WA Big Trip Winter 2024. Day 8 - Whyalla Day. I spent the day in the Whyalla area caching to the north and the west. There are plenty of caches around town and I did some including a Lab set along the fore shore. I enjoyed a great walk along the circular jetty. Most of my caching was along the Iron Knob Highway doing more of the trail caches along that part of the road. I did heaps back in 2017 and managed another chunk today. Hot out in the sun, but cool in the shade. I am now getting behind in my logging, so hopefully it will not get much worse. I managed to find a few caches that were DNFd back in 2017, so I am happy about that. The next cluster of caches were in off track country behind the industrial estate. I came up to this one on the wrong side of the pipe, so a bit of a clamber to get to it. This was another experience of walking around and around until it appeared. The cloak must have run out of energy for today. Thanks for the cache Bunya46523.7 TNLNVisited: World Traveling Gold GC A#6 & 2012 Cache Guardians A#230**Albida**
I don't think gorjak has put it back as CO intended! There is now no need for the tools on the fence to retrieve it!It is now a 1* difficulty! ??TNLNSL Thanks
Had a walk past the solar farm, found 3 tools on the fence and low and behold we didnt need them . Signed log and put tools back Thanks Bunya tftc
Was looking for an eclipse tin when male cacher spotted it lying on the ground , have replaced it to where we thought it should be TFTC
Out n about with iluvtrekking on a damp and chilly morning. Although rain overnight the track was not slushy.Quick find.
Another cache found during our 2022 South Australia Adventure using Geocaching as our guide.
We had a great time today driving some of the numerous 4WD tracks around Whyalla. Most.
Thanks for the cache Bunya

Another day of our celebrations of birthday week for the cats, Purrfect Di and Mattycat kept on birthday caching to see what we could unwrap in the way of iron triangle log books. Yours was one we found along the way, with the help of Jack. Good fun time for all and an insight into the impact of mint tins on the aussie steel industry [:o)] Most finds were straightforwad, some were a little obscure, and some were just rusting away!!! A good way to keep fit on a warm day.
No luck finding the tool, but a bit of a search around nearby located the little cache soon enough.
Looks like the area is now a source of local solar energy
Sincere thanks to Bunya for placing and maintaining this cache on our geo game map
[:o)]
We must note that we certainly do appreciate the way those mint tins age to blend in with the rusty outback earth!!! Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, plastic cracks and mint tins rust!
---
Searching around every day finding and signing using some or all of the resources of GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), Whereyougo, Garmin Montana 750i, Montana 680t, Etrex 35, Samsung S20+, Samsung S9, with Geocaching App, c:Geo, or Geooh Go, and Android Auto and other maps... or often with just plain old dumb luck Quite a lot of that actually!!!
*Logs are composed and published using GSAK of course.*
---
Please do stay as safe as possible when caching.
Keep a lookout for bogs, snakes, surprise cliffs, boxing roos, wombats, bulldust, and floods,
try not to get tetanus from rusty mint tins and don't fall out of trees...
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- but especially lookout for bugs from alpha to omega !!! . [xx(]
Try to keep Travel Bugs as the only bugs you share and pass on
Now our borders are open - even more important to sanitise and safely distance!!!
Much appreciation of all those placing quality caches out and about around the countryside,
in sensible safe places especially! - it keeps our game safe, fun, and interesting
[^] [:o)] [^]
A great caching start to Twenty Twenty Too

The Non Wangaratta Event Tour 2021!
Covid has postponed the Mega in Victoria until January but leave had been granted for AnyMules to attend with me and Bushfire. So Anymules and I went on a tour to Eyre Peninsular and mid north South Australia instead whilst Bushfire joined us in spirit only as covid meant he couldn't come here either. Not needing anything for my yearly goals I hoped I didn't add too many to the DNFs [B)]
DAY 4: Grab a few move solved puzzles and head to Terowie.
We found the cache by hook! Then we continued our journey and I though - where's my phone. Some crook has it. Back we came and it turns out it fell out my pocket getting back to the car. Just by hook - no crook involved.
Only one of the three goals from last year achieved. So once again trying and fill my calendar with multi-caches and complete loop 11 again this year. [^] For my third goal I will try and get my DNF numbers from over fifty to single digits. That should keep me busy again this year! [:o)]
***Thanks Bunya for putting out this cache and maintaining it for our enjoyment. ***

Full time nomads since 2013. Still tootling around the country trying to avoid Covid hotspots.
Back in SA for harvest work. Heading to Port Pirie but 4 days ahead of schedule so a quick detour to Whyalla was in order. Headed out early today with lunch hoping to convert some to Not altogether successful, but still managed 39finds from 41 hunts.

