An early start due to tidal times. It turned out we should have been earlier. I met up with gkmlb for the walk. I had a plan to keep my keens dry by wearing my gumboots and changing back into my dry keens for the climb. That plan failed when the water ran over the top of my gummies. An interesting climb. Very slippery. Thank goodness for plenty of trees as well as the rope to hang on to.The geotrail/trapping line was faint at best as we worked our way towards gz. Glad that its s a good sized container which made for an easy find. Now to retrace our steps. Clinging on foot dear life as I slipped down the gray back and then hitching the shorts up high as we waded back across the estuary.A most appreciated early morning cup of tea welcomed us on our return.Thankfully there wasnt much rain at this point in the day.A fun adventure with good company. We noticed this island on our way home from a drive out to the peninsula. I had a look at the geocaching map to see what the name of the island was and saw that there was a geocache out there. I informed the rest of the crew who suddenly got very interested. "You need to plan your trip and it must be done at low tide" I informed them. "Well, it looks pretty low now" came the reply. "We have to wade out, climbing is required and it's a 4.5 terrain rating" I then said reluctantly thinking that we weren't really equipped or prepared for this one. Junior cacher suddenly became very keen and informed me that we were definitely going for it. So, we found ourselves wading out to the island (in jandals!) on a totally spur of the moment T4.5 caching expedition. We had a few mishaps, junior cacher almost lost a jandal in the mud and then we got dive bombed by a concerned parent seagull when climbing up the cliff close to their baby in the nest that we hadn't noticed from the ground. Once at the top we made our way to GZ and here it got even trickier. I checked a lot of hint objects, resorting to crawling on hands and knees at times to get to them. There are a lot of hint items in this part of the island! The other crew members gave up after a while and were telling me to get a move on, the tide was rapidly coming up. I couldn't believe that we'd done all the hard work to get to GZ yet couldn't find a large 15 litre bucket! Luckily, just as I was about to concede defeat, I checked one more hint item and there it was! Phew! The log was quickly signed and replaced and then it was a hasty descent back past the dive-bombing seagull and across the incoming tide to the safety of the mainland. The water was almost waist high on the way back, so we got pretty wet. But what a memorable adventure! Favourite point added, TFTC!
Already had wet feet from doing the dot days challenge so as was now low tide set off. Thanks for waypoints so went easy way but still over my knees. Needed the rope, more coming down than up. Easy track following pink ribbons until spotted the prize. Deserves the faves. Great fun if a bit chilly.
Planned it for a spring tide . The water was barely over my calves. Good to see the replanting in the middle. There was a few hint items. All good. Thanks
There is a newish rope on the NE side of the island with a reasonably easy climb to the top. The coordinates at its top end are S45 50.277 E170 38.470. Coming back from the cache and looking for the right spot to descend on this rope, watch out for a mid-sized totara.
Another fun cache: we crossed the mudflats just before the low tide, water to mid-calf height. Found a way up the cliffs thanks to a relatively new rope and followed a track to the middle of the island, to see a broken bucket in the open along with some black tubs. Is it the cache? Yes, it’s a sad and broken container with sodden and mouldy contents. Fortunately there is a log slip in a smaller container in it, with 2 names on it to which I added mine. Cache was 40m from where it was supposed to be. I will write a note with the location of the new rope shortly.
TFTC and the adventure - it’s proving to be a fun day on this low spring tide.
Then, once back on shore and looking for another cache, I got a message from Daywalk to say I had probably found an archived cache. So quick trip back to the Island, quick splash through the now-deeper water, haul myself up the rope, trot around a rough bit of track to where the GPSr says the cache should be, crawl around a couple of hint objects, and voila, a bucket in much better condition than the last one. Tide was coming in so brisk walk back and down the rope and through the now even deeper water - Mission accomplished! And another gap in my D/T matrix filled. A good morning

