Logs
We had pretty much no idea where to look after we found where the locations intersect. No luck. Some logs were saying things about digging???? Had us stumped. It took us about 10 minutes just to read gorby's log for clues. Anyway, would appreciate help.
( ) You better sit down Glyn, because you're in for a bit of a story! Initially I wasn't coming over to this side of the harbour, I had in mind a cache by supernanny on Parker Rd, just down from Scenic Dr. https://coord.info/GC9NA0E, but a strange thing began happening to my bike, it felt funny, it was feeling wobbly, got off the bike, and yes! Thge handlebars were turning by themselves with out the front wheel moving, flamin' heck I could have had a nasty accident.( ) So I changed plans, and pretty much walked the bike to the nearest train station which happened to be Sunnyvale, caught the train to New Lynn, walked the bike over to the bike repair shop and he fixed it in 2 seconds, all I needed was a 6mm hex key. One feature I didn't know about my bike, but now I do. ( ) So once repaired I headed back to the station, this time headed to Britomart instead and ferried to Devonport. Got a ph call along the way from the C.O, his back is reasonably OK now after the surgery. Got the ferry over to Devonport.( ) Weather all good today, so I headed here first, came to GZ, parked the bike and initially I thought the cache had gone, but was I really where I was supposed to be, So after a bit of good look here and there decided to ring the man himself, G-2, he confirmed I was absolutely in the right place, so then I had another proper search, even dug down just in case it might have been slightly buried, but just could not find it, so text the C.O to say so.( ) Then I left, but got a call very soon from the C.O and he said the whole area had changed, and the cache had gone, so he replaced it and said I could log a find seeing as I had done the hard yards. Thanks Glyn!!
This has been a long journey, starting with locating the various waypoints over the course of several visits. Even then I still needed a nudge or two to solve. It was at the time of my last visit that I reached out to the CO, who gave me another helpful hint, well ok, "did you read the cache page this time ?....", and so it was this afternoon I am back in the area and was determined to knock this one off today. Thankfully after a brief rummage around I was rewarded with the find, and can now conclude this mission as complete, thanks for the fun adventure.
Accompanied Lee to GZ for him to make the find after a previous DNF, explaining that he was looking at it in the wrong way entirely, all good here.
After attending the nearby event it was almost time to head back to my home office for some more tasks before the day was out. Being in the company of the CO led to a discussion about how poor my following basic directional instruction was and my realization that if I turned 180 degrees from my last poor effort I might be in with a shot of a find.
With the CO kindly accompanying me along to my already calculated GZ, I was soon with the cache in hand and glad to get this second of the cheeky quartet up this way Thanks for the cache, and the good company.

We only seemed to be able to find two photos so we had two options. After focusing on the wrong one we asked for help. With a bit of guidance we were able to deduce the hide and confirm it was still there
Avoyager and I came up with a plan - we were going to conquer the Game of Soliders by finding all of them today - first out of the gate so this one for Mr P and I. Thank you PAF for confirming we were in the right place - cache buried again! T4tc
Me and the children (Siko, Gulla, Vic; We all sign, but so far only me log on the net though I dip the childrens coins for rememberance. On small log sheets, the common signature might be SH++) went for a walk in the devonport neighborhood.
6 caches found; Two multis, three old dnfs fixed. Great!
Thanks very much for the entertainment, the walk, stories and maintenance!
An obvious favorite point is awarded to the last of the North Head multis

Our team found two of the pictures quickly, so half went to one likely spot, while the others got the third to confirm our guess. We figured out the correct way to see GZ, but didn't find the cache. Once the other half joined us, Mr. Bennett24 found a tool to help with the find and then actually found the cache.
We all wondered if the CO would make the last three searchers return to put their name on the log.

Out with Agazo, Bennett24 and tuolei to find this series. Had a great day on North Head on a wonderfully sunny day. Great to be back were we played as children. This one went smoothly until at GZ. Followed the directions but cache seemed to be missing. I was about to give up but no it was there and it was retrieved. Good team work. Thanks G-2.
Still out and about with GeoRick, Bennett24 and Agazo prowling North Head taking measurements and hunting for multis. Have to say, genius move by Bennett24 to print out the cache listings - that was an excellent idea and made it easy for everyone to see the images we were looking for.
We got two possible GZ's here from the measurements that we took and we split up to take a look at the options. Pretty clear after a bit that I was in the wrong team so off we went to see what was what at the other position.
This one made more sense and we could see where the cache was supposed to be. There was no sign of it as it looks like it was well buried but Bennett24 was not to be discouraged and took to digging and even found a suitable TOTT at GZ. Just has we was going to break through the Earth's crust he found the cache - an epic effort and we could go one better than the previous finders and sign the log. Replaced in a findable position for future finders.
Now, are the Westies going to be sent back in disgrace to sign the logbook?! Heehee.
Thanks for the cache - everything actually OK here!