Found the cache before the extra something but improvised with our tool. Beware of the treasure keeper with 8 legs!!
Quite a search this one had us stumped but eventually located it with a little bit of persistence lol TFTC will require a new log though
Well this was fun! First found the extra something (that was the easy part). Took some looking up high and low to find the cache. Then to get to it. Took some fiddling and patience. Paid off. Great hide TFTC
This cache is likely still there but I couldnt find it among the leaf litter. The cache has been replaced and refined slightly to help you spot it. Thanks to SnappyTomCats for bringing the loss to my attention.
Away for a week on some R 'n' R from the shop and to recover from an exhausting 10th Birthday celebration for Geostuff. We headed out early to beat the heat and targeted High FP caches and any others in between. This was a second attempt at this one, after the CO confirmed its location and what might have happened to it. We returned and thoroughly examined the area it should have been and reported back to the CO. He gave as permission to log this unloved cache as a find and the cache has now been replaced. TFTC

Sadly a DNF for us today .Cache not found since 2016 .wondering if still there
After a hint from Tempo (who is now maintaining this cache) we finally found it. Nice tricky hide. TFTC
GoodLook very, very badly wanted to attend a special event, so who was I to tell her she was going overboard with geocaching [?]
Instead we jumped into Harry on Friday for 2 days of adventure, accompanied by Laighside Legends, in Whyalla where fishingmad was holding an event on Saturday to christen his new boat..... 6km out in the gulf[^]
We had a blast and it was huge fun showing GoodLook around parts of Whyalla that she hadn't seen before I think her logs say it all!
Today was a day of 3 DNFs and 30 finds
Unless mentioned otherwise, please know that your cache and log book was in good condition.
This cache was fun in more than one way! Getting to GZ proved interesting no matter which angle we tried
Then when we girls finally got to GZ where LL had been looking for some time, it was still a short while before the cache was found
Thankfully my hand held sun assisted and I saw something somewhere that the others had missed. Used the tool and retrieved it and had a good laugh
That's one micro in the bush in Whyalla that I really enjoyed![^]
Then it was back over the pipe to Harry and off again

Found It!
Locus cache and GoodLook had a bit of trouble getting over the pipe. I thought it was quite easy...
Eventually we found it after a bit of hunting. Bloody PM only caches! Spawn of Satan!
TFTC anyway

Getting over the huge pipe was a bit tricky. Locus did a commando crawl, whereas I searched for a lower concrete brace with a higher mound of dirt in order to straddle the pipe and slide over.
There were several hooks around, a clever cache hide, well done!!
The loud and lovely Locus Cache [:X], the very clever Laighside Legends and myself drove to Whyalla in Harry with the aim of this weekend being: to find a few caches, and attend the 5T boating/fishing & caching event.....AWESOME!! [^]
There was fun, laughter , silliness [:o)], tense moments, some creative driving (on road, off-road, dirt, sand, mud, water, tackling what could be described as a very steep and narrow bmx track...yep you heard me!) , breath holding , kindness [:X], tight time schedules, ladder climbing, feet getting wet, dolphins, a boat, fish, nanos, ammos, sistema of all sizes and a number of mint tins. Surprisingly few DNFs. And LOTS of other mad crazy conversations and adventures. Gotta love caching and all of the fun it can be!! [:o)] [^]

Checked this one today, the cache is still in good condition and placed where it should be but the hook seems to be missing. Ill replace that soon
Well thought out hide. We really like these and this will be a favourite. The hook was easily found, and Mrs Stavros picked the hide pretty quickly. Tftc.
Found tool, reckon I know what supposed to be done but hunted round GZ for sometime but couldn't find it by hook or by crook.
Found with Steve010 on a day trip to Whyalla, second visit for both of us. Well hidden. TFTC
Found by Mary & David, in company with pprass (signed as m & p), at 1623. Took a while. We knew what we had to do, but couldn't find the right place at first - it is well-disguised. Certainly different. Our second day on the FTF PT, and we had better results than yesterday. Our thanks to Bunya.
Found at 4:21 PM GAFF2 in the company of maccamob. We signed the log book as "M & P".
We had so many ideas of what this was going to be and why we needed the tool, but we just could not find the spot to look in. Eventually we went around the other side and something looked like it could be a possibility and guess what! It was [^]
So elated to have found this one without having to pour over it again and again.
Thanks Bunya.

Found with Team Waldron and The White Dog Gang as part of a three day jaunt over to the west coast. This cache added to around 200 caches found in a range of bush and city settings in Whyalla, Port Augusta, Iron Baron and lots of other places. TFTC.
Doing a Whyalla & surrounding area run with Team Waldron & Trail 06.
This was one of the many we found.
Cool spot, thanks for bringing us here

On a 3 day caching expedition to Whyall and beyond with Trail06 and The White Dog Gang.
All log books signed TW, T6 and TWDG.
We started in Adelaide went to Whyalla, Pt Lowy and Port Bonython, Iron Knob and Iron Baron, Kimba.
Apologies for the generic logs.
Second or tird visit here and finally I make a find. Neat work.

