Coming back from teaching in Gisborne - I wanted to stop here to have a blat on my new bike - its been a few years since I had a mountain bike and it was good to get on one again to find my feet (or wheels?) I got so excited about riding I forgot to take a pic of the lake. So yall can have one of me down the road at White Pines reserve instead lol Interesting Earthcache - its fascinating how much change can happen with an extreme weather event. No double similar Earth caches will emerge with the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle too Mihi ki a koe, JNK, mo te keteroki Papatnuku #567
#4211 Today is day 36 of my geocaching vacation in New Zealand. The weather looks nice, and it's warmer as well. Today, my goal is to get a geocache in Gisborne region and make it back before the road closure. Found it! J 'N' K, thank you for the cache! -crystaloops from Taipei, Taiwan on November 5, 2024 @ 12:03:09[GC1ZJB4] Lake Tutira (Hawkes Bay) was a D1.0/T1.0 Other Earthcache at the time of finding.
Day 4 of our epic Auckland to Napier and return caravanning road trip during the school holidays. Staying at the DOC campsite right next to the lake. MiniAG and I left the rest of the family to collect some caches, though not all successful. With miniAG. TFTC
A day trip from Napier to Gisborne to get some East Coast caches towards a Challenge cache in Tasman. I stopped off here on my way back to Napier . Nice to be back here after many a year. Found the information for the Earth Cache and enjoyed the sun going down for a few minutes before resuming my journey. Cheers and TFTC
Totally forgot to log it yesterday.Thank you for the earth cache. It's just unbelievable how much soil was deposited be the rain.
On my way from Gisborne to Napier picking up as many caches as possible in between the targetted geotour and caches required for challenges. I got here at sunset and immediately wished I had my tent and kayak. I'd loved to have been able to stay and go for a paddle. There was a cool breeze and after sitting in the nice warm car it was a shock to be standing by the sign reading while still in shorts and tshirt. Thanks for making me stop in this beautiful spot J 'N' K

Visiting the lake with our grandsons, ages 10 & 13. This was the first earthcache we have ever done with them, and it took a little time to settle them down and understand that it wasn't actually a container that they needed to find. This was great for the boys, clear questions, with clear answers, and such a beautiful spot to enjoy on this stunning autumn day. Thank you for all the work that has gone into setting this one up. Much appreciated.
Taking advantage of this beautiful sunny HB day with a visit to Lake Tutira. Such a lovely place to visit and explore. Interesting read of the cache description & information board and the effects of Cyclone Bola on this area. Enjoyed our time here. Thanks for the cache
Beautiful evening setting up for a night camping, it's the little ones first time! Lovely evening to do an earth cache!
We were up in Hawkes Bay for a few days around Labour Weekend in order to join in some family celebrations. That was the priority but we managed to fit in a little geocaching as we could.
So we accompanied some family for a drive up to Lake Tutira on the Saturday enjoying the scenery and some walks along the way. We only had time for a quick visit to the lake itself but did make it to the Earthcache site where we were able to take photos so we could complete the cache answers later. We've just got this done and submitted our answers.
This was an interesting, straightforward Earthcache at a lovely site well worth a longer visit. Thank you for bringing us here J 'N' K

We had planned on calling in to lake tutira on the way home from gisbourne,
On reaching the required information we gathered the answers and learned a lot about the lake and the surrounding area.

Making our way to Napier this morning. We stopped here for lunch and then had the bonus of finding four caches in the area. An interesting earth cache, especially the info on how the lake was formed and then how it remained. I remember, back in the day, flying a TV crew into Wairoa during cyclone Bola so they could film the missing bridge on SH2 into the town.

We weren't expecting to venture so far north of Napier today, but we had been here before so decided to push up the coast for lunch. A kayak fisherman was out enjoying the day, and a few campers came in to stay for the night. Picked up a few caches in the area, but didn't take the time today to climb for the higher peaks. Answers to the questions on their way. TFTEC
Have been past this spot many times but no one around today so had time to have a good nosey.Had no idea how much the level had risen-thanks for making me read this!
Completed this cache after night had descended. After quite a creepy walk to the sign at the GZ in the pitch black I hurried back to my campervan and completed the cache. What an interesting place and history. TFTC
Changing to a find now I've sent the answers through to the CO. A fabulous day to drive out here with my parents, who enjoyed reading the information, and then had a very pleasant time sitting by the lake watching the swans and their cygnets. A lovely spot, and it's sobering to realise how much devastation the cyclone caused (well before I came to NZ).
Thanks for taking the trouble to set up this earthcache.

