Find #14161

A big day of running, caching and hiking with SedgwickDave, started at Peppertree parkrun, followed with a fun breakfast event including fantastic coffee and then some hiking up to sugarloaf as well as some fantastic Gadget style caches.

A tricky one here, took a while to find but determined we got it in the end.

Massive thanks go to Bushfire. for placing this one.

*Cache find # 13368.*

A little while back, the hamfish asked me if I had been to Mt. Sugarloaf and my reply was, No I have not, he suggested that I should have a look, so today I took that advice and went for a little wander.
I had now been to each of the caches I intended on visiting and now I was heading back to the car but I still had this one to find so I headed to GZ, once there, it wasn't too long before I was able to stamp the logbook.

**Thanks to Bushfire for placing this cache.**

I placed this guy way back on the 13th November 2009 but as we all know that time changes and it has got to the stage that I have to either adopt my caches out or archive as I have a health problem that is only going to get worse.
Finally, I must thank my good friend 6Hinemoa2 for looking after this guy as it has got to the stage when I must pass it on and wish it good luck for the future. This cache is one of the least visited that I have ever placed but that is OK as I know it is in good hands at least for the time being, time will tell. It is a very pleasant wander but is not the only guy in the area so make a day of it.
Thanks my friend.
Day 43 of my new streak.

Chook travelled from Beaufort to Riddells Creek to spend a couple of days with her good friend Wendy. After walking Conglomerate Gully yesterday afternoon, the Antimony Mine was our target for today. This was a nice quick find of a classic cache to break the journey. TFTC Bushfire.

08-Jan-22
all other caches ticked off
it was time to get out of here

by now, grey clouds still loomed overhead though the rain had finally eased, leaving large puddles at regular intervals along the track
the conundrum:
walk from a to b straight through the puddles and directly sacrifice the shoes and socks to the rain god
or
skirt around the edges
tackle the puddleshore
probably brush so many water-laden grasses that the shoes will become equally wet
and further the widening of the track

whatever you choose you're getting wet
we recommend: pack a towel and some floaties
and dive in

A last hoorah. Lockdown measures reintroduced today. Entered the bush with one set of life rules. Listened radio and press conference and left the bush with another set of rules. 2020 hey? This place was heaven and will sustain me in the weeks to come. Thanks for a great cache placement!

With a perfect day ahead of us, DAB and I set out to do some caches up this way. A magic day out with no one to bother us as we enjoyed the hike through this area.

On our way back from the top we took a quick loop track around. The last of the day for me and it led to a quick find in what is a great area to explore. I can't wait to come back and tackle the last few caches in this area.

**Our thanks to Bushfire for placing this cache for us to find and enjoy**

Nice to be out here on a nice sunny winter day, it took me awhile to find the cache as usually I'm caching with someone.

I'd walked past it a couple times already and was leaning against the tree trying to figure out where it could be. When suddenly it appear to me Smile

I won't be going for the other two today, but I promise I'll come back with a friend someday.

TFTC!

I have had my eye on the caches in Lerderderg State Park for a long time now and when I heard my good friend and geocacher Magertom was visiting Melbourne, I took a day off from work and after an early morning airport pick up, we arrived at Pyrete Range car park. We got our gear together and set off. The wind was blowing hard today, in lieu of a big storm that was due in the afternoon. We made our way up the trail and before long our GPSr were down to 25m. We left the track and began our search. My GPSr was jumping all over the place, so in the end put it away and started using my geosenses. Well, we both went round and round in circles all over the place seeking this cache but it eluded us for quite awhile. Eventually, Magertom had an idea about possible hiding locations and EUREKA, we found this nice size cache. I reckon I would have walked half a dozen times past the hiding place and missed it. We signed the logbook and replaced as found.

I had to come to Melbourne for a meeting and robinyang suggested that we should make the occasion great by doing a geocache or 5. My stalwart hiking buddy excitedly informed me that we could go on a "hike" and find a few caches in more isolated locations, being from the rugged southern isle of Tasmania I was unconvinced that the tame state of Victoria could offer more than a mere sight seeing experience.
I boarded my 620am flight and arrived as the sun was rising on a windy but otherwise fine Melbourne morning, Robin was there to meet me and we set off towards the Pyrete Ranges for an exploration of the Old Antimony Mine Track!
we began our walk up the dusty dry track big enough to drive a 4wd through if the gates were not locked and became engrossed in conversation about adventures, theology and other important things when suddenly Robin realised that we had overshot our sidetrack to the cache, nimbly we backtracked and located the small fork we had missed because of our erudite debating and were quickly on our correct path again.
The erosion furrowed track meandered up and down over the hills and through troughs until it was time for us to deviate a few meters uphill from the trail and begin our search for the cache. the GPS was spinning from let to right like a bewildered steam gauge on the verge of boiling and we quickly discerned that we would have to rely on our deductive proclivity to find this elusive cache. We knew it to be a cache of reasonable size and the ground here was fairly open and clear and after a few strides back and forth .... and then a few more then spectacular cache box revealed itself with all the flair of a can can dancer on the stage.
I really enjoy this first stage of our caching adventure which truly set the tone for the next legs of the days journey. TFTC

After sleeping not too far away with the geokid, it was an early morning wander to go to Mt Sugarloaf. We had to detour around and grab the first of what would be 3 caches for the day. We love these caches in the bush where you cannot see them until...ah there you are. Nice hide and cache in good order.

