This was an interesting little stop off on our drive today, reminiscent of the gold rush towns in Australia that I visited as a kid. We wandered around and collected the required information before continuing on our journey. Visited with rumpuslabs, tftc
I'm doing a 3-week bucket list road trip around South Island, and after crossing the Alps to the West Coast yesterday, ending up in Punakaiki overnight, I'm now heading south. With Ross being home to an AL, an earthcache and a virtual, there was no way that I could drive through town without stopping ... and as things transpired, I nearly had the place to myself. And it was nice to wander around looking at and reading everything ... and even messaging the CO while I was in situ. Thanks for setting up an earthcache that didn't focus totally on geology here ... good job, WonderStuff.
Visited this little town with its great history. At home wellbdo the administration.
Another long night in Ankh-Morpork. Sometimes I wonder if this city has a soul. I think it must, although if it does, its a loud, unruly, and slightly unwashed one. Its the sort of soul that sidles up to you in a dark alley, asks if youve got any spare change, and then gives you a lecture on how its actually all your fault.
CaptainVimes and I have crossed the ditch to attend the Geo Toroa mega in Dunedin and tour around the South Island for two weeks.Love a good gold town history cosplay. Thanks TheWonderStuff and happy caching

#3934 Today is day 13 of my geocaching vacation in New Zealand. I'm visiting Hokitika Gorge and driving to Franz Josef.Found it! It was raining when I got to the town and everything was closing. I did get to step inside the gaol before they locked the door. TheWonderStuff, thank you for the cache!-crystaloops from Taipei, Taiwan on October 13, 2024 @ 16:09:47[GC23BVR] Gold (Westland) was a D1.5/T1.5 Other Earthcache at the time of finding.
During our trek through New Zealand, on the way north, we also visited Ross gold mines. We really enjoyed the beautiful country and the friendly people.Co TheWonderStuff, thank you for showing us this iconic place.
We brought Diaz09 and Harlan2013 to Ross quite some time ago on a first to find hunt nearby. While we were in Ross we gathered the required information but we had not gotten around to sending the information to the cache owner. With the current souvenir challenge that is happening I had a look at our list of earth caches that we have notes on. This is one such earth cache. The required information has now been sent and the photo found ready to log this one. Thanks for placing this earth cache and thank you for the smiley
Tried this earthcache a few years ago but for some reason didn't get all the info. This time I did with the help of a very friendly cat that kept me company.
On the home stretch of a south island roadie. Have been through Ross a few times. This time stopping to check out the area and it's history. Enjoyed strolling around and gathering the information. Answers sending to CO. Tfte

The view was pretty decent, even though it was cloudy. Then I moved along the Glacier Hwy through the wetland area and stopped at caches and attractions. I drove to the center of the gold mining area and saw the local museum and old houses and hotels. After the Alpine Hwy, I started to approach the mountains again and ended up for the night at the slightly bizarre Otira Stagecoach Hotel. There's everything from the stagecoach to Gandalf and Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. So hopefully I'll live to see the morning . Thanks to everyone for the caches and greetings from the Czech Republic.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Today, we drove from Harihari to Punakaiki and stopped here to have a short look at this earthcache... Well, to be honest - it took us much longer than we thought, because it was so interesting to read the signs, to go into the small museum and to eat an icecream afterwards ... We found all the answers, took a little walk and made some nice pictures . The answers were sent to the CO and we were really glad having stopped here at this nice placce!! A big thank you to TheWonderStuff for leading us here and for showing us this place and of course also for working out this earthcache here on site!Best wishes from the North Sea, Germany, from Cuxine . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ________________oooooooo____________oooooooooooooo_________oooooooooooooooooo________oooooooooooooooooooo_______oooooooooooooooooooo____oooooo_______oooooooooooooooooooo___ooo__ooo_______oooooooooooooooooooo__oooo____oo________oooooooooooooooooooooooo_________oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo_oooo_______oooooooooooooooooo________ooooo___ooooooooooooooooooooooo_________oo_ooo____oooooooooooooooooooooooooo_____oooooooo__ooo_oooooo__________oo___oooo_______ooo__ooo_ooo______oooo__ooo_______oooo___ooo__ooo___ooooo___ooo_____ooo___ooo____oo____ooo____oooooo__ooo____ooooooo____________ooo_____ooooo____ooo

