Found at 12:53 PM GAFF1.So 13 years, 1 month and 2 days later we are back! Drove in from the highway and didn't bother to lower the tyre pressures as it was just a few hundred metres in - well it was touch and go in a few sandy spots especially on the soft bends, but the Defender performed admirably and just powered on. Got to within 90 metres and then walked the last bit as it was quite rocky ground and during the walk noticed a huge pile of fuel rusting fuel drums which a mate of ours reckons was from K89 - a military exercise called Exercise Kangaroo 1989.Got to GZ and of boy was there a deja vu moment there! Looked in the fissures and of course once again missed the cache as I was looking for a cache "container" After a few more goes around I started to be more careful and also waited to get my vision adjusted from the brightness to the darkness in those fissures and low and behold - I spotted the vampire!Co-ords were spot on btw. Thanks to Bushies2
WA Big Trip Winter 2024. Day 125 - Kununurra Day 2. Today was a day around town and the close area. I was happy to find some DNFs from may last visit in 2018. I was glad there were not too many long walks, but the Mirima National park is always great and the Gardens of stone area was fun driving and one short walk. My final stop was the Ivanhoe crossing. The water level had come down a bit but it is well and truly closed still. Still pretty hot all day, I am glad there was a pool to cool off in a few times. I cooked dinner at the van tonight and will be off to Timber Creek tomorrow. The next three caches were out in the city of stones area along some very sandy tracks. I was happy two where virtually drive bys and only one a 100m walk. There were three well themed caches that are well worth the effort of a visit. Thanks for the cache Bushies248953.5 TNLNVisited: World Traveling Gold GC A#6 & 2018 El Dorado Compass Rose A#377**Albida**
Found neatly tucked away after spending too long not looking at spoiler pics... Nice. TNLN-TFTC!

Heading north with richlink on our way to Darwin and beyond enjoying the spectacular scenery and finding a cache or two along our route.
As richlink had previously found these caches, they headed back to camp while we negotiated the tracks conducting maintenance where necessary. Thanks Bushies2

A late log...
We decided to park the geovehicle roadside and adopt the sandy walk option, good choice, pretty rugged tracks...
We enjoyed our afternoon walk through these spectacular rock formations, the sun highlighting the Kimberley red, searching for the clever cache containers, we managed to find all 5 in the vicinity, too much unlove on this cluster of geocaches, TFTC's Bushies2

Found it within a couple of minutes. Was a great 4WD track and a beautiful view in late afternoon. Thanks!
We were ready to give up on this one as it was getting dark when I decided to read past logs. Used the photo from Jacobowen27 to help and after a bit of fiddling around (not a fan of holes that could hide a spider or serpent) I came up with the dreaded vampire. Actually he's quite cute. Difficulty could be higher. TFTC
Find 5 of 17 with 1 DNF on an action packed day, with a whirlwind tour of Kununurra and then out to Emma Gorge for a fabulous walk/swim/meal and return under the stars.
Set off walking to join these 5 caches up together and even though it was only about 9am it was pretty warm. This was much tougher than we expected but we did it, with a lot of scratchy bush bashing and not much track walking. Amazing landscapes all around and some good finds. Expected a tough find but this was looking straight at me and the first place we looked. Very nice cache indeed.
TFTC Bushies2!

Took longer than I liked but we’ll worth the visit. As if frozen in time. TFTC
This is our third visit to the Kimberley, a place we love and always have a hankering to return to. It is a place of amazing beauty and adventure.
On our last visit we cached quite seriously, but still left the area with a number of unfound caches. We were 4 years less experienced, and sometimes you are just blind and have no luck.
We remembered looking for a number of caches in this area on our last visit. It was fun driving the tracks, but we found it difficult to get to GZ for a number of the caches and then when we did we were frustrated in our attempts to find them. We think we only left with 1!
It took two of us looking thoroughly for a while before we found this one. Love the container and the place it was hidden was quite appropriate.
We suggest that a D/T rating of at least 2.5/2.5 if not higher could be appropriate. Both the hide and the terrain had some challenge

My last day in Kununurra before heading back to Canberra in the afternoon. I had been planning to use the morning to gather some caches, so was glad of the lack of rain. I wasn't about to test my hired soft roader on the tracks (especially after rain) so enjoyed a good walk instead.
A short walk from the track through the grass brought me to the kind of rocky hiding area I was getting used to. I did think this could be a tricky one, but luckily I very quickly spotted something that looked worth investigating - it was. TFTC

We headed off this morning towards Kununarra to have a couple of night with friends there and of course the journey wouldn't be the same if we didn't stop for a few caches along the way.
The sun was setting but it was far from dark so we thought that it would still be safe to go and look for a vampire. This time the sand was a little thicker and the weight of the camper trailer nearly ground us to a halt but we were fortunate that the old girl managed to chug through.
This one took the longest to find, we went round, up, down, over and Diane went back to a place I had already checked and just said "what's this" as she dragged a dreaded vampire out of it's hidey hole. Fortunately the sunlight kept it subdued and we were able to add our name to the log without losing any blood.
Many thanks again Bushies 2 for the cache.

