09-Feb-24
It's a long time since I have been in here. It's a lovely walk with impressive views from the tower at the top. Checked the cache and replaced with a new container, waterproof logbook in an inner container, and a few trinkets. Ready for visitors!

22-Jan-24
On our road trip back home, we collected a few selected/random caches. We stopped here to quickly grab this, but sidetracked ourselves first with the multi. For some reason I told junior what type of tree (incorrectly) we were looking for. So we spent the next 20 or so minutes looking around all the wrong ones, which was very frustrating as it had been found earlier in the day. GPS was a bit jumpy in the trees also. Started from the top again taking it real slow and found the cache fairly promptly. Everything was pretty soaked inside as the previous finder had mentioned, so couldnt sign log. Have supplied picture as proof. Thanks edvern

Needs some maintenance its full of water beautiful view. TFTC

21-Jan-24

We also stopped here on our tour of the North Island. After enjoying the beautiful landscape, we also had time to find a few caches. Many thanks to all the owners for the caches and for showing us new and interesting places.

19-Jan-23
It was fun catch the Jar was cool

04-Jan-23
With the Geotour coming to and end soon Yvettetb and I decided to go on a road trip to collect Tahi and Rua. Of course I had some puzzles at various places to collect and a few special types were added to the list too.

This was our 4th day. We'd stayed in Taihape last night and todays plan was to get closer to Palmerston North collecting my unfound SHIELD puzzles on the way. We eventually made it to Fielding after a sucessful day.

We were doing the PWGT cache in this reserve so we walked ip to this one. Loved the tower at the top with the very appropriate windchime. Interesting to see the town layout. Unfortunately the cache was wet. Thanks for your cache to encourage us up Mt Stewart Smile

Our North Island Roadtrip from Whangarei to complete Tahi & Rua of the NZ Geotour - Day Four

Lovely walk up to the summit & a quick detour to collect this cache. As per previous logs really wet. TFGC

30-Dec-22
Cache is very wet. Thanks for placing. Enjoyed the beautiful trees on the walk up and the view wasnt too bad either

28-Nov-22
On a mission to do PWGT 2 caches in full and maybe some of Tahi ones too in the time I’ve allowed myself. There will also be some extras along the way to to make break the journey

There was a container of water nearby. With all the rain old log is slimes and not worth the effort to write in but some previous person has put rite in rain log sheet in.

Last minute decision to make the effort to get this one as rain clouds not about at present

15-Nov-22
Up from Southland with muggly hubby to revisit some old haunts and discover new places. Taking a leisurely trip and the caching goal is to complete PWGT2.
This is Day 3 on the road. Aiming for Motutere Bay
Having got almost to the top for the PWGT I carried on, climbed the tower and headed here.
Log book is sodden and slimy, but someone has left a waterproof strip so I used that.
Drained out water water I could and left on its side, a little further down the back side of the tree out of site of whoever uses the large water container.
Thanks for the cache angela&ian

Log too wet to sign

20-Feb-22
As with the other finders, it was a bit soggy. The walk up was nice but a bit harder than the 10 minute sign indicated at the gumboot area

20-Feb-22
#971 a nice brisk climb up got the legs working. A great lookout tower and great views of the town. TFTC

19-Feb-22
We spotted driving into town so decided to take a break. Great views from up here. Log is sodden so only managed a faint signature. TFTC.

15-Feb-22
Very wet, could write on paper with pencil. Nice view from the top. There was a white 20 litre, water container close to the actual cache. tipped out excess water from cache and covered with small twigs and leaves. Thanks for the cache.

30-Jan-22
It is a bit soggy, but reasonably easy to find!

A road trip to Taupo

This was a hot but lovely walk up and around Mt Stewart.
The cache is wet and was out in the open. So camoed it a bit better and attempted to sign it.

08-Jan-22
Cache is very wet but we really enjoyed the loop walk to find it. We came up here on a whim after finding the one located near the boot and we're happy to find another

08-Jan-22
Log very wet, struggled to log but we really enjoyed the find thanks

(# 6961) On a new years trip to see my brother in Tauranga. Grabbing a few caches while out and about. Walked up the hill primarily to get the PWGT cache but very pleased I did this one as I did not know there was a viewing tower at the top. A great view of the mountain from here. A quick find. Thanks for bringing me here.