Cache # 4,881 - a lovely spot that we visited on our way to Gisborne. Stopped the car near the sign (unintentionally, as we are looking for caches when we stop, on the journey, rather than aiming for them). This added a whole new dimension to what CelloJoss and I were seeing. Thanks for an interesting earthcache! Answers sent to CO.
Shared this experience today with The Wandering Dragons. Lovely spot, interesting history. Thanks!
On the way to Napier, a few stops here and there.
There are some campers here.
Well, what a devastation this cyclone caused!

Thanks J 'N' K for the geocache [^]

On a sunny winter's day Lake Tutira was definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed our walk around the lake. Thanks for leading us here.
Off on a 5 day mission from Northland to the East Coast with the main target being the last two CANZ caches that I had not yet found. The opportunity to grab some $25 airfares to Napier was just too good to miss, even though it was winter and the days might be short and the weather might be dodgy.
Day one though was a real mission, with early morning fog for the drive to Auckland, untold time navigating the long Akl parking lots, delayed flights before we took off and then again in the air before we could land causing a missed connection for the rental cache mobile pick up. To top it off, the weather was cold and wet, but I still managed to find four caches in the dark.
Day three dawned a bit better with no rain and the promise of some sunshine later in the day for our trip northward from Napier up to Gisborne. Stopped off here to look for some trads and to complete this earthcache. Amazing to learn how much debris has ended up in the lake.

Day 5 of our NZ trip, and heading to Napier today. Great stop along the way! TFT Earth cache. Greetings from
On our way from Napier to Gisborne, D4nielB and me took the time to look for some geocaches on our route.
We hadn't planned to go to Lake Tutira but the detour for this earth cache was really worth it. Great place. D4nielB already sent our answers to the CO.
Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.

On our way from Napier to Gisborne Jul1ane and me came past this earth cache at a place we would have missed without it. After enjoying the beautiful area, we gathered the information required for this earth cache and drove on.
We needed a rest stop between Gisborne and Napier and this was at just the right spot. I'd checked to see what geocaches might be coming up on our journey but hadn't stored any offline (apart from around where we were staying). Fortunately I read up a bit on this earthcache earlier. When the decision was made to stop at Tutira I decided we drive through to the campground and find a nice shady spot to park and rest. I remembered enough of the cache description to find the right objects to take photos of. We enjoyed our rest here although it was hard keeping the kids out of the lake (I didn't want to deal with sore, itchy legs from Duck Itch).
#6496. Decided to have a short holiday on the east coast to enjoy the warm summer weather. The girls have joined me on the road trip. Stayed the night in Waipukurau. Now heading north to Gisborne and stopped here at Lake Tutira to take in the scenery and pick up several caches. Parked nearby and wandered back down to the display board. Some interesting facts about the lake. Had no idea how prone it was to flooding with debris from slips. Gathered the information requested and have sent the answers to the CO. Thanks for setting up the earthcache J'N'K. Always enjoy learning more about the sites I visit.
This was a beautiful DOC camp and so nice to see people using it properly. Answers to questions submitted to owner and thanks for bringing us here for this informative earthcache.
Lovely lake, we have stopped here a few times for lunch, but this time stopped overnight, but didnt have many caches loaded in our machine, and no coverage. But did have the details for this one, very interesting history of the area. Thanks
always wanted to explore this lake. rain cleared as we arrived but break only lasted a short time so we got wet getting back to our vehicle. spotted two large brown trout cruising the shallows while we sheltered under a tree. tftc
It’s amazing which powers nature can develop. The “traces” of the Taifun were impressive!
Thanks for showing this nice quiet place!

Up for some fishing so I toddled off to search for the nearest caches, yes - I remember the devastation of Cyclone Bola. Thanks for the Earthcache J'N'K.
Day 4 - Monday - Wellington to Gisborne. So lets hit the road.
Had to stop off at the cabin at Lake Tutira on our way past. Great place for a break. While here captured the data for this earth cache. Cyclone Bola was certainly distructive. Thanks for the writeup and loved reading the signboards at Lake Tutire. Fav from me. Cheers
The Seagnoid, Zara and I are on another epic caching adventure for the next two weeks, starting with the Wellington Mega, then East Cape, Taraunga, Waihi, Rotorua and back to Wellington. Its been an awesome journey, over 2500 klms later, visiting many amazing places. Thanks to all COs

