This is a spot we weren't aware was here but this geocache brought us to it and we are so pleased it did. It is understandably a popular area, especially on a beautiful day like today, and the carpark was full with many people parking on the road but we were lucky to arrive just as someone had left and got a parking spot in the carpark. After looking at the grave we began looking for the cache and at first had no luck but then had a read of the cache description and some recent logs and realised we needed to search a different spot. It then wasn't long before we found the very well camouflaged cache. Thanks TRambler for hiding this cache and bringing us to this beautiful and historic location.
After reading the description and using the compass on my phone, it was a quick find. Cache was pretty waterlogged so took everything out in the sun to dry off. Cleaned out the container also. Everything is nice and dry now and ready for the next cacher. Thanks for the cache
DNF :/ grrr. Scrambled around uphill for nothing, now reading logs . it would be great if someone could update with the correct coordinates for GZ!
Good camoflague.... Read the description rather than the GPS. Got there in the end! Very well done
Never been on this beautiful beach before. Cache was awesome too. A fav from me
Note to self… read the logs before going on an uphill mission. Paced it out to perfection. All good. Love the history of the area. TFTC
Haha, I didn't read the previous log and consequently found myself at the top of the hill hunting around. Came back to the grave site and the cache was quickly in hand. Loved the history of this area. Cache all good. TFTC
Right at the start of our holiday and we popped down here to pick these two caches up. Came down one other time but didn’t have reception so I was unable to pick this up. I didn’t look at the logs and went way up the hill before checking and realising that climbing wasn’t required! I enjoyed it anyway and then came back to find the cache. Beautiful area here, TFTC
The rain was still holding off for now so I wandered along to check out the sailor's grave. Interesting that the 'S' on the grave is backwards. The cache was quickly found in the first place I looked
Cache replaced with small change in direction from earlier description. Now 8m 330 degrees (gps) from HMS Tortoise plaque.
Quick find for 2FLYTim today. All dry & in gd condition. Finally able to get a smiley for this one. TFTC
10.45am. We are camping in Whitianga and came over to Tairua for the day. We have driven past this road many times but this is the first time we have come down. A great little beach. Soon found the cache once we got to the sailors grave. Good to see it being cared for. A favourite point for theexperience.
Thank you. David and Noeline.
Thank you. David and Noeline.
Spent the night in Tairua and walked Paku early this morning. Now its back up the road to Kauri Spur to get this one tagged. Cheers.
Day 10 - Sunday 27 December - Tairua - up to Whenuakite and back and Pauanui power trail today. What will we find today?.
The Seagnoid, Zara, Toby and I are off on another geocaching escape over Xmas, this time to the mighty Coromandel, then over to Opotiki and stop off at Rotorua to return home on 5 January. Had an fabulous time exploring many wonders of our country. Rounding up over 400 caches along the way, with a few LABS, 20 odd TMGTs, virtuals and lots of interesting earth caches to keep the mind busy. Watching the sun come up on New Years Day at Mt Maunganui was spectacular. Lots of walking and even more driving. But had an awesome time. Thanks to all COs who made this adventure so special.

Hunted for a while but could not see anything. Then we read the description incase there is a hint in there and we found...
Ignore the coordinates. They are a bit lousy. Use the description to find the cache.
Nice little bit of history here. Thanks to everyone who maintained the grave.
Taybeedragon and I went on a tour of the Coromandel - one of the few places of New Zealand, especially of Te ika a Maui, that I have yet to explore throughly, and from there along the coast to Opotiki to see one of my many, many sisters. From 18 December to 5 January we found over 400 caches, including 12 adventure labs (60 caches), 20 or so TMGTs and a host of virtuals and earthcaches. And I hosted an event to see the sun come up on New Year's day - surprisingly popular given that it was at 5am. We climbed a lot of hills, saw some amazing beaches that were quite popular despite (or because of) the insane access to them, walk a lot of bush, entered and explored 8 gold mines and generally had an awesome time. However I am glad to be back, but now is the hard part, and I fear it will take just as long - logging!

Heading back home after a weekend getaway in Whitianga. We last visited this spot in 2017 and came away empty handed. Today no issues, walked right up to it and had the cache in hand in no time. Not sure how we missed it 3 years ago - suspect the hide was completely covered in natural camo making it difficult to spot. Have recovered a little so it does not stand out if a muggle passes by.
Spent some time wandering along the beach, skipping stones, paddling in the water and making rock stacks at the south end. Great location, cool camo - gets a fav point from us - TFTC

Thanks for the cache! Love the camo. Mummy daddy and Olly found this one on our way to Opito Bay for a beach holiday. Dropped a trackable in there too.
Log book is a bit damp.