31-Dec-21
First of several caches found today on our way from Taihape to Taupo. I went after this one on my early morning walk with the geohound. Took the clockwise approach to the tower, not knowing that it was probably less steep than going the other way. Took a moment or two to find the cache. Enjoyed the outing and the views from the top, including Mt Ruapehu in the distance. #4391. TFTC.

29-Dec-21
Popped down here after visiting all the Geotour trees. Log a bit damp.

Found on a road trip around the central North Island, targeting Geotour caches. More when I get home. TFTC

Stayed in Turangi for the night and now heading south. Have passed through Taihape so many times but not stopped to climb this reserve. What a wonderful lookout with views right over to Ruapehu. Initially searched the wrong tree but once I sorted that out the find was quick. Thanks for bringing here. Happy to add a favourite.

13-Oct-21
Wending my way from Taupo to Feilding today. Steady drizzle here this afternoon but hey there’s a Geotour cache to find and I’ll mostly be under tree cover!
A helpful hint for a quick find. I stood under the platform to admire what view there was rather than subjecting myself to more wet.

Another diversion from doing the multi. I like these size caches. Ka pai

08-Aug-21
8 August 2021 12:47. Headed up here to grab the info for the nearby PWGT cache, but I couldnt leave without diverting to find this one (and admire the views, that goes without saying). Headed up here, spotted a couple of trees of the required type and went for the most likely. Spotted the decoy object referred to in a previous log, then the real thing close by soon after. TFTC. Wish the nearby multi had been as easy- but thats another story....

19-Jul-21
I’m going to log this as a find though I’m not 100% sure … located the 5 finger no trouble and at its base an obvious container - but it was large and full of water - no log in sight - intriguing … did I just get my 11th find or my first DNF?

Either way appreciated the quiet bush clad walk up the hill on a grey drive home - thanks!

10-Jun-21
Thanks so much! Neat find

28-May-21
Up from Dunedin on a roadie from Auckland to Christchurch to get a good number of North Island PWGT caches and some others.
Had to grab this and check out the view while here to get the nearby PWGT cache. Gps took me to the wrong spot first. I told it to sort itself out and then it showed me the correct GZ. Thanks!

24-Apr-21
We have come to the North Island to do a bit of a whirlwind tour and find some of the new PWGT caches. We were in the North Island for our summer holiday only a few months ago and as it turns out many of the places we went to we are revisiting on this trip.

GK headed off to find this and the other cache in the area while I waited in the campervan as I am hobbling around on crutches at the moment and not really up to this type of terrain. He made quick work of completing the mission and even took a video from up at the top so that I could enjoy the views too.

Thank you for placing this cache and thank you for the smiley.

We pass through Taihape quite regularly and I've always wanted to walk up here. We stayed in Taihape last night so this was a good opportunity. Thanks for bringing us here angela&ian

09-Apr-21
Great vista from the top looking out to the mountains..thanks for great placement..found in good condition

08-Apr-21
Mild evening identifying plants that I learnt about from the last PW cache. Well worth the walk. Tftc

08-Apr-21
A nice quick find thanks. Passed this way many times and have always meant to make the climb. Today was too good an opportunity to miss.

Ms_KR and I flew up to Hamilton to catch up on family and a few caches, especially those in the new PWGT geotour. Day 3, Palmerston North to National Park. First rain of the holiday when we reached our accommodation!. We are looking at completing those in the Central North Island this holiday.

Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches. Cheers.

March has been such a busy month, but not so much with getting out and about to indulge in finding some caches for myself. So what better way to remedy this than have a few days away in an area not previously cached out?
Cue a weekend of touring around the Tongariro National Park in good company. Exactly what I needed, and a weekend that would see me find over a hundred caches, including getting my 4000th, as well as grabbing some of the new PWGT caches.

I was now on my way home after a very busy weekend indeed, but there's always time to stop for a targeted cache. It was mid afternoon, and the sun was really making me toil as I worked my way up to GZ. But as I've never been here before I was enjoying the different aspects of the views on offer. The cache itself was a nice and quick find at the final GZ, and encountering no issues with the container or the contents, the log was quickly signed and the whole thing replaced exactly as found.

Thanks for setting up and maintaining this cache, and sorry about the late logging.

