Travelling down to Wellington via Cape Palliser for the second week of school holidays. Stayed at the Pinnacles campground last night. Quick detour here and was soon signing the log. By my calculation this should be our Skindo 400th find as we have collected 8 Skindo over the last 2 days and had already found 392. As usual cache was fine despite being here for years. Thanks Skindo for all the smileys, the gravel road and back country scenery.

Wandering in Wairarapa between Easter and Anzac day. Started at Cape Palliser and ended up in Martinborough. Found several hides along my way. This hide was one of them.

GPS bang on. Didn't see the beach from GZ. But thanks anyway.

staying down in this area for a few days and visiting the local sights as i have not been here before , and this day we were on our way back to our motel and went down this side road Luckily we had the jeep so it could ford the very large puddles .. the flooding from the last week end of torrential rain as the road was under water but we soon had the cache in hand, signed and replaced which was dry even after the all the rain!
thank you for this cache . Smile

Just love these little beach communities. Cache is all good. TFTC

Easy find for the little one! TFTC

15-Jan-22
Found by the 4th hint object checked. Rather than moan about the knackered log we replaced the cache with a waterproof log in a pill container inside a larger pill container. There are so many good Skindo caches and it would be a shame for it to be archived due to the CO no longer being active.

Second try and got it. The log very damp and needs replaced. Tftc.

After staying overnight in the DOC campsite overnight, we explored the Cape Palliser area today and picked up a few caches before heading back to Featherston. We’d started the return leg at this point. This one was a quick find. #4011. TFTC.

Some deep puddles on that road. Decided to avoid them.

25-Oct-20
The road is a little bumpy here, almost beyond the limits of out little car. and where it wasn't bumpy it was flooded. So Karen did a little three point turn (actually a 5 point turn, why I have no idea) while I jumped out for the cache.

The plan was to go tramping but the weather report was particularly disappointing. So my sister, my nephew and my self went camping at the Pinnacles instead. Fantastic weekend, great weather, although quite blowy on Sunday. And on our return to Wellington the weather was... particularly disappointing. It was hosing down! I am glad we went for option 2, but I am still in need of tree time.

Another road trip to the Wairarapa, this time to pick up caches for the Mystery at the Museum. I headed out to Cape Palliser as I haven't been out this way for a few years - before I started geocaching so there's plenty for me to get.

Parked at the end of the road and wandered over to where the GPS was pointing. Cache was quickly found. All good here. TFTC

21-Apr-19
Down to Palliser to enjoy the spring sun while it lasts and pick up some caches. Superb panorama of the coast from GZ, from the cliffs thrust up by fault movement out in the distance to the endless horizon extending out beyond the clouds. Passed a wedding on the way to GZ off the main road. TFTC

Banian's Good Friday trip to Cape Palliser to get the most southern North Island cache, and a few others.
I had to stop short of the beach due to a mud hole that Mrs banian woud not let me drive through. Good to see the fenced off areas are now safe from 4x4s.

MEGA TRIP 2018.

As usual with the annual MEGA event, we partook in our annual MEGA Trip. However this year was a little different from others, with much more sleep and a little less time caching than usual, but just as much fun being had along the way.
The general goal for the trip was to focus on all the new Virtual caches published over the last year, visiting Cape Palliser (for the Southern most cache in the NI), and Castle Point, along with spending time at the MEGA Event. With this in mind hiring a campervan from Hamilton and seemed like the best way to tackle this goal, plus sleeping in a car with four people, would just be too cramped!
The trip was a great success, and our goals were achieved. A big thanks to all CO's for there hides.

LEG 3: Mega, Cape Palliser and Castle Point: Todays plan was to spend some time this morning at the Mega Event before heading off to Cape Palliser and then working our way North to Castle Point. Two places that have been on the to visit list for a while now.

On the way back from visiting Cape Palliser Lighthouse, so decided to find the caches along the road. A quick find here.

21-Oct-18
Well it's the WENZ Mega Weekend and a plan was hatched to motorhome (as we thought it would make a difference from sleeping in a car which is our normal accommodation method) down here in the company of HKCB, 11HPG11 & Alpenmilch80 and head for a few caches along the way.
As time was of the essence and we had planned to spend bugger all time at the actual mega but rather head for specific caches that we would otherwise not collect.
The record keeping for this trip was a total of 1750kms, (fuel = $450) and less than 100 caches, plenty of Beer & Wine and I still call it a complete success as we got what we came for.
Following about an hour at the WENZ Mega we headed for Cape Palliser (as this was a targeted area) before heading north again. What an amazing drive down here and a variety of sceanery along the coast. This was truly a highlight for us and many photos were taken.
We cached our way back up towards the Waiarapa and onwards to Castlepoint
thanks for the placement

20-Oct-18
During lunch time on Friday I flew into Wellington from Auckland to meet up with some crazy Hamilton’s (11HPG11, Cats&Dragons & HKCB) to spend some time at the 2018 WENZ Mega and then driving the huge campervan back to the Tron.
After the night spend with a hearty meal and good drinks we refreshed ourselves before moving in the direction of the mega. Afterwards we left the Hut to drive out to Cape Palliser. This find was collected on our way back. TFTC

20-Oct-18
It's Mega time! This year we decided to hire a motorhome and travel down in relative luxury, very different to the last few years. Our team this year consisted of Cats&Dragons, HKCB and later on Alpenmilch80, and myself, logs were signed as MEGAHOAC. We went on a bit of a whirlwind trip round the lower half of the north island, chasing virtuals, earthcaches and anything a little bit different.

