Found this while grandson shooting at gun club. Cache was a bit wet - needs checking. TFTC
After a big 3 days of 4x4 we decided on this route home. Planned to do some of Hakataramea and Meyers Pass. The rain came in and we were soaked and cold by the time we got near Waimate. Got changed and had a meal then made our way home. Nice easy find all good here, thanks for the cache ernienz.
Still has the sign on the front gate about using the school grounds out of hours..!
I gather that it was closed during the restructuring of Waitaki Valley schools in 2003, which led to the formation of the Waitaki Valley School in Kurow in 2004 by combining the Hakataramea, Kurow and Otematata Schools.

Found with StreetWalkerNZ on our Waitangi weekend to Kurow and environs. Today we are travelling from Christchurch to Kurow via the Hakataramea Pass Rd, a road that is new to both of us.
We left this cache for the return journey after finding the one further up this road. Parked a little too early so a 30m walk to GZ where the cache was a quick find. TFTC.

In the 21 years I've been in the South Island (21) the Hakataramea Valley Road is one road that I had never travelled. Today I decided to see what the road was all about. Starting out from Kurow it was my intention to go as far as the boundary gate between the valley and the MacKenzie Basin, visiting as many of the geocaches in the valley as I could.
Who mows the grounds now that schools out? TFTC ernienz

In Kurow for the long weekend and time to get some caches on the outskirts before heading home. A nice quick find here TFTC
Decided to make a trip to Duntroon over the Dansey Pass. Lots of logs to find and sign and this one was one of them. Day 3 and it begins again starts with a nice walk up the hill. TFTC
For my personal challenge of working towards getting my calendar on GC.COM to be at least the same shade of green or darker I need to sign off at least 7 caches today. I won't grumble if I find one or two more. Today I decided to go a drive to the Hakataramea River and then onto Meyers Pass.
Being Saturday school would have been definitely out.
Cheers for the cache.

Cheers for the cache.
There are so many lovely country schools "out". This one looks like it had well cared for grounds.
+ a marble, - nothing.

The (major road trip was about to begin) that was for the Oamaru Geofest trip in the company of HKCB and iammrwalker for a bit of a road trip across to the west coast, through Haast and in a roundabout way to Oamaru.
My trip stats were as follows: 617 caches (214 Puzzles), 3300kms, 500 litres of Petrol, 21 hours sleep, 100+hours caching time. THe weather was wonderful and apart from about a 6hour period on the sunday we had fine weather all the way and feel that we made a bit of a hole in the region.
Firstly thanks to all the CO's that put in the effort to to set up these caches and to all the CO's whose caches we did not find this trip, well we are already planning our next trip.
We worked hard at getting specific caches (especially the Geo Art around christchurch and hence our concentration on this area for the preliminary 24 hours. So after a couple of running repairs to the rental vehicle (fuses not working) we were off knowing that all ports could be charged and that sleep was for the weak.
Sorry about the copy and paste logs but that is what tends to happen with a number run of this size. Heading up throught he MacKenzie Basin to cross to Kurow on the way to Dansey's Pass before heading back and up to Oamaru

Came down this way from the North for the Oamaru Geofest, and decided to add a few more days to the weekend trip and turn it into a bit of a Mega mission, starting 5pm on Wednesday 18th and finishing 3pm Monday 23rd! Teaming up with Cats&Dragons for the first 24 hours then with Iammrwalker joining the team for the remainder.
Just a few of the stats for the trip were:
- 700 caches found, including 270+ puzzles (thanks to the Christchurch Geoart)
- 3300 km's driven, using over 500L of fuel $$$
- Just over 20 hours of sleep (about 4 per day on average), and about 100 hours of caching time.
Certainly a Mega Trip!
Day 4: With the lack of sleep starting to take a toll we finished Day 3 off early and got a few hours sleep before getting back to finding about 2am this morning. Todays mission was to find caches around Tekapo before heading South through the Mackenzine Country via Hakataramea Pass, and onto Dansey's pass before coming out on the coast and heading to Oamaru for the Geofest and caching around the area.
Sorry about the cut and past logs, but that seems to happen with cache runs of this size!

I found this Geocache on a Geocaching mega mission along with Cats&Dragons and HKCB. With only just over three and half thousand Geocache finds I was very much the over achiever in training. We were in the South Island to support the Oamaru Geofest event, hunt down some Jasmar and D/T harder to find Geocaches, lonely caches (those not found in more than 6 months), virtuals and try and meet some milestone numbers. We signed the logs HIC, an abbreviation of our respective Geocaching names, (H)KCB, (I)ammrwalker and (C)ats&dragons. A huge thanks to all the CO’s who placed and maintain the Geocaches we found.
I arrived in Christchurch late Thursday evening having left straight from work and was picked up by my intrepid companions in our four wheel drive rental to find they had already grabbed about 270 finds in the previous twenty four hours. I wonder if the rental company would have still let us have it had they known we would travel 3300km in it before returning it four days later? Our trip took us to Greymouth via Arthurs pass, Ngahere, down the west coast to Haast across to Hawea, Cromwell, Twizel, Aoraki Mt Cook, Tekapo, onto the east coast up to Oamaru and back up to Christchurch via Akaroa and countless diversions and small towns along the way. We slept in the car for the first two nights, grabbing some shut eye between cache finds, taking turns to drive. We rented a small place in Oamaru for the other two nights and appreciated a bed to sleep in and a hot shower. It was an amazing trip, in which I discovered the South Island has some of the most incredible scenery in the world.

After staying down the road at Station Peak homestead and reminiscing about Mr's fathers connection to the place we decided to come here and visit where he went to school. Great time getting to know the history of the area. FYI Apparently someone brought the school in the hope to run a corporate team bonding/challenge business on the property but it never really took off so they use it as a holiday base. Thanks for the cache, all in good condition
This one seems disappeared unfortunately. We only found an empty hole at coordinates.
Looks like the old school is used for a different reason now. Found with Aoraki Sheep.
Stopped here on a day drive to explore the region and find a few caches. Nobody about today and the cache was a quick find. Signed log, TFTC
Another great find while slowly heading to the Christchurch Mega.
Thanks for adding to the fun of my trip.

Here we are, away from one school and ending up at another...oh, the humanity!
Lovely drive through from Tekapo. A couple of marginal fords/river crossings for a car. Beautiful views . TFTC
A sad sign of the times with all these small country schools closed but nice to see its become a home.

We enjoyed the day caching in this area

Another ex-school on our travels, must be a long bus ride for some kids up this valley! Cheers
Found with Kiwi Moose on a big weekend of caching. A good day to drive the Hakataramere Valley. A quick find. Thanks for the hide.
Easy find.

There was quite a bit of heavy machinery action over the road - ?maybe they were thinking of harvesting.
It's sad to see these empty schools. TFTC.

The little Bairdys spotted the red slide. I'm not sure I convinced them that it wasn't a school now. Mr Bairdy retrieved this one. TFTC SL
ajbenn recalls visiting this school when he was on the road as an advisor (to schools). the drive has been a trip down memory lane for him. All new territory for me, South Island born but schooled further north.
The school looks still used, but maybe it is only the playground. Quick grab, but wonder how this cache will survive heavy rain.
yeah, and yet it still has the appearance of active school, and sign at the gate adds to the confusion.....almost as though it is still open to public access....very weird
Wow - this is a long way from anywhere for a school.
Nice quick cache find. TFTC.

Another quick easy find. Mrs W.E.K.A.'s grandfather went to this school about 1916. TFTC
This was obviously a busy little school in its day, now holiday or permanent homes. TFTC
