to use our phones to cache (especially as we’re from the UK and it costs so much). So be it. We stopped where we had a good phone signal and wrote down the questions ahead of arriving at the site. We very much enjoyed our boat ride over the lake and the walk around the various terraces, geysers, mud pools and cave. A fascinating place to visit. Answers sent and we’re hopeful of finding a good enough wi-fi connection at a campsite to upload our photo very soon. TFTC.
I found this cache together with my partner, Pityulino, during our holiday in New Zealand. Today we visited Orakei Korako to admire its geothermal wonders. What a great day and experience. Thank you and greetings from Hungary!
I sent the answers to the owner and hope that they are okay.. it was a very interesting place, but we haven't had very good weather conditions, so it was only have as nice it could be.. tftc
After visiting the volcanic fields of Waimangu, we went to Orakei Korako. These terracces are a bit off the beaten track. A friend gave me the tip to go here, otherwise I probably would have missed it. This was lucky, because the terracces are truly spectacular. The wheather however did not like us, which lead to the pictures not really representing the colours. But I don't want to complain. I was here with abenteuerjuli. Thank you for the earthcache

A challenge of mine for a while now has been to find 10 cache types in one day, and this has been a bit of a waiting game as the only webcam cache I hadn't found has been disable due to technical difficulties for a while, but I'll get to that when I log that cache. So with the plan having been in the works for a while all that was needed was a date, and being CITO weekend we thought it was the perfect time to give it a crack.
As Kiwis69 had mentioned the quantity of caches near home for me is minimal so this was going to be a pretty big day with some massive km's being traveled. First leg of the trip was up to Auckland, which meant a 3.30am start to get back to Hamilton in time for the CITO. Leg two was a trip to Tauranga for the webcams and leg three was through Rotorua then to Orakei for the Virtual cache, then back to Hamilton for a 6pm event to round out the 10 types. All up about 750kms of driving!!
So along with Kiwis69 and 11HPG11 we set off on our EPIC day of caching.
As we had a little bit of time left we thought we'd take the small detour and check out this place while we were nearby. What a neat place!! I will have to make a return trip here when I have more time to explore the other side. Gathered the required answers before heading back home. Thanks for showing us this great place.

Joined forces with HKCB & 11hpg11 to find 10 different cache types today. Because HKCB has already cleared out every cache vaguely near home, it soon became clear that, for the three of us to fulfill this challenge together, would necessitate quite a bit of travel (~ 700km!) and a spot of kayaking ... gulp... and hence the plan saw us leave Hamilton at 3.30 am to head to Auckland, back to Hamilton by 8am for a CITO & to collect kayaks before heading to Tauranga, Rotorua & Lake Ohakuri, with the aim of being back in Hamilton by 6pm for our 10th cache type. Totally ridiculous but a whole lot of fun!
We were lucky to have good weather for our kayak trip and then our visit here .. in fact, can't think of a better way to get away from all the noise about the election today (yes, voted early to be caching instead!) Not enough time to get the boat across to the terraces today, but enjoyed walking around collecting info for the cache. Answers emailed to CO & pic attached, thanks for bringing us here, TFTC

We have found this one during our geotrip to China and New Zealand. We have enjoyed our 10 day stay in New Zealand a lot, especially its beautiful nature and atmosphere. Many thanks for the cache and also for showing us this nice place. Greetings from the Czech Republic.
I will provide the answers in few days. In the meantime, a note here as a "placeholder".
Had stayed in Taupo for the express reason to do the thrill seeking Bungy and tandem parachute jump in one day.
As we finished early afternoon we thought a more sedate afternoon at Orakei Korako was in order and of course the Earthcache here was an added bonus.
We made the find to all the answers and submitted these to YuGeo4. They have given us the go ahead to log this cache.
We have attached the photo of team NZTravellers in from of the terrace. I believe you can still see the adrenaline cursing through Mr and Miss NZT veins from that morning activities!
Thanks for this earthcase YuGeo4!!

It has been many many years since either Mr or Mrs S visited this place and since we were out caching close by, because it was too windy as usual to go boating and fishing, we decided we would head on over this way and do this Earth Cache. It didn't take us too long to figure out the answers we needed and get the requisite photo and as we were leaving Mr S pointed out a geyser that started erupting up the hill. Wow, an awesome special extra to an interesting afternoon.
Thanks YuGeo4 for bringing us back to this amazing place and for permission to log.

We visited these "stinky pools" too during our holiday in New Zealand. Nice place to see and not as crowded as some other geothermal places we saw in NZ. Thanks for the earth cache.
This was an EarthCache day as out of geocaches that I found together with Lady Murazor most were EarthCaches, however a few traditional ones also happened. After visiting and walking around all the scenic areas I feel a bit (or maybe more) tired, but I am really happy that I managed to go to the antipodes to see that all.
Another fine natural wonder seen today!
Thank you for this cache and greetings from Kraków, Poland.