One week off during school holiday time, combined with some cheap flights made a great adventure in the HB and Gisborne area, popping into BoP a couple of times also. I had great fun and I am grateful to all CO's who placed the caches for others' entertainment!!
Great area to stop in on the way south! TFTC!!
Great area to stop in on the way south! TFTC!!
I don't think anyone who was in New Zealand in 1988 will forget Cyclone Bola, it certainly was a vicious event. Mind you there are now increasing numbers of significant rain events and everywhere we went in this part of the North Island we could see damage caused by excess water. - - Slips and slumps beside roads, buried pastures, piles of logs for example on the Tolaga Bay Beach.
Thanks for the earthcache.
Thanks for the earthcache.
Wish our Apollo rental camper van was actually working properly, so we could’ve freedom camped here for a night - absolutely stunning and so peaceful
Stayed at the campground last night and woke up to such a beautiful and calm lake. Great place and interesting Earthcache. TFTC
A really beautiful, quiet area well worth a visit. Some great tracks, long and short. The caches are nearby. TFTC
Hi there J 'N' K - what a beautiful spot - definitely one of the best I have ever seen! Answers have been sent in to the CO. Thanks to J 'N' K for this cache - our find #5252
I'm from Norway, escaping the cold winter and travelling around New Zealand for 7 weeks, using geocaching as my tourguide. Today I drove from Gisborne to Taupo.
About this cache:
This earthcache looked very interesting, so I decided to stop by here, and I'm glad I did. Really interesting to see the changes here. I would never have noticed it if it wasn't for this cache. Thank you for showing me and thank you for the interesting info. Answers have been approved by co.

Found with Mum as 'Jess & Caro'. She is now Carø and I now have my own geocaching profile so we are sorting my logs for caches we found together. TFTC!
Lake Tutira - GC1ZJB4
Holidaying for a couple of weeks in NZ to do a bit of sight seeing and catch up with family. We have been from Auckland to Tauranga to Hicks Bay, the East Cape and Tolaga Bay and are now heading to Napier! I had planned all along to pull in here and reminisce for a bit as growing up we used to come here camping most years, splash about in the lake, float across on li-los, and do all the silly things kids do. It has changed a lot but still has the serene vibe I remember.
We read the info board and I was surprised at how much change actually happened since my childhood camping trips here. Answers have been sent to the CO.
Thanks for this earthcache, J 'N' K, it is a beautiful area and was quite the eye-opener!

Pulled in here to get the information for this earthcache and I sent the answers to the CO that day. However, five days later I haven't heard back from them with permission to log. Thanks for the interesting lesson and earthcache.
When I drove back past the next day, the lake was shrouded in fog and the monitoring buoy looked as though it was floating in mid air! Tried to capture this in a photo, but it hasn't worked out as successful as I hoped.

Squirrel Nutcase and myself are on a road trip to the Gisborne area chasing caches with a higher D rating for our licence challenge. We visited area 3 months ago and hopefully we will have better success this time and collect anything else on the way. Day 1 was to get there first and day 2 back to Rotorua via Wairoa Napier way.
Logging this cache with permission and Squirrel Nutcase. Amazing to believe the numbers on information panels.

With Gap (of Fap and Gap)... After five months of grief, it's time for another serious attack on our current caching license. We're heading east to target seven high difficulty caches, and anything else that catches our attention...
I remember Cyclone Bola well... I was working as a tour guide at a local attraction, and we had to close down because high winds had toppled a couple of large redwood trees. For weeks after, the streams in the area ran much deeper than usual. As it was still quite warm, we swam a lot during that time...
I was in my late teens then, and the outcomes of this cyclone didn't carry much meaning. But this event obviously did have an impact and a bearing on those who were affected... It's incredible to contemplate how much soil washed off the surrounding hills. I appreciated learning about this event. TFTEC.

On my way towards Napier I came along Lake Tutira and decided spontaneously to pick up some Caches around, because I had time and the area is really nice. After I'd found the drive through Cache at the Arboretum I parked my car at the southern lakeside at went out for a Little stroll. The weather was nice and I really enjoyed the walk and the caches.
Very interesting Earthcache with informations that made me pensive.
Thanks a lot for the Caches.

After a couple of enjoyable, though warm days in Gisborne, we are heading south to Napier and have a list of caches to find en route.
Had a short detour to look at the lake, and to find three caches. Info board was interesting to read and I learned lots about Cylcone Bola. I hadn't realised that it had such an impact in the area.
Logged with permission, TFTC.

