A great day to see the glacier in full sun. Had visited previously in August and there was too much shade. TFTC
Wow!!! Awesome views of the Rob Roy Glacier, and My Aspiring. This was a great hike up the valley alongside the Matukituki River and its tributaries, fed by glacial melt, also forming many waterfalls. OCW MaxAdventurer and Baxter360. TFTEC looking4thebroc
What a wonderful walk this is. Seems like signs have changed along with the track upgrades. I started googling for answers but not sure that is what CO wants. I have messaged answers such as they are but thought I’d post so as to attach photo. Thanks for placing the earth cache.
Called in for this one after a couple of great nights at liverpool hut..awesome area gets a fav of course
What a nice place. After a quite long driyand a few ford's crossed, little cacher was super excited. When we got out, it was already hot, and the sun was burning (almost midday). The first part of the track was strenuous because of the heat, but once the bridge crossed, the tree shelter was great. We enjoyed our walk, sent answers to CO. Definitely a must do.
Today we decided with my partner David to enjoy our Friday off together outside. During walking Rob Roy Track I really wanted to dust my geopassion so I have decided to find all answers due to no more caches around even I am not a big fan of earthcaches .
Look great from valley, but path to glacier viewing point, and also to the cache is closed.
Stayed a couple nights at Cascade Hut and popped on by Rob Roy on my way out. Beat most of the crowds up and then left as the constant stream began. Beautiful, loud place!
#3920 We did this hike with our children, very nice trail and view. Thanks for the cache, greetings from Czech Republic.
We could find this earth cache while traveling through New Zealand. We did the hike to Rob Roy Glacier today and it must be said: the way to here by car was the most adventurous we had until now on this island. The hike was not that hard. We didn't have a great view on the glacier because of the clouds, but the wind playing with the falls made it fun. Thanks for this cache!

Great hike and spectacular view. Thanks for this interesting EC!
We found the cache "Rob Roy Glacier (Earthcache)" during our road trip through New Zealand. We started in December 2018 at Auckland and we'll travel with our campervan to the very south. The landscape and nature is overwhelming . It's always a lot of fun and a great adventure to go for this hobby in our vacation too . Thanks to the Owner "looking4thebroc" who placed the cache and his maintenance in the future!!!
At this place of the log, I would like to put all the best regards from Aalen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany in this cache as well [^].

Today’s target was the hike to the Rob Roy’s Glacier view. According to the information we got from different sources, this should be an easy hike. Finally we were glad that we had decided for this “easy” tour, because it turned out to be more exhausting than expected. However, the scenic view at GZ compensated for all the effort.
Thanks for showing this beautiful location!

Set out for this 2hr stroll with daughter and boyfriend to find it was a 4hr trek but so well worth it. Absolutely brilliant. Beautiful sunny afternoon. We heard 3-4 small avalanches with some shifting of glacier edge - awesome. Phone is GPS these days so not good n photo. Answers sent. TFTC. TM from N Wales

Looks like we are the first geocachers here this season!
Took us 1:45h to get to the upper lookout from Raspberry flat. And 1:30h for the way back. So just over 3 hours return. That is excluding the almost one hour we spent up at the top of course
Initially planned Isthmus Peak track was substituted by this one for today because GM's ankle is still in recovery from a sprain.
Still a bit long but supposedly much easier, this walk. But what a beauty! Waterfalls, waterfalls everywhere! If you like those then this is the No.1 glacier access walk in NZ, I think!
We had a picnic up around GZ, no keas in sight. I was looking forward to them trying to steal our goodies maybe they haven't yet come out of their winter retreats?

On a fine and sunny day we had a great view at the glacier. The track was beautiful but we missed the Keas.

