A nice walk around the loop. Less gruelling than the other hakarimata steps and far less busy. A quick find after pausing to admire the kauri. TFTC

On our secound day in New Zealand we make a nice walk to the Kauri Walk. On the way I found this nice cache.TFTCHennesAt the end comes the poem of the day.New Zealand By James K. Baxter (for Monte Holcroft)These unshaped islands, on the sawyers bench,Wait for the chisel of the mind,Green canyons to the south, immense and passive,Penetrated rarely, seeded onlyBy the deer-cullers shot, or else in the northTribes of the shark and the octopus,Mangroves, black hair on a boxers hand. The founding fathers with their guns and bibles,Botanist, whaler, added bones and namesTo the land, to us a bridleAs if the id were a horse: the swampy townsLike dreamers that struggle to wake,Longing for the poets truthAnd the lovers pride. Something new and oldExplores its own pain, hearingThe rains choir on curtains of grey mossOr fingers of the Tasman pressingOn breasts of hardening sand, as actorsFind their own solitude in mirrors,As one who has buried his dead,Able at last to give with an open hand.

My first cache on my first hike after arriving in New Zealand! Coords were a bit off, but its still easy to find without leaving the track! TFTC L from TTLL

21-Oct-23
Just before kilometre 736 of my walk along the long path Te Araroa today tramping between Huntly and Ngaruawahia and what a great spot to pull of the packs and enjoy a break at. Good seat and information but the real shoe is the big fella in front wowee what a specimen. Of course I would not be much of a c a cacher if I didn't make an attempt at the nearby ca he while I had the opportunity. Found a bit further north up the track than the Coordinates suggest but there's no need to leave the track at the right angle a cacher will see it from a mile away.Good cache Headjob in a top location. Nice one and thanks for making my day more fun.-- This log is trackable ! ---- Feel free to discover ---- Please mention, in which cache you've seen this code: ---- 3TABQX --

This was a wee way away from the posted coordinates but found in the most obvious spot after reading some previous logs. Too wet to write on. Tftc.

27-Dec-22
Had to be stealthy around muggles but found it. Bit further on than what hint suggested but it made sense once found. TFTC

24-Oct-22
Took us a while to figure out the spot as coordinates were off, great find

18-Jun-22
Four pairs of eyes. No luck.

TFTF took a bit!

18-Jun-22
Out on an adventure with NurseDr and the Stik-a-Cranes. Walked the full length north to south - would recommend this direction to get the gnarly parts out of the way first, especially during winter when we knew we would be finishing in the dark so was better to have the gravel path to finish on.

Looked everywhere for this and gave up resigned to our first cache being a DNF before NurseDr called out found it. Mrs Stik-a-Crane and I thought she was joking so returned back along the path to find it in her hand...yay!!

If you are heading from Parker Rd end and turn right onto the loop track at the intersection its hidden on the left side of the track quite a little way past the bench. Its reachable from the path itself so if you step off you have gone too far.

Thanks for the cache.

18-Jun-22
Headed down this way to walk the Hakarimata Walkway with Keylev and NurseDr, and it was discussed to travel from North to South, and given the amount of steps on the Southern end of the trail we made the right choice.......
Right from the carpark we hit stairs indicating this trail was to mean business....
Soon located the seat mentioned and what we thought was other items mentioned in the hint that also tide in with the co-ordinates, but had no luck...after a bit of time we decided to call a DNF, and headed off down the trail, when NurseDr called out found it...some 20m away from the listed co-ordinates....

Had a good hunt around but no luck Sad

Had to work out which direction. Had to wait for opportunity to look, a few walkers. Nice find though.

Day 30 of my TA Adventure
Time to head over the hill with a few stops along the way..
Decided to make a slight detour and do the loop track to so I could get this one...yes that's a big tree ..cache was a quick find ...picked up to..

16-Mar-20
A mighty tree. Also my thanks to the co for placing a cache accessible from the track. Sadly many are not so savvy.

