Argh! My target for the day! After starting at Ilam I went behind and over Bunster Hill before descending to the dreaded "Pancake Limestone" crossing of the mighty river... currently being negotiated successfully by small dogs and children. A few keener hikers not interested in the queue simply ploughed across the creek on foot splashing all the way. That's the spirit! While I was waiting my turn and taking photos I averaged out an altitude reading to assist in calculating the accent from here to the summit, then it was off!
A short huff and puff later and I was there a lot faster then I thought I would be. Silly silly people trying to walk down the grass instead of sticking to the path made me cringe but there were no falls I witnessed thank goodness. At the top I bumped into a friendly fellow and chatted while I took a second altitude average reading, more photos and fossil hunted. Didnt turn up any of the latter as the summit was crawling with muggles by now but I did get some top pics on this awesome Spring day.
From here it was back down to polish off the SOTL caches on route towards my van and tick another box of the D/T graph on my stats. Email answers away and a Favourite Point awarded here, top stuff!
Cheers from Australia!

We set off from the Izaak Walton hotel with no clear goal - should we climb Thorpe Cloud or go for the caches in northern Dovedale? Without a footpath map, Thorpe Cloud didn't really seem like the sensible choice.... but..... when we saw a signpost from the stepping stones, and what LOOKED like a clear footpath to the summit, we just couldn't resist - well it was the nearest cache!
The clear footpath soon gave way to a muddy track - but 'encouraged' by the other foolhardy walkers on the descent ('if you think it's slippery on the way up just wait 'til you try coming down!' were their words of wisdom) we finally reached the summit - and so did the mist. Or was it low cloud?
I'm sure the view is fantastic on a clear day (it's been lovely looking back through all the other photos on the cache page) but there's something quite magical in being on a summit in low cloud with the remains of snow on the ground and total silence all around. We actually loved it, Glad that we took a few waypoints on the way up though, otherwise we might have gone round in misty circles on the descent!
Thanks PuP, fab cache!

Returned to Dovedale a few days after our previous trip. This time we saved enough energy to attempt the climb to Thorpe Cloud. And my goodness, did we need all our energy? It's a long way up! On the way up we waved at friends of ours who looked like ants down in the valley. (We had bumped into each other half an hour before - a surprise since we each assumed the other family were at home in West Sussex.) The visibility could have been better, but at least the cloud lifted enough to give us some kind of view from the top.