Stunning views and well worth the hike. Glad to make it up here on such a nice day. TFTC
This was one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever done and a true highlight of the New Zealand trip so far. Definitely do not turn around after the lower viewpoint, go all the way to the upper viewpoint where this cache is! You will not regret it!
We were visiting this mighty glacier today and enjoyed one of the best day walks in NZ so far. It is so amazing to see all theses waterfalls pouring down. TFTC. Answer sent to CO.
A stunning walk up to the glacier viewpoints! Not too warm for the climb up, and not as busy as the Tongariro Crossing! TFTC
What an adventure to mark our 30th earthcache - in all we ended up spending six hours “tramping” up and back, stopping for lunch, photos etc. Legs sore, view sensational. Thanks for bringing as here and excellent description of the route. Tftc
Great place, I'm glad that we decided to go there. Pleasant hike with nice views. TFTC
Close, but no cigar. I’m here south of the bridge in Today’s Borrowed Cachemobile, a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL prototype. We’re here with special permission. I’m unable to take the time to do the hike, though. I’m gutted.
This was quite a little adventure, especially the way to the carpark! I was not sure about the big fort 3 km before the carpark, so I left my car there and had some additional walk however, better be sure!
The way on the track was really nice and I had great views up there!!

From Wanake we took the road which seemed never-ending to reach the Trail Head. Fortunately our hired campervan managed to go through all the fords. But the trail to Rob Roy Glacier was well worth the driving effort. Perfect sunny weather that day, beautiful surrounding mountains, valleys and rivers. The highlight of course came at the end of the trail with spectacular views to glacier, waterfalls and the mountains tops. From time to time we saw and heard some small avalanches which was an impressive (and daunting) experience. Another highlight was this earth cache, great to have it there and very informative!
Thx

This hiking was a bit exhausting for us, as we already walked A LOT on the previous days
But the view on the glacier is really rewarding..
I had to make some search to answer the questions of this Earthcache, and I learn some things in the process.. I guess that was this is all about, so TFTC !

Today we started our way to the rob roy valley and the road became difficult quite early. But we managed it and also the hike to the upper lookout. Quite nice views we had on our way;-) Answers were just sent, Hope they're ok.

Enjoyed the hike to the viewing area for Rob Roy Glacier inspired by the awesome scenery on a beautifully clear day. Gathered the information and emailed answers to the CO. Thanks for a fascinating and very scenic Earthcache looking4thebroc!
Walked up to the glacier. Was misty when we arrived but cleared while we were up there so we had a great view & also saw an avalanche. Have sent answers to CO. TFTC
After our planned trip to Milford (via plane) got cancelled this morning we found ourselves re-arranging our plans for the next few days and decided to rush off to spend a bit of time in Wanaka. The weather on this side of the mountains was fantastic (despite the wind) and so we decided to find a nice half day hike and headed up the valley to see the glacier. Didn't quite realise how long the gravel road was going to be, and or what condition it would be in. But, thankfully we managed to get through all the fords in our little camper. We arrived so late that initially we thought we might just have to do the easier walk in the valley due to the recommended 4-5 return time on this hike. But once we started we decided to make the most of the opportunity and headed on up the hill to at least see the glacier from the lower viewpoint. The walk went much quicker than we expected despite the fact that we're not exactly in prime hiking fitness anymore and once at the lower viewpoint we, of course, decided to push on towards the upper viewpoint arriving 1h 15mins after we started from the parking lot Needless to say, it was all worth it.... Great hike, fantastic view!!!

After a long walk and a lot of photos to access both lookout, Ninalila and I observe the landscape to gather information about this earthcache.
It is a great moment to take some pictures too and enjoy a few avalanche. Small ones (maybe because we are far from the glacier), but really loud noise
Thank you for your interesting earthcache and the nice walk

This earthcache was a adventure !
fefe.adrien and I drived one hour on a gravel road, crossed several rivers to ford with a strong flow , discovered in the morning that it snowed a lot during the night, + avalanche and landslide alerts by the DOC on the path...
We took care a lot about meteorological conditions during these days. But it worth it, I mean a lot !
The snow was just perfect to take beautiful photos with the blue color of the river and finally it was possible to climb until the second lookout with care.
Suddenly a big noisy surprise : a serac fell down from the glacier, the falling caused an avalanche ! Fortunately we were on the opposite side ! Quite scary but stunning to see it. Enough adrenaline for today, we decided to go back quickly before the night. On the return, we met guys including a geocaching player, funny^^.
+ one favorite point for the discovery

Beautiful sunny day for this hike. A bit of snow on the final stretch but not too bad - not that many other people around either. All in all an excellent day to be out here to enjoy the fantastic views. Thanks for the cache!
After staying overnight in the Liverpool hut [no cache in that area ] i made the detour to the beautiful glacier altought it was a bit cloudy it was possible to see them.
Great view to end a great walk