23-Feb-20
Down from Northland for the weekend with the prime objective being to do the Hakarimata Trail. That was delayed a day because of the weather, so after doing the Waikato River walk yesterday in the rain and getting soaked in the process, was very happy to see the sun out today. Team G0LD met up with Jag50 and Merlot58 nice and early at the start of the trail and then we headed off to get as many caches on the way as we could.

Was busy taking photos of this magnificent tree, when the found it call came out. TFTC

23-Feb-20
A plan was hatched to meet up with 0B80B8, DaffyNZ and Jag50 to find some caches in the Hakarimatas so we left a car at each end and started at Parker Road. With 6 pairs of eyes we spread out and I soon made the find

23-Feb-20
Found with several pairs of eyes. Nice kauri tree!

23-Feb-20
We met up with Merlot58, 0B80B8 and DaffyNZ to tackle this walk. After parking a car at the other end of the trail, we made our way to this cache. Some of the group stopped to take photos of the spectacular kauri near gz, while the rest of us spread out to find the cache. It wasn't long before Merlot had the cache in hand - no need to leave the trail to find this one!

31-Jan-20
found it on a nice walk with my family. thanks fot this cache near the beautiful great kauri tree.

29-Dec-19
#651. Mr and Mrs Northwood set out to work off a little of the Christmas lunch, and achieved that! We have been this way before but not for a long time. It's a great walk, excellent view from the Upper look out.

Had to hunt a bit in each direction, but made a reasonably straightforward find. As others have reported, it's damp, but the waterproof paper meant we could sign.

TFTH.

27-Nov-19
We continue our trip north, today it's towards Auckland.
But before that, a few stops on the road and a few visits.

This kauri is superb and easily visible from the platform.

Thanks Headjob for the geocache [^]

We went for a walk in the afternoon. Beautiful weather and an even more stunning track. What an amazing Kauri tree!! The cache was easy to find with help of the hint. Thanks for hiding.

18-Apr-19
There is a fallen tree on both direction of the track... when we did not find it on one side, we tried the other other one and bingo!

The log is very wet. If you can bring a plastic bag and a new log.

07-Apr-19
Out for our first caching trip of the year wtih 1 half of vamber, Kirsten & Yorkshirekiwi83 with a short walk up the Hakarimata track.
Upon reading the hint more clearly we were able to have the cache in hand.

06-Apr-19
Heading out with Vamber and yorkshirekiwi83 to tackle some Huntly caches. We'd originally planned on doing the whole walk to the summit and down the stairs, but changed plans so we walked up to just beyond the south lookout. Initially struggled to find it, but after eventualy following instructions we soon found the cache, thanks

31-Jan-19
The Freezer Mice strike again!!!
Out for a wee walk today, and while at the top decided to see if there were any caches near-by.
Grabbed this one on the way down, didn't bring a pen, so took a snap of the cache instead.

Brotown found the cache, what an awesome walk

06-Jan-18
Our first find in New Zealand! Together with the De Vries family.

02-Dec-17
Had a pleasant walk this morning with my muggle hubbie from Parker Road up to the Kauri Grove loop and then up to the top. We collected a few caches (including this one) and then headed off to Hamilton to pick our grandson for a spot of babysitting this afternoon. Such a beautifully warm day - ideal for a hike and to pick up these caches although we ran out of time and will have to come back for the last few another time. TFTC Smile

13-Nov-17
Late decision to do this walk with Agazo turned into a longer than anticipated adventure that had us all glad when we finally made it to the end. After the initial climb up we hit long patches of stepping over, around and between roots and lots of muddy areas that made the track a little slow going at times. Can say we were all exhausted by the end but managed to get a great haul of caches that made the effort worth it.
Our first for the day and we almost had to give up on this one. Co-ordinates were not accurate and only found by chance after doing quite a search where we thought it should be. Found 20 metres down the track and looking at previous logs think it may have been moved?