A quick little side trip down here to this little beach, looks like a lovely spot.

18-Oct-18
Another nice view, I didn't dare take the campervan to the next cache though =)

#4736. A sunny Saturday and I need to get my cache numbers up for the month. So decided another adventure in the southern Wairarapa was on the cards. So drove over here in the morning and after doing a few at the northern end of the lake, it was time to head south. Yet another road end. It had turned very windy by late afternoon so decided to grab the cache and keep heading towards Cape Palliser. Nice quick find. Signed and replace the cache back where found. Thanks for the cache skindo.

I have a full day meeting in Wellington starting early on Monday morning, so I decided to take a leisurely route to it, via a two day tour of the Wairarapa. Booked me a cute little Airbnb cottage in Masterton and planned a route to an area that I have never been before. Left the Manawatu in the pre-dawn light to make the most of the day and it has been an awesome day, with springlike weather, and full of lighthouses, seals and of course, braces, powerpoles and caches.

This was a quick find of another replacement cache - this time with an actual log book inside. TFTC

Once more I was back on the Cape Palliser Rd signing off the few caches I had to leave due to time constraints a couple of days ago. When I got here I saw the pile of rocks where the cache should be but like Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard it was bare. so I replaced it with a 200 ml Sistema and new log book.

Cheers for the cache.

30-Aug-14
Found on a >41 hour non-stop geo roadtrip from Wellington to Auckland via Cape Palliser and a whole bunch of skinny winding Wairarapa roads, in the esteemed company of slieschke, mike-miss and cretti. We picked up our rental car, dubbed the Idiot Box, and assumed our new identity as Team CRT, shortly after 8am at Wellington Airport and headed north.

We first headed to Porirua Harbour to take on the resident Kiwi geo art trail before heading over to the southern Wairarapa and Cape Palliser where we visited the light house at about midnight and tried our best to avoid seals while searching for a few caches along the southern most shore line of the North Island.

We headed up past Greytown and Carterton, focussing on caching areas west of SH2 this trip. There were some highlight caches, particularly around Carterton (I think) and some way up in the hills looking over the whole area from Masterton to Martinborough.

It was daylight again by the time we hit Masterton and we decided to hit fast forward and skip a planned area (will just have to come back again!) and shot through to Palmerston North where we got back into the swing of things.

We took the back-road up to Mangaweka, discovering some really fanstastic little places along the way, like a picnic area and waterfall way down in a canyon, and then we continued via Taihape, across and up through Owhango, to get some really old caches, and then north through Te Awamutu and back to Auckland to drop off the Idiot Box at the airport.

And of course, despite it then being after 1am on Monday morning, and raining kinda heavily, slieschke and I couldn't resist driving over to the North Shore for an FTF on a cache published earlier in the evening.

Thanks to all the cache owners along the way, even if we couldn't find your cache - all part of the adventure! Sorry for the copy/paste log, but just too many caches to remember *all* of them individually. Great spot and a nice easy one we could drive right into with no one about. TFTC!!! Big Grin

Found in the company of Cretti, funkymunkyzone and mike-miss on a crazy Wellington to Auckland road trip in the idiot box. We traveled via the Kiwi GeoTrail in Porirua, the Wairarapa including Cape Palliser, the Manawatu, and back to Auckland via the western side of the Central Plateau. Signed as Team CRT. Despite very little sleep the weekend was a blast!

Picked up our Lego friend here who was eventually dubbed Vladimir and travelled upside down with us bluetacked to our vehicle cabin ceiling.

Thanks!

Team CRT - traveling in The IdiotBox - For the first time, I have joined in with the mad crew of: FunkyMonkeyZone, Slieschke and Mike-Miss in a mad 40 hr caching drive from Wellington back to Auckland.

Swapped out a Lego man who is now our mascot.

We're into hour 9. Smile

Find #773. Thanks for the cache. 30/08/2014 20:10

A plan was hatched for yet another extreme, fly down, drive back caching weekend from Wellington to Auckland. This time, Cretti and slieschke joined in on what turned out to be another epic road trip with myself and funkymunkyzone (our third trip this year).
We all met up at Wellington Saturday morning as i ended up being on an earlier flight to the rest of the crew. Jumped in our rental which happened to be a Ssangyong SUV this time round Big Grin and headed straight to Porirua Harbour to hit the Kiwi GeoTrail. From there on, we zig zagged our way through Wiararapa to Cape Palliser, back up through Martinborough, Masterton, Ekatahuna, Pahiatua, Palmerston North, Taihape, Te Awamutu and back home to Auckland in the early hours of Monday morning.

To save time and log space, we signed the logs as "Team CRT" travelling in the idiot box for the weekend. Lots of laughs were had over our 1500km+ / 41 hour road trip which consisted mainly of narrow gravel roads, some of which had spectacular scenery and views. Sorry for the copy/paste logs as its now all abit of a blur having only a few short naps in between. Many thanks to all the cache owners who have placed caches for us to find on another epic little adventure. TFTC! Big GrinBig Grin

Find #8 of 8 for the day. Stayed at Lake Ferry hotel for the night and had a bit of time before dinner to head off to check out this location 'around the corner' (about 3km away but a 10km drive each way). Certainly a bleak and windswept beach; worth a look but probably not a keeper.
Lots of effort has gone into the dune plantings and while many of the plants look surprising good considering the hostile environment for them, some have unfortunately given up the fight.
Just one hardy fishing couple on the entire beach today so no problem accessing the highly visible cache hide (which won't stand a chance in the event of a tsunami). Big Grin
