Great day for a walk with Pinocchio59, what an awesome spot for a cache. It wasn't too hard to scramble down to the beach and we quickly found the replacement (film canister). Great hiding spot and beautiful spot for a quick dip in private. TFTC
Today, we had pencilled in a trip via the 309 Pony Express power trail but the predicted rain arrived early so postponed the trip to hopefully do another day. We had a leisurely morning then mid morning, the rain stopped so decided to head out but to stick to mainly sealed roads and short walks in case the rain restarted.
We parked at the Kuaotunu end, as we noticed the road closure sign, plus the sign noted there was nowhere to turn around. It turned out that there was plenty of room to turn around just short of where the road was closed and there was a car parked there! Obviously the locals don't take heed of the sign. The owner was down on the rocky headland, fishing.
Luckily the tide was lowish as we hadn't factored that in. Took a while to find the replacement cache was it was well hidden. Great location, very wild, but scenic and the pirates would have loved it. TFTC.

#11334. I suspected we should have driven past the end of the beach. There were fresh tyre tracks, and a car was parked at the start of a track down to the wee cove (and there was HEAPS of room to turn round). However, we enjoyed our walk down the road. The track takes you to a small, rocky headland. It wasn't hard to scramble down to the beach, and after a short search the replacement (film canister) was discovered. This is a great wee spot. TFTC.
We noticed the sign at the beginning of the street to this little area, so we decided to park and walk....hmmm to find out that it was easily to do with the camper.
Didn't knew that the cache was dissabled. So went for a search, yeah it wasn't in the clear spot.
Have replaced the cache with a black filmcontainer. Just above the hint.

Loved this cache...just logging old visits ...found this with Judgey214...thank you
Will need to check and/or replace the cache. Will be disabled for 3 months.
Found it.. but only the destroyed container at the beach. It tooks us a long time... It is an amazing spot and it needs a new cache! Thank you for showing us this place.
Following local advice, I ignored the road closure and cycled up here from Matarangi. Nice place. TFTC
This was an interesting cache. First we found Bluff Rd was closed at the Matarangi end, so had to come in from the Kuaotunu end to the other end of the closure. We understand the closure may be permanent. We're not sure if it is still possible to walk around the road as suggested. Then down the interesting path to the beach where the tide was coming in rapidly. We soon found the very rusty cache, and like others had to use a rock to get it open and closed. Then back up to the car to our second flat tyre in 2 days! (Or maybe the first one wasn't repaired properly?) TFTC
We had looked for this cache a few years ago while visiting Matarangi but it was MIA. Back for a look on a stormy day.
Thanks
Thanks
Good fun, was nice to do a bit of rock hopping , easy find and lovely location
Some rock hoping required to get to this one! And getting the lid on the rusty cache took a bit of work too.
Came here this afternoon while exploring in the area. Just as well the track start coordinates were given as I would have been rather unlikely to find it otherwise. Passed a number of fishermen on the rocks and then a quick walk along the beach and a quick find. The cache container is getting rather rusty and I had to use a rock to provide some force to get the lid open. There was a bit of rusty water inside the container but the logbook is dry. Given the environment it's in, that ammo can has held up very well. Signed log and I clipped the lid shut properly this time, hopefully no more water will get in. Thanks for the cache and for bringing me to this lovely spot.
Found while on hols from the UK. Awesome spot. Dropped a trackable we found in OZ.
This would have to be our favourite cache of the entire week! What an awesome little beach and would never have come down here without this cache placement. Couple of guys fishing on the rocks on the point but had this beach all to ourselves. Great cache container. Thank you very much for this, well worth a favourite!
Sweet spot! Track down to the beach (if you came from the road) is next to the rubbish bin
A good hidey-hole. Found it with Team New America. Started raining after the find, weren't dressed for it and had to take shelter in a nearby rocky nook. Not sure how long this rain will take to pass. Hope you dont find three soggy skeletons in a rocky nook when you come to find this cache.........

Great cache with lots of treasure added to. Easily found so re hid in same place but bit more camp. To find you need to get to the root of the clue.
Had to do this one! Walked up the road, although it was quiet late on this Sunday afternoon. This is what caching is all about. Great location, story, cache, all the elements. I had a happy pirate and a Jolly Roger who have been waiting for a suitable cache to call home. A definite favourite.
So glad to re visit this spot. When we came last year, the cache had been washed away, so was looking forward to finding the new one..and it did not disappoint. From the scramble down, and the gorgeous location..what more could you need?? Oh... A nice ammo can Geocache! Perfect. Quick find as it was a little exposed. But Re hidden better. tFTC. A favourite from us
Hmmm. What to do now the wind has ruled out the kayaking plan...spend the morning geocaching? What a great way to start. Even with the high tide it was accessible and not too hard. Lovely.
2.00pm. This is a nice little walk down to GZ. And a quick find once there. A favourite from us for bringing us down here.
Thank you. David and Noeline.

Having met the Co at 'Shady' we were given the heads up that this cache was worth a visit - Mr P stayed in the car as he was feeling tired so I skipped down the hill to this... incredible spot - so very beautiful and I completely agree just the place for pirates to stow their pretties... loved the whole thing so a favourite from me. t4tc
found it without GPS with Marcos and Jellycat. Great spot. Ive been coming here since I was a kid while my dad went fishing.

on the way to whitianga we stopped here. The best thing on geocaching is that we can discover areas and beaches which we can not find in our travelguide...this is again a beautiful place thank you for this cache...we could see the pirates fighting
Found orginally as part of phasevisitor team, now created own account, re-logging as yorkshirekiwi83.
Spent the weekend in Whitianga and on Saturday we drove up to Matarangi exploring some new areas and picking up caches along the way. Enjoyed the walk down to the beach and across the rocks to the cache, making a quick find at GZ. TFTC!

