Heading up to Lightning Ridge for the day with the middle geokid. Awesome weather for exploring. Left Carinda around 10 am and didn't get back until 7 pm. Great day spent in a really unique area, explored mines, camps, artesian springs, and did a heap of caches along the way. Heading over to Grawin Opal fields for a look and a few more caches before heading back to Carinda. Quick find hereTFTC!
We missed this one on the way in as everyone was keen for some lunch, but we made the stop on the way back out of the opal fields. After a bit of a wander into the bush we found the container in good order. It's been a dry dusty and fun day exploring this unique area. Thanks for the cache!
GCLOGAN TripFound with GrimRaider on our drive to check out these opal fields. I searched around and found the cache about 10m south of my gz. I am travelling with GrimRaider to GCLogan and then to western NSW on our first trip with the van. Thanks for hiding this cache wbfoto
After wandering aimlessly for a few minutes, I gave up and spotted the cache on my way back to the car. Weve loved exploring this quirky place. Off to the Grawin Show today. tftc
Slowly meandering home after attending the Longreach QOGM. Grabbing anything along the way. Most hides where found after a short search. Loved the different containers and hides. Thanks for placing the cache and doing the maintenance needed, so we can find this cache.

Ocw the Bebes. A quick park and grab as we pass through with the caravan. A little way out on Coords for us. A newish track driven in and we thought it damaged but found safe and sound a little away from this area. Tftc
OCW PelDroedGwin, towing the caravan with geodog Peppa and geocat Levin in the car.
The DNF’s and recent tree lopping here had me a little worried here but after expanding the search area we soon spotted the tell tale camo.
A fascinating area to explore.

The GPS had me further in dodging large pools of water but we found it closer to the road. Thanks for the cache
Ye gods… what was that. Something grey and furry just dropped out of the tree and bounced off.
After a tour back in town, we decided to head out here to try our luck with fossicking. Appreciated the very informative cache page, along with the fossicking sites at each pub. This was a quick grab on our way past, as one can't take up too much valuable fossicking time caching . Tftc
On our way home from the Grawin with Geowife and Geodog. All good here. Have taken PT left by Indigoblue.TFTC
Staying a few days in Lightning Ridge, boy its busy apparently cos its Opal Fest [?]
Today we headed out to follow the red car door tour, orange car door tour and finally found our way backwards onto the yellow car door tour! Thats a lot of car doors. Along the way we found your cache.

Headed from our base in Walgett this way today. After stopping at Marg’s carvings and learning so much about opal we then set out to find the local caches. This was our first stop and we found it after expanding our search about 10 metres. TFTC
Sure that I had the right tree but no cache evident. Abandoned search amongst the prickles and the boggy ground.
We have coomenced our journey towards Townsville Mega Event.
We have come to visit Lightning Ridge for a couple of days, spent 1 night at Cumborah visiting the opal fields in that area then another 2 at the Ridge.
This is such a wonderful area to explore & experience the opal mining area.
The hint was spot on but our co-ord was about 10m out.
Thankyou wbfoto for placing this cache.

An early morning visit as we head north. Didn’t see any drilling machines.
Interesting little place.
Cache is in good condition.
Thank you.

Thank you.
There is some drilling going on in this area for a few days please avoid this cache if you see a drill rig within 100mts of GZ
Late start this morning then headed out to the Grawin opal fields. This is something different again Lunch at the Sheepyard Pub and stopped to take pics along the drive. The roads are rough but doable in the dry. Even spotted a couple of emus on the way back to Lightning Ridge
Stopped here for the cache but looked over at the huge white rubble pile. Opal mining has scarred the landscape. A quick find at GZ and logbook replaced.

Nice one out of the way. Log is saturated. Unable to sign. Can provide photos if required. TFTC
We have travelled through Lightning Ridge on numerous occasions but I doubt that we have stayed for even a night here let alone two like we are doing this trip. We spent a long morning travelling to these outer opal fields and what an education that has been. The folk here certainly have a good sense of humour and that can be seen in all the signs they have hung around the place.
We toured through Grawin, Sheepyard, Glengarry then picked up the Lonely Child on our way back into town as I missed it on the drive out.
Thanks to all COs for their caches which ensured we had a good tour of the area.
Wow that must be a huge mine across the road from this cache which was found to be in good condition, though only slightly damp considering all the rain they have experienced. TFTC wbfoto SL

Easy find, but the log book was soaked with water.
We tried to dry it a little bit and put the log book in a plastic bag.