This is a really cool cache in a small town with a huge industry! At the time of logging were about to give the panning a go!TFTC!
Had a small wander round finding the answers. I think we have a larger and definitely deeper hole in Waihi. TFTC.
Golden history, the only history;)Very interesting place. From that day I prefer greenstones )Thanks for the cache and greetings from the Czech Republic.
After years on our bucket list and three cancellations due to Covid, we are thrilled to finally be here. Following several cruises we flew from Sydney, Australia to Wellington, New Zealand to begin our next adventure. Picked up our rental vehicle and will be driving, exploring, hiking, and caching both islands for 3.5 weeks. When we arrived the area was packed full of tour group muggles despite a steady rain falling. Fortunately, the tour bus left in a bit so then we had the area almost strictly to ourselves. Visited all the locations searching for needed info and snapping pics. The rain finally stopped just before we finished our "tour". Our answers have been sent via the message system and we appreciate the CO developing this geological lesson. Thanks for adding to our adventure today, Nukeworker and Racquetball Girl, Arkansas, USA
We had a lovely look around but the rain really dampened things. Answers sent to ECO. Photo attached as requested.
Together with Travelser I'm going Down Under. We are driving around with a motorhome. After 7 weeks driving around through Australia we arrived the 2th November in New Zealand. For ten days we will cross the Northern Island and than for 2 weeks the Southern Island.During our trip we of course search for several caches. Most of them brought us to very nice spots, like this one.All the CO's, and in this case TheWonderStuff, thanks for bringing us here and give our trip a special accent.
After traveling around Australia with Oopie for 7 weeks, we have now been traveling with the camper in New Zealand for 4 weeks. Along the way we will of course also visit various types of caches in beautiful places, including this one.So we make the answers together and with your permission Oopie wil sent the answers. Thanks CO for creating and laying this cache.
Found whilst on a lap of the South Island in our camper VanEmpire Hotel nearby is awesome.TFTC

On our road trip through NZ we visited Ross. A nice historical place. Thanks for showing us.
This was a very interesting stop along the way from Fox Glacier to Punakaiki. The old gold rush town reminded me of a town in California where I used to live.
Today it went from the west coast to the east coast and interesting caches were selected. The log release was promptly granted.

After coal mining in Brunner and Denniston, Ross was the third mining site we visited. We arrived at noon and gathered a parking spot with some shade.
Nice and interesting place to visit. We like the information panels with the old photos, showing the place as it has been.
The requested information could be gathered with success.
Thank you for showing us this place and happy new year

Still on our road trip through , driving today from Punakaiki to Fox Glacier.
We pass through this former gold village Ross and make a stop to see the historic site.
Answers to the questions have been sent to the CO.
Nice little (open air) museum it’s actually interesting to see and try to understand how this place went from zero to big and how it is back to a very, very small community today….
All in all than his whole region seems very empty when driving through (even a bit of a struggle to get some food for lunch )
Thank you for providing a reason for a stop here and the interesting earthcache - many geogreetings from chitza from Belgium

An evening cache raid to Ross. Staying further north but decided there was enough time after setting up camp and having diner to pop down here and snare all the caches.
Looked at the lake, do they give former mines now ponds a special name? Two minutes of googlin says no.
Did the ad lab first and then I got to circle around again almost the same locations for this one. I remember coming here before the pit was filled in. A mazzive hole.

On a mission to catch up with a 99-year old Latvian on the Coast today. And knocking off a couple of caches of the PWGT list.
Stopped here for the multi, stayed for Adventure Lab and this Earthcache, and then put a trad on top of the cake. Reading about this gold rush, I just can't imagine this quiet wee village with 2500 inhabitants.
The classic nature of man - he comes, he exploits, he leaves. With the gold.

We were coming through here as part of a family roadtrip holiday. We stopped here for a quick visit and ended up spending a little while. Enjoyed the nearby museum with the very interesting guy behind the counter. Our timing was just early enough to look through the historic buildings before he closed for the day. And of course got a bunch of photos and the required info for this cache. Info emailed as required. Really intersting spot and loved learning some of the history from around here. We will be back for a longer visit sometime in the future. TFTC
Found while travelling down the West Coast with Djangomalango. A bit wet today but not enough to stop us getting out the car and having a look around. Will send answers to CO now I'm home again.
I stay in Ross when I am travelling North it has a lot of character. Enjoyed doing the cache while taking a stroll.