23-Mar-21
What an awesome cache, definitely making the climb to the top worthwhile. Lots of great swag and very nicely placed.
We picked up a trackable to continue its journey.
Thanks angela&ian

Our 2nd day of 4 to collect all the PWGT series south of Auckland down to Lake Wairarapa. Today, I’m with FMZ in his 4WD and it’s been quite the mission so far.
Finally made myself get up this hill, I have been with others in the past and declined to climb up this hill. However, today I HAVE to come up due to the PWGT cache that lays up here somewhere. I’m in fine company with FMZ and so we kill 2 birds with one stone as you do. I found the cache and signed us in. Thanks for the cache guys.

Thanks angela&ian for placing this cache

It was another hot bushwalk on a beautiful sunny day...
Met a local maintaining the tracks and pulling out Old Mans Beard but he let me keep mine.

Day three of a five day North Island Pokai Whenua GeoTour expedition collecting all the geotour caches for PWGT Tahi and PWGT Rua. 3550km travelled over 5 days, 70 geotour caches found. Today we travelled from Turangi to Masterton via the Manawatu. Our group today consisted of Gorby, boneybruce and myself.

Hot walk up the hill today, and first time I've been up here. Great views all round though including to Ruapehu which was cloudless today. TFTC

07-Feb-21
Our first cache today was found in Marton, after caching in Hunterville, Whitecliff Boulders and Mangaweka we now arrive here - our last cache for the day.

What another amazing place this was. Being rather familiar with the CO’s other caches we knew we were in for a treat.

The climb to the top of the hill was enough to get our heart rate up but the tower at the top was well worth it!

Back down the hill we go to find some dinner before heading back to Whanganui.

Thanks again angela&ian!

06-Feb-21
We have always intended to stop and visit this cache but have never had the time. Visited today while in the area, great views from GZ. No problem with the find TFTC.

05-Feb-21
Every time I pass through Taihape I think 'I should stop and walk up the hill', and today I did. Fantastic views from here, TFTC.

01-Feb-21
Team BOP back together after a 3 month hiatus - this time hitting the Manawatu with our sights set on some Labs, some geo-art & everything else that crosses our path ??

We were due to be heading home today but the phone started pinging and suddenly the inevitable second tour was kicking off. We'd done fairly well on the last tour so we hope this one will go equally as well. It was a slow start as eventually everything was enabled and now we're heading up the country. This cache wasn't initially on our list but seeing as we were heading up here we surely had to grab this one as well. Cache found quickly and without fuss then we enjoyed a superb view from the lookout.

Cheers angela&ian & TFTC Smile

01-Feb-21
Heading home from great long weekend now to start the geotour. And a couple extras along the way. Cheers

I am logging using the Cachly app template so please excuse generic logging along the way. It’s just my way of keeping track, but I do genuinely thank each and every one of you cache owners for taking the time and energy to place these cache. Many Thanks for bringing me here. Cheers.

16-Jan-21

Smile Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I are on a bit of a Christmas Roadtrip to Ingill & back ... we'll be doing a few geocaches on our travels ... this being the 11th of hopefully many ... easy parking ... we had just done the 'Gumboot Cache' & decided to walk up the 'hill' ... that's quite a track for us 'oldies' but easily done ... although it would be nice if a bit of track maintenance could be done ... quick find & easily replaced ... TFTC ... TN:LN:SL ... #1,745 for us.

19-Dec-20
A quick easy find after the lengthy ascent. An impressive new tower with a good view. TFTC

We took the kids up here to stretch their legs after a long drive. We enjoyed the walk and the cache was an added bonus. We weren't fooled by the bread bag camo. TFTC

