An interesting history behind this. I have drive past this placw a few times and never noticed it before.

Yes what a big container.!!!

This is a lovely short stroll through the bush to the grave site. I am amazed at how good the railing is after standing there for over 100 years. Maybe the bush has protected them from the weather.
Well, finding this cache was difficult for me, when it shouldn’t have been, so I am not that happy with myself!!. Round and round I went looking at all the half trees – half stumps and ignoring the one that had water in it (as per the CO’s log). I just could not find the cache despite there being lots of half trees - half stumps. In the end I asked for help and duly received it. I returned later in the afternoon and went round and round again with no luck until, just before I was about to give up, I decided to bend the body again and move some overgrowth. Guess what I saw? A SPOW with the cache container underneath!! TFTC andy.gail - for me a tricky cache that shouldn’t have been!!! Favourite given.

29-Nov-21
Well that took some hunting! Perseverance paid off and uncovering a lot of overgrowth.
Walked here from Richmond cemetery and plan to do the loop up to Hill St.
TFTC.

27-Oct-21
Checked today and still all good. Not in a puddle stump. Added new logbook as old one damp.

This geocacher reported that the cache might be missing.

Heaps of the stumps are filled with yuck water need checking

I needed a find to fill my calendar to the x14 level, so, even though it was raining, I came over to get this cache. Nice size for the cache. TFTC.

18-Jun-21
Stopped by to rescue a TB which has been here since last October.

24-Nov-20
A hidden little gem. So hidden I drove past it and then came back to snag and tag this one. Cheers.

Awesome! Its a fine day here and in Nelson, so Toby and I headed over the hill for some caching, shopping and the most important thing, the event hosted by the Birthday guys. Picked up Bullertrouts Bro and went exploring for a few hours. Great weather and great time. Cheers

26-Oct-20
Great wee track through the Bush, fun find. Left be find a track able

18-Oct-20
Second cache today, and it was a quick find of a previous DNF. There has been a big cleanup through here from the last time I visited, and that helped. Plenty of stumps showing regrowth around but I eventually found the right one. Thanks Usakiwi and Andy.gail.

A short trip for some local caches while RG1972 went out for a run. So I drove around for an hour or so and got some nice caches including a former DNF. Thanks all.

08-Oct-20
Very cool location! Never would have known anything about the founding of Ranzau or that this grave was even here without the cache! TFTC!

18-Sep-20
Nice bit of history here tftc.

Been meaning to do this for a while. Out on a wet day getting a few more caches to increase the finds for the day. A little dismayed by the undergrowth but thanks to description/hint located. TFTC

Found while caching with ABL973. Thanks usakiwi adopted by andy.gail

12-Mar-20
Well this was a good surprise! Last night I was looking at the map out this way so I could do a bit of caching today. On approach to GZ it was appropriately 'spookyish' for daylight and so I took my time exploring in the cool shade and reading about the pioneer. Given the tree cover I found the coords and hint quite good but it still took a bit of searching. Thinking about how it could be hidden worked for me. I had plenty of encouragement too from the local pīwakawakas. Thanks for hiding this usakiwi and to andy.gail for keeping it going. Have a favourite point.

25-Dec-19
Checked and after big search where we trampled down a huge amount of weed, we found cache exactly as hint describes.
No maintenance needed

14-Dec-19
Nope, no luck for me today. Will be back.

11-Sep-19
Found with Team jfp3435. Sl. Tftc.

26-May-19
Great cache, plenty of treasures!

07-Apr-19
That was interesting!!
Thanks so much for all the information.
Originally from Germany I just moved here four weeks ago, after spending three years on New Zealand's South Island. I have heard a bit of German settlement, but this was way more detailed.
Took some Bush bashing to find the cache. Nice sized container, no pen inside, so byo.
Thanks to the owner for placing, maintaining and most of all for the interesting information!

10-Mar-19
Interesting read about the Pioneer and took a reasonably search but once you find the right area pretty obvious that it would be that one. Cache all in good order, TFTC

10-Mar-19
Found with Tregearp after a nearby event. Found the GZ quick enough but quite overgrown and several items meeting the Hint description in the area but got there in the end.

