Beautiful views from the lookout, it's in a black ice cream container not far from the bench
It was nice to finally grab this cache, it has been on my list for a long time and being in the area we had to grab it. There was a lot of up on the way to the cache, I definitely need to get my fitness back up. The weather mostly held, and we had fun on the way. Despite me complaining about stairs at one point. It was worth the walk, the view from the top was beautiful, and we found the cache pretty quickly. Great to have such an old cache knocked off the list. Thanks for the cache #1713
Really pleased to find this cache, as it's one of the older ones around Auckland. It as in good condition and not too difficult to find. Lynn and I had quite a good walk up to it, without getting wet, although sometime after the heavens opened for about 5 minutes. The view is worth it and the track continues up more steps, to another cache which we couldn't properly look for this time due to the rain, before forking to the right, where you can continuing down to the dam and have a rather nice loop back to the car park.Highly recommend this cache for people that like the outdoors and want a not too extreme, but still very good walk.
Found it after after reading the cache description.Favourite point for keeping this old cache active.
The cache is back to its original ice cream container form. Definitely went off the track a little early with kellipls, there's no need to clamber around on a steep slope. TFTC!
Went off the trail a tiny bit too early and was rewarded with muddy knees but it sure was cool to find a cache placed so long ago. Condition was good, thank you!
Great to be able to grab this almost 22yr old cache. Container in good condition
Covered it with some batural camo. A few muggle signatures on the log. TFTC

Out for a walk with some old friends visiting New Zealand. Finally got enough signal to see the caches around here. Satisfying to bag this oldie!
spent 6 great weeks in New Zealand with my ?? The start was a bit bumpy (Cyclone Gabrielle) but then it got better and better. We travelled to both islands and discovered a lot. We photographed and filmed many beautiful things, but most of it stayed in our hearts.Almost everywhere we stopped, a cache was already waiting for us. Most of the caches are well maintained and easy to find. With mostly very nice weather, we saw a lot of this impressive island. In many places, caches were waiting for us, which were sometimes easy and sometimes difficult to find. This cache was also included and was successfully signedWe puzzled a lot in advance and the tours ?? were well prepared So this box was also well found.now I have another on my personal cache card.many thanks to [^] **Liz, Steve, Katherine and Tui** [^] for the effort and the cache and greetings from Germany ???? TFTF**Geistercacher**
Rain perhaps finished? Came out here anyway and we're lucky to do this loop. Reservoir full!... TFTC
It has lots of stuff inside it. It was fun searching for it and my brother found it
This cache is older than some in our group today. Impressive. Using geosenses quickly found the black ice cream container. All good here. Tftc
Pros of a rainy windy day: nobody around!
Cons of a rainy windy day: slippery as heck!
By far the oldest cache I’ve found so far!

Walked up to the view, discovered I forgot to sunblock Mr 5, ran back to the carpark and back up ... Phew. Checked geocache map and it was right next to where the family were camped eating lunch
Cache in good condition. TFTC.

Had a lot of fun with this, dodging other trail walkers and keeping mr.5 from telling everyone we were searching for treasure. Thanks!
We came up from the Waikato for a walk in the Hunuas today. Not a very nice day for it with drizzly, cold weather but it's not so bad once you're walking in the bush. Great to find a few caches along the way as well. This cache is still surviving well, (currently it's in an ice cream container) but I'm not sure if it will outlast the Kevin Anderson cache in Wellington which is still going strongly! TFTC
Easy find on a rainy walk. It was nice not having to duck and weave through the branches for this one. TFTC
Doing the loop. Ankle still not right. Couple places it wasn't happy. Search wrong side at first of course. Lol. Saw a possibility and followed it and there it was. Nice to find a old one. Tftc
GPS mucked me around a bit here, so pulled out the trusty phone to discover still had reception. Wallah managed to find it, all intact.
With lockdown lifting this morning a plan was put in place for a quick jaunt around Hunuas with some of Team SEAC.
Quick find and we were on our way.
Thanks for the cache. Signed Seac to save space.

Out with my geocaching family today to do the walk. Logs were signed "Team Seac" to save room on the log.
The stairs were a killer!...got my heart going

Doing the Suspension Bridge Loop to grab the two caches here.
Quick find and we loved the size of the cache.