Staying in Wanaka for a couple of days as part of our South Island road trip and thought we would go out walking today. The Rob Roy track sounded like a goody so up we went. Weather was beautiful and the walk was really nice. Great spot for an earthcache it definitely deserved one and I enjoyed learning about glaciers as I never really knew much about them before, have never been this far South and we don't get many glaciers in the North! Thanks for the cache
We are part of a bushwalking group from Australia and were out hiking in the Mount Aspiring National Park. This Earthcache was on our route. The area is a wonderful mixture of remote wilderness, high mountains and beautiful river valleys. It is a walker's paradise and a must for mountaineers.
Love the area, the glacier and the views.
Thanks for the Earthcache.

We walked up the Glacier on our last day in Wanaka. Amazing views. We were not so lucky to see the avalanches, but we were lucky enough to admire these wonderful views of NZ. Enjoy a snack on the top while you admire the views, worth the effort!!
Also, I learnt how horns are formed with this cache, really interesting! Actually I discover some of the formations of other peaks as well

We had such a delightful trek to Rob Roy! Truly one of New Zealand's nicest walks!!! If you get a chance, DO IT!!! Pure beauty and leisure. Thank you Rob Roy and thank you New Zealand! ...we couldn't be bothered with earth cache technicalities, but here are some pictures from our perfect day
Dec 14: dipping a couple of TBs we discovered in our possession, to trigger their kms
We woke up early, intent on visiting this glacier and hopefully finding this earthcache. We arrived at parking in the pouring rain and thought that it might be déjà vu all over again of yesterday. But, no, the rain stopped and a rainbow invited us in to high country. Mesmerized, we followed it for at least 1.5 km. After that, only one word can be used to described the hike - breathtaking and stunning and spectacular !!! The views near the final platform were amazing! We enjoyed an early lunch on the rocks and, for our entertainment, got to witness 4 avalanches off of the glacier. We debated whether we would be safe if a certain section of the glacier chose to release and decided we "should" be OK but who would really know. We collected the info needed by the CO and reluctantly tore ourselves away from the scene. Thanx for adding to the fun and interest of this amazing place. Gets a fav for sure !!!
This was quite an experience, and probably the most beautiful place I have ever seen. It was a long drive down an asphalt road, that became a 2 lane gravel road, that became a 1 lane gravel road, that became a 1 lane gravel road with fording (I needed some encouragement from another driver to attempt one of the crossings). We began the long, wonderful hike up. Such a sight! We spent about an hour and a half taking it all in and listening for the ice cracking in the distance before heading back.

Lovely winter's day trip to one of our favourite spots. Left a little later than intended and the sun went down at the co-ordinate spot just as we arrived - 2.00 pm. Still plenty of daylight as it is only the steepness of the surrounding terrain with the sun set time for this region closer to 6.00pm this time of year. Snow on the ground for the last few hundred metres but easy enough to get around. A good track and having an earth cache to "get" just an extra reason to got there. Thank for the knowledge gained.
We did this when we visited NZ in Feb/Mar 2015, thanks for this! Kind regards from Australia.
Beautiful hike, amazing view! Rob Roy Glacier is so much nicer to visit then Fox Glacier... Unfortunately I don't like answering questions, while hiking, so no found for me.

Spent a great day walking up to the base of the Rob Roy glacier. Some extraordinary views. No keas today which was a bit disappointing.
Day was a bit tarnished by a fall and gash in the leg. Meant for a bit of a slow walk out and stitches at the very friendly Wanaka Medical Centre later in the day. Despite the gash it was a great walk and I am grateful for the case being placed at this site. Also grateful to learn something about glaciers as well.

