Visited here today with Nelzarama - a fantastic EC. Was great to finally visit here! Thanks for placing this EarthCache - answers have been sent to the CO
What an awesome place and so fitting for an EarthCache too! Kubabelle and I visited here as it was high on my list of places I really wanted to see.Walking around was super impressive and through some reading an observation I learnt a lot about limestone and how it was formed plus what this area must have looked like a long long time ago. Thanks for placing this EarthCache for our learning, answers have been sent to the CO
What an amazing spot!!!We loved this area, so interesting! Unfortunately it was blowing a gale while we were there, so a bit windy for prolonged viewing.Answers have been sent to CO.Thanks so much for the earthcache funkymunkyzone, a fav point from us.
We are finishing our one-year trip around New-Zealand and Elephant Rock was our last destination. We already did Castle hill and it is very similar. This rock formation is always very impressive!
Visiting Elephant Rocks whilst completing the Alps to Ocean with Sidetracks women. Having a fabulous time . . highly recommend the "fully supported" option .Answers sent, thanks for the earthcache FMZ.
A very interesting location to explore. Amazin rocks and a great view of understanding some of earth past. Thanks for the cache./herrFamaxe from Sweden
Day 7: Up the WaitakiThe next bit of our journey brings us up the Waitaki on another fine but sometimes blustery day. We started the morning off wandering around Oamaru, and then drove up to visit the reservoirs and towns along the Waitaki. This proved to be yet another productive day of exploring and caching, so thanks for all the fun caches in lovely locations along the way. (End of the cut and paste bit) Heres the specific log for this cache: Spent some time wandering around the many pebbles in the area, which were interesting enough, but understanding their geologic origins added to the whole experience. We took quite a few photos of course, one of which is attached to the cache. Thanks for the lesson as always and TFTEC!
Heavy rain made navigation not easy, but nevertheless it was an impressive visit. TFTC
Another fantastic bit of geology we would have missed if not for Geocaching. TFTC
The second we have visited here, we missed the info on the second waypoint. Always a good place for a visit, the parking area has changed alot over the years, and is much bigger and safer. Thanks for placing your cache.
Ms_KR and I are on a wee cruise around Otago, starting in The North then heading to Central. Today's weather was very good for caching after lunch. It was a bit drizzly in the morning.
Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches. .

We are doing the Alps to Ocean cycle ride (MT Cook to Oamaru) and stopped here to have lunch with the "elephants". It was a hot sunny day, and we were glad to find some shade from one of the elephant rocks to eat our lunch. After lunch, we made our way around the various elephants checking them out before getting back on our bikes and heading towards Oamaru.
Thanks for the earthcache.
Thanks for the earthcache.
spent 6 great weeks in New Zealand with my The start was a bit bumpy (Cyclone Gabrielle) but then it got better and better. We travelled to both islands and discovered a lot. We photographed and filmed many beautiful things, but most of it stayed in our hearts.
Almost everywhere we stopped, a cache was already waiting for us. Most of the caches are well maintained and easy to find.
With mostly very nice weather, we saw a lot of this impressive island. In many places, caches were waiting for us, which were sometimes easy and sometimes difficult to find. This cache was also included and was successfully signed
We puzzled a lot in advance and the tours were well prepared
So this box was also well found.
now I have another on my personal cache card.
many thanks to [^] **funkymunkyzone** [^] for the effort and the cache and greetings from Germany

Second stop today after the Anatini Whale Fossil Site. Weather was blue sky, sunny, a view timid clouds towards the alps.
Amazing rock formations here, merits an Earthcache, which motivated us to have a closer look at these Elephant foots.
Thank you for the cache

Geo-Roadtrip in the South Island with TrinityNZ and JustlookingOO to collect some PWGT's and as many other caches as we can.
Having left Oamaru we were driving towards Lake Benmore and I had a sudden feeling that we would be driving close to the Elephant Rocks. I had been here once before on my daughters Year 6 camp nearly 10 years ago.
A quick look on the map and we had our small detour programmed in.
Such an amazing place! It was a SUPER windy day. The kind of day where you can lean backwards into the wind and it will hold you up! But beautiful blue skies.