We're in Lightening Ridge and found this one while visiting the Grawin Opal Fields today. Logbook is quite damp but I could still write on it with my power tank pen. Thanks for the hide wbfoto.
Found with Mrs Oz KEG after arriving in Lightning Ridge dodging all the closed roads due to flooding. TFTC.
Ground was a pretty wet and soft underfoot today after the overnight rains but cache was still accessible.
Co-ords were about 10m off. But this could have been due to poor phone reception.

Hit a surprising muddy spot! Go figure in one of the driest spots around. Geokids found quickly. Avoided the spurs as much as possible. TFTC!
So glad to be out and caching after our period of enforced noncaching. Enjoying our road tour around this area and finding caches is an added bonus. Short little search and cache soon in hand. Tftc
Wow, this cache was almost surrounded by water. I wasn't sure I'd make it, as its very boggy. The only thing that saved this is that its on a little mound a bit higher than the surrounding moat. All good at present.
After a not so long search was not able to find the cache, maybe there but time ran out.
Finished the pub crawl and came for a fossick. Quickly went to grab the cache. After the rains the ground is very wet and muddy. Found after a little search. Log and cache is wet. I was able to SL but didn’t have time to stay and dry out the log. Will need CO assistance. TFTC.
[:(!] Thanks for an awesome effort.

Bit of a drive to check out the pubs in the scrub, a few bonus caches as well. It’s a big mullock heap.
Out to the Opal fields from Ligtning Ridge this afternoon especially to find caches in the area. Mrs A grabbed this one as I was approaching. We signed the log and re hid the cache. TFTC wbfoto.
Hi there wbfoto. Today was a tourist day with a difference - driving out to Cumborah and then the Grawin Opal Fields (and find a few caches of course). This cache was a quick find and the container and the log are dry and in good condition. SL. A FavPt here - just for the enjoyment of the countryside, the drive and the cache. Thanks to wbfoto for this cache - our find #6671.
We'd pulled up here to make it rich, but alas, no early retirement for us today. We'd left and did the run around to the pubs and picked this one up on the way out of Grawin.
Thanks for the cache and cheers from Browngang

Heading out for the pub in the bush run and a visit to the Garwin waste pile to try our luck. Picked this one up with the Browngang as the last of the day. Not too much luck with the pile of waste opposite....
Pubs? Hotels? Golf courses? Out here? Really? I feel like I have been transported to a parallel universe. Everything looks so different out here, and the roads - well I could get lost in a square house block so I had no chance out here! Thank goodness for downloaded maps. TFTC
First spotted by little miss.
Together with little miss en little fitzy out to the grawin, sheepyard and glengarry opal fields.
Thank you for placing and maintaining this cache!

A lot of wandering in circles, tried to pap but no signal. Just when I was ready to give up bang found. Is in good cobdition. Still not seeing the opal attraction though.. at least the mining opal attraction. The process is interesting. All the smaller trees arecoated in fine white dust that at sunset gives the impresdion of light snow.Tftc
its been a cache a day while camping out here at Sheepyards, I'd been here before and wasn't really keen to head up onto the pile as it was pretty hot, which is a slack attitude for someone interested in opal but that's life sometimes. One of our party headed up while I looked for the cache, the other 2 stayed in the car. my gps wouldn't settle so I had to open my eyes instead and soon had cache in hand. as I reached the car a local miner started to chat to us, started showing us his opal (as they always do. he just happened to have some in the car) and unsurprisingly it was great fun and a good way to end our time on this side of the opal fields. one of my friends bought an opal off him and we all enjoyed talking to him. everyone we met has been very friendly and we did hear of another tourist picking up a very pretty opal off the roads around Sheepyards - I think it ended up being around a $4000 stone once polished - we saw them at the Ridge the next day, pity I wasn't quite that lucky this trip but maybe next time....

We'd seen hardly any traffic till we got to the dirt and then it turned into Pitt Street. Man, was there some white dust flying around. NSW long weekend was a busy time at the Ridge and plenty of others must have thought the same as us - "let's go to Grawin". Enjoyed our visit to see where the best opal mining is, as we were told. TFTC wbfoto.
Watching mountains being made. Easy find on this interesting drive around Grawin. TFTC