We assembled a top notch unit today with Agazo, GeoRick and Tuolei to go to battle and claim victory over this series; it was a long and tiring war but we did ourselves proud with total annihilation of the enemy.
We collected a couple of the waypoints for this one and split up to search out several possibilities for the final. Tuolei and I after a quick search figured that we were at the wrong point so went to find the others who had a more likely area.
We noted the previous finders had not been able to retrieve this one, but undeterred I decided to dig in and actually found a plastic shovel along the way - which we had a good laugh about. Now a good arms length down and the team thinking it may be a hopeless task, I suddenly felt something and sure enough it was the cache - chalk up a major victory on this one. Cache was still in really good condition and has been placed back where it can be retrieved by others. TFTC.

The children and I back at North Head. Today we found all the position of all the images of this and the NATO multi, and tracked this one down to the most probably hiding place, unfortunately without finding.
Great series of multis anyway!

With Jag50 and Aiden29 on our 2nd visit to try and finally knock these multis off. Our first visit had us leaving disappointed with a dnf here despite a good search. We returned with some extra intel from the CO and had another look. After searching GZ and believing the cache was missing we contacted the CO who gave us permission to log as found.
With Merlot58 and Aiden29 we had returned to locate a number of Multis that were previously DNF. Returning with extra information from the CO we were shocked at the amount of debris that has washed over the area in the recent King Tides. It was deep and obviously this area had been under water. After searching GZ not once but twice and believing the cache was missing we contacted the CO who gave us permission to log as found.
Headed back out to North Head along with Merlot58 and Jag50 to finally locate the multis up here. Our previous visit resulted in 4 DNFs so we were hoping to turn these around. We had been searching in the right place the first time, but hadn't exactly interpreted the hint, so we didn't quite search in the exactly location. Tried this again and realised where GZ was, but even with all of us giving the spot a good look, we couldn't find the cache. So much debris had washed up on the beachafter the recent king tides. We contacted the CO who gave us permission to log as found.
Found on Boxing Day 2017. After dropping off my kids with their grandparents on Christmas Day I stayed at my cousin’s place and decided to tackle this interesting series of multis. I had last been to North Head over 20 years ago.
I spent about 5 hours in total wandering all around, backtracking and tiring myself out. I was starting to wonder whether I’d find any of the series when everything fell into place.
I absolutely adored the ‘secret’ path along the waterline. The whole experience was beautiful, magical and represents the absolute best of caching for me.
This cache was an absolute devil to find. I looked around for at least half an hour before I got my mitts on it!
Thanks so much for a wonderful day of exploration! TFTC

Due to increased enemy activity on our western front, Kiwiscots DEPCON level has recently been raised to DEPCON 4 (Increased intelligence watch and strengthened security measures). As part of our increased security measures it was decided by the powers above that the Kiwiscot forces were in need of extra training, infact a full-scale rehearsal of military maneuvers as practice for the possibility of upcoming warfare.
We decended on North Head and were quickly on Pvt. Jims trail. Soon we had infiltrated and secured the final gz. Upon initial investigations we were unable to locate Pvt. Jims Memorial cache. Radioed General G-2 for further instructions but no reponse (much like Pvt. Jim on that fateful night). Understood this to mean we were on our own and to use the resources available to us to complete this training exercise. Re-read the mission statement and this time followed the instructions to the letter and target acquired. Over and out.

Found while we were having a break from Christmas Day activities. Really enjoyed the hunt!

It's Labour weekend and I should be at the Mega in Turangi, but instead I'm in Auckland collecting caches before having to work tomorrow, well thats life.
So with a few things planned for the day, it was a chance to work my way around the city and see what I would be able to collect.
While the Good Wife was having a catch up with a girl friend I made a bee line for these couple of caches and had a good walk around here before needing to get back. Great to see so many people in the park. Took quite a hunt this one but got there in the end
Thanks for the cache, Thanks for the placement

This one took a while to find but we got there in the end. We found two of the three points easily and managed to figure out from that where it might be. The first place we went to was a miss, so we restarted, counted out the metres with strides and tried another direction. This time we found something much more like the description and began to hunt around. We were pretty sure we had the right spot but couldn't find anything so we got some txt help. Turns out the cache was right where I had been looking, but more hidden than what I expected. Thanks for another great cache!
DNF for us today. pretty sure I was in the right area but couldn't find anything although the rest of the group were getting restless with me and didn't want to help me look couldn't find anything that resembled the hint.
will put on my save list for another day.