What an amazing spot. I had no idea this existed in New Zealand, and am delighted the CO brought us here as part of the road trip I’m doing with JustLookingOO and LL113. It was blowing a gale and freezing cold on the day, but it was still an awe-inducing experience.

In our motorhome we took an alternative route from Oamaru to Waimate via The Elephant Rocks Kurow. Fascinating rock formations and interesting countryside. Thanks for bringing us to this spot.
Day four of our A2O odyssey.
A wet morning. Amazing site. I visited here in May but this was Ms M’s visit time.
Pity about the weather. Visited the way points. Took some photos. Discussed the questions and continued enroute to Oamaru.

We really enjoyed this spot. This was a short detour that RG72 was keen to do, and I am glad we did. The limestone formations are really cool, and got me thinking about their formation. Better still, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. TFTEC FMZ, it’s a cool spot. +1 from me.
Day 5 of a South Island road trip for RG1972 and I and today it is Lake Tekapo to Moeraki. A bit of driving then, and we need to leave time for side trips to the Cathedral cliffs and for a bit of exploring in Oamaru.
A pretty sweet day. There are hundreds of caches on our travels today, but we just drove past the majority. Nice views of the lakes on the left, and it’s the first time either of us have driven this road before and the towns like Kurow, although we have been through the towns that bookend the road many other times, from other directions. All caches found in good nick, and if they needed a bit of extra RITR paper they got it. TFTC all COs.

Busy day chasing whale fossils and elephants. Love this part of the world. Now if there were only some penguin fossils out there, but hey there are some in the fossil centre at Duntroon I recall.
#17980. This part of the country has really interesting geology. Troodles sent answers on behalf of us both. TFTC.
Day 2 of StreetWalkerNZ and my long weekend in and around Oamaru. Today we wanted to polish off the remaining unfound Mighty Oak caches as well as bike some more of the A2O series.
This was a short walk from the A2O trail, so locked up the bike (though I suspect no one would even contemplate nicking my old rusty steed) and had a wander around while SW pedaled back to get the car. These are some "pebbles"! It didn't take long to gather the information, and email sent.
Will upload the photos once I find the correct cable for my phone . Thanks for an interesting earth cache.

I started my great and unique round trip over the South Island in Christchurch.
My first major stopover was at Lake Tapeko - here I hiked up to Observation Mountain.
I then planned two days in Mount Cook NP with some unforgettable hikes. My big goal was the Mueller Hut - on a super strenuous hike I reached it.
I continued my journey over the lonely Danseys Pass to Dunedin.
Afterwards I drove along the Southern Scienic Route via Invercargill to Manapouri for some days. On this route I visited many sights and enjoyed the beautiful nature again and again.
I already booked a tour to the Doubtful Sound in advance - another highlight on my tour.
Afterwards I drove on to Queensown and Wanaka. From there I continued over the Haast Pass to the lonely Jackson Bay with storm and heavy rain. Afterwards I drove along the west coast always in pouring rain.
The rain stopped the whole west coast, but I had good rainwear with me. Only high up in Nelson the sun shone again.
Soon I reached the east coast again in Picton and Blenheim and the sun was shining again.
After a few days I travelled back to Christchurch via the beautiful town of Kaikoura.
At the end of my round trip I spent a few more days in Christchurch and its surroundings.
I visited many geological sites and found many caches on my round trip. In Rangiora I visited an event.
I travelled 3418 km and take home a lot of positive experiences.
Thanks to many beautiful caches I was also shown unique locations, historical sites and geological features.
I am overwhelmed by the fantastic and ever changing nature on the South Island of New Zealand - I will definitely come back.
Many thanks to all owners

