Here in the land of the king white cloud to attend the mega in Dunedin. Many thanks to all those involved in the organisation! Today we targeted some of the DT puzzles plus a few unusual caches as extras. Much better weather and some scary roads . Travelling and caching as a group Qld+1. Cheers ps must always get a cemetar cache, my most favourite

This is day four of my Dunedin Mega trip (and IS the actual date of the mega, despite some previous logs to the contrary), the first time I've ever been here before (never mind geocaching). Obviously with such a plethora of caches to find there's going to be plenty I'll skip but I hope to find my targets.Unfortunately logging is going to be generic, but thank you to all the cache owners and event organisers for the things you do.Doing a loop with barefootguru, CrystalFairy and GreenGecko. Logs signed as BBCG.All good here, and thank you to Bitsprayer for the placement of your Traditional Cache.Find #7324 at 27 October 2024 2:31pm

Day 4 of my 6 day trip to Dunedin to attend the Mega and clean up all the puzzle caches solved over the last few years.Todays journey took us to the Mega to meet up with a few cachers and then hit the BT81 series before heading back to Dunedin. Thanks for all the puzzles, caches, find, frustration and enjoyment.Spent the day with BFG, Bruzie and GreenGecko1. Logged at combinations of BBGC.Loved the location and views from here.. Not a throw me down cache. FP awarded.

Day 3 of our Dunedin Mega visit. Teamed up with gonefishing for a most enjoyable weekend. Some logs were signed with our separate names, some were signed 'Team bogo' to save space. Today we're heading to Lake Mahinerangi. Enjoyed being out in the countryside. Thanks to everyone involved for putting on a great Mega Event, and also to all the local Cache Owners for placing and maintaining all their caches.Cheers and TFTC

Day 3 in New Zealand Lovely little spot Have attended the mega site now picking up D/Ts My first overseas trip ever started off eventful with my tree fishing pole joining me in Brisbane after deciding not to travel on my flight. Virgin staff made up for their boo boo, so my adventure could continue stress free but making for a long day Day 1 involved my first FTF in another country, another webcam under my belt, a few virtuals and a couple of favourites. Thanks Bitsprayer for placing this Traditional for me to convert into a smilie

My lovely SO offered to take me out for a drive somewhere so I said how about over to Lake Mahinerangi, haven't been that way for years - he didn't need to guess my geocaching ulterior motive.
Home time, dusk falling, but couldn't resist stopping for an old cemetery cache. Cache took a bit of finding, signal was all over the place and there are lots of hint objects so that didn't help much, but after giving up on the app and having a methodical search ... easily turned up the container, in good condition but log book is quite damp. Interesting cenotaph at location. Had a quick walk around the cemetery grounds to read some stones - beautifully kept grounds with a beautiful view over the lake, and there's a nice new-looking info station at the entrance with some interesting history worth reading. Enjoyable find. Tftc.

#10,441. I did a bit of a diversion on my way to Invercargill from Dunedin. Yes its the road less travelled to reach that wondrous southern centre of hospitality and sophistication. The lure of some challenge caches and a virtual or 2 pulled me away from the mainstream. Its extremely windy up here today but very warm and sunny. I am from Wellington and even by our standards this wind is up there in the blasting stakes. Hold on to your hats!!

Parked close by and wandered over to the memorial. Always amazed how many families in remote areas were affected by the World Wars. Such a waste of promising young lives in distant lands. Humans need to learn to live together, not die together. The cache was soon found in its snug hidey hole. Signed the logbook and replaced the container where found. Thanks Bitsprayer for hiding it here.

A nice easy one after swimming in the lake for the last one. Nearly warmed up now.

TFTC - heading home from Naseby via Lake Mirhingerangi with NZ Bozzy for some caching fun. Found most of the caches that we wanted today. Thanks for bringing us to this area. Was on my 'bucket' list as I had not been over this way before

Am visiting Dunedin and spending a day geocaching in areas of my childhood and student days is looking like becoming an annual event. Out with gdkja. Really interesting place. Took a bit of scrambling around but easy when you know where . Took tb. All good here, log dry. Thanks CO for the suggestion to come here. we even stopped here for lunch as we were out of the wind. Looked around graves.