Scrambled around on the slope without success. Now reading that the coordinates are out, so realise we should have widened our search further.
Had no internet so had no hint but GPS worked a treat. Busy on the beach today. Log is very rotten. Tftc
Found while on my Christmas holidays in Pauanui with Tramyard. Beautiful place. Thanks for the cache
The GPS was sending me all over the place but managed to find it by following the text in the description. TFTC
Having been told about this lovely beach by a local, we decided to pay it a visit. The beach was beautiful and only had a few people on it.
I took a stroll over the stream and went for the cache, which was a quick find after reading the story about HMS Tortoise.
Signed log and replaced as found.

This had me going round and round, up and down. Read activity and see coordinates out but find something of interest. Now knowing what I'm looking for and ditch the phone it just became a process of elimation. Turned around and spot it. Great spot. My daughter would have like this. She's loves a bit of history. Tftc
Awesome camo!
Hard to find using the map as pin was a bit off cache. Good that it had a pencil as left ours at the car.
Good container to stow more treasures. Eddie and Paris with CJ, Susan, Albert and Michelle.

GPS are way off. After scrambling up and down the bushes through the trees we realised we shouldn’t have gone so far. Great camo!
What a fantastic destination. I have known about the road down here but never ventured down as we always travel in our motor home and was fearful of the unknown. Finally Google mapped this and found it was all sealed with a decent parking area. Easy drive down and a spectacular leap across the stream (even more spectacular on the way back - and wet feet). GPS swung all around. I spied a likely hide but stupidly carried on up following GPS. After all avenues were covered I returned and located very nicely camoed cache- boy could I have kicked myself! And yes I have to agree with a previous cachers observation regarding logs vs signing. Thanks for bringing us here.
This is a great area ...much better since I last visited 40 odd years back ...I was glad of the large parking area enable parking with ease of the motor home ...a quick hop across the stream to GZ and for some reason the GPS was not happy ...used hint and geo sense and soon had the well placed cache in hand and log signed thanks TRambler,TheDoddSquad for the great placement ...loved the spot and it very typical of many areas up this way ...we’ll do e a place worthy of a cache
Had some free time and what better way to spend it that with Mrs Dragon having a look at an area that we hardley ever get to investigate. After a pleasent trip over here and a chance to have some breakfast (on the journey over here) we started by collecting some caches at Cooks Beach and finished later in the day at Hot Water Beach as the two local Earthcaches were our objctive for the day before heading home.
Thought to grab this on the way home, managed to use cacher logic and came up with the cache in the second place I looked. Will just say it was interesting to see whom had last signed the logbook
Thanks for the cache, Thanks for the placement

Followed the GPS up the steep bank but no luck. Tried following the information given in the cache description but again no good. Still a lovely spot to visit. None of us have ever been here before.
Oh dear, another DNF. Sad. Despite scrambling up and down the bank, and spotting (I think) the cache name icon, I came up empty-handed. Thanks for bringing us to this lovely spot though, Dave.
A few people around at the beach but thankfully, no one up at GZ. We headed up and found the cache quickly in the first place checked. Very glad of a good outcome, having visited this location back in 2014 and back then, had to settle for a DNF. Awesome location, TFTC!
After we stranded last day in Coromandel because of flooding our journey today bring us to Paihia, Bay of Islands. On the way we have enough time to find somes caches.
Thanks for showing this place and hidding the box.
Greetings from Germany!!!

Took hubby on a walk to the sailors grave and then found a cache. Lovely place here. Should have taken togs for a swim. Will have to come back. Thanks very much TRambler
Great spot for a sailors final resting spot and also for a cache. Great camo.TFTC
Ist of 3 finds for the day

Sailors Grave has always been a popular place to bring the family, thankfully we did that a couple of days ago and now I'm back with the sole purpose of geocaching Cache found quickly and in good condition thanks to accurate coords and a straight forward hint. Great camo job, in fact I would have missed it but the last finder who re-hid it left some sticks and placed them parallel... you know what that means Cheers TRambler TFTC.
I was up hill and up hill and all over the hill and nothing . . . . the GPS said I was in the right spot but I just couldn't see anything. Phoned a friend (Fencarrows) for a hint and got one but after looking and looking I still coudn't see it. There have been recent tree trimmings here but I still think the cache should be there. Might go back tomorrow early in the morning for another look see before heading back to Papakura.
GPS was all over the place with all the trees but straight forward once we reread the info and hint. Super spot tftc.
Lovely beach and nice walking traks. I enjoyed my time here! Thanks, Bibibibibupo.
What a gorgeous place!! Came for the cache and stayed for the river and the beach. Wish we'd packed our togs and a picnic... Could have stayed all day. It took quite a while to find and was about 9m from where the gps said. Great camo. Thanks for placing a cache in this lovely bay.
Took a little detour to get this one. Had a great time exploring about with the kids. Nice camo!
Thanks to a previous log - I managed to get the info for a coromandel multi while we were here.
Glad we parked on the right side of the stream! Tftc