Took the paddleboards out for a spin from Portobello and thought we'd try and find the cache on Pudding Island. Some good pest control work in progress, so finding the way to the cache was relatively painless. Thanks.
Spending a week in Dunedin. Mrs Rubbishparty had to return home for work leaving me the hard task of collecting smileys. Today we cycle the Peninsula going out on Highcliff road to the Albatross centre the back along Portabella road. Times are return for low time. Had targeted this cache as we needed it for our D/T grid. Waded out with water up to my thighs. Scrambled up the hill and no problems finding the cache. All up was a great adventure. Thanks for the smiley.
Had wanted to get this a long time ago and everytime I drove past I thought yip have to do it one day soon. So when Wilbywarrior said hay mate you Don have it and do ya want to tag along I was very keen. So when sorted a time that work with the tides and we set off. Once at the park by the island it was very windy and the water was very murky and it was a guess that we weren't going to end up in a hole we set off into the quite cold water. So just over the knees and we were on the other side. Found a place we could climb up and in no time we were on the top and out of the wind. It wasn't long before Wilbywarrior had the cache in hand and signed and off to find an old archived cache. Was much easier getting down and the tide was more out so didn't get as we going back to the main land. Yes another one ticked off. Thanks for the invite Wilby.
This has been on my to-do list for a long time. Every time I had driven past caching on the peninsula made me think I’ve got to get over there one day. Well, finally that day had come. I also roped in Gadget169 to come along as well. We met a bit before low tide and looked across to our destination. The water was murky but we headed on our mission hoping not to trip on any of the larger rocks. Once across the frigid knee deep water we looked at our options to get onto the island. After some consideration we decided on the best looking access and Gadget lead the way. Once on top it was easier going for a bit and the last 20m was a bit of a bush bash. The cache was located fairly easily due to the hint. Inside was all nice and dry so we completed the paperwork. The next challenge was to look for the old archived cache which hadn’t been spotted for nearly 11 years. That turned out to be a successful mission too! We decided on a different route to get off the island which seemed easy but was quite slippery. I did manage to pocket dial a Group FaceTime call to my whole family in Melbourne in the process! The walk back to the mainland was completed without issue as the tide had gone further out by then. Thanks for the cache and for the adventure Cumbyrocks!
With the optimal low tide and time, this was a targeted cache for today. We arrived just a bit early so the tide wasn't fully out, but it was far enough to wade across with water just over knee deep. A route up the island was sussed out and although a bit of a wrong turn was taken across the top, the GZ was finally reached and cache found. tftc
I am back in Dunedin again at the hospital again, but this time for my mother , and for the same dam reasons I was here a year ago with my partner. Bugger but partner is all sorted and well so fingers crossed that this time around all goes to plan.
So to take a break from nursing duties I tool my father for a drive and we ended up out here .
Luck was on my side as it just about low tide so great news.
So on with my old shoes and over the sea wall .
Got to the start but a short walk around i found a way to the top and lookie here looks like this is what I am looking for.
So after the paperwork was done I was on my way down and back to the car.
Back to nursing duties .
A great day to pick up this one.
And with stunning views of the harbor.
Life is short Live one foot step at a time , never say I'm gonna just do it .
Thanks for the hide

mr had the most awesomeist dnf log typed into the app, and the hit the wrong button and didn’t save.
This was a pretty awesome hunt late this afternoon. We have looked at the island many times and said we need to bring the kayak, but today the tide was out, so we decided to just have a go (just above the knees going across). Then following the way-marked route there was a big slip of earth - which just increased the challenge. Walking around the island to get to the cache, and then trying to find it. We think we did a good search of the right places, but came up empty handed. On the way back the water had risen, but not too far.
Maybe another day ....

.We launched 'William the wrascally wavewider" at the Whalers Arms jetty and stopped off at 'Unexpected Journey', Goat Island and Quarintine Island before stopping off at Pudding Island on our return journey. William was well named, as he often has a mind of his own. But today with such a great day and calm seas and not much tide movement we are scooting along the waves. Find a place to beach William while we scramble around the rocks. Thankfully its low tide and plenty of space to walk around. Love all these interesting volcanic rocks here. Return to a possible entry point to scramble up the cliff to the top. Found no tracks here so it was a bush bash to the cache. The vegetation got thicker as we got closer to GZ and started checking out various hint objects. Finally after scrambling through the undergrowth The Seagnoid snaggs this one. Hey William is waiting patiently way down there. Now to find our way back to him. Thankfully The Seagnoid had waypointed our access point so it was another scramble through the trees and the scary decent back to the rocks below. Love the rocks heres. Fav from me. We spent an enjoyable 3.5 hours out visiting all these islands with William today. Now its back to the mainland for some more exploring.
Easter Monday 22 April - Exploring Dunedins amazing Southern Peninsular today. Zara is resting up at Harwood while we have William along to entertain us today.
Its another awesome geoventure to Dunedin, with The Seagnoid, Zara, Toby, Jack, Jill and William all along for the trip. Had a wonderful 10 days exploring Dunedin. It was great catching up with local cachers at several events we attended. Lots of walking and driving, with the odd cycle and wave ride to jazz things up. Thanks to all the COs that made this trip a wonderful success. Even managed to bag some lab caches along with wherigos, earth caches and events, with the usual mix taking us to some amazing places..