Tftc. Thought we would snap up this set before doing the dinner shopping tonight. 3/6 super cute
Hi there Bushies2 - while stopped in Kununnura during our 2016 Northern Adventure TWO decided to let me have *another* day out by myself to pick up some caches that were too rough for her to accompany me. This was our find number 4135 - SL. Thanks to Bushies2 for the cache.
Pity we didn't have time to grab them all.
Beautiful place, thanks for the tour.
And the geocache.

Our current visit to Australia had been in the planning for over a year with the very significant help and advice from friends who live in Melbourne. The original plan was for a 2 month visit, but as things progressed we just couldn't help extending our trip to the full 90 days allowed on our visas - after all it's a big country and so much to see and do, especially with our favourite pastimes being birding, hiking and of course geocaching! Our journey started with our arrival at Perth airport followed by a day cycling around Rottnest Island before travelling on to Adelaide where we met up with our friends. We then continued on to spend some time on Kangaroo Island, before heading to Melbourne via Goolwa, Strathalbyn, Coorong, Mount Gambier, Cape Bridgewater, the Grampians National Park, Port Campbell, Cape Otway and Lorne, cramming in as much as possible on route. The second leg of our journey was a fabulous 9 days in Tasmania. Having then returned to Melbourne we set off on the third leg of our journey, which was to Sydney via Wilson’s Promontory, Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Pambula Beach, Thredbo, Canberra and Fitzroy Falls. We then spent a few days in Sydney with geocaching friends efore flying on to the Gold Coast for the fourth leg of our travels, that included visits to Lamington National Park, Noosa and an overnight trip out to Fraser Island. We then flew from Brisbane to Cairns, where we spent a couple of nights before heading out to the birding hotspots of Yungaburra and Daintree. Following on from a visit to Cape Tribulation we turned to Port Douglas. After a day out on the Great Barrier Reef we returned to Cairns for the flight to Alice Springs and the fifth leg of our travels, which was a wonderful week driving the circuit to and from Ayers Rock in our 4x4 camper. On returning to Alice Springs we then flew on to Darwin, where we picked up another 4x4 camper. We are currently making our way towards Broome via Kakadu, Cooinda, Katherine Gorge, Kununarra, Lake Argyle, Emma Gorge, the Bungle Bungle’s and Fitzroy Crossing. Our last two nights in Australia will be spent in Broome before we fly back to Perth, from where we will connect with the flight all the way back home to Zimbabwe via South Africa. We already know we can't wait to return!
Once again geocaching took us to another fabulous location - this time the "City of Ruins", that we wouldn't have visited or even known about had it not been for geocaching. We also had a great deal of fun on the 4WD tracks, having successfully disabled the highly restrictive big brother tracker in our 4WD hire vehicle that Britz has untold boundaries, for despite their so called "No Boundaries" logo - to the degree that we wonder why on earth they rent out 4x4's when they don't want the vehicles to do what they are built for or go where they are made for! - still, always nice to break the rules and use our 4WD hire vehicle for what we had hired it for! At Ground Zero the Vampire soon emerged from his hiding place as a couple of warm bloodied humans approached. Log book signed before he could bite then back to his hidey hole he went. Thanks so much for another great cache and please have another favourite point! Fav point

This one took me a lot longer than I should, going to the wrong side, just as others have done previously, but eventually I found it!
Today we visited the City of Ruins a stunning location that we would have visited if it was not for geocaching. We enjoyed the cache containers and adding to our favourites.
Thanks Bushies2 for placing and maintaining this cache for our enjoyment.

Good one Bushies 2! I think I managed to avoid any blood being sucked, although after, I noticed a cut on my arm, so maybe ..........?
Hahaha loved it. Adinahubby nearly had a heart attack when he found this one. Thanks for bringing us to this very interesting area. Despite the recent fire, still worth the 4wd trip in
After a bit of fun out here yesterday trying to manoever the bulk of the geomobile around the twisting sandy trails, I had left a couple of caches unfound [:o]
They could not remain that way though, and today I returned to the City of Ruins on the pushbike
A very nice and scenic ride out from town [^]
No pushbike is ever going to cope with the sandy tracks !!
So I dumped it in the long grass and set off on foot to find a Vampire and some Kimberley Rocks
A couple of circuits of the rocks produced no caches
Maybe I still smelt of garlic after finding the "City of Ruins #2" cache yesterday [:o]
A closer crawl around on all fours and minus the sunglasses helped and a few minutes later I had the blighter in paw
NO!! Keep away from the neck !!

This was our 7th cache find in a caching run of 8 Finds & 0 DNFs today.
We found it at 10:48 so this now makes our total find count 6956.
[blue]
Once again the Geo-Jeep handled the terrain very well. High grass hampered our view somewhat, but a preview with Google satellite view did help though.
[/blue]
Coordinate Accuracy: Excellent (Around 2 metres).
Cache Condition: Container and log book are in good shape.
Took: Nothing.
Left: Nothing.
Thanks Bushies2 for the hunt today.