Set out to make my way to the antimony mines. I have been meaning to come out here for months now so i thought that melbourne cup day would be perfect (considering i couldnt give a rat about horse racing).
Me and the geo-dog (rufus) setout on our mission and this was the first one on the cards. This cache was tucked away very nicely. I was cautous about poking my hand around incase of snakes. But soon the cache was in hand and logged.
Thanks for this adventure. Rufus and i really enjoyed it

After meeting up with McLookers and The Tritonz at the Lerderderg State Park, we hiked into some of the more remote parts of the Pyrete Range.
Having done some hiking here before I knew we were in for rollercoaster hills, but the day's cooler weather and good company made the going a little easier.
This was our first find of the day. I'm surprised this reasonably accessible cache has so few finds over many years. Great container!
Thanks, Bushfire.

07-Oct-16
While in the company of the McLookers and ThePacman we set off on a early morning hike to have a shot at some of the caches in the area.
This was a part of the world we had never seen before today and had never even heard of.
There is so much history around this area and were very glad we had some caches to highlight the relics around here.
This was our first for the day and a good one to get our legs warmed up with, our favourite type of cache was quickly found and signed.
Thanks Bushfire for the great hide.

07-Oct-16
Our first find for today and the co-ords led us directly to the cache! With ThePacman and The Tritonz we made an early start. The walking conditions were perfect, this my first visit to the area. While there was a bit of water around, luckily there was not too much but we certainly got a work out and I am sure my calves will be enjoying a radox bath tonight! Thanks Bushfire for providing us with a great start to the day. The detailed cache notes are brilliant.

Found this one during a hike in the park today. Great to find a nice big cache with plenty of room for swaps. TFTC.

Best made plans come unstuck.

I have been eyeing off a cache that is a little more than a park and grab or an "urban" cache, after all that is why I started caching in the first place - to get out and about and inject some adventure into life. I was looking at the Mt Sugarloaf cache but decided to do some clicking around when I found this one with added way points for 3 other caches.

When the better half said she was out for brunch with her friends and the nice weather I knew this was my chance, once catch - I have a 2 year old with me for the trip. A short debate on pram or back carrier and the back carrier won.

Normally I use the iPhone app but this time I fired up the old Etrex 10 and downloaded the way points, packed some snacks and drinks and off we went.

The drive out was filled with "Cow!" and "Horse!" from the back seat, once I arrived at the parking location I was glad for the back carrier, the down side is doing this with an extra 15 KG on my back!

We made it to GZ for this cache and it was a quick find with some quality swag, we took nothing (as I had forgot to pack swag). A short rest and we were off to the 2nd cache.

The walk here was quite nice and we made it around to with in 300m of GZ however a poor decision was made to try and go over the hill. An attempt was made to check the cache notes for the 2nd cache only to find no mobile service (lucky for the Etrex). By this stage little one was getting past nap time and after she told me I was sweaty we decided to abandon the search and return to the car.

I will be back to find the others in this park but am happy with the little happy face I earned here.

Today seemed like a nice day for a walk in the park.
We planned to pick up the 5 caches on the Antimony track that had been bugging us for a while.
Mission achieved in 4 hrs including a stop for lunch at the mine site.
Took the TB's stranded in the cache as this trail does not see many visitors.

I had never been to this area of Lerderderg, so I was looking forward to a pleasant walk. Parked the car, grabbed the backpack and headed off in search of caches. Quite a pleasant stroll and I was approaching GZ in no time. Accurate co-ords had me right on top of the cache. My favourite cache container as well. It is well stocked with goodies and I topped it up with 9 trackables. Thanks for bringing me here. TFTC Bushfire. Big Grin

10-Jan-15
An afternoon in the Pyrite State forest collecting a few of the southern caches. Flooding rains north of here so everything was fresh and cool - and only slightly damp. No wildlife today other than butterflies and birds. Too cold for snakes (hopefully)...

This cache was in tip top condition and the only large cache I found today. Very dry and very clean! A well established path in a beautiful bit of the bush.

Thanks and cheers!

Eyed this area off during the week and made plans to come do the hike and pick up some much needed unloved. Spent the day in the Ranges with Achey and the pooch Bentley Parker- I'm sure to say we are all feeling pretty knackered! Great to see smilies here and to experience a great day in the bush.

Took the track up the hill and soon found our first and only ammo tin of the day. Thanks for bringing me here Bushfire!

Found it! Last one for this Walkabouter's walk. Took a little bit of walking about be fore I spotted it. It's been a great day walking around the Pyretes Ranges, visiting the Antimony Mine and walking to the top of Mt Sugarloaf. It was great to pick up most of the caches here too! Will have to find the other two another day. TFTC SL It is in excellent order. Smile

I found this cache on a round-trip to spread a bit of love to the unloved cache Walk On >> have a look at the log for all the details and some pics.