13-Nov-17
The Bennett24s and I hiked from Parker Road to Brownlee Ave. The very beginning and end were fine, but the long middle section was slow going over massive tree roots interspersed with muddy sections. It took us much longer than we thought.
We searched for this one for twenty minutes and gave up. Gary used his Geo-psychic abilities to check one tree along the path and found the cache at S37 36.737 E175 09.039. We are not sure if this is the right place, but CO will have to determine this. TFTC.

Such a nice day to be out hiking, great tree!...TFTC

31-Oct-15
We made an early start from home this morning to join in a group walk along the Hakarimata track from Huntly to Ngaruawahia. We parked at the Huntly end and were soon joined by Pagenz, Trout-fly, Team Welsh, Yorkshirekiwi83 and avoyager. Up the hill we went and off for a long day of caching adventure and companionship. And it certainly was a case of UP the hill to this one. TFTC

31-Oct-15
With the help of facebook this walk was arranged a couple of months ago, thankfully the weather played ball. Team Welsh, kiwicouple, avoyager, pagenz and trout-fly and myself were signing as WH or Waikato Hikers all met at our dedicated parking spots and we set off for a wonderful days walking with plenty of laughs, plenty of out of breath moments, plenty of caches and incredibly wobbly legs by the time we finished.

We emptied the water out of this cache so the log was a bit wet. TFTC wow lots of steps to get to this one though!!

31-Oct-15
Plans were hatched, dates were organised, logistics of vehicles sorted and today was the day that Pagenz, avoyager, Kiwicouple, Trout-fly, Yorkshirekiwi83 and myself were to tackle the caches between Huntly and Ngaruawahia, Due to the numbers of teams in this merry band of cachers the logs were signed Waikato Hikers or WH. Truly successful day with no DNF's, lots of chat, laughter and more importantly getting Trout-fly out caching again after a 6 month drought. Many thanks for placing this cache and that is one impressive Kauri Tree.

31-Oct-15
"Come on out, you haven't been caching for a while", they said. "We'll just go for a walk to grab a few caches," they said. Hmmmm, I don't recall anyone mentioning a million stairs when we spoke....

A little bit of logistical arrangements with cars and cachers that made Eisenhower's organization of the D-Day landings in 1944 look easy and Pagenz, Avoyager, Kiwicouple, Team Welsh, Yorkshirekiwi83 & myself were off to tackle the caches between Huntly and Ngaruawahia, via the hills ... and the stairs. It was an excellent days walking with plenty of laughs, great weather and a good bunch of people. Thanks.

31-Oct-15
A big day's outing planned to knock off the northern half of the Hakarimata trail.
Teamed up with TeamWelsh, PageNZ, Kiwicouple, Yorkshirekiwi83, and Troutfly.
After a jiggling of cars to have transport at both Brownlee and Parker Rds, all was good setting off from the Parker Road end at 8.15am
This was the first cache we knocked off and was a chance to stretch the legs and puff the lungs out. Start as you mean to go on.....
Nice quick find here.
TFTC.

31-Oct-15
There can be nothing nicer in the caching experience then being out and about with good friends in some beautiful NZ bush with lovely weather to boot. The first find on our Loooog walk. T4tc

14-Sep-15
Found this one while on a holiday from our home in Whangamata. TFTC

11-Jul-15
With a sunny but cold weather forecast Travis and I decided to tramp the Hakarimata Walkway this Saturday to collect all those new geocaches on the Trail. We saw new logs of Boges & Zorgon and soon found them searching for a geocache Wink. We all found some together and met up again at the lookout to finish off the trail just around sunset. I enjoyed the mixture of creative puzzles, trads and letterboxes Big Grin.
This one was our first geocache and I have to admit it took some time finding it. TFTC

11-Jul-15
Joined up with alpenmilch80 on this clear, but chilly morning to hike the length of the Hakarimata walkway and find the new caches located there. We took the loop track first to locate this cache and it took us a little while to find! After applying the hint a few ways and in different directions, we eventually found a spot that seemed logical and sure enough the cache was located there. A nice spot and impressive Kauri tree - TFTC!

