I was down in the lower wairarapa and visited quite a few caches while we were down there but i am only slowly getting around to logging them This was one The gates were quite interesting and they would be interesting to see how they open etc When we visited the lake wairarapa was very full after torrential rains the previous weekend .

i took some photos which i will include in the log thank you . I took nothing and left nothing . for this cache

01-Jan-21
With the prospect of a nice long weekend available, I decided to spend a day or two over in the Wairarapa chasing archived Skindo puzzle caches and any other caches I would be passing right by including this one.

This was a nice and straightforward park 'n' grab. The cache was found exactly as per the Hint, and encountering no issues with the cache or the contents, I was able to swiftly sign the log before replacing everything exactly as found and heading back to the car.

Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache, and Happy New Year to you.

16-May-20
Quickly found before we set off for the confluence. Wonder why the building is blocked off? TFTC.

26-Feb-20
For some time now Mrs G had a set of solved puzzles ready to go find, mostly around Lake Wairarapa, and of course there would be a few others to collect en route to that area. Finally we got to go, taking a couple of days with an overnight stay in Greytown, so as to make the trip a bit leisurely and have time to enjoy the views as we travelled.
Today was Day 1 and we decided to drive straight to Featherston before beginning any caching so as to keep our focus on the lake area first.

A very hot day and very blue water here. After a bit of weeding the cache was located. TFTC

06-Nov-19
On, under or in between? But quickly found. TFTC

Quite a surprising structure to see in this location! Took a few minutes to locate the cache due to multiple possible hiding spots. Eventually retrieved, in good condition. TFTC Skindo!

Down to Palliser to enjoy the spring sun while it lasts and pick up some caches. Sun turned a rich golden colour and was painting the landscape orange, a perfect backdrop for a final few caches on this productive day. TFTC

The cryptic nature of the hint threw me at first, but a quick look around the area soon revealed the hidey-hole. The walk down to the river confluence was put off for another day because of the weather.

With lucypear on the journey from Cape Palliser back to Wellington (via the around the lake route!)

I certainly made the find harder than needed! No need to overcomplicate this one. There was a bit of a CITO required here.. brought some trash back to the car including a uniden GPS which was not working

30-Sep-18
Last find for the day on our drive home to Welly. Kyb3r found this one, along with a broken GPS someone else must have dropped.

12-Jul-18
Gee there was a chilly breeze here as we hopped out of the cosy car and having been sheltered from it as we came down the side of the lake. TFTC # 12.710

Hmmm barrage gates, the word barrage always reminds me of barrage balloons as used in WWII but of course it soon became evident what the word referred to here. TFTC Smile.

#1460. Every once in a while there is a day of madness. Today was that day. To complete an Auckland based challenge cache (GC3QY6Q), I needed to visit 50 caches in a single calendar day. But I couldn't use any power trails. Each cache had to be at least 1 km apart. So I spent several nights planning out a route around the Wairarapa that would allow me to achieve this target plus enough spares to cover for the DNF's. I managed to get around all 50 caches (only needing to use a torch for the last one) and was home by 10pm. Apologies for this generic log. This was cache No.15 of the day. An interesting piece of engineering here. The cache was quickly found thanks to good coordinates. All dry inside. TFTC

26-Apr-15
Easy find with ETHNZ on an enjoyable day outing geocaching the lower Wairarapa

26-Apr-15
An easy find with LNM1961 and her husband. Helps to have a working GPS -not like my last visit. A good family friend was part of team who worked on the diversion scheme, and the gates, with my late father.

#20 Crawled through the hole in the wall and wondered if a really evil person would plant a cache in there. Fortunately skindo is not like that - the cache is in the obvious place.

07-Jan-15
I left with the geokids early this morning for my first foray into skindoland, on an attempt to qualify for the 100,10,7 challenge in one day. Unfortunately I did not achieve this (but qualified with my previous few days' finds). All in all, I achieved my best day's hunting, collecting 61 traditionals, 20 mystery caches including 4 challenge caches, and one virtual. Many thanks to all the cache owners and players who make this game/hobby what it is (and apologies for the copy and paste).

09-Nov-14
Driver for a bunch of kids rowing on the Ruamahanga. Chance to do a spot of geocaching around the lake. number one for the day.

01-Nov-14
Over in the Wairarapa with a group of Venturers for the weekend. Left them to their own devices and the two older Orsome4somes went on a little GC-ing roadtrip. Don't often get the opportunity. Quick find! TFTC.