Good to see a reasonable sized box Very Happy I brought the first smile of the day on my face. I was wondering if I should have brought the push-bike but the path after the cache would have been a challenge :cute:

It took me a lot longer to get in here and find the few caches which have been waiting, and the recent addition of a few more nearby helped provide the impetus to finally cross them off my list.

Enjoyed the walk in here, and the weather was just about spot on.

Cache and contents are all in good cond.

Cheers Gordo

Hi great walk out to the mine. I've done this trip many times on mountain bike and love this area. If anyone wants details on the tracks look up www.bancoora.au.com under Lerderderg section and Antimony Mine section. Mountain bikes are allowed on the main fire trails including the mine trail. For walkers there is an unofficial loop walk continuing on from the mine trail - refer this website for a GPS download - http://osp.com.au/?page_id=1603. This section is not suitable for mountain bikes. Easy find TFTC. Cache in good condition.

Our first find ! A fine welcome to the world of geocaching.thanks Bushfire:) The cache is dry and stocked. It is an awesome walk to the mine . We are quite sure no one else had been there on the day, though there were some motor bike , mountain bike and roo tracks. Not a breath of wind meant they may have remained undisturbed for a while. It was so quiet , not even a rustle in the bush. Tiny birds , two planes and our own footsteps were the only sounds we heard all day . Magic.

This site was the one I flew past on the bike today with the not knowing there was a cache nearby, after the locating of the other two this was to remain my exit (of the bush) cache, riding the bike through this area is always pleasant with the halfway mark and rest stop is usually at the mine site, today however I was on a mission so to speak, all of the rides in and around here the caches were unknown to me (yes I am new at it) before so today my rest point was to be at the Old Antimony Mine Track, a bit of useless information for you all...(antimony is or was used, mainly as a flame retardant and for strengthening lead and zinc alloys.)
Coming to this cache had me covering an old trail that I once rode up but after all of the rain it certainly has now deep washes and is virtually un-rideable. (walk up with care) but the site itself was a great rest-stop and a good find. Thank you Bushfire, for a great end to a great ride. Your cache is dry and in good condition.

Decided that I would get the three caches here today so off I set with Mudbrick. Tried to get a better map of the area at the parks office but no luck. Pleased when I saw that there was a really good track to follow.
Enjoyed the walk in, found the cache in good condition and had a bite to eat before setting off for the next two.

I've been wanting to get to the caches in this area for some time and had earmarked this date.... in hindsight, I should have chosen another as circumstances were not great today... Anyway, I did get started at 4pm(!?) on a fine and beaut summer day, if little humid. Found this one after a short search and was well rewarded with the finding of an ammo box. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that I have been walking in this area before with a bushwalking club but I can't remember it! Today was a lovely sunny if rather cool morning and after a short walk the cache was a quick find, thanks Bushfire.

06-Dec-09
This was a reasonably hard walk on a hot day, and we were hindered by bushflies that were very bothersome. A hat with corks hanging off it would have been great today. We had intended to do the three caches, but needed to have started in the cool of the morning rather than the heat of the afternoon. Never mind, we will be back to finish the job sometime in the new year. Thanks for the cache Bushfire.

03-Dec-09
1st find of the cache run and 2235th total find at 08:17.

As it was forecast to be a hot day today, we set off early to beat the heat. We thoroughly enjoyed the walk, and the opportunity to clean up some caches we haven't previously had a chance to get to.

Judgung by the debris on the tracks there must have been a cascade of water flowing down the hillsides after the recent rains.

Took: Nothing
Left: Screwdriver
Thanks Bushfire. for the cache.

Decided that as it was such a nice day, I'd clean up a few caches close to home, and take the dog for a walk as well.
I've actually done Mt. Sugarloaf a couple of times since finding the cache there as it is such a great walk.
So I had a fair idea where this one was going to be.
Thanks Bushfire for another excuse to walk this well-maintained track.

Hopefully, more fellow cachers will see the 3 caches here and decide it's worth their while to knock them all off in one hit.
Certainly the other 2 don't get the visits they deserve.

The well-stocked cache was easily located in a great spot and duly signed.
Took Nil, left nil, but appreciated the cache nonetheless.

Thanks again, Bushfire

FTF at 7.50am this morning. This was quite a fortuitous placement for me as I have been planning a walk to Cleo im Patra cache for some time and this just provided me with an irrestistable lure this morning. A humid morning greeted me but so much cooler that yesterday and perfect conditions to do this walk.
I was quite familiar with the area as I had been up Mt Sugarloaf before and approached the Walk on cache from the other direction some time back.
No one else about as I expected and the metres disappeared quickly under my feet as I approached this virgin cache.
I found the cache easily and took the rather generous FTF gift that Bushfire had kindly left and then planned my route onto the Antimony Mine cache.
I like the way you have mapped the caches in this area and the notes and WP's which will make it easier for future finders.
This area offers a lot of interest to the walker
Thanks Bushfire.