Playing hide 'n' seek and accidently stumbled across it. Were'nt looking for any. There was a travel bug inside.
Found on our weekend cache raid of the Coromandel. Busy fishing spot and interesting rock formations. Cache spotted on arrival so have placed it further out of sight TFTC.
#481, cool dirt road, excellent trail to the beach. not sure how long this will be here for. cool hide & container, saw 2 fishermen on rocks. Yes I could almost see blackbeard in the distance. This has to be my fav hide, dropped ontario coin TB, thought terrain rating a little low since I wouldn't let Wife & kids do this one. TFTC
Still on our bike trip, locked the bikes at the top, and went down over the rocks, what a neat little bay. thanks for that one.
Very nice location, the way over the rocks was not easy, but
it was low tide, so it was ok!

Found it after a long hard look, GPS was telling me a different place to look, but got there in the end.
Excellent cache, many thanks. Took two attempts due to high tide putting the junior geocachers off. Tftc
Awesome hiding spot! Struggled to reach it with my short arms but got it eventually. Favorite point ??
Looking back at the logs- just like all pirate treasure- this one has had a rugged life with being lost and replaced and refound and storms and buried etc!! Great stuff! So we were delighted it has been restored as we really enjoyed this find. This truly is a wonderful little pirate cove, you can so picture the ship at anchor just out of the cove and pirates rowing in to bury their bounty. Well we found it on a lovely afternoon and enjoyed the hunt. A favorite point for this one- Arrrrgh!
Happy Holidays from Germany.

Awesome spot, had the place to ourselves, not that surprising given how remote it feels.

Last one for the day and what a beauty it was. Fantastic small beach with rocky outcrops. 2 guys fishing off the rocks but they were too interested in their catch to see me. Quick find, gets a favourite for the location.
Easy find on the way home from Coromandel to do some walking tracks
and the Fletcher Bay to Stoney Bay track and had time to find some caches.
There was no one at the Bluff so parking was OK

This is a truly magnificent cache, no other word for it A lovely walk down to a most beautiful secluded beach. Could happily spent hours here just sitting and watching waves roll in. Nice big cache, neat and tidy. A favourite. TNLN TFTC Centuryson from Australia

Had a good look for the old cache but could not find it. Moved the cache down the beach to another spot well above the high tide mark. Replaced the cache with an ammo tin to give it maximum resistance to the weather.
All good to go.

Right will be up at Matarangi either the 2nd Weekend in July, or the following weekend.
Sorry for the delay, but the cache is worth re-activating.
Sorry for the delay, but the cache is worth re-activating.
The story with the cache is it is under what is now a couple of metres of sand. Recent storms have brought much more sand into the cove. I have got an ammo can to replace the cache, however I was unable to get to the cove due to some wild weather at Matarangi, when we were there last.
I would love to re-enable the cache, however I will not be up at Matarangi for about 4-6 weeks. If you can hold off from disabling the cache, I would be grateful.
Thanks and sorry about the lack of updates.

This cache will be reactivated the weekend before Easter. Organising an ammo can to replace the smaller container. Hope we find the old one.
Disabling till we get up to Matarangi next. Will prepare a replacement cache if we cannot find this one.
We knew before we attempted this that the cache had been moved, but we hoped we might find it and add one to our tally, plus help out the cache owner with some adjusted coords. It was a fun scramble over the rocks, but no joy at the end. It's hard to know where to start really, when the description is something like 'moved it uphill a bit' when nearly everything is uphill. We also bumped into another caching couple at the next cache, and I think they said they had also DNFd here.
We think we searched pretty good all around but it must be hidden to well, just out of the reach of our eyes ...
Will leave active...pity I didn't get this log before I left today, as I was at Matarangi this weekend. I will investigate where the last finder placed the cache. Wish people would not 'take responsibility' and move it, rather than advise me of a problem.
Will be a month or two before we are back in the area.

Great walk down to the bay and a great rock at GZ but unfortunately we couldn't find it. Having read the logs it seems that someone has moved the cache uphill, maybe the owner could take a look and maybe update the coords if needed?
Spent a couple of days in Matarangi. Went out again at night after I'd put KiwiEric to bed.
Quick find just after sunset.

Sorry for late log entry. Funny, i had found this one quite some time ago, but forgot to log it again, went searching for this one, terrain looked very familiar, located cache, had a skim though the log and sure enough i had found this one once before. oh well, still a good walk. T4TC.
An interesting secluded spot. A bit tricky to navigate the rocks, but well worth the walk in. TFTC
A nice walk from the Kuaotunu Bay Lodge.
Nice location, we had high tide so extra challenging...

Definately a pirates and smugglers cove. Thanks for bringing us down the track to the cache. The female cacher in the group managed a wee slide on the rocks. Was rather amusing I thought. She did mention that the slide was worth it when arriving at GZ. A few bruises and loss of face turned to smiles when down amongst the pirates. TFTC
What a lovely bay - smugglers paradise. Must bring fishing rod next time. TFTC
Lovely day geocaching today, nice beach area several people fishing. Short search soon located the cache. SL TFTC