Found with StreetWalkerNZ on day 8 of our extended Easter break, today we are travelling from Clyde to Dunedin via Lake Mahinerangi on a beautiful Anzac day.
A vehicle followed us down to the parking area, but the occupants were visiting the cemetery itself so were well away from GZ. SW overshot GZ but I spotted a suss rock and after moving it, found the cache. Interesting location. TFTC.

We are at the top of the world. Lake Mahinerangi is just a silvery mass via moonlight way down over there and ots of sparkly stars in the sky. Park on the concrete pad and the headlights highlight a sign board. Well just have to check it out. So with our trusty night vision equip and an extra layer of clothing I go checkit out. The Seagnoid moves on early to snag and tag this one. Its 7.30pm so past time for dinner and I am hungry. Drag the camp stove out for delicious vege noodle soup, compliments of The Seagnoid. Its then back on the road to find our way back to Mosgiel. Stopped off at one place to get our bearings and a truck stops with local hunters, happy to give us some welcome advice, just as The Seagnoid got his tecky thing sorted to also sort us out. Grabbed some giggle juice for Toby in Mosgiel and its homeward bound. Finally arrived ar Zara at 9.30 for some well earned ZZZZZZ's. Good night. Its been an amazing day.

Its Wednesday 24 April and we are off exploring Milburn, Lawrence and Lake Mahinerangi today. Awesome!!

Its another awesome geoventure to Dunedin, with The Seagnoid, Zara, Toby, Jack, Jill and William all along for the trip. Had a wonderful 10 days exploring Dunedin. It was great catching up with local cachers at several events we attended. Lots of walking and driving, with the odd cycle and wave ride to jazz things up. Thanks to all the COs that made this trip a wonderful success. Even managed to bag some lab caches along with wherigos, earth caches and events, with the usual mix taking us to some amazing places..

24-Apr-19
Stopped here for dinner and to find the cache. Parked up on the nice concrete platform, got the billy out. Nice night, so we ate outdoors, inbetween finding the cache. Last cache for the day. Back to Dunedin.

Taybeedragon and I have an eleven day Easter weekend in Dunedin. Although, let's face it, given that we are from Blenheim and Picton that means two of those days was spent in travelling. In that time we grabbed a smidge over three hundred caches. Not bad, considering the amount of time spent way out on the back roads, on bicycles or canoeing on the water. A few virtuals, larges, letterboxes, earths, wherigos, and even ten lab caches in the haul. An awesome weekend!

20-Apr-19
A quick and easy find. There was a group camping down the way so I am glad the coordinates were a bit out. Cheers

Easter holidays, and a road trip to Milford Sound. Today we drove from Dunedin to Invercargill with lovely weather most of the day till we reached the south coast.

Thanks to all CO's for placing and maintaining their caches. Cheers

I had just completed the Livestock challenge doen the road and really felt that this one should have been called that as I had to drive slowly through all the sheep and had several running madly in front of me along the way. Yet another facinating piece of history here - first New Zealander killed at Gallipoli from a tiny place like this. Lovely views out across the water from up here. TFTC # 13,611

explained to some of the locals what geocaching was about, they were relatives of the land owner and creator of the monument, they knew exactly where the cache was and were happy to look after the cache site.

Trying to reach 1000 before the end of the year. Not going for the easy park and grabs around town, want to have some fun and roadtrips to get the numbers up, Today went from Dunedin to Waipori to Lee Flat.

When we approached saw signs up advertising a reunion of decendants of people who are laid here. When we got the GZ a woman approached us and said are you here see family and I said no always find cemeteries have the nicest of views and that was accepted. When left grabeed cache.

Cache container and log in good condition.

Then the grandson of the peron who build this monument came over and told us the history of his uncle (first NZ man reported back home dead during first world war) and of the gold finds of the area.

13-Dec-15
Down in Dunedin for the weekend to visit family and to attend graduation, but was able to get away to target a few certain caches while I was down here. Headed out with the brother In law this afternoon with three specific caches on the list to find and whatever else we come across on our journey we have time to find, as we have a bit of ground to cover this afternoon.

After locating the nearby Virtual Cache we had a little time spare to find a few others in the area. Thanks for showing us this neat bit of history, cache easily spotted. Thanks for the hide.