Thanks for bringing us here and the cache andy.gail.

22-Feb-19
Staying for a few days in the Nelson and able to pick off a cache or two. Thanks, usakiwi/andy.gail, for placing your cache. All good and safe.

Thanks

27-Jul-18
Cache adopted, with permission, by andy.gail from 25/7/18.

Cache check - Found cache not quite in correct position. Dried it out and put in a new log, which is in a plastic bag inside a pill bottle, inside original container. This should keep it nice and dry. Replaced cache as per hint.

19-Jun-17
Nice hide Smile

12-Mar-17
Early morning walk after the rain had all stopped. Another slice of pioneering history only discovered through geocaching. Thanks for the cache.

12-Jan-17
Came here on suggestion of runner going past on Hill St. Nice place for a cache. Hope the person looking after the land might clear the track a wee bit sometime. The cache contents are getting pretty slimy so the new replacement log is great. Thanks for the history and the cache. Really interesting.

06-Jan-17
Have often driven past here to visit friends and seen the footbridge on the way but have never stopped. Having a cache in here gave us a reason and tonight was the night. Got to the gravesite to see the neighbor working nearby and he came over to talk to us. He told us some of the history of the grounds and house and that he had recently moved in. The plot of land the graves are located in has no ownership but cannot be purchased as is below minimum size. The neighbor told us he was possibly looking at 'adopting' the land so it could be tidied up and replanted with natives, making it a fitting memorial to the Kellings who are buried there. This being the case, we told him about geocaching and the cache hidden there. He is now aware that people aren't up to mischief if they are wandering around and he will take care not to disturb the cache in his cleanup.

02-Jan-17
Nice quick quick find. Log totally sodden so replaced with waterproof log and bag.

TB missing from cache - seems to happen a lot lately.

Another day trip into the Nelson region with the Aniseed Valley trip through to Hackett Track top of my list of must do caching days, for now. Backed up with a trip to the Grampians up to the Lookout it had all the ingredients of a successful days caching; 2 Earthcaches, a few puzzles, 2 possible new D/T combos to try and advance the grid filling a bit more, and a smattering of Traditionals to keep the numbers ticking along nicely. Back in the co-pilots seat was the Seagnoid also hoping for a couple of unique D/T combos, we'll see later if he was successful or not. A nice early 0700 start as we've lost a bit of evening light already so making the most of daylight hours when they are about.
Second cache of the day and after entering through the wrong gate I soon traversed towards the grave site and spent a moment reading the headstone. After a bit of a hunt I came across a nice sized cache and all was good and replaced as found. Added in a T B to continue it's journeys, Light in the darkness phone.

[green] On a geocaching road trip with capperz, except that we spent most of the time walking Big Grin. I love going bush!
But first we had to get there, so a few caches along the way, like this one.
Okay, maybe this one is going bush too! We got the entry wrong and entered via what turned out to be a private mandarin orchard. Nothing ripe, alas. A bit of bumbling around so had to resort to using the hint.

07-Apr-15
Cute hide log is wet TFTC

08-Mar-15
nice one. i would never of come here if i was not geocaching.

On a big mission up to Nelson over Show Weekend with Purdiepurdie, Karma Reprint and Team_Gaters we signed our cache finds as PKTT the 'power packet' but we called ourselves the 'G4'. We headed off on Friday morning at 4.30am and made our way to Nelson today. We drove heaps, laughed heaps, found heaps of caches and poke our noses here and there. It was a great day we didn't stop until about 9.30pm for a cuppa and relax and getting ready to do it all again tomorrow!
What an amazing spot. Took a bit to find.

Thanks for the cache.

TFTC. Out to play for the weekend with the destination of Nelson. Caching crew on board were Karma Reprint, Team_Gaters and TheWanglers, logged as PKTT for this trip. Gosh did we have fun looking for caches, most of which we found, in this very beautiful part of our country.

A quick park and grab on the road trip from Christchurch to Nelson. Thanks for the history lesson.
Thanks usakiwi for placing the cache.

usakiwi seems to have developed a niche in the cemetery/church category. I'm enjoying them. Thanks for this one.