I didn't have this one on my phone app and we had driven down from the previous cache to see if we could find the sailor's grave. Mr CD had it on his garmin so we were very pleased to hunt for this one. I was reading the info at the grave while Mr CD was climbing round the hillside as he was sure he knew where it was. After reading the info I moved a few steps further and called here it is. Signed log and returned. Very well disguised. A favourite point for bringing us to such a lovely place and the rain held off while we walked to it. TFTC
Our destination today was Tairua and Pauanui, which we didn't have time to check out on our drive from Hamilton on Tuesday. The day started a bit drizzly in Whitianga but starting clearing as we drove south.
After finding the cache at the corner of Sailors Grave Rd and SH25, we carried on down the road to the lovely beach here.
It was an interesting location, though sad to see how young the sailor was and I wondered how long it took word to reach his family that he had died.
It took us a wee while to find the cache and I was halfway up the steep hillside when I heard StreetWalker call out that he had found the cache, by reading the cache description. Now I had to get down the hill without slipping! Best to ignore the hint (which is misleading) entirely as the cache is an easy find in the right place and looking from the right direction. Thanks for bringing me here and TFTC.

An enjoyable day driving around some of the upper Coromandel with Waiiti20. Some great caches and enjoyable views. TFTC
Took this side road as we were after some information on a multi we were working on. It was also good to be able to find this one after a failed attempt on a previous holiday up this way. TFTC TRambler, #8438
Having tried, failed and injured oneself in the poring rain the day before having approached this from completely the wrong direction, coordinates had me closer to the road than this cache. Hence the slip and slide and cut hand. Today while the kids were playing on the beach I decided to explore the signage and found what was in the description so headed back to the car for the GPS. A quick find when in the right spot. Kids loved it here. TFTC.
A very enjoyable day (day two) geocaching through the Coromandel. Weather was stunning and the views were amazing
Nice cache - TFTC

DRAT!!! Wish I had paid more attention to the Description. GPS had me up the steep bank!!! LOL
Lovely area here and will be back ...
Lovely area here and will be back ...
Walked straight to it today and found it where I looked earlier in the year but that time it wasn't there. Oh well I had to come back anyway as part of the Coromandel Graveyards multi. What a fantastic place to be buried. TFTC
Easy find, though had to dodge beach muggles!! Dropped off a traveling item (pocket knife) tag # FRPX6D.. Took a babushka doll
After initially going to the coordinates, without success, we followed the instructions in the cache desscription to a quick easy find. Our coordinates were S36 57.701 E175 50.546. TFTC
Found this cache at the beginning of our little hike along the seaside and then back up to the road. TFTC
What a lovely place to visit! Didn't even know of this reserve down here if it wasn't for coming to look for this cache. Found a pile of sticks which could have been where the cache was located 8m mag north of the plaque. Not sure if this cache is here due to the note in the description or it is in fact gone? Then again, i could be blind? [xx(]
What a search! We were having no luck till we read the comments from others and got some good clues. Then it was ready. Was impressed to read about the 21 hour / 90 cache mission - good work guys!
Another weekend... Another mission... Gap (of Fap and Gap) and I are working on several challenges right now. Who needs sleep anyway... (It's overrated). By the end of today, we will record our longest caching day to date (21 hours); complete a circuit of Coromandel Peninsula; find lots of caches; cover a huge number of kilometers; and race against the heavy rain forecasted for the region...
The gps coordinates were not kind, and we found ourselves searching fruitlessly in the treeline above. This took up a fair amount of our time. The penny dropped after Gap read through the description and realised that this was an offset cache. Still, the immediate location made this an interesting and beautiful place to visit. TFTC.

On another road trip with Squirrel Nutcase to collect the 309 trail so thought we should pick up a few more caches as we passed. Started our adventure at 6am Saturday and back home at 3am Sunday with 91 caches in hand. Best ever day caching or should I say day and a bit.
1.50pm - Co ords had us several metres out, used description for this one. SLTFTC

I'm support crew today for my husband who is racing in the Coromandel Classic. This means I get to hand him his running shoes then drive for an hour, wait a while, and give him his bike. Repeat many times over two days. You can't blame me for collecting some caches in the meantime? Unfortunately my husband has the compass in his race pack, but I managed to track down GZ with a good guess!
Found after quite a search! Another in an interesting spot knocked off, TFTC!
I have no idea why I am making this so difficult. Will be back though. What a magic spot.
Another nice day in NZ - we saw a lot of nice places and of course we found this cache here. Log book is wet.

I've had a kayak trip from Tairua to Cooks Beach on the cards for a long time, and particularly keen on seeing Sailor's Grave - so very glad to knock that off today, with a cache to boot. Very popular here today, and the surf quite manageable. T4TC - M@
Enjoying an Xmas day outing and visited the beach and grave. On a 'non-geocaching' holiday but knew there would be one around here - somewhere. Wasn't too hard to find, TFTC.
Mr Spy3 passed away a couple of weeks ago and he was 15 caches short of 1000 finds. I am making sure those 15 are done and this is number 2. A beautiful spot and interesting too. TFTC