Nice find. Easy instructions

19-Feb-15
Legs a bit shaky after climb and descent from upper lookout. Good spot to sit and marvel at the huge kauri tree. TFTC

01-Feb-15
Off on a hike with PP - great area, have done this a few times before starting to cache, so time to collect the caches Smile New GPS was not behaving but the hint took us straight to the spot.

19-Jan-15
Day before this had been a DNF - had followed the hint in direction GPSr was indicating - the hint fitted too but was a bit like looking for a needle in haystack, so in the end after a long day of climbing many, many, many steps, I gave up.
After talking to a previous finder, I realised I searched in the wrong direct. problem is that the fallen one, can now only just been seen from the seat, if you know where to look. Also can barely ben seen through he Kauri grass from it own lookout - that's if you realise what the look out is for.
As I was in the vicinity today to collect a puzzle cache, I headed on up (I forgotten how many steps I would need to go up, legs were complaining) for a quick, easy find. TFTC

06-Dec-14
Fabulous location. Definitely worth a return visit. Glad my lunch bag could help with the waterproofing. What a tree!

06-Dec-14
An impressive tree, but wow, we really have to visit that big kahikatea on Pirongia now, after seeing its comparative height on the information board.
As noted by others, the cache was waterlogged, but I dried it out with my tshirt, having left the cache repair kit on the table at home. The waterproof log that Kiwitramper left has stood up well. We ate our picnic and used Tui10's ziplock lunch bag to put the cache in, but next time we may bring a more watertight container.
Thanks for giving us another reason to make the climb and for pointing out the fallen one which we probably would have missed as other plants grow up around it.

19-Oct-14
Had been 6 years since we were here last,at that point the other big kauri was standing, now just an empty platform viewing area remains, which is the only guide to where it USED to stand. found cache, a bit damp inside container [8]

07-Aug-14
Last time I was here it was just after one of the big trees had fallen, the scar was very fresh in the bush. Lovely kauri grove nearby. TFTC

06-Aug-14
wow pretty cool, Glad my friend suggested coming up for a walk today we walked from Parker Rd through to Brownlee Ave and picked up a few caches I hadn't all ready got.

26-Jul-14
Completed the loop track on the way down from the summit.
Nice tree, good to see a few decent ones still standing.
TFTC

26-Jul-14
Awesome tree and great to see a whole lot of young healthy Kauri growing too. Cache was good - thanks for bringing us round the loop. T4TC

26-Jul-14
Found while out for a walk enjoying this great patch of forest. Lunch at the top and then down here to grab this one. Great to see some really big trees. TFTC

11-May-14
TFTC! was quite a walk for someone who is used to walking on flat surfaces rather than hills haha

27-Apr-14
Found it no problem, there is no pen and the pad is wet due to the bag being left open and the container not done up tight and rain etc. needs another pad if you are heading that way. i will take one next time im up there if its not done already.

25-Apr-14
GPS was doing all sorts of circles here, but found it, there was no tb in it though... Smile TFTC

21-Apr-14
Decided to geo cache after leaving for walk so nothing to swap

08-Mar-14
Woohoo, we were on the Kauri walk, but had past this cache before I pulled the phone out. So, after going to the two top lookouts we walked back around to get this one. Nice and easy TFTC

22-Feb-14
201 A find on the way down. Good excuse for a rest

28-Dec-13
Nice family outing to do the Kauri Loop, difference in leg lengths made 14 steps interesting, but found fairly easily in the end.

02-Nov-13
Visited cache (already found it last Dec) last weekend as we started our walk from one end of the range to the other (12km, 6h 40m).

Added a few swaps. You'll need to bring a writing stick with you.

15-Jun-13
We needed a training walk today, and the weather was looking good, so decided on the steps behind Ngaruawahia. Took the lower route to the cache and found it easily. Sat and enjoyed the view of the Kauri, but surprisingly could still hear the noise of the traffic on the main road. Continued on to the Kauri grove, then on up the hill, where we no longer could hear the traffic!
Completed the loop with a detour to Mr Zeppelin, and then back to the carpark. Thanks for the cache here to encourage us to undertake this natural step aerobics course.