I day out on the water with Taybeedragon and William the Westless, Weckless, Wanderwing Wave Wider. We left the mainland at the Whaler's Arms and found an Unexpected Discovery, then headed out to Goat Island, back to Quarantine Island to walk around it (twice!) then across here, to Pudding Island. We parked on the north coast and walked clockwise around the island, having to walk 3/4 around before we could find a way into the hinterland. It's low tide at the moment, we could have walk across, but since we just came from Quarantine, the kayak made more sense.
The coordinate the CO provides a are no longer a feasible way in, not without a very tall ladder, but the narrow dodgy ridge on the north east corner works. From there we fumbled through the undergrowth and the overgrowth, through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, and much of the time very close to GZ literally crawling on hands and knees to get through. Found the cache , signed th log. Thankfully, for getting back, I had waypointed the ridge we climbed up - finding it would have been quite a challenge otherwise.
This awesome island and its challenges easily deserves a favourite! Back to the Whaler's Arms, total time away from the mainland - 3.5 hours, an excellent addition for the Rambler's Challenge.
Taybeedragon and I have an eleven day Easter weekend in Dunedin. Although, let's face it, given that we are from Blenheim and Picton that means two of those days was spent in travelling. In that time we grabbed a smidge over three hundred caches. Not bad, considering the amount of time spent way out on the back roads, on bicycles or canoeing on the water. A few virtuals, larges, letterboxes, earths, wherigos, and even ten lab caches in the haul. An awesome weekend!

Did this one in the dark only using the flashlight of my iPhone. Not the best idea but it worked fine. Crossed in knee deep water going both ways. It was hard to find the rope in the dark, but managed. Wish there were more knots for climbing up. I tried following paths on the top and eventually got close. Took a ton of bushwhacking and crawling around to find the cache. How come I always go for there kind of caches when wearing shorts? Anyways, great challenge. TFTC
on an overnight trip to dunnas on a bit of a mission, this mornings was to head to the end of the peninsula and cache my way back this was turned the other way round as I headed along the road .
by the time I got to the end it was low time and thought id give this one a go.
KJR had pointed out( on previous drive by) where they had scrambled up and the landslide that had happened since .
well there was no way of getting up there any more so I wandered around the island and found one further round to the right . I had changed into my dive booties for the walk across to the island and these weren't the best for the climb up but it could have been worse .
well let the bush bashing begin and there was plenty of that to be had , my phone kept freezing so I had to check everyone of the hints before I spied it as I was crawling along on hands and knees
always good to get a relatively straight forward high D/T rating cache without a 5hr hike .
now the fun starts how to get down.....?
worth a fav for the challenge tftc

I had mentioned to i_gotit that I still hadn't got to this one (mainly as a result of laziness and/or bad timing in terms of the tides), so I jumped at the opportunity when she said that she wanted to go there and attempt to find the original (now archived) cache. Tide was out when we parked so we wandered/waded across. I was wearing crocks which fitted me less well than i thought, so i nearly lost them in the sticky yellow mud just before the climb. I am not sure how the slip has altered the climb, but it wasn't to difficult.
The top was very overgrown (in fact we met some DCC workers on weed patrol there -- a never ending task if my garden is anything to go by). Finally got to GZ and stared at the plethora of clue objects, but I reassured myself by remembering that I was looking for a 'large' container, and in the end it was not too difficult to spot. Signed the log, and then went hunting for the old cache.
Stamped around, pushing through flax, lawyer and bramble, not exactly sure what we were looking for, and not having access to the hint, so we gave up. We will have to pressgang a previous finder (we have our eyes on someone) to revisit and give us a hand.