I had booked flights for a day trip to Dunedin today - the weather was lovely so I decided to drive to Lake Mahinerangi - it must be 25 yrs since I've been here and it was a great opportunity to explore.
1st stop the Cemetery - my business partner's wife has forebears here - Atkinson, Cotton - it was good to look around & pay my respects.
Thanks, Bitsprayer - the cache was a major incentive to come here.

Hey, woof... JC Cache Dawg here...

Im loading all my finds from my Alpha Males (aka GenCuster) logs, where he deigned to remember that I was with him... As if he could forget...15:55

15:55 JC Cache Dawg unwillingly stayed in the van due to seeing rabbits and with his known 'deaf ears' syndrome in such a situation. What a peaceful spot! Cached with Respect. Worth the backtrack from the ol' stamping grounds Wink Surprised to see a few above ground residences there too. Cheers, GC.

As in Australia, I just approached this the way I would there. Shut the gates behind you.. drive slowly.. etc.

No signs of life (so to speak) near GZ. I made my way in and started the hunt. It took me about 10 minutes of looking around before I found the well-hidden beast. It was found by a muggle at some stage - but they have treated the cache with respect.

A very nice area and well worth visiting. It has never snowed on me while I cached before - so this was a first for me (Queenslanders from Australia are easily amused by snow Razz).

The cache was in good condition. I have posted up the co-ordinates that worked for me today. TFTC Bitsprayer Smile

I wasn't sure about driving down through the paddock, but I've been yelled at by experts so off I went. Dry conditions, leave gates as you find them and stick to the track.
I should really have had a better look around but it was a cold wind. Thanks.

Have uploaded some maps of Waipori Township and a photo of the town from Cemetery Hill.

An interesting website with info on Waipori is Kae Lewis/ Dave Still Goldrush Online http://www.kaelewis.com/Waipori/Waipori.htm
and for info on the Hydro Scheme Infratil – Waipori Centenary http://www.infratil.com/our-news/infratil-news/2007/trustpower-sustainability-celebrated-at-waipori-centenary/

On the Knight Family Monument is a plaque to Wilfred Victor Knight, 1st Bn A.I.F. , Born Waipori 6/4/1890, First New Zealander reported killed in action on Gallipoli in the Great War 1914 -1918. A.I.F.? Yes, he served in the Australian Imperial Force.

Look in the bottom southwest corner of the cemetery for the grave of Richard Atkinson, who died 31 December 1865 aged 45. On 23 December 1865 Richard, father-in-law of the owner of “The Diggers Rest” Accommodation House, was standing on a chair hanging up a piece of corned beef when he was stabbed by itinerant miner John Jones. When his daughter Margaret Dickson tried to save her father, she was stabbed in the hip.

I originally found this as part of the dakotacats team but I have my own username now so I am re-logging as whiskasnz. Thanks.

Found it : 05/Aug/2012 : We couldn't drive all the way down to the cache site, the local farmer had decided to put a fence across the roadway leading down the hill. Oh well, the 500 meter walk did us all the world of good! We collected pinecones on the way back to the car. Surprised to see a couple of new houses built on either side of the cemetery. A remote place to live I would imagine. TFTC

'This way to the cemetery' the sign said as we set off across the field to our destination.
Didn't get far before we encountered an electric fence across our path and the ground becoming quite soft. "All out" and off we went down to the 'place of no return'. We found the hidden cache after a short walk and after inspecting some memorial plaques it was off up the hill to our car. There is little sign now of the township that was once here, but it all went underwater when the dam was filled..... drowned for the sake of progress.

What a remote area for living but there was evidently an attraction up here in the early days.
Drove down the track and saw the cache as I was coming down, the wind must of caught it and dislodged it, signed and replaced with the rocks to secure it (hopefully)
It was a bonus to find this today away from all the muggles down by the water.
Thanks

It's taken years of trying to get this area polished off but I've finally managed it. It took a sneaky wee side trip while driving to camp to achieve this, but it was able to be quickly done.

Did a little detour to this one. Intrigued to see that most of the roads here abouts can be shut off with deer gates at times. We had to back track to get around one at one point! A very remote location for a cemetery - guess there was a settlement here at some point.