Elephant Rocks wasn't on my plan today but I hadn't realised how close it was to the road through Danseys Pass so I had to make a detour. I only intended to stop quickly, collect the information and get back on the road. I don't know how long I spent wandering around but it was a LOT longer than intended or needed. What an awesome place. So many rocks I could see different animals in them from different angles. My photo is one that I thought looked like the head of a dinosaur with a bear holding my GPS given to me by my 9 year old neice for Christmas who decided I was lonely and needed company on my adventures. He is going to get a TB tag so she can track where he's been and see photos along the way. Thanks for an interesting earthcache funkymunkyzone

Bit of a rainy weekend so put the gumboots on and got the kids in the car for a drive out to the elephant rocks. The girls loved running round as did I. This place to awesome... I think it’s been 12 years since I was last here. Only a 30min drive I definitely need to come out here more. I love it here! TFTC

We are on our summer holiday driving around the South Island with no real idea of where we will end up each day. We are often drawn to an area that has the potential to give us a few geocaching smilies and somewhere we have not spent time exploring before. In some cases we are revisiting placed that we have been before but liked so much we are going there again.
This was one of our target caches today, we have been here before but did not do earthcaches on that trip, so it was fantastic to be able to come back to enjoy this area again.
It is a wonder that there are not more accidents here as some people think they can climb some of the rocks that are way beyond their ability. So I chose not to watch the children who were struggling while being encouraged to go further by the adults who were quite some distance from the kids. Maybe I have just done too much study on environmental risks.
Anyway we had a wonderful (but cold and windy) time here again today.
I do enjoy trying to imagine animal shapes in the rocks, which I found a couple of possibilities today.
The required answers have been sent to the CO
Thanks for placing this cache and thank you for the smiley

**This was 1 of 14 caches that was found by me on the 4rd of 19 days in New Zealand.**
**Which also was the 57th of 75 days that my travels thru southeast Asia and Oceania would last.**
After using the excellent public toilette closer to the parking I started to walk around the rocks. There where a few others visitors to. Most of seemed to be contended by walking around. But some ones, mostly the younger, climbed around on the lower rocks.
There was also some sheep grazing around. They had no interest in all socializing with an human, and walked away when I tried to get closer to them.
The answers did I send via Message center on 4th May 2019.
*During 19 days I traveled from Christchurch to Auckland in an SUV, that i also slept in during most of the nights. 5.956 km of driving did it take to visit the 351 caches that I have marked as found in c:geo.*
*Earthcaches was my main focus during the stay. And I manage to visit 106 of them. So New Zealand is right now the only country where earthcaches are my most found cache type .*
Answers to earthcaches and virtuals did I send in via Message Center close after the visit, or when this log is written in March 2019.

What a scenery, our tavel book brought us here it was worth the detour.
The children strolled around and identified lots of different stone animals. Also they loved to climb one or the other stone.

This place had that misty and mystic feeling akin to Stonehenge on the day we visited. We spent a week in the South Island with hot weather but this spot was the only part when we saw some drizzle. That just made it feel all the more magical. Thanks for this earthcache fmz.

We called in here on our way to Oamaru for the weekend. We'd previously been here a number of years ago to find the first cache that Bitsprayer published. The area never fails to require many photos to be taken - thank goodness for a digital SLR.

With Gap (of Fap and Gap)… Our journey to the bottom of the South Island has been almost two years in the planning. We were determined to make it to Oamaru Geofest. We decided to also factor in completing a couple of missions (JASMER and Virtual challenges), and the wheels started turning...
Day Four: Naseby-Danseys Pass-Oamaru
Our plan for today was to be in Oamaru by evening. We wanted to be ready for the opening of Geofest tomorrow. With the more challenging section of roadway behind us, we were now on the outskirts of our destination. From our observations of the geomap, this area is best described as being cache saturated... Although the numbers are appreciated, many placements are just links in a very long trail...
The Elephant Rocks were surreal against their rural backdrop. We have seen photos of this location and it was a wow moment to behold these rocks with our own eyes. We wandered around marvelling at these formations (like many others visiting today). Thank you for bringing us here... TFTEC.