Wow, this cache has been around for a long time. Happy to make a nice quick find here today. We noticed a note on the log book from the park ranger in 2018 stating that they had done work on the track, found the cache, and made sure it was returned when the work was completed - so pleased they helped keep the cache alive. Found with darthcacher1 and purply.
Only 172nd find for a cache that is almost 20 years old! I guess due to the unique location... Easily found by Vanjeans, down the suspicious worn out pathlet. TFTC
We didn’t expect to go geocaching today, but when we reached the view point we knew there would be one nearby. Sure enough, D followed his nose and found the cache!! Easy to find, rehidden well, trakable taken. Tftc!
Found this without even knowing it was there. The little path leading off the main route is soo worn out, I thought it looked suspicious. No decent internet, so plan ahead if you're on a mission for this one. Dropped a trackable. Tftc
#7667. Today the rest of the family decided they wanted to go to a movie. I was keen to pick up some more geocaches in Auckland and decided a trip to the Hunua Ranges was called for. I have seen this cache showing on my oldest North Island cache list so many times and decided I needed to find it this trip as I am working on getting as many of the pre-2005 NZ caches found that I can locate. So headed down this way and parked in the carpark. The cache is not really that far from the carpark but does require a bit of a hill climb. Still its a lovely well formed track to GZ. Once there I followed a geotrail under the trees and spotted the cache immediately. Great it has managed to last so long as its not far from a place that must get a lot of muggle visitors. Signed the logbook and replaced the cache as found. Thanks Liz, Steve, Katherine and Tui for hiding it here and giving me an excuse to do some hiking in the Hunua Ranges.
After taking in the view near GZ we were about to enter the bush and look for the cache however rather than being 15 metres in as per the description we saw it sitting on the ground right beside the lookout seat.
Not sure how this happened but we are very pleased that we came along today and that it wasn't seen by muggles and removed. It would be such a shame for such a historic cache to end its life in this way.
We have re-hidden it as per the description at the base of a tree and really hope it lasts.

Great slog uphill to the viewpoint and nice easy find. In good condition and nice and dry.
Day two of a weekend in Auckland with my wife. She loves to geocache, I keep her company.
A nice walk with a nice view. I lovely old geocache.
JDScout had a conference in Auckland for part of the week so I met up with hem on Friday night. Hopefully we will find a few geocaches on this trip as I haven't got many left to find in Christchurch.
Thanks Liz, Steve, Katherine and Tui for placing this geocache 7660 find for me.
Sadly there was no large event in New Zealand in 2019 but there are a few Mega events planned in Australia. New Zealand will have another large event in 2020 in Auckland.
======== NZ Mega 2020 ========
Planning for the NZ Mega 2020 event is well underway. It will be held in Auckland over Labour Weekend, 23 to 26 October 2020. Thanks for hiding this geocache.

Targeted this cache while on a work trip to Auckland, to fill a missing space in my Hidden Month grid. Interesting to see the Kauri dieback warning signs, but keeping to a geotrail is almost the same as keeping to the trail?! Found after short search; it’s back to an ice cream container. Thanks for keeping this old cache going, another hidden month down!
Went for a lovely walk out at the Hunua Ranges with a new friend, who was keen on learning about geocaching. This was a nice and easy introduction for them - cache wasn't particularly hidden haha. Not too far off the trail, and cache was in good condition with lots of swag. Tftc
We didnt let the rain and wind stop us getting out for a walk. Cache all safe and well not too covered so an easy find. Tftc
Today was the secound day on our way to the south island. We spent the night at Kaiaua Boat Club freecamp after we drove down here from Dargaville yesterday and had a nice morning walk along the shore before heading to the Hunua Falls. On our way we stopped at the Shellbeach to collect the Earthcache there. After visiting the Hunua Falls we stopped here on our way to Coromandel to pick up this old cache. Once at the start of the hill I made good progress and after a short but fast walk I found myself at GZ and quickly located the cache. Signed the logbook and rehide as found but added a bit of leave litter ontop as camo. Tftc.
I was so close without spotting this for a wee while! Eventually I changed my angle of approach and it was quiet visible..... finally! Cache was in great condition, I added some leaves to cover a bit more and continued in my way. TFTC!!
Found as a part of a previous group TanjackMüley, aka WanderingSparrow. Now I'm continuing on my own. TFTC
Surprisingly not that concealed but still fully intacked and muggle free. Also surprising that it's been a few months since anyone has logged in the orange book. Picking up a pathtag from Georick that I'll document later too. Also, cool 1965 NZ Half Pennies in there.
Out for an adventure today. Our friends from a YouTube channel called Cache Canada have challenged us to find a 2001 geocache somewhere near a waterfall. They are making a video of one near them in Ontario, Canada and we have chosen this one to film. We are then putting the two videos up on YouTube. Its a nice day to film even if the cicadas are very loud and our microphone is picking them up big time! Dropped our path tag. Nice hide. Thanks Liz, Steve, Katherine and Tui
In the area with Merlot58 and Pazza2 and the geohounds, we crossed the swing-bridge and headed up the hill, chorused by the cicadas. After checking out the view from the seat of the Hunua dam (where we had walked the previous week), we headed into the bush to find the cache. It wasn't long before the cache was located and we were back on the trail. Great to find this old cache!
Great to see an old cache like this still going! We had a lovely walk to get here. Tftc
What a lovely track this is. We saw some interesting insects on our way here and after admiring the view of the dam Pazza made a nice quick find here.
This was one of my main targets today. Had a really nice walk up here. Many thanks for this cache