I found the information and estimated the location to start my mission but I decided I wanted to have a look around before I found this cache.
After grabbing one of the other multis I headed toward this one. The three locations were easy enough to spot (and lots of fun!) but once at the FDP I badly misused the information a few times before finally working it out and easily finding the cache - seriously you'd be impressed at how far I went in every direction to try and find the eventual GZ!

Sorry I did't find this multi! Please delete my log! Sorry for any inconvenience!
Having 'Smith' family get together at beach. Mum and I felt like a walk so we headed this way. Having previously recreated Pvt Jims mission but not locating the memorial cache, and with further Intel from CO, we headed for the GZ.
Possible enemy scouts in close proximity, but able to complete mission without compromising location.

I promised my son no geocaching today as I'd spent all day with some of the locals on rangitoto on Saturday but when we came up here for our first time sight-seeing, even he agreed that choosing 1 of the multis would be a good way to explore the area.
He & his mate loved the idea of Pvt Jim's Mission so, pictures memorised, off they ran, while the olds wondered around, enjoying the peace & quiet & amazing views. Didnt take long before the adults were being told to hurry up with 2 WPs found, and soon after onto the 3rd. From there, a few calculations, and we were confident of GZ. Found a really likely location that matched everything in the description & the hint but no container behind the stone door. Or anywhere nearby. A find would've been nice but we didn't mind, coz the fun was all about the mission. Thanks for a great multi, Glyn

Found with alpenmilch80 on a Sunday afternoon caching at North Head using some new GPSr tricks I didn't know existed.
At GZ my sight was true and the tell-tale G2 marker was a dead giveaway!
Well, that was rather funny. I'd searched this area before on a previous visit looking for one of the other multis. Little did I know that another cache was right nearby where we searched!
Thanks!

slieschke and I decided to enjoy some quality geocaching today in the North Heads Historic Reserve. We collected two of the given WPs and used a new learned GPS functionality to narrow down the next search area. With two options we draw the lucky first one to be the GZ of the final. This one was the easier one of the three multi’s in the park....TFTC
My aim was good and true today.
Wondered what the hint was but soon became clear.
Great hide. TFTC.

A long overdue day out with Vamber knocking off some Multis and other caches in the Devonport area.
A fair bit of walking was involved in securing the information for this one and when we finally got to GZ, we searched for ages before resorting to a text to the CO with our theory as to where we thought it was. We were so close - just hampered by our limited knowledge of military terms!

Out for a day of tackling multi-caches in Devonport with KiwifruitsNZ. A lot of walking around North Head securing waypoints and finding the military points. We finally got to the GZ and spent a good time fossicking around to no luck. After a desperate text to the CO we soon realized we weren't far off at all and managed to secure the find. A nicely and challenging thought out multi. Thanks for keeping this one alive G-2.
A lovely day for a walk around North Head. Ellex2 and I found all 3 points in the photos but didn't have the right tools to figure out the FDP, though we think we know where it is. We're determined to head back another time and knock this one off!
W found the 3 points in the photos and we thought we found the right gun and marker but got a bit lost after that. Fantastic trail to follow; really well thought out. Might come back another day for another look
Back again for another go after a nudge from Glyn--I had forgotten that G2 is a soldier that marches to beat of his own drum! With that misconception cleared up it was a quick find after adjusting the "gun-sight" once more. Cheers for another enjoyable multi. Looks like I have collected the GOS set now--thanks for the exercise!
After my recent visits I was pretty sure I new where each of the WPs was. I was not wrong and had soon located the FDP. After making an obvious mistake with the "gunsight" I corrected my mistake and headed off to find the final. No luck after some time searching. Soon ran out of time and had to head home. Maybe next time...
Thanks for setting up this puzzle. We had a fantastic time running around all over North Head this afternoon. Our young nephews really enjoyed it too and was fabulous in getting them outside and away from their video games. Will return soon to finish the other two puzzles which we also got half way through
We have been wanting to do the Game of Soldiers multis for a long time. After a recent afternoon spent exploring the tunnels on North Head with our grandchildren we resolved to return. Today we spent an enjoyable morning identifying the 9 images for the 3 multis, and working out the position of the waypoints of each one. With heavy rain threatening, we had just enough time to find the Forward Defense Positon. From there it took a few minutes before the aha! moment was reached, and the cache discovered. Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable multi in a very interesting location. We will be back to complete the remaining multis very soon.
This one deserves a Favourite.

Loved this multi! Havent been to North Head in I dont know how long.
Collected all the info, got a likely GZ and headed off there. Rather a muggly area so had to keep checking out the sumptuous views until the coast was clear. Only got random microseconds to hunt which was frustrating - loitering was starting to feel very dodgy. But then, a reasonable search gap opened up and soon enough we came up with the goods . TFTMC, the views and the exercise. Gets a favourite.