Enjoying a fantastic 3-week summer road trip around the South Island with our kids: weather has been kind thus far & spectacular views everywhere we look. Arrived in Wanaka to spend 2 days with friends, celebrating Christmas, & thought this track would be a great way to walk off a very indulgent day yesterday. Seems like a lot of other people had similar thoughts, as we met quite a few people on the track today. Easy to understand why it's so popular though. Great walk & great views today too, despite some cloud over the glacier, with the added bonus of a cache, yeah! Much as though I'd love to stop at every possible cache on our 3-week adventure, the agreed plan is a few quality finds each day or risk mutiny from the rest of the family who don't share my sistema-obsession. Earth-caches are an obvious choice for our must-do list & this was no exception - stunning views today & the added bonus of a 'find' despite the many muggles wandering around the meadow at GZ. Really enjoyed our walk today; a bit more leisurely than usual as we had the kids with us - 3 hours' walking and about an hour exploring, picnicking & taking photos at GZ. Just fantastic. Pics uploaded and answers emailed to CO, thanks heaps for the added incentive to come up here & Merry Christmas! A fav for us, TFTC.
Together with smellfooth I went the day before to the Hut were you can see Mt. Aspiring. It was a pity, because we arrived in the evening and in the morning we already left the place for walking back. But there was a highlight as well: the ascent to Rob Roy Glacier. Great scenery in a great landscape. We found all the information and took many pictures. Thanks for showing and for the EC!
Yesterday, together with silli1310 we went to the Mt. Aspiring hut. We sleeped there after a nice walk through the valley. This area seems to be quite beautiful for exploring and hiking. Unfortunately we planed to stay only one night in this area, so we had to hike back after a short walk near the end of the valley. After returning through the nice valley it was enough time to climb up the step path up to the Rob Roy Glacier. The sun was shining so we stayed couple of hours at the end of the track to enjoy the scenery, which was amazing. After finding all the answers, which were send by silli1310 we went back to the car. Thanks a lot for this interessting Earthcache and the amazing scenery.
A wonderful spot. As a bonus, I got to see my first chamois. A great Earthcache, thank you.
What a fantastic walk and an incredible GZ. This walk was on our list of must do's for this trip, and we were almost foiled when we checked the doc website and found the track was closed on the 2nd for air based pest control. The weather would have been great for the walk that day too! Luckily, as we were coming back through Wanaka today the weather was good again so we made the trek up. It was cloudy when we started and when we got to GZ there was still a lot of cloud around, but it came out sunny while we were there. We sat for about half an hour just appreciating the location, many thanks for one of the most impressive earthcaches we have done.
Perfect weather for one of our 'must do again' walks. One of our family stories is the time we brought the children up here (it was a much longer walk in those days!) and were talking about not feeding the keas. But as Rufus was holding a sausage and about to start eating it one kea whipped in - and grabbed the sausage right out of her hand - and then perched within sight eating it and laughing at us.
It turned out that the calm fine weather was also perfect for a 1080 drop over the Matukituki, and the carpark was swarming with DoC rangers warning us off. Hey, no problem as long as you don't eat the pellets or get hit on the head by the drop (the walk is in bush)? The drop in Rob Roy was just finishing - we saw a couple of hopper loads dropped and then the helicopters disappeared over the ridge. A ranger was at the viewpoint keeping an eye on the crowd of tourists.
So lunch, marvel at the cliffs and glacier, take the photo of TBs while a puzzled foreigner watches. Saw no kea at all this trip! On the way down passed many more people coming up - such a popular walk nowadays. Also another DoC ranger with tool for scooping up 1080 pellets, but for some reason he hadn't cleared any off the track. A great walk, and the earthcache made it even more enjoyable thank you looking4thebroc.

Absolutely mindbogging beautiful place! We missed Fox Glacier because of excessive rainfalls but this more than compensated it! tftec
We were looking forward to this trip to New Zealand.
After hours of flight from Belgium we finally arrived, picked up our Road Trip Special and started going.
First we organised a little event to meet the locals. It was a blast and we've met some nice people!
After that we did a whole tour around the South Island in 3 weeks, sleeping in the car or our tent.
It was great!
When we read about the fords we weren't too keen to do this walk as we only rented an older 2WD car.
The ranger at the nearby DOC centre convinced us that is was very doable when the weather was good so we went for it
After a fun 30km gravelroad to the carpark with about 9 fords it was already clear that we made a good choice. The views are just stunning.
Coming up here was very rewarding. We were already impressed on the lower lookout, but the upperlookout is really great! After the necessary pictures and rest we did the earthcache requirements and went back down.