Nice day to have a crack at getting to the island. Bit damp walking over, nice stroll around the rocks, bit of a climb and a bush bash to the cache. Fun times. TFTC
What a mission this was. Hevic and I set out with KJR and sirbennis to nab this elusive cache while the tide was as low as it could be. Wading out was surprisingly easy - taking the right route, the water didn't come up above our gumboots, though that didn't stop some water from splashing in. Once we made it to the island, we tried to find a way up - this probably took the biggest chunk out of our adventure. We figured that the best spot was at the waypoint, so we ventured up. Once up, the bushbash started. We did crime across a handful of bins marked "Bio Threat" - best to leave those alone! At last, I spotted the cache. We made a very quick sign and seal as we were running out of time - or is that "tide"? We managed to find the rope on the way back, noting that although it did end part way down it's still there, and it's still holding strong. It held mummy weight on the way back down, no worries. Cheers!
On a mission with CJ-Curry, Hevic and sirbennis and what a fun one it was! After watching the tides for the last month today was a good day with very low/high tides. Arrived to find a little more water than I'd hoped but made it across the channel in gumboots and the water just went over the top in one part. Scouted most of the island to find the place where we thought best to make our way up. (We couldn't find the rope but on our way back down we did come across where it was - still hiding and still strong enough to use). Was a slightly slow and slippery trip up but once at the top it was relatively dry under the cover of the trees and bushes - not forgetting a lot of prickles and branches (hope your eye is ok CJ). Made our way to the direction of GZ and after a wee detour to the left and then back to the right and we were there. Lots of scrambling low to the ground, over and under and then the much anticipated "found it!!!". Took a somewhat slightly different track back and then took a few extra minutes to find exactly where we had come up (found mentioned rope in the process) but after a wee slide and jump into the mud at the bottom we were back where we started. Less water to get back across so this time didn't have to empty the gumboots! Thank you for such a fun cache
We went out specially the night before for gumboots, but a poor choice of crossing location and slightly too short boots meant very wet feet for me!!
Totally worth it though, for the great views and great time with our little team. TFTC!

Have been eyeing this one for a while so the tides were right (and even after today's event) and an added bonus the weather was perfect. After setting off the tide seemed higher than we anticipated. Looking at a fishing boat and its crew waving frantically at us very close by we were eager to get to the shore before the wake was going to make us wetter than what were were already!!! Finally reaching the shore we circumnavigated the island and nearly reaching the spot we started off we thought it was going to be impossible to find the cache - then there in front of us was a safer spot than what the island had offered us all the way around. An interesting Island to see from the sea - but the cache area was something else! Glad to be back out so we could get out before the tide got much higher. Thanks Natalie247 for bravely coming along for the support. TFTC Crumbyrocks for taking us here.
This one was on my prob never going to do list as I thought wasn't going to swim/get a kayak to it. Then learnt could wade to it. Eve07 had talked about it a while ago and I agreed to go along.
On the way out the water was just above the knee, and it was low tide. When we got to the island we circled it clockwise looking for a way up because we knew recommended rope approach was gone.... typically if went the other way round would have found way up quicker. But there was some cool stone features around the island.
Wow great big container - makes it worth while. Poor Eve07's legs were red again.
On the way back tried to follow same route but the wind had picked up. The water was up to my waist.
Yay great feeling of accomplishment.

Would have loved to have got this one - last visit and again today the tide was against us.
I've been eying this one for along time and today the tide was right and the weather pleasant with a ridge of high pressure doing its thing. Barely ankle deep on the way across with the tide still receding. No luck with finding the rope and I did a walk around the Island hoping for an easy way up. No luck so back to the eastern side and a possible route spotted. A successful climb but with the worry that going up is always easier than going down. I headed off in the general direction and soon spotted lots of cabbage tree leaves on the ground and then a familiar looking trunk. this seemed far to easy and sure enough I still had plenty of ground to cover. Soon there were heaps of smaller cabbage trees growing among lots of flax. I won in the end but ended up with spilt blood. Now to get back. Found the way down and the crossing back was completely dry.
Well, you have to try, right?
DTØ and I wanted to find this together. With a 7 month old baby you have to be sure you can get there and get back safe. Responsible parents and all that stuff...
We decided that one of us should stay behind. I stayed back on land with the little one and DTØ went for the cache. He was away for 20 minutes. Came back with a smile on his face. YES! TFTC! Greetings from Denmark!

Well the tide was right so why not try a visit to pudding island . Loved the adventure . Thanks heaps for this cache
Found today with NZ bozzy and 5 year old Kacey - never seen anyone move so far when she spotted a crab in the walk over .
Knew I was close to the cach but had to bush bash through some flax and nearly tripped over the cach . Easy find or accident not sure which

For some reason this was nog logged in my GPS and therefore I forgot to log it online. But I will never forget this cache.
After done the 0-days challenge we thought to do this one too. We were in the neighbourhood
The only thing was that the tide change was allready started and the water definetily was deeper then the other one. Still we thought we just do it. So off we go with the 2 swimming doggies. When arriving on the other side we followed the instructions exactly... ahum
just for a moment I thought to climb a bit, as in first instant we couldn't find the rope. That was a big mistake, as I slipped on a simple branch and hurt my rib. (bruised it seems). As I didn't want to upset hubby I just went on, after we found the rope. On the top it took a long, long time to find the cache.
At one part we thought that we needed to go back as the water was rising, but on the other hand we were so far we wanted to find the cache.
I was so happy to find it. And shouted out loud hahahaha. We love swimming caches and this was for the way back almost the case.
Thank you heaps and a favourite from us.

