When I get home, I'm going to have an SD card filled with photos of giant things
This giant paua shell has become a bit of an icon for Riverton and as such attracts quite a few muggles. I had to wait a while before a quick seach revealed the cache location.
Nice day out, visited Aparima Tavern for last time. Riverton is a cool place and finding cache was a bonus. NLNT and TFTH.
Took some photos of the giant paua before making the find. Found with Aoraki Sheep.
That is the largest Paua shell we have ever seen...
But it is also a nice piecce of art. Had a very good coffee in nearby café, too.

A quick park and grab at an interesting icon - now off to Bluff for a feed of oysters.TFTC

Found this with RexTrex, Sol de Lune, Zsazsa7 and Fitzy on our way up to Te Anau. I love the big shell, and clever name - well done! Thanks kryshan.
5663 + 591 = 6254. Day 6 of my week long visit to the New Zealand South Island for the NZ Mega 2012 event along with Sol de Lune, Zsazsa7, Winglen and RexTrex.
Today we drove from Invercargill to Te Anau - a stunning drive firstly along the coast and then up through some beautiful country until we arrived at the gateway to Milford Sound. Just about into Riverton we stopped for this one and - yep - thats a big one alright ! And like some previous finders - now I know how its pronounced !!
Thanks again kryshan !

A shared find with my Aussie caching mates Winglen, Zsazsa7, Sol de Lune and Fitzy-1965 as a part of the NZMEGA2012 experience and our subsequent tour.
Great to come past this iconic shellfish - whether it be called paua, abalone or ormer. Well done to the locals for creating an industry based on jewellery manufacture from the shells and to kryshan for bringing us here.

Today we were off to Te Anau, grabbing a few more caches in Invercargill before leaving. This was a quick stop and grab befoe moving onto the next. Cool looking shell, certainly glad we stopped.
The cache was found after a quick search, no problems with it.
Found with ZsaZsa7, Winglen, fitzy_1965 and Rextrex (local NZer) on our trip around the South Is after attending the New Zealand Mega. We managed to grab a few caches on travels and this was just one of them.
Thanks for the cache and the chance to see more of the South island.

So that's how Paua is pronounced Found the Paua and the cache. It's certainly not part of a paua trail Left 2 TB's. TFTC kryshan.
In Dunedin from Whangarei with flowernz for the MEGA having a great time finding some of the south caches. Really enjoying the locations the caches are taking us to. Have never been to Riverton before but Mr flowernz taught here in the past so was able to point out all the interesting spots. Big paua !! he was sure it wasn't here before. A good spot for a cache and flowernz soon had it in hand. TFTC
Guess no trip to Riverton would be complete without a visit here - mr flowernz can remember a huge pile of paua somewhere about here [back in the 70s we're talking!!]
Cache soon in hand and all good...
Down south with tikitour for the MEGA event + a few caches of course!! This was our 'trip to Riverton' day - mr flowernz taught there for a few years back in the 70s so he was taking us down memory lane with him...

Found on our way to the NZ Mega Event. This southern part of the coast was one of the more memorable sections of our trip. Yes, we too discovered (or confirmed) the pronunciation of "Paua". Bit of a prickly find.

Nearly 2 decades ago me and a mate where sitting around drinking near Tuatapere and another mate who had been paua diving stopped by and gave us a full roasting dish of raw paua. The two of us spent the following two days eating our way through the pile of paua (yep breakfast, lunch, dinner and super). All we would do is wrap the paua in a teatowel and then smack it with the back of the axe to tenderise before frying in some butter, serve on a bit of bread, yum.
Our third day of Guzzi Ride to the Riviera of the south. Was amazed that the large shell is actually covered in hundreds of pieces of Paua shell. A local came out of his shell to come and talk to us about our motor bike. Love that about small towns.
The cache revealsed us a great spot in Riverton. We bought some paua shell products in ther local shop. TFTC