Out for a walk to the dam with little rebel and muggle. We are taking advantage of the fine weather, its the school holidays, and we hope to find a couple of caches along the way
The track has had some serious track maintenance for the Kauri dieback, New grit laid down, so no mud seen on our way to the seat with a view. Who said anything about steps, they have been a surprise too.
As to the cache, I think I was very lucky, as with old caches the co-ords can be off, under the trees the GPS can be off, and the hint was well hmm?
Very happy to find, and I have included a photo of a log by a muggle!
Thanks for the hide Liz, Steve, Katherine and Tui, and those that have dept the cache going, its a beautiful spot to explore.

As this is one of the oldest caches around Auckland it has been on the list for a while; today on a beautiful winters day we set about to do the short walk around the area to garb this and a few others. Initially walked past the cache and eyeing up possibilities down the bank, when I turned around and it was sitting there right in the open. Glad to see it still here and in good condition; placed back with a little more cover on top. TFTC.
I used that sunny and nice weather to do a little hike at Hunua falls. Last time I have been here the bridge was closed because of a helicopter operation, today the way was free.
really glad to find such an old Cache here. Thanks for carriing for such a long time! Could Sport it quick.

Out and about to find some caches for the planetary pursuit souvenir challenge. Found together with Piratenschatzsucher! und Pyphant. TFTC
Nice hike in the Hunua Ranges on a beautiful day with some caching on the way. Nice big cache. TFTC
Strolling around on Easter Monday and collecting a few caches around this area. This was a little bit hard to find, but Pyphant spotted it, while I was wandering around in the wrong spot. My smartphone was bouncing around. Could have been like the needle in the haystack, but it turned out to be OK, since the container was not camoed. Cache is in a good condition, it is a black Hokey Pokey Ice cream container by the way, the log is a little bit moist though. I threw out the chocolate (!!!) and put the log book in the plastic bag instead. A little bit further down the hill it gets pretty steep, there's no need to go that far in order to find the cache. TFTC
I left work a little earlier than usual which I had enough off at the moment. So I had decided to come here to do a small bush walk and collect a few caches around this area. I didn't realise the climb up here to this cache from the swingbridge was so steep, I was wearing my jandals and probably should have donned my boots. Never mind, I huffed and puffed upwards. I found the seat first and the view across to the dam which was nice, took a rest here for a minute then onto to finding the cache. I relied on my GPS to get me there, but the co-ords seemed a little out to me. I searched severall spots that could hide a cache but eventually had to widen the search and then I saw it glaring at me, how did I miss that big container as I walked past it?
So nice to clock this golden oldie up and this cache was the main reason for coming to this area today. Another one for the Jasmer challenge done now.

My GPS is not good under tree cover, but GPS took me into the bush terrain 4 and was still pointing 3 metres further into terrain 4.5, so I gave up on trying to find this one.

I could not believe my luck!!! Just after a couple of weeks of having been up north, I got an unexpected invite to AUT, with an opportunity to come up the weekend before (=do some caching!!). With flights and accommodation sorted, I was more than happy to invest in a rental car for the weekend I headed south-ish to collect some specific caches and catch up onsome I missed out on last time. Just a quick up and down here, and now I understand the title - I could only find it looking back Great adventure, TFTC!!
Nice find, thanks. Took the Geocoin 'The Travel Express, TEGP7A' from this cache, but the code leads to the wrong trackable when searched! We will keep looking or pass the coin on if we have no luck.
Cache number 3369. Arrived at the seat near GZ and heard voices coming along the track. Took my pack off and started a sandwich. A father and son arrived and after a short chat the father asked me if I knew about the cache nearby. It turned out that as the CO lives overseas he has taken on the role of the cache guardian. He took me over to it and explained how the local rangers were happy with the geocaching in the park and had even given him a waterproof pad to use in this cache as it was always filling up with water. I was the first to sign the new log. After signing I carried on my way and they went in the other direction. Once back at my car they passed by and they also caught up with me when I was at another cache where their car was parked.
There are still 38 caches in NZ older than this one but it is so nice to see these old caches continuing and a special thanks to those that maintain them. A fav point from me.

Tftc. Felt good to be there when our oldest cacher found the oldest cache we have ever seen. Well done dad nice effort . Left tn for the effort
Tftc. Out with Pricefamily6 today on a trek to the hunua's. Well it was terrific to beat the young'uns to this oldest cache I've found to date. Hint was good but GPS wasn't so cooperative due to tree cover.
It was a nice walk at the end of the day. Cache found after a short while of searching.