Most adventurous geocache I've ever done! Heaps of fun kayaking with Grantyp73 and Mum!
It was 4.00pm. The tide was lowest at 2.30 and coming in . . . do we have time to wade to Pudding Island, find the cache and get back? We'll give it a go. Crossing meant water to our knees and it was cold. On the island we looked for the rope at the waypoint. Nothing that we could see. Around the western side was a more accessible spot and MrG alone scrambled up. Pudding Island is no walk in the park but with great co-ordinates and navigating around the bushes he found the cache....and lucky for him, a pen inside. Getting back down was quick, pretty much a slide all the way. By this time the tide had come in quite a lot. No time to waste, we got moving...for MrsG down to undies, trackies don't roll up that far. What an adventure this cache was. Thanks for the fun Cumbyrocks. Fav from us.
From Highcliff we drove down towards Bay Company , because the road to Porto Bella was closed .
On the road along the sea to Portobello , we have seen that the tide is right .
First, we have circumnavigated the island , because we had not studied the waypoints . After circling we found the rope tiptop . After a short acrobatic deposit and short jungle walk , we found the huge box quickly .
On the way back we realized with horror that the water rises again !! We just came through even without getting wet pants .
Thank you so much for the brilliant adventure .
Thanks from Switzerland

Without a plan we walked through the water to the island. Without a plan we walked around the island. After reading the listening we knew more. We did a short climb, a short walk on the top and soon we found a big box in the forest. After reaching the beach dokfrank wanted to eat there something. But the water was rising and we went back to the other side-a good idea. For this adventure I'll give you a favorite point. Thanks
On our way down the peninsula to grab some other caches when we noticed that the tide was out so far that we would be able to get across to the island with dry feet - lets go! Like others we couldn't find the rope so headed up what looked the easiest way (a point nearer the northern end of the island). Once up it was easy enough getting to GZ as we followed a number of trails. Got to within 15m then into the flax and eventually the cabbage tree where we were rewarded with a large bucket. Getting back was a different story as we followed a different trail, but this took us to the rope - I think it would have been easier getting down the way we went up but down we went by the rope without too much of a mishap and back across to the car. Dry feet all the way! Found with Aoraki Sheep.
Despite not being prepared for this one, we ventured forth not wanting to miss the opportunity to grab this one with dry feet. Managed to scramble up onto the island reasonably easily and were surprised to find so many trails through the undergrowth but they were headed in the direction we wanted so we were happy. Thanks for such a large cache, loved it! Getting back down wasn't the easiest but we managed to scramble down the rope. Found with debsnz
Enjoying a 3-week summer road trip around the South Island with our kids: weather has been kind thus far & spectacular views everywhere we look. Just wonderful. First trip to the South Island since I started caching &, much as though I'd love to stop at every cache along our route, the agreed plan is a few quality finds each day or risk mutiny from the rest of the family who don't share my sistema-obsession. This one was on my must-do list during our few days in the Otago area: hidden close to our friends' house on the peninsula, in a great location, & a great D/T rating too. Only problem - low tide hasn't been that low during our few days' stay so far.
Today was my last chance. My muggle friend was very intrigued by my intense interest in Pudding Island, a spot he drives past daily but has never bothered to visit. So, with kayaks plus assorted gear an viable option, the pair of us headed off early afternoon at high tide for a caching adventure. An easy launch from the nearby wharf with a little bit of a head wind but nothing too challenging & a very pleasant paddle over to the island. My muggle companion was confident he knew where to find best access & the knotted rope, having watched from afar on the bank while his teens kayaked over here in years' past. And he was right.
With the aid of the rope, the scramble up was easier than expected although the need to then go bush-bashing took a bit of explaining to my novice mate! Didn't take long to make our way to the cache - great sized cache & a great stash of goodies. Back to our starting point, slid back down & paddled around the island to explore a bit further; really enjoyed the paddle & were almost tempted to head over to quarantine island but decided to leave that 'til next time. Thanks heaps for the fun & for the challenge of getting to this one, Cumbyrocks.