“1CADFAY”, (1 cache a day for a year).
Kununurra WA
Another “Rest Day” today, lol, a bit of a contradiction of terms, ha ha. ...............
We returned to the caravan to drop off our shopping and get some lunch for the kids and we then went off to look for some geocaches in an area known as the City of Ruins . We found one of the access tracks into the area and drove in onto a narrow sandy track bordered by very tall straw dry grass and scattered around the area, barely visible were little sandstone towers of the crumbly banded bungle like rock. We chose a cache and navigated towards it along the track winding in and out through the rock towers, over soft boggy sand, carefully picking our way through by climbing up rock shelfs and fallen tree trunks across the track, down into steep sandy creek beds and back up the other side, it was pretty tough going at some stages. We chose a cache “Vampire, GC287KW”, and set off driving around the tracks to get as close as would allow then set off on foot to find, this was a fun cache container and the kids at first were a bit scared but soon realized it was harmless. We signed the log and moved on to the next one “Charlotte lives here! GC287ME”. This one required some more difficult driving but eventually we found a suitable place to park nearby and got out firstly to look at the awesome views from on top of the rocks and then went in search of the cache. We had trouble pinpointing this one as the coords were a little out and was trying to send up to the top of a very high and impossible to reach rock so we resorted to the spoiler photo and soon found its hidey hole. I sent Chloe in to get it and her reaction and the look on her face when she picked up the rock that was sitting on it was priceless, lmao. We signed the log and carried on.
Our next one on the list was “Cave Man, GC287FM”, with more driving around in search of a suitable spot nearby to park and a bit of a bash through 2m high dry straw like grass and over rocks to finally get to GZ, a quick search revealed another clever container. It was now getting quite late and we went in search of another one on the way out but ended up driving around in circles trying to get closer, as I didn’t want to go bashing through the long grass too far. We ended up leaving that one and drove towards the road looking for “City of Ruins #2, GC1TCBG”, I was getting a bit frustrated trying to find this one and while I was looking for the spoiler photo Charlie found it straight away, well done again Charlie. We signed the log and headed out intending to go back to the caravan park. There was a bright full moon rising up over the rock formations and Jacki wanted to get a photo, I thought it would be good to go to “Kelly’s Knob Lookout, GC1KEPN” to get some photos. The last couple of days had been overcast so we were not able to get any good sunsets, today was a bright sunny afternoon and from the top of the lookout all the surrounding hills glowed a fabulous bright red and orange, highlighted by a full silver moon rising in the east. While we were here we put out a replacement container for this cache as it was not to be found last time we visited. We then returned to the caravan for an afternoon cuppa and then it was time to prepare dinners and retire for the night.

This gets a favorite point for three reasons. Thank you for bringing us to such a lovely and interesting spot, Its nice to have some easy caches in areas that have the harder ones for those of us who are not very fit, and most of all for the fun and effort gone into this one. TFTC
This was our second attempt. First time round, made it out here surrounded by long spear grass. Whilst searching (playing with spear grass as you should NOT!) sliced finger... Put pressure and kept searching but the vampires were haunting us. Blood not enough to draw them out. Blood still pouring out, worried we were going to get sucked out here so travelled the km back to car. Were the Dingoes on our trial? and then the sight of smoke arising close by. Not a good day to Geocache. 5 stitches later... So here we are back again. All burnt out this time, no chance of injury. Pouring with rain - no chance of fire. Fourth degree found straight away. TFTC Bushies2
Searched for this one for quite some time. Was just about to give up when something caught Geodads eye and with a little shifting of rocks cache was in hand. Thanks Bushies2 for a groovy cache.

Having been beaten at Kimberley Rock I was more hopeful here. It was not unwarranted as I found the cache before long in a logical spot.
Thanks to Bushies2 for putting out these caches to highlight the area.

Found on the way back from rescuing a bogged 4wd. Don got a fright when he found it! BYO tweezers for the log book.
Our third cache hunt in this area for the afternoon. It didn't take us too long to get to GZ but hunt as we might, even with the advantage of the spoiler, we couldn't locate the cache. The good thing was that, if the coordinates were as accurate as had been for the two previous caches, there were few possible hiding places. A systemamtic search, moving some rocks and there was a reflection - was it mica in the rocks (unlikely in this geology) or . . .. Yes it was and what a surprise when the cache was extracted from it's cave. A great preseentation of a cache and a great hide. TFTC Bushies2. The light was starting to fade and we decided to rearrange our plans for tomoorow to return to attempt the remaining three caches in this great area.
We loved the hide and especially the novelty value - it was a fun cache to do. thanks Bushies2
STF: Quite a good one! Loved it! Thanks to Bushies2 for bringing me to this interesting cache and the beauitful location.