17-Aug-20
Today is a beautiful day. Frosty under a clear blue sky. After I finished work late mid-morning I had to decide how to make the most of it.
Accordingly I decided to make my way up the road a bit to Taihape to try and find GCKX5P. That accomplished I then came up to the giant gumboot to find the next Road Block on The Amazing Race (Wellington to Auckland) geocache that I started some years ago. Unfortunately that cache was Archived just over a year ago, but for my own interest I'm still hunting out the Road Blocks (waypoints).
Then I made a quick find of the geocache at that location.
As it’s not even 3 o’clock yet I thought I'd walk up Mount Stewart here to grab the last geocache in Taihape. Although I’m sure I’ve done at least one other here in town previously.
Walked the track anti-clockwise. There’s still a heavy frost on the ground despite the hour, and some of those steps are pushing the boundaries of being referred to as ‘steps’, but all good here.
And then I’m at the top accompanied by a couple of blasts over the town of a steam train whistle. That certainly brings back memories of previous visits to Taihape. I don’t know if it was a train or a local factory’s ‘smoko’ whistle but it’s certainly loud.
OK, back down the track again to the cache. There’s a couple of twenty litre containers of water here and a pest trap, and a cache in the CO’s trade mark two plastic bread bags.
Signed the log; replaced all and back up to the tower to take in the peace, quiet and spectacular views.
Continued on to the big galoshe along the track anti-clockwise. This side is almost wheelchair friendly although the last bit to the top is a bit steep and not stepped.
The trees on the eastern side were impressive, the trees this side are more so. Amazing they were spared the axe and saw. Nice to see they’re identified with name plaques and Nancy Adam’s artwork.
For me this was the highlight of my couple of hours in Taihape. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache. I’ve done a few of the CO’s geocaches now. All in interesting, adventurous places. Definitely gets a Favourite Point.

10-Aug-20
Found on our motorhome journey North from Blenheim. A bit showery but nice view of the town if not further. Thanks for the leg stretch up here.

18-Jul-20
Found it. Beautiful view from the tower

04-Jul-20
Got the heart rate up getting this one up. Great start to morning whilst visiting this cool wee town!

03-Jul-20
Down in the area with the MG Car Club. Driving Gentle Annie to Napier tomorrow. Enjoyed the walk through the forest here and the outlook, Nice hide. Thanks angela&ian.

15-Mar-20
Had just enough energy after the Gumboot Gallop funrun ( thanks ty the well stocked goodie bags!) with this cache as incentive, to walk up to the lookout. Nice track & views. tftc!

16-Feb-20
Replacement cache taken in today. It is wrapped in two bread bags so this should keep the moisture out. The new tower is great.

01-Feb-20
Day two of my road trip from Auckland to Nelson in my newly acquired convertible cachemobile. Finding a few caches along the way. Found as per the previous loggers notes. TFTC, Biggles.

13-Jan-20
This geocacher reported that there is a problem with this cache.

11-Jan-20
After a DNF / Muggled Out of the big Gum Boot area, carried on up the hill... Though dressed in our finest jeans (post dinner at the Rustic Steak House) we pressed on through the bush on the middle track. Made it to the top just in time for sunset on Mt Ruapehu, great views of the town and surrounding hills ️.
Found the cache but sadly needs a CO / helper visit to dry it out and replace the logbook. It was sitting in the open on top of some other liquid (water?) containers, returned it to a more Geocache-like hide.

TFTC & Cheers

Traveling from Rotorua to Upper Hutt and this was the sixth cache on my list. Note to self... it pays to check elevation and description before choosing footwear to do caching. As it turned out my not very sensible canvas shoes were actually okay today thanks to the lack of rain. Found the cache easily and the views from the lookout made the walk up totally worth it. TFTC

27-Dec-19
A little bit wet but great cache!

03-Dec-19
Quick found during the way to ferry to South Island.

26-Nov-19
The walk up was harder than the search - very easy once here - went to the lookout to see the sights - TFTC - log is vey soggy and needs changing.

31-Oct-19
Great view spot and a quick find. Nice little walk up there. TFTC

13-Oct-19
Quick find. Log soaking but unfortunately didn't have a spare with us like we normally do. Great view from the tower - a lot more houses than you notice when driving past.

07-Oct-19
In need of a family rest stop on our drive north, I remembered this "cache and walk" opportunity. We took the recommended for - from the Playcentre. Miss Three galloped up, Miss Six complained the whole way, and Dad found a cache at the top (oddly positioned between two drench containers instead of in the tree). Thanks!

14-Jun-19
Well worth the visit for the view. Tftc

08-Jun-19
Log book wax soaking wet so struggled to make a mark with supplies pencil.been meaning to pop up here for a long time. I imagine the views up to the mountain would be amazing on a food day. Sadly not today. TFTC.

Quick find after staying the night in Taihape. Lovely short, sharp walk up the hill to the cache.