No notes read just follow the pointer to GZ another micro no hint, a short scan around and that looks suspicious aha a micro cache can be seen then a bit of innovation soon had the cache in hand TFTC
I took a wrong turn somewhere and on the push bike, couldn't actually ride up to GZ.
Closest I could manage was about 50 metres away [:o]
Time to go for a walk
But first there was the scramble over the pesky obstacle that lay in me way !!
At GZ I scanned the scenery...
... sure 'nuff on the fence were several TOTT's
I grabbed the petit one of the trio.
That gave me a good idea of where the cache might be hiding
Do you think I could find the hiding place though ?
Of course not
Time for ..... a fizzy thinking cola
And as I stood, sipping on the aluminium clad nectar, I could see a detail from afar that needed closer inspection
Tada .... a cache ... which with the help of the TOTT was soon in me paws
Well that was fun !!

TFTC OUT WITH JEFFEDDY, jeffrey11, wow, SARS 12. Great day for caching. Thanks again. So nice to be out in the sunshine on this beautiful long week end. Ha ha initially tricked by decoy!! Great cache!!
Drove to Whyalla, to pick up some caches that we missed on our last visit.
Caught up with friends, went out for dinner before driving back to Port Augusta.
A great hide, took us a while. A favourite point from us.
Many thanks for the hunt today, Bunya.

I was with Dad when he found this cache (I even managed to lose the special tool), well today I went straight to it and found it with no problems. TFTC.
Wow!! Been here on the other side of that fence in that very corner 4 times this week for work. After work today I down loaded this cache to my GPS and went looking. Parked the car and went for a walk to GZ. WOW!!! made some money this trip $50.00 hiding in a bush. Looked around, Hmmm need a torch I think. Walk back to the car [ eyes down for another $50 yea right ] to get torch. Get back to GZ and lookey, lookey ,lookey there you are What no swaps Well I,ll give you a new key ring, the old one's a bit rusty. Hung the old one as a decoy. TFT cache and cash [:d][:d]
Checked cache and found it was OK except that the camo hadn’t been replaced which dropped the difficulty by a star! Please replace cache as found otherwise it’s a bit too easy.
The something and a spare were still on the fence by the corner post.

Found the something as the kids were trying to retrieve the cache. Signed log and replaced both as we found them. TFTC.
Brilliant hiding. Couldn't find the hook so we made a new one with our geo tool kit. Disturbed a few ants. Tftc
On a 2 day cache run from Adelaide to Whyalla and back.
We didn't find your cache in the time allowed but we are logging all our dnf's because of the cache vandal in Whyalla.
We may have just missed it but it may be gone.

Took a bit longer to find, only in that as we are out-of-towners, and went the off-road version, tftc
Found it in the first place I looked, but then had to head back to the cachemobile to get a pen to sign it! Cheers Gav [11838]
Saw the thing on the fence. That was the easy bit.
5 minutes later used the wire from the fence.
As you do.
Thanks to Bunya and clear skies from TeamAstro.

Finally had some time to clean up the last few non-smileys on my map! 2nd of 5 today. Thanks again Bunya for a clever hide. Could only find the emergency back-up "thing" not the original. TNLNSL
Got to GZ no problems, found the 'something on the fence' no problems. Looked in what I thought was every posible place the 'something' would help with, with no luck, just rocks shoved where they don't belong. After much frustration I succumbed to the phone a friend option which put me on it quite easily. These ttricky ones can be interesting with small kids as they lose interest quickly and just increase the frustration level.
Also geokid 4 unfortunately lost 1 of the 'somethings' so there is only 1 ATM. SORRY.

Great hide, one that was worthy of being the last to find for me in the series. All is well including both tools. Hmm, just realized in my excitement I didn't sign the log .... Best I go do that now. TFTC Bunta and the great series. Fav point from me for this one.
Found with J.O. Excellent hide. Was pretty funny that he forgot to sign the log in the excitement .... and then forgot to replace the tool after going back. Third time all good. TFTC Bunya.
We still have to come back for the WIE puzzle, so it would be great to know if the cache is still available.
I checked after the 13 Jan DNF and it was there.
Given its location, I suspect it is still OK.

Missed the 'something' on first look therefore was looking in totally wrong area! The 'something' really helps define where to look. A great hide. Both 'somethings' are still there for future use. TFTC
We walked along and yep u guessed it we were on the wrong side lol. Managed to get to the right spot and got it first spot i looked. I agree with YR80 this spot was made for that cache! Well done. TFTC
Reading the page carefully I thought I just about had it worked out. As it turned out I was pretty much right, the 'thing' was what I expected and the cache was in the third spot I looked. One of the fastest micros I've ever found and very nicely hidden. I can see why this spot just had to have a cache.
Went along for the ride with YR80 why had the advantage of having read the page before me. What a great hide, it looked like it had been there forever. Thanks for another great cache Bunya
Woo Hoo! fTF by an out of towner!