A neat area well worth exploring, Buster the Geckoh dog loved running around while we hunted out the waypoints, once 2 of them were found we tried using just the 2 but got to an area that looked promising but came up empty..... hunted around a bit more and found the 3rd WP and with 3 points to triangulate from we got a more accurate spot, pretty close to the first attempts but Mrs Geckoh had her eyes un-painted and found the booty......

We identified the three military locations and what we think is the correct FDP, but didn't get further than that. We'll be back with some more time and hopefully without the rain.
After a DNF 2 days ago I was back today with some more intel on the situation. Located the memorial cache within minutes. It helps to keep themind and eyes open to all variations.
Cheers for the cache.
Cheers for the cache.
This has been a sad day for me with 3 DNFs and only 7 finds. Time to go back home and sulk.
Followed in Pvt Jim's footsteps and located FDP but failed in mission to locate memorial cache.
Checked today, the tree in which the final was hidden has split in two, spilling the cache in the bruiny!
Have found a new hide, will replace soon.

2nd time we spent all day here and still didn't find any of the 3 multi caches. Enjoyed finding the military places in the pics - will have to come back another day.
Excellent multi and adding it to my fav's. Once I figured how to use the gunsights and not to use them backwards!!!! the cache was quickly mine.I will recommend this to my mate hanjac next time he is in town. TFTC
Nice to have a quick find on this one on our second visit to North Head. We are still grappeling with the other 2 games of soldiers. TFTC Signed logbook and parked a green jeep inside.
The plan was good, solid even. I'd have a quick walk around, find the WP pictures and then make a quick find. Hmmm.....NOT! It required a few visits, actually more than a few visits.... These visits didnt really count did they? I mean they were really just recce missions and I didnt actually look for the finals. Thanks.
Nice to have pics of relatively close locations and with a story to connect them. Loved the puzzle to get to offset. We were sure we were right and searched for an embarrassing amount of time before rereading hint and looking on a slightly different bearing. NINO TFTC
A bit of an interesting story...
After finally finding all three places and then finding the FDP, we were unable to find the cache as it was getting late and we had to leave. The gates shut at 8 pm for vehicle traffic.
When we got into our car at 7:55pm the car would not start--flat battery. A few moments later a security guard came up to the carpark and told us they were going to lock the gates and that we had to leave. We asked if he had any jumper cables, but no he did not. He said he would try to come back at 10pm to see what he could do, but he still needed to lock the gate.
After the guard left, we deliberated a bit and decided we were hungry, thirsty and not willing to wait until 10pm to "see what he could do". So, we went down on foot and made our way to the main street in Devonport--thank goodness for GPS otherwise we would have been lost. We found a quiet restaurant and had dinner, then called a taxi from there back to Bayview...$40 for the taxi!
Then the thought occurred to me for a helpful cache--why not have one with jumper cables within? Hmmm...

Perfect mission for our very own Private Ryan who always seems to save the day. No worries with the FDP and cache was soon in hand. Thanks for a great multi in one of our favourite places.
4941 A fun multi... quickly found the three waypoints as we were quite familiar with the area, from hunting for the original Game of Soldiers... But what a mission, it took us a while to figure out what to do once we got to the FDP, nice hide, many thanks.

Enjoyed the mission up to the point where we couldn't find the cache. After missing the hide where we thought it should be, we started over complicating things and coming up with other possible locations one of which was impossible to reach given the tide conditions. Eventually a PTO gave us a sanity check and the cache was soon in hand.

This one was published while we were out at a friend's party, so took a lok at at when we got home at about 2:30am. Given some knowledge built up from exploring this place as a kid, and from more recent times, like searching for (and failing to find, due ot missing waypoints) the other game of soldiers cache, I knew precisely where each of the 3 photo waypoints were. A little thinking gave me a likely spot for the FDP. An undisclosed amount of time lapsed before it was time to go take a look. Wow, that place sure is locked up at night these days - I'd never seen the big fences aroudn there before. I guess they are sick of people going up there and drinking, making a mess, and partaking in various other nefarious night time activities. Anyway, got to a spot that looked good and GPS told me I was just 8m from my guessed spot (and a shine of the torch in that direction confirmed it - nothing else there, this is it). Well, then it was a matter of locating the "gunsight". Had walked around a bit and pondered giving up for now, and waiting for more light to perform the final steps, but then had a minor "aha" moment and thought, no, I can do it now. No problems with the hide - nicely chosen spot, and loved the steps involved in getting there. One of the most enjoyable multis we've done. Would probably suggest the ratings be upped - perhaps to around 3/3. Good fun and FTF #485 in the wee small but very peaceful hours of the morning. In/out a bunch of trackables. TFTC!!!