We got the last of the low tides for a while, and waded out part of the way before finding dry land. No sign of the rope, so clambered up a different cliff. After a brief wander and close encounters with a lot of flax, found the cache. Took TB, getting down was much harder than going up. Great cache, thanks Cumbyrocks.
HELL of a cache. Fell off one cliff, climbed up another without the rope(couldn't find) but pure stubborness kept me going. TFTC.
A great adventure thanks, racing time and tide! I didn't use the rope on the slip - it looked easier to climb up a spur further anti-clockwise from it. Quite a flax-bash to find the right spot:-)
PC had agreed to drive me out for a visit to Portobello School. I wasn't exactly in high heels, but my shoes were about as far away from tramping boots as you could get without stilettos. When I suggested the cache on the way back I anticipated PC Sniff telling me to be a bit more sensible, but his cache-lust kicked in immediately. I just wish I'd got a picture of him slipping out of his jandals as he climbed the slip-face. We both got multiple scratches as we struggled with poor GPS accuracy on my phone, and were just about to give up when he yelled "I've got it". The sweetest words in a cacher's vocabulary! Thanks for placing this cache and giving us a very memorable Monday morning.
Finally got this one. While down the peninsula on other matters, jrb5050 remarked on a very low tide, as we drove past. So on the way back, out of the car walked around the island and eventually found the rope. Steep climb up in wet jandals and only armed with jrb5050.s cellphone eventually zeroed in. Great cache and another for Jolly Green Giant mystery cache TFTC
Found it with MacAndrew Bay Keas and Cubs group on a recent island outing. With about 30 in the party it was hard to be discreet, but luckily the only other people on the island were geocaching too. TFTC
The Island was crawling with people today, with a local Scout group also out Geocaching/ exploring. It was great having some more eyes to find this one in the thick bush.

Great adventure on a misty, drizzly Friday afternoon in the harbour. We kayaked over to the island from Portobello and found the slip and the way up easily enough (thanks erninz for letting us know about the slip). Once up we enjoyed the walk across the top of the island, not so much the scramble and crawling through the undergrowth and flax bushes. We were a bit confused by the many cabbage trees and it took a while to find the right one. Great joy however once we found the cache. TFTC!
I was down on another mission this week and had some time on my hands so what better way to utilise it!
This cache had been on my list for some time and I checked the tides in the paper and made a quick text to my muggle son, picked him up and we were off!
Round the harbour and found the tide right out so only a very small depth of water to negotiate.
Got through this but couldn't find the rope as there has been a large slip but managed to navigate up by clinging and then after a bit of searching found a good sized container.
This cache didn't disappoint, magnificent views and quite a challenge.
Thanks

Found during round trip in New Zealand! This was a fun one because I like both water, climbing and crawling Greetings from Sweden! TFTC!
It took 2 goes tho'! Mind you, we only had an iPhone compass and lat/long readout (not .5 accuracy). Don't be afraid to do a little crawling with this one and depending on the time of year, you can expect to be easily up to yr knee at low tide so be prepared. I don't think the rope climb is suitable for the little ones.
Early afternoon visit.
The bottom of my knee length shorts got a bit damp, but all else was dry when I got to the pud.
Found the rope easily and then began the climb, no worries there. Pressed on through the scrub and followed the wee trail most of the way to GZ, where a bit of a bash was required to get to the cache.
A quick sign then back along the trail to the waiting rope. A quick semi abseil down and then another wade back to the car.
Cheers for the quick adventure.

While Mrs Zorgon was making a purchase at the nearby Portabello Hens craft shop I noticed this cache on the GPS map and after a quick skim read of the cache page realised that the tide was pretty much right out. Decided on the spur of the moment to give it a go.
Less than knee deep on the way to the island and the water was not as cold as I expected. Hadn't read the cache page properly so just walked around the island until I was at the closest point to the cache (25m) then scrambled up the cliff. It was a bit dodgy and wouldn't recommend it but it worked out OK. Just needed to dig my fingers and toes into the loose clay/soil.
Found the cache easily then just as I was leaving heard voices. Probably other cachers but wasn't sure and was in a bit of a rush so didn't hang around to say hello.
It took 22 minutes to get from the car to the cache and back.
Great cache. One of the highlights of the weekend!
Many thanks