31-Mar-13
Our first geocache. Easy to find & a lovely walk.

10-Mar-13
Great specimen and lovely walk.

01-Jan-13
What a great old tree. Could have happily spent more time there looking at it and reflecting on all that has happened in the world as it has grown to where it is now. Very well developed path and steps up to it as well. TFTC

27-Dec-12
Found with 11hpg11. Co-ords were a little out for us - we had come form the higher lookout and found cache before we got to bench seat.

Impressive tree nearby.

Found on our down hill leg. Took a bit of looking and we were a bit worried about where we were meant to be heading but soon found it.

Lovely big Kauri.

18-Nov-12
Easy find.

04-Nov-12
Cache was full of water and logbook gone. Emptied out the water and left a waterproof log sheet. TFTC

15-Oct-12
Finally got around to going up the hill again, and the stairway, oh yes what joy.
Did not read the hint previously, (that is cheating), and GPS was all over the place.
Impressive trees, would have been great to see prior to logging
TFTC

14-Oct-12
Easy found just in between the rain showers Smile The trees are very impressive. TFTC

13-Oct-12
Should have read the clue properly, as jumping GPS cos of tree cover and a preconception of where the cache should be hidden took us to the wrong place initially. Got it in the end - and aren't those trees impressive. Sore knees walking down those steps from Led Zeppelin to get this one and return to the car. tftc

13-Oct-12
Found on a day spent caching with Geco72. GPS was all over the place due to tree cover. Read the hint before you go bush crashing! TFTC

it pays to read the gclues ..... before you go bush bashing Smile lucky wingnut rocks found this before i did.

Now thats a big tree fallen over....

22-Sep-12
Easy find, ran the loop after finding the led zepplin cache.

04-Sep-12
Got this after getting the other one nearby. Phew! Thanks. A little water as well, tried to dry it, and placed in such a way that it should stay a bit drier, still in the same spot. Had a great big spider living on the bottom...but he was nowhere near the size of the magnificent kauri, she was a beauty! Thanks.

21-May-12
Enjoy doing this walk, Done it a number of times now,...Cache full of water.

29-Apr-12
Fun afternoon 1st time caching without GPS; thanks for a great hint! Meant to bring a replacement log but then forgot, sorry. TFTC

Log soaked

12-Apr-12
My Gps was a long way out so had to use clue. Was then an easy find. Cache however was fill of water. Emptied out and added new bag and scrap of paper for log. Normally carry replacements with me but have run out. Next person may want to bring up small log

7946 One up, one down... enjoyed our excursion up to the Kauri Grove. Cache had some water in it, but the logbook was nice and dry in its baggie. Many thanks for showing us this awesome tree and its younger sibblings.

19-May-11
Took the day off work to do some proper walking without the kids in tow! This was the first cache of the day. Great place - nice to see the big kauri trees, even the fallen one, and the kauri grove a little further along the track is amazing too.
I don't remember seeing a TB in here? I may just not have looked properly though.

Nice straight forward find. Certainly a great Kauri. Thanks

06-Mar-11
Thanks for this wonderful cache. Taking us to this wonderful and most of all interesting place. We were here before, but now doing the caching, came back again. It's a pitty that you only have hidden one cache. Would love more of this before. We kept our doggies on the leash, to protect the kauri.

06-Mar-11
Nice easy find thanks. Only took about 10 minutes walk up to here, so I carried on up to do the rest of the loop. It goes up higher from here and comes out just shy of the lookout at the top. Well under the half hour all up return including signing the logbook and taking in the views at the top. Hadn't noticed the fallen one before, so thanks for pointing that out. A lovely circuit to warm the legs up on thanks

29-Dec-10
Those steps don't get any easier as time goes by, passed a couple of groups on the way up so that made me feel better.

A wet walk up the hill this morning under the umbrella. Have been up here many times over the years but hadn't realised one of the big trees had toppled over - very sad to see. Great place for a cache.
Many thanks
