The Grampians are starting to thin out for me now, with only 19 caches left spread far and wide. This one had been left for some time with the idea it was a big hike and quiet long.

Caught up with Anikano today, and after a morning hike at Boronia Peak, we decided to go for this one with the unloved. Well, I didn't read the cache page properly and just put it in the GPS and drove. Well, let's just say that was a quiet road in, and the car now has a few new pin stripes!

We did the walk through the dense undergrowth, until it cleared out and we reached the scree pile. Damn! Where the hell to start?! I picked up a rock, and there was the cache! Talk about luck! Well that was easy! We took in the views and surrounding peaks, then with confidence set off to the reverse WP. Well, a lot longer searching here, with no luck whatsoever. Ahwell, GZ was found, that's the main thing! Pretty sure only 1 Demath cache left now. More please?
Thanks for the cache, loved it, a fave from me!

This is the kind of cache I was hoping for in coming to the Grampians today. A bit of bush bashing and scrambling and some 4WDriving. I think the intention of this cache was probably to have people make a short hike to the cache. However, Jacko83s 4WD made quick work of the track leaving us with only 200m to walk to GZ. Luckily Jacko83 made a quick find at the first WP by fluke or we would have been there for hours! Not so lucky at the next stop to find this reverse multi in finding the cache (and even unluckier for me when I put my hand on a rock of bull ants - ouch!). Amazing views and fun searching regardless. Definite favourite from me. Thank you Smile

Finally found it Smile

I contacted the cache owner who confirmed he had been there since I was there last time, and the cache was still there. He also gave a couple of hints. It still took about an hour to find, though.

The walk in was pleasant until it left the 4wd track - it then became quite scratchy. Foolishly (on two counts) I was wearing shorts rather than trousers. Firstly, because of the scratches. Secondly, because
it was cold and windy up top, and very soon began to rain. I was not properly prepared weather-wise, and my hands in particular soon started to get very cold even with my (light) jumper on and a beanie. The rain was nigh on horizontal and really stung on impact at times. It did dry up for a while, enabling me to keep on searching.

The view was very nice - some good interplay of sunlight and drifting clouds/rain, especially down towards Mirranatwa.

Like last time, I wandered back and forth over the mountain top. This time the coords seemed a little more stable, and kept leading back to approximately the same place (which turned out to be within 4 or 5m of cache location). I thought up all sorts of possible camo (moss-covered cache, cache deep in a gap between rocks with stick attached for retrieval, fake fern etc...) but it was none of those. Quite a few spots I checked multiple times - so many spots that looked plausible.

Finally I said to myself that I would have to give up if it started raining much again. I found the cache just in time, as it started raining as I was trying to sign the log. Very happy to have found it.

Then I started off to the split rock for the second cache, though I wasn't sure if it was a good idea trying to find the second cache as I was cold and wet. Got about 30m towards the split rock, when I started thinking instead of just doing. Realised I didn't need to go to the split rock (I never saw the thing), and instead turned off my phone and headed towards a likely cache location. Spotted the cache from quite a distance - once you've found the first one, the second stands out like a sore thumb, and is exactly where you would expect it.

The way back was even more painful. My legs were cold, but they were very obviously not cold enough to be numb Big Grin
I was very happy to get out of that scrub, and possibly even happier to turn on the heater in my car and drive away.

All that pain obviously makes it worthy of a favourite point Razz.
I think this is by far the longest I have searched for a cache for... about 2 hours total I guess.

Well over 2 years unloved this was my main target cache for today as I only had limited time away from Portland so didn't want to tackle anything too adventurous. So many hiding places and none I could find that held a cacheSad

I managed to get up to the cache with a little difficulty - initially didn't follow the ridge-line and it was painful. Anyway, I think the scrub is in a few places more than just "light" - though it definitely is scratchy (not to mention prickly).

Once I got to the top, I then hunted and hunted for the cache. The scree squeaked and scratched under foot as I roamed over the mountain. The GPS on my phone kept leading me round the top of the mountain, from side to side and back and forth, but I couldn't find anything.
Tried approaching from a number of different angles and it seemed to point pretty much at the top of the mountain - but couldn't find anything. Hunted for over an hour and finally, reluctantly, gave up. Wasn't sure exactly what the initial cache container looked like, and there were no hints - so I could have just missed it, not sure. Certainly lots of potential hiding places around.

Anyway, nice hike and good views, and the scree-covered mountain top was certainly a change. Thanks for the cache.

We noticed this cache hadn't been found for quite a while which made us decide that an attempt was overdue.
Interestingly we could have drven to within about 220 metres of GZ as the track was open and in reasonable condition. However we decided that the exercise would do us good so we walked in.

Once leaving the track the walk through the bush kept us on our toes but we eventually made our way to GZ. The caching Gods were looking after me today and I was the one lucky enough to spot the hide after a few minutes. Thank goodness, because the terrain at GZ would suit mountain goats much more than us Razz

The cache is still in excellent condition.....I wish all caches were that good Big Grin We added a pic of my ugly mug to the SD card, read the details in the log book and decided to spend a few minutes trying for the satellite cache.

We added the info and were then on our way to the next waypoint......feeling very smug when it was quickly foundRazz We made some calculations, deciding that there were probably 2 options for GZ and decided that we still had enough energy left to try for 1 of them. We plotted a coarse then scrambled around for quite a while til the stars aligned checking out many possibilities (and there are thousandsTwisted.
No luckSad. We regrouped, recalculated, replotted, rescrambled, staggered and reeled for an hour over all and still came up empty handed.....and that was after checking out only the first of our 2 possibilities. After that we decided in the words of Detective Murtaugh in 'Lethal Weapon'.....'We're getting too old for this s...'[:o)] and made our weary way back to the geomobile.

The CO has kept us very busy in the last few weeks hiking through the Grampians....we have been taken to some truly stunning places but today's hike and GZ were the icing on the cake. I can't imagine this cache ever getting muggled....how on earth did the CO himself ever find this place? The views were superb and the weather equally so. We had a ball....again demath and we thank you so much for all your clever hides at awe inspiring places. Yep....there goes another favourite point and we left another pathtag in the cache.[^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^][^]

What a brilliant walk. Hard as it was coming up from the eastern side. We loved every bush bashing step. My absolute favourite cache to date. Loved the SD idea and the effort made re the hides. Thanks demath, you made my caching trip to the Grampians.

Went up the wrong side with the Bushman (aka one half of The GGGs) in the lead. One of my favourites, thanks for the effort demath.

We tackled this from the Eastern Side & what a challenge it was, however the effort was well worth while. Having only started Geocaching in the last few days, this has definitely been my favorite of the 30 we have done in the past 4 days. Thanks Demath for the effort you put into the caches you have made.

This was a nice walk up the hill. I did both caches and both had a local resident (gecko and huntsman). After the wet weather there is some serious overgrowth which makes the last metres quite ... well interesting.

well what a challenge dont think this rating in terrains was real good but we made it. The challenge was rewarded with a first to find of the first part.

would not recommend this for anyone not really fit or good at bushwalking