#12034. It was very interesting to see how much silt was deposited here by Cyclone Bola. Troodles sent answers on behalf of us both. TFTC.
After arriving to the camp at the end of the afternoon, Ninalila and I went for a walk.
We turned on our GPS and surprise, some caches and one Earthcache.
It was very interesting to learn more about this lake and the geology around.
The views around the lake at the sunset are beautiful so we could take some nice photos.
Thank you very much to the owner for this earthcache and everything we learned.
I add one fav point.

fefe.adrien and I decided to stop here for the night, we had a lovely view to the lake from the campground.
We enjoyed the walk around the lake at the sunset.
Wow big surprise ! There is an earthcache about the geology of the lake !
We learnt a lot about his terrible recent past : cyclone damages such as soil erosion and landslides.
Hopefully, the forest is in progress now, the place seems like so peaceful...
Thank you for the discovery !

We had been wanting to visit Lake Tutira for many months, but were either too busy or the weather was against us making the trip. We finally snatched a couple of days when sun was forecast for Hawkes Bay and drove up in Barnaby to camp overnight by the lake. Lovely spot, it was well worth the long wait and we will certainly visit again in warmer weather (we woke to a frost). After taking the loop walk around Lake Waikopiro we read the notice for this Earthcache and Mrs B took a photo of it, marvelled at the evidence of Cyclone Bola and then headed back to Barnaby for a cup of tea. I re-read the questions and was able to answer all from memory, but then used Mrs B's photo to confirm I got the answers right . Many thanks for this Earthcache.

While in Napier visiting family we decided on a day trip to L. Tutira. Mr nzk had been here many times in the past but Mrs nzk only once before; she remembered an overgrown lake shore on a grey overcast day, so today's blue skies, sunshine & trees in their autumn colours has left her with a totally different picture of this lovely area. We look forward to exploring the area more on our next visit.

Tftc,
CO has okayed me to find this cache. On our way to Napier for the Art Deco weekend with the Riley car rally and only have time to do this cache on our way past. It is a place to visit again and spend some time one day.
Visiting a group of trackables so that I keep my finds in order.
I will email the CO my answers and change this to a found then.
I will add a photo when back in Australia.

The 16th day of "20 days exploring trip through North Island".

On our way to Napier/Hastings for a spot of Geocaching after spending a few days in Gisborne doing the same and trying to get our Geocaching pals in Gissy as obsessed as we are. Not sure if that worked.
After doing the trad located by this lovely lake we could not pass by this one, you just don't do that. Not if you are dedicated.
So we found the answers and emailed J 'N' K who gave us permission to log. Was interesting to learn how the lake was formed and about the erosion that takes place. Thank goodness that doesn't happen everywhere, we would have no countryside left.
There were two van loads of teenagers parked close by. Guess they were there either on camp, or for the day, learning about the environment. We never did stuff like that when we were at school. Our learning all took place in the classroom. How much more interesting and meaningful it must be for the kids today, getting out there and learning first hand.
Thanks J 'N' K for an interesting Earthcache. And another smilie on the road to Napier.

Had not realised until now just how significant the effects of the cyclone had been. I do remember the news of the day reporting it would take years for the economy in the area to recover.
Thanks for the permission to log this cache. We didn't realise the effects of Cyclone Bola were so major in this area. Thanks for the history/geology lesson.
What better to do than a cache about the effects of a cyclone while waiting for another cyclone to pass. We hunkered down here to sit out Cyclone Luci but all the gloom, doom and pestilence never came to pass. An afternoon's rain was all we had. TFTC!!!
Logging with CO permission.
What a nice place, I didn't have any idea this area was here been past here numerous times. TFTC.

What an interesting Earthcache, well worth the turn off the road to gather the required information. Also grabbed the Lake Tutira Traditional cache whilst in the area

Wouw....how beautiful can New Zealand be. This is a great example of taking care of the beauty and share it. A great campingsite, unfortunately we couldn't stay as our doggies were not allowed on this part.
Great earthcache to learn a bit more of what happened here.

Beautiful spot. Spent the weekend at Mahia with family, and was cruising by here with some time to kill - picked up some caches in the area.
Found with renelm and Difool, logged as RAD to save log space, time and trees.
I am not much of a logwriter, so see renelms, and possibly Difools, log for details.
TFTC!

Answers mailed to by Difool CO. It was raining when we got here, but we got the info and located the features needed.