01-Nov-14
Over in the 'Rapa for a Scouting weekend with Venturers. Had the chance to skive off and do a bit of exploring, and caching. A nice quick find at GZ - and noted the earlier visit of some caching friends on the same trip, but having their own exploration today.
Really interesting structure, and I must go find out some more info on how it is designed to work. Reminds me of the Thames Barrier in London, which was a real fascination for me when I lived there. Was interesting to view when they had "testing" days.

TFTC!

22-Mar-14
A plan was hatched for another extreme, fly down, drive back caching weekend. funkymunkyzone, alpenmilch80 and myself flew down to Wellington on the first flight Saturday morning. We met up with vista at Petone in the Toyota Yaris rental car, as he'd flown down the previous day. We headed straight out of town and made a beeline for the start of our route at Featherston. We zig zagged our way through Wairarapa, Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki on our way back home to Auckland. To save time and log space, we stamped the logs as "Team AMFV".

Our 1500km / 40 hour drive consisted mainly of narrow gravel roads, some of which had spectacular scenery and views. Sorry for the copy/paste logs as its now all abit of a blur having only a few short naps in between. Many thanks to all the cache owners who have placed caches for us to find on another epic little adventure. TFTC! Big GrinBig Grin

mike-miss, funkymunkyzone, vistra and I met early Saturday morning for a two-day-geocaching-trip and once we collected the smallest relocation car available (a green camouflaged Yaris) we were on our way. funkymunkyzone already descripted the route we took in detail and I am still very impressed how he managed mostly the driving without getting lost a single time. Clearly he has his own Topo map in his head Wink. This was a great team effort and I enjoyed the groups spirits and its laughs along the way till the sleep finally got me after the last cache in Taranaki.

In total I collected with the "Team AMFV" 278 smiles along the way and the word "brace" is no longer foreign to me. I would like to give a big thanks to Skindo and all the other cache owners for all the placements along our tour and hope I don’t annoy too much with the copy and paste logs. TFTC

22-Mar-14
Another fly-down-drive-back-caching weekend, this time in the company of mike-miss, alpenmilch80 and vistra. Three of us flew down very early on Saturday morning and met up with the other who had flown down the previous day. We headed straight out of Wellington, stopping just once to rendezvous with the other member of the team. We cached our way through the Wairarapa, Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki under the moniker "Team AMFV" (google it if you're interested, but it seemed appropriate for our mission).

We headed over the Rimutakas and started off with a loop of Lake Ferry before heading north and out into the back blocks.By the evening we were up around Masterton and heading back out into the sticks, criss-crossing Route 52 picking up cache finds along crazy little roads, the craziest of which were around Pongaroa, from where we headed back down and across to SH2 just north of Eketahuna, coming over the insane hills at Pori just after dawn. Spectacular.

We all piled into our little Toyota Yaris rental car, which had probably never seen such terrain before in its life, judging by the amount of clanginjg of metal on stones, and scraping of underbody on metal road centre. All part of the fun though, and nothing like taking 40.5 hours (with basically no sleep), over 1500km, to get from Wellington to Auckland, stopping at 288 caches along the way - 173 on Saturday and 115 on Sunday. I enjoy driving long distances, so I drove for about the first 25 hours plus a few more hours later on Sunday - also because I had designed the route so I knew fairly well the way we were going, and this time we made no mistakes!

Sorry for the largely copy/paste logs, but it's hard work remembering all the different caches. Some stood out from the others but we enjoyed every single one of them and were thankful for every single placement along the way. This trip, and the company, was fantastic and a fun but shatteringly tiring weekend.

TFTC!!! Big Grin

22-Mar-14
This cache was found as part of a marathon weekend of geocaching with alpenmilch80, mike-miss and funkymunkyzone - aka "Team AMFV" It was a full on weekend of non-stop caching, mostly on windy gravel Wairarapa roads!

I had flown down to Wellington on Friday, then met up with the others first thing Saturday morning. We loaded up a Toyota Yaris rental car, then slowly made our way back up to Auckland, arriving late on Sunday night! The poor little car certainly got put through a lot!

It was an incredibly long and tiring weekend, but great fun at the same time, with a great group of cachers! All up I found 250 new caches over the weekend and revisited a few that I had found before. Sorry for the copy and paste logs, but the weekend is already a blur! TFTC!!