During our wonderful travel from Christchurch to Steward Island we stopped here for a break. Lovely spot for a cache. Many thanks for showing us around. We have been here one year ago and it's always great to come back, such a beautiful place!
Sorry for delayed log of your cache. I was long time on the way and without good conection to the internet. Thanks for nice cache on good spot.
What a spectacular place! Really enjoyed the climb, and the views were amazing! Despite the heavy rain in Wanaka (and the scary drive in over the surging rivers), the sun was shining on us most of the day. It made for a nice quiet trail, with only one or two other trampers out.
After 6 months in this great country tramping around everywhere, this was one of our favorites, thanks for the EC!

Finally found time to do some online logs of the Geocaches I did in 2014! Visited this earth cache on a nice and sunny Saturday and had a pick nick lunch at the glacier lookout. Very nice location and enjoyable walk. Found together with PurpleDragonFire. Visited by TB5J5HF (The Boldly Cache Explorer).
Logging with permission; had a great walk up here, in a gap in the 'summer' downpours! Walking late in the day is recommended for avoiding the crowds- a steady stream of people coming down the track.
We had a fantastic day on this track. Even the road to the startingpoint is wonderful. We enjoyed it very much. CO thank you for this wonderful cache.

I think the Rob Roy glacier walk is the best day trip in New Zealand. The variation of a lovely drive up an alpine valley, the walk through native canopy alongside a mountain stream with the native birds and a high likelihood of seeing a Kea, the alpine parrot, and finally emerge out into the magnificent cirque with all the waterfalls capped by the glacier itself is truly stunning.
While having lunch we even heard then saw a huge chunk of ice fall off the face of the glacier and come crashing down over the granite face in a spectacular exploding avalanche.
Thanks for this great earthcache, it deserve a 'favourite' from me.

On Mt Iron I met a guy who wanted to come here and was looking for a ride. So I decided to change my plans and do this hike instead. The good thing is, this way I met a climbing partner.
Beeing Swiss glaciers aren't such a novelty to me, but they're still always beautiful.

Visited the Rob Roy glacier on a perfect day. Many thundering ice/rock debris falls from the snout of the glacier.
Absolutely stunning walk up the valley to this glacier and the views didn't disappoint. The 5hrs return was a little bit overstated - it took us 3 hours round trip I think including the 15 or so minutes we sat in awe at the trail head.
Lots of people coming in as we were leaving and there is quite a bit of track washouts along the way including an impressive rock that balances over the track precariously - DOC says not to stop so we certainly didn't!!!

We’ve made this cache a favourite, despite the considerable effort involved in getting there. As well as increasing our education, it was certainly a most scenic location to visit, and a kea came and sat on the information board about keas for some time. Was it intentionally posing for the many photos which were taken? It was somewhat ironic that in an isolated location such as this, there were about 20 other people at the glacier viewpoint while we had our lunch there, German, Tahitian, Swedish, Australian, and on our return trip, we passed another 50 or so people heading towards the glacier. I enjoyed this one. TFTC. Caching with Linleye so you might recognise the photo!
Logged with permission (and same for Claw who was with us). This cache is a great reason to get out of bed. The walk and views are so rewarding. We shared the track with many other groups, some with very young children. By the time we got back (after a leisurely 5 hour trip with lots of stops) it was extremely hot and we were grateful for the cool river and aircon.
Logging with permission. Had a great day doing this tramp with a picnic at the top. Awesome weather. Took some great photos but having trouble figuring out how to upload. Cheers and TFTC.

We were not sure of the weather, but set out for the walk up to Rob Roy Glacier. However, the weather was kind, and improved as we went. As it turned out, we were the first of at least 30 people up there that day - they almost need traffic lights on the track!! The track is now a wheel-chair trail compared to my first visit.
Took notes at the bridge, and arrived at GZ to get the required photo. I have been here before (15 years ago), but geocaching was a recent incentive for another visit. I did note that the glacier was much smaller this time compared with my first visit. Perhaps in another 10-15 years there will be no ice in sight at all - what a shame. But that is what we must deal with when looking at things on a geological time-scale.
Still, whatever the ice looks like, the walk up this valley will always be a magnificent excursion into our wonderful mountain world - a world where kea cry from the free open mountain-tops, waterfalls tumble in thin cascades blown wide by the wind, and the hard dark rocky ramparts challenge both the eye and the body.
Without a doubt, I'll be back here one day.
Many thanks and cheers from Grandalf(2016)