A short knee high wade to the Island and a steep climb bought me to this cache midst thick flax. Gave the cricket a breath of fresh air.
I needed this cache with its D/T rating to fill a hole in my D/T grid for a challenge cache. Luckily BaldEd had packed two pairs of old shoes and boots in the cachemobile before setting off for Dunedin. So we had lunch first to wait for the time of low tide and then it was a change of footwear and we were off. The water was halfway up out calves wading out and then it was onto the rope. I was expecting it to be a little thicker to make it easier for a pair of arthritic hands to grab on to. Also with being vertigo-challenged to was going to push the my limits. We finally made it to the top when it decided to hail and then rain. Then it blew a gale. So putting the weather out of our minds we ventured on towards the cache. To start off with it was easy following the path but then it disappeared. Ah, well, it was then off bush-bashing until we came onto the trail again at the view waypoint. Luckily we could see the cliff edge whenever we ventured close to it. Finally it was off to the GZ. It was at this time the sun came out, but hey, I was used to this weather change because in Auckland we can have all four seasons in one day, but I don't think I have ever had them all within a 10 minute period. The cache was finally located at the base of the tree mentioned but to get there meant walking through wet flax bushed - every cacher's (wet) dream. We both signed the logbook and then made our way back to the rope using the same methodology - some trail following, some bushbashing. We didn't do too bad down the rope and had an easy crossing back to the cachemobile. There we dried our feet, changed back to dry footwear. This was certainly the cache of the day.
Cheers for a fantastic journey and great cache.

This was the Cache of the Day. Tufty was in need of a 4/4.5 cache for his D/T grid, so this cache was on his 'Must Do' list. We therefore planned our attack to occur right at low tide. We were somewhat disappointed to note that even so we would not retain dry feet in the attempt. Fortunately I had 2 old pairs of shoes that could be sacrificed. With the water crossing achieved we faced the next obstacle - the cliff climb. For two persons well into their seventh decade this was no mean feat in the decidedly wet conditions.
However just as we were congratulating ourselves the heavens opened. High winds, hail and rain lashed done on us! The view point was soon achieved but those last few metres to the cache took some doing. Bodies were scratched from the foliage and then wettened from the wet harakeke as we made those last few metres towards the cache. It was with some relief when the cache was spotted 8m metres away - but it took us another 3-4 mins to cover that short distance. There were smiles and congratulatory messages all around as the logbook was signed. The problem then remained of getting back to dry land. I wouldn't say we got lost, but for a while we went quite a bit off off our outbound leg before we found the track back to the rope. The descent was carefully undertaken with the ground and trees being wet and slippery. The return water crossing was a piece of 'old ease' and we were soon warming our toes in dry socks and shoes. Time now to head to the scout camp for Mega2012 registration. Thanks for a great cache. It get a Favourite from me.

When we arrived the water was about 10 cm high but we thought it was the best we would get so we went across. At the island we didn't get a fix better than 6 km precise so after half an hour we gave up. But than we discovered the water was lower now. So we went up again, with a better fix this time. And found the cache in no time. Thanks for this great cache!!!

This made for an entertaining morning.
I wasn't sure how far out the tide goes so just dived in there and crossed. Soon had wet feet!
The climb up the rope was pretty straightforward and then it was into the jungle for the cache - should have brought a machete!
Soon found the cache, signed the log, took the geocoin and made my way back to the rope.
The decent was a bit trickier but fortunately the tide was further out so I didn't get wet feet on the way back!
Thanks for the adventure and TFTC

awww awesum cache. Visited the shores many times but never attempted rope, until today with ingidayna. Followed our noses to the cache. TFTC
so with the tides right and castledolly having a day off we planned a mish to get the remaing caches on this side 7/7 and our 600th whop whoop we left treasure to celebrate. was thankful for the the rope and would of liked the full moon to of been as i got very wet legs but hitched shorts high and the 3 of us set off and up, not to much bush bashing and cache was signed and the rush back down before the tide rose anymore and I was a very happy lady as I now have 600 finds and a smile with the pudding got.

Well, this definitely deserves a favourite from me.
Spent a day planning the low-tide assault on this position. Armed with my GPS, Geo Uncle and Dakaotacat we managed to laugh and giggle our way across the low tide water to discover the famous rope but not before being sent out to see how deep Otago Harbour was at low tide. Geo Uncle stood bye with his camera (and sense of humour) at the ready waiting for me to disappear below the water line but it wasn't to be - lol. We were a little concerned that the rope may be missing and that being the case I was going to have to piggy-back dakotacats up the cliff
All was well once the rope was identified. A relatively straight forward approach to the GZ and we were well rewarded as Geo Uncle announced the find.
The cache is in perfect condition with the contents dry. Coordinates spot on. ty
TNLNSL TFTC. Cumbyrocks... Well done.
PS: I am on holidays but am happy to provide pics of our adventure - even the ones of dakotacats in her borrowed 'waders'climbing down the rope - too funny.