5000
This was one of the most epic weeks ever, and definitely my most epic caching week ever.

Me and mum headed up on a holiday north to Nelson and very wider surrounds. In total during the trip, we found almost 500 caches! (470 odd I think, but final results are yet to be in! ) We covered about 3000 odd km I think too. Crazy! And had our absolute best caching day ever too at 160 found. Spend 9 days travelling, caching, and having the best time ever!!

So sorry about not so epic logs, as otherwise this would probably take me the rest of my life to log, especially with two big events to organise coming up! Eeek!!

Almost every single log we signed as 'Team Polak' to avoid needing to write out both usernames taking up space on logsheet - as well as precious caching time!! Haha.

This was it - one of the caches on our big day Smile

Consec caching day # 702

Turns out, this ended up being cache number 5000! That was unexpected! Wow!!! 5000!!! Not a bad choice for one though - as I do enjoy me these cemetaries and pioneer history!! Wow!!! 5000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TFTC!! Smile

For the sake of sanity Wink we set off with sonia26642 for a crazy geocaching trip, aiming to cache until we drop. The main destination was Nelson and the ‘surrounding’ area, but then we ended up covering a few miles in three northernmost regions, plus a few in Canterbury. We were signing/stamping the log as 'Team Polak' or ‘TP’ for the two of us on this trip to save logbook space. We found a lot of different caches, city ones, road side, park side, up a hill and on an island, and we enjoyed every single one of them. It was good to be a professional thingfinder for a few days!

Today was to be our biggest day. S planned the route to cover the most possible easy to get P&G’s but we ended up not limiting ourselves to only those. D2.5? Why not? Let the brain have a bit of fun! D3? I am sure we can get there quickly! Razz

We had great fun and are grateful to all CO’s who placed caches for us to find, and help restore our sanity before returning to our other non-geocaching lives!!

Come and join us the next New Zealand geocaching MEGA event!! Register your interest now at www.nzmega2015.com to receive newsletter updates and be the first to know. It will be a great event, come and be a part of it!!

Another hidden little gem found through geocaching, I wonder how many people know this is here. Luckily all quiet on a weekday morning as the GPSr was not co-operating and had me going round in circles before deciding that GZ was over there.
Good to find a nice big container as have been finding mainly micros lately, left a TB. Thanks for day #113 of my streak.

#7970. I had stumbled on this location while out street walking, and thought it would make a good spot for a cache. Turned out there was already there. A quick find. TFTC.

26-Jul-14
It was too nice a day to not go caching. We decided to head out towards Brightwater and see where we ended up. Would never have had any idea this place existed if not for this cache. Easy find once we got to GZ. Thanks for showing us yet another, new place!

Who'd have known this was here except for people who live close by and the Geocaching community. Excellent location. Thanks for the hide here. Something learned today.

Thanks usakiwi, We would never have have found this place without you. I knew about Kelling but not that he and his family was here. Somehow the overgrownness gives the area a peaceful and special atmosphere which you do not get with a mowed lawn cemetery. http://www.geocaching.com/images/icons/icon_smile_cool.gif

Not too far out of the way grave yard but you would never know to look at it. Well overgrown and it took a little search to find the right hint. Liked the mini forest. TFTC

Vielen Dank für den Cache, thank you for the cache Smile

hay cool i like the way it is hidden Smile thanks.

One of the caches on my hit list for our trip to Nelson was BGSc 101: Contain Hers. I had worked out earlier in the year that I qualified, unfortunately I lost all the data on my hard drive and when I went to rewrite the list I couldn't get the dates to work.

So I had to redo it and make sure the last cache was a regular sized container. Did a quick search of those available in the Nelson area and decided this one looked perfect for the job.

Made the find even more spooky and harder than usual by doing it at night time by myself. I knew when I came across the fenced off graves that the cache must be close by. Even with the hint I searched a number of spots before I found it.

Thanks for the cache and for bringing me to this interesting spot.

Today I Went for the 100 caches in 1 day. With a very early morning and just breaking even at lunch time with 50, it looked like it was going to be 12am to 12pm. But after a move out of the city they started to speed up, and i managed to grab the last at 20:30 with 106!! Thanks everyone for the caches that they have placed, from the ones that have been planed for months to the park and grabs Smile