At World’s End – New Zealand – One of our dream become true.
Our plan was to stay 4 weeks in New Zealand. But this wasn’t this easy to manage at work. So we moved spontanic the plan from march to november. We informed us before about point of interessts. The list was this long so we decided to go by campervan from the north to the south to have the most mobility. We arrived after way to much hours in Auckland and started there our round trip. At first we enjoyed the area in auckland and the north. In Waitomo we were able to see and enjoy glohworms in one of the famous caves. But this area had a lot of nice hiking trails were we could discovered the Piripiri Caves, Natural Bridge and the Marokopa Falls. This was already impressive to see and still the beginning of our adventure for life. The trip went on over Okere Falls Scenic Reserve direction Rotorua. In this area we enjoyed each hour, because each corner was different. We visited the Haumurana Springs – what amazing water -, Blue Lake and Green Lake and relaxed in Kerosene Creek. We liked all the water and in our travel guide we found a hike cloth to the Huka Falls, which ofcourse we did as well. All this flowers were bloom. One oft the Highlights was Wai-O-Tapu. The weather was perfect and all this colors awesome and the geysir a nice shower. By Campercan the to tour went on direction Tongariro Alpine with a short stop at Orakei Korako and the Tongariro River Loop Track. Lu like nice hiking tours and what could be the best for her birthday? Of course the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing. We started early in the morning and walked approximately 9 hours over gras, stones, snow and colorful water. Now we had to leave the Heart of North New Zealand and went over Taranaki Falls to the East Coast with the goal Napier. The weather was cloudy and often raining but a small sightseeing was a must have. The last stop on the North Irland was Wellington. But it was only raining and some streets were already flooded. That’s why we change spontanic our plan and only did the First Cache of New Zealand and went by ship over the Marlboro Sound to Picton. We went over Farewell Spit to the lonely Wharariki Beach with sea lions. On the way back to the big streets we stopped at Waikoropupu Spring and Janie Sesson Shipwreck and drove untypical to Karamea. In Germany we do not have this much and public caves and that’s way we enjoyed this area! Cloth to the West Coast we took a look at the Pancake Rocks. The weather was just raining and so we could not see the Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, but we still visited them. We leaved the bad weather in the hills and enjoyed the Sun at Ship Creek, Thunder Creek, Fantail Falls and the Blue Pools. Wow they were relly blue and this clean and deep. I never saw something similar before. About Wanaka we read a lot in our travel guide and looked forward to it. There arrived we visited the Puzzling World and walked around the sea. Queenstown the next town we drove just through because at this time there was a marathon and it was really campervan unfriendly. So we used the time and drove to Milford Sound and enjoyed the hills surround us on the water. I never felt this small. After we are landed again on land the trip goes on to the Chasm and Clifden Caves and the Clifden Suspension Bridge. Wow what an adventure. At the end we visited a few cities like Bluff, Duneding, Moeraki Boulders and Christchurch were our Trip sadly ends.
At all this places we looked for nice and unique caches which shows us places which we never would had seen without. We enjoyed the nature and wildlife each day and it was really an adventure for life. At the end we drove approximately 5000 kilometeres and felt this relaxed.
Thanks to all owners for placing this caches and this much informations which we got about the particular areas. This was an adventure for life for us. Thanks for this beauty time.

Nice stroll along the path after taking the "ferry" accross. Lots of steps at times but well worth it.

I saw these terraces for the first time on a photo published in a french guide of New Zealand but without indications about the location. when fefe.adrien and I discovered finally where it takes place, we waited for a good opportunity (and weather) to get there.
Yes it is done thanks to this earthcache !
Exactly what we expected, we spent a lovely afternoon for taking photos of this amazing natural process.

A nice easy drive south for the mega event, this made a good leg stretcher, just as we got out the heavens opened and it poured down, took refuge in the nearby shelter and had a good look around.
My first stop in the Rotorua region, and my first experience with geothermal pools. Some amazing sights here! I love the Maori tradition of tourism. It has been a theme in several of the places I have visited. Answers to the questions on the way. Thanks for the cache!
Great place, took the ferry across. Had a great day. Thanks for taking us there.

Very cool location! I am always intrigued by geothermal activity. We had just visited the park and were driving away when I discovered the cache option and turned around to drive back for the logging photos. Thank you for the earth cache info! So sad about the damage....
For some reason my photos seem to be an uploading problem so no photos.

Wow! What an amazing place this is! We're visiting NZ from England, and this was a 'must see' destination. We really enjoyed finding out about this incredible landscape. Answers have been emailed and approved by CO - thank you so much for setting this cache. Favourite point awarded.
Great listing but to much for the Garmin device. Text ends just before the questions. Couldn't solve it.
Wow. Heute besuchten wir Orakel Korako und waren von der Landschaft, dem Geysir und den Mud Pools begeistert. We love NZ. TFTC Greenfield7 (Switzerland)
Already in the morning it was very hot here. We had a fantastic walk seeing all the terraces and made a lot of photos. We are glad we drove to this amazing place.

Visited on a beautiful summer's day. An area that I have not previously made the detour to, so was happy to have an excuse on this occasion.

Orakei Korako is not the biggest geothermal site in the Taupo Volcanic zone, but it is nice to discover the terraces and the lake. And it is less crowded than other sites.

Rotorua would have to be earthcache capital. No matter which road you take there's something naturally amazing happening that takes away all thoughts of modern times. This is another of those places and it's great to see there won't be anything to interfere with it in the future. With our answers found we continued on the next Rotorua phenomenon. TFTEC YuGeo4.