A bit wet today but not that wet for the locals. Enjoyed our wee look around Ross. Man in shop/museum very friendly and helpful. TFTC
We had a short family holiday to the West Coast, and as my Dad was born in Ross and is buried here as well, it is a must stop place for us. Spent a little time in Ross today showing the wee wombles around and visiting the cemetery and also the grave of another "famous" Ross relative so had time to complete the earth cache today. Answers have been sent.

Came here as part of a 6 day epic Tour of the SI in the company of GSEL, seeking out the PWGT caches, but I can never resist a good Earthcache (especially one combined with a good chunk of history), so we also stopped for this one. Scurried about looking for info, and then took a lot of photos! Thanks for taking the trouble to set this earthcache up.
The answers have been sent through to the CO, I'll change this to a found it log, once permission to log this has been received.

Been to Ross a few times. Pengi got caught and put in stocks today. Naughty penguin.
After a day exploring around Hokitika we headed to Ross to end the day. Nice little walkabout museum and some wonderful history. I should have brought my spade and done a bit of digging given how much gold was still about. Thanks for the earth cache.
This was an interesting walk around with downsouthinv and Abbykitt. I might just have to go back and retrieve her...

The answers for that EC felt more like answering a virtual, but it was interesting to learn about the history here. We even saw that big nugget (replica - that was impressive! Day 2 of our West Coast visit and part of todays targets was to get out to the glaciers at Fox and Franz, a trip out to Bruces Bay for the earthcache there, grab some missing minutes on my Easterly coordinates for a Challenge cache in Nelson, and just generally get some gravel under our heels and some fresh air in our lungs. This is the only 'full day' we have as we travelled down yesterday and head back to the rat race tomorrow. A long day was experienced, we were on the road before 7 in the morning and back in just after 9pm. Plenty of awesome scenery and experiences, and no sandfly bites! Thanks to all CO s who made this possible, and the the West Coast for just being you.
A weekend away has been discussed for a while now, and me and mrs c both had the Monday off so a 3 day trip over to West Coast was the plan. We were fully hopeful of getting down to see the glaciers at Fox and Franz Joseph and were staying in Hokitika for a couple of nights. Plenty of kms driven and a few caches found, incl a virtual and 5 Earthcaches. Good weather all round, no sandfly bites (I know!!) and plenty of awesome sites and sights.
Plenty of kms driven and a few caches found, incl a virtual and 5 Earthcaches. Good weather all round, no sandfly bites (I know!!) and plenty of awesome sites and sights.
Yeah, my Lottikind and I came here and enjoyed the places you showed us.

Found this earth on our stop while driving south. Enjoyed learning about the history here that a lot of people will miss. Some of the facts are hard to believe. Thanks for this wonder stuff!
Sweet history! Sleepy town. Closed on Sundays it seems. We hiked a bit up the trail and said hi to the pub doggies.
KL6 and I are in NZ for 16 days or so exploring the South Island mostly by campervan—with a few shoulder days in BnBs. We plan to visit the Fjordland first—Milford Sound—and the back track and head all the up the Punakaki Pancake Rocks vía the west coast, stopping by Franz Joseph along the way. Then back down to the lakes, Tekapo, Punaki, Mt Cook, and then Wanaka. Finally we’ll return back to Queenstown after our huge campervan adventure. Lastly back to Australia for a couple nights before heading back home to the USA.
Obviously, we stopped by this cache along the way. We originally had about 171 caches on the list to be near and check out. Whether due to favorites, or a planned stop for the evening. We have planned the adventure using cachetur.no which is amazing by the way. Highly recommend the website and app when you’ve got a lot to see and find. Helps keep you on track and it’s awesome to have a schedule with time estimates of when you’ll arrive at the next destination and if you’re ahead or behind schedule.
Thanks to TheWonderStuff for the Cache! Found around 4:54 PM - I often sign as Wæki3 (shorthand for Wæki3_KL6 due to small logs and or KL6 not being with me for the cache find). But this is an earthcache so did we sign!? This is Find #2176.
We have also contributed a lot of caches in the Flagstaff Arizona area, and currently to date we’ve hidden 85 caches. Even if you’re not in the area, I’m really into creating interesting and creative puzzles. I have some clever ones—many to do with logic, math, graphic design, or games. Checkout my certitudes page for a collection of many of the Unknown (Mystery) caches I’ve created (https://www.certitudes.org/feed?u=W%C3%A6ki3_KL6). Perhaps after a few solves, you’ll find yourself in the area.