This was my second cache ever and nothing like the first! I had dropped in to see visiting geocousin skibeagle163 on my way to work and got talked into this adventure instead. So yes I did have my work clothes on - boots, dress and cardigan!
So borrowing a pair of waders, skibeagle163, my dad and I set off to find the cache. It's not easy getting up the rope with a pair of waders on that keep slipping down and the terrain is definately not suited for a dress!
However, the cache was found and all the goodies were examined. Didn't have anything to leave behind (my handbag was in the car!). The co-ordinates got us back to the rope and I made a very ungraceful descent which skibeagle163 has photos of. Waded back across the water doing my best to avoid standing on any crabs. And even better, the dress and cardigan were still in one piece.
Had a great time, will be talking about it for weeks. TFTC.

Left this towards the end of my mornings Peninsula caching to get the tide right. Arrived maybe an hour before low tide, but low enough to get across with water only up to knees. Tide was low enough to allow me to walk around behind the island (anticlockwise), until at sea level I was less than 30m from the cache. A quick climb and the job was done (minimal bush bashing). Repeat process in reverse and back in car less than 30 min after leaving it. Great cache, thanks.
I have been looking at this one (from a distance) for a while but wanted some company - so put a plan in for the time around Christmas when sonia26642 would be around . Equipped with good footwear the trip to the island was ok even in the muddy/watery layer. Could not locate a rope (?) but sonia26642 found a reasonable access - I would have preferred one a bit further from the cache but less steep even if it meant a longer bush bash... TFTC in such a cool spot!!!! #500
WHAT AN AMAZING CACHE!!!!
And what better way to spend Christmas eve, then caching the whole day?
First one of the morning, due to the fact that this was low tide.
We couldn't find the rope, so a bit of a scramble it was... Found a slightly ok looking spot, and scrambled up, using the tussock as a rope... then, would you guess, but we found that actually, it would have been easier from the other side... ah well, it then would have been more of a bush bash. Was more fun this way!
Got to the top, and actually, going through the bush, was worse than scrambling up the crazy slippery bank!
But then once nearby, the cache was easily seen. Imagine climbing all that way though, and not finding it! Haha. An awesome cache!!!
Simply amazingly fun. All caches should be like this!
Earns a power point to like the power of infinity!!!

Wow ! Quite a challenge. Even though it was low tide when I attempted the cache, the water came up over my knees. Climbing up the cliff was OK, but it seemed a lot more intimidating on the way down. The rough track around the island is virtually non existant making navigating and progress through the trees and shrubs quite difficult. I had to track backwards and forwards quite a few times to find a way through to the final cache location, and I wasn't sure how quickly the tide would come back in. The drops over the cliff near the cache are quite high, and I would certainly think a terrain rating of 4.5 is warranted given the combined hazards. Thanks for setting a challenging cache. I picked up two of the Geocoins in the cache.
Last time I was here I got away with dry feet.
Up to the ankles this time.
Up the rope, round the track and a bash through some flax.
Then as I was sure I was close to GZ I spied it.
Ran into other cachers comping up the rope on the way out. Nice to meet you!

Pleasant evening and a super low tide at a convenient time so rocked on up. Quite cool to see the wee red shrimps in the pools. Muggles followed me onto the island but no way near as close a call as for Classic Rock. Found five golf balls - someone had clearly been taking pot shots at the island! + golf balls! - nothing.
TFTC - a bunch of fun!

Garrr! So you have to add an hour to LINZ tables during daylight savings...realised too late, the trip was planned already, just hoped the spring tide and the air pressure was enough in our favour. Probably could have waded out but too many in the crew only had their school shoes and these days that sort of thing is frowned upon....
The last time we visited this island for a cache, Mrs W.E.K.A. chickened out of going up the rope, but this time she was extremely pleased with herself that she went up and down it, albeit slowly and cautiously. Although there are a few tracks, none seemed to lead directly to the cache, so we took a rather circuitous route to it, finding ourselves standing almost on top of it, before we had time to check what we were looking for. We then managed to find a more direct route back to the rope. A fun little adventure. TFTC

The tide was still going out as we biked back from "Fire Away", so crossing was a wet-to-the-knees experience. We had circumnavigated the island doing "Rock 101' so it was easy to get to within cooee of GZ. But, the last few metres were rather more frustrating. Found someone's old bivvy nearby. Went back past "Rock 101". Dry feet on the return crossing. Fun!