What a great location. You have to love it when geocaching brings you to such interesting geology. Welll done.
We came this way on the BMW motorcycle to have coffee a the Flying Pig which is closed . Not much in Duntroon anymore but we had checked out the night before to see which caches would be worth while and we picked this one and a couple of others. Thank you for the information. We had an interesting explore and the back ground scientific information was great. Took some great pictures. Will post later.
We were caching out from Oamaru today and had to stop when we came past this fascinating location. Had an explore and completed the earthcache tasks. We learnt a bit from reading the cache page and inspecting the rocks. Thanks. Adding a Favourite Point.
My wife and I spent the whole day in this fascinating area. The weather was warm and sunny. The sheep sought refuge in the shade of the rock formations. We explored the Elephant Rocks and made our observations. We had our lunch at the table close to the trail head. We then enjoyed a nice afternoon in this nice countryside. Thanks for this great earthcache!

TaybeeDragon and I are off for a three day walk on Stewart Island. But we have a camper, so once you add in getting there and back, it's a three week trip. Day 7: Tekapo to Alexandra.
The plan was to cache Dansey's Pass, but we are running out of time for that. But there is no way I skip earth caches!
This is an amazing place, i am not surprised that it has been used for a movie set. This place, and the accompanying geocache description point to my basic caving rules: Rocks on top? holes underneath. There are caves here, just need to find the entrances!
Had a wonderful time wandering around here, many thanks for showing me this place. Gets a favourite.

On our trip through the wonderful New Zealand, we also visited this beautiful Earthcache. We have enjoyed the magnificent view and learned the geology as well
Thank you for showing us this interesting nice place. This will be one of our favorites.

WoombyeCats visiting from Sunshine Coast Australia... easy to get to while on the A2O cycle track or by car, awesome spot to bring kids for a run around, or just to view the amazing rocks and scenery.
Today, Ninalila and I went to Duntroon to visit the museum.
After that, Elephant Rock with the Narnia movie location, some basalt columns and fossils of whales.
The day was warm, sunny and quiet. No one else around with snow on the mountains in the background.
Funny to see the erosion on the rock, and it looks like Castle Hill
Thank you for the earthcache and the discovery

On the vanished trail, fefe.adrien and I stopped at the elephant rocks.
Such unusual and funny rock formations !
The erosion on the limestone could be really impressive, it looks like Castle Hill.
We understand why they used these landscapes for filming movies.
Thank you for the discovery !

Visiting Oamaru for a wee family 'long weekend' holiday.
Heading up the Waitaki investigating Rock art, fossils and any thing else interesting along the way. What a fantastic spot! Awesome rocks & if you looked closely at some of the exposed bits you could see some pretty neat fossils. Boys loved running around and hiding/climbing..."can we come back another day"....LOL. Great fun. A very informative and interesting earthcache. Thanks for making us stop by!

We had lots of fun exploring the rocks, this is a beautiful spot. It only takes about 15 minutes to walk around the rocks & they're close to the carpark, making for a quick walk. It was interesting to do this earthcache & learn a little more about the rocks. Answers have been emailed to CO, TFTC.
I spent an enjoyable four weeks in New Zealand. I saw a lot of beautiful natural sites. On the way south, I visit this place. Thanks for the cache, greetings from Prague.
During my trip around South Island of course I wanted to do some geocaching as well. But where to start and where to stop? Sometimes there were powertrails along major roads but that would have really slowed me down. And I had come to New Zealand to get to see the highlights rather than pimping my statistics...
Thus, I created a pocket query with earth caches, virtuals and also letterboxes so I could easily see if there were any along my way. If so, I would happily do them! I like earthcaches! And still think I am not doing enough of them. Often they require a bit of an effort but at the same time they are educational and you often get to see interesting scenery. It is more rewarding than plucking a film canister from a park bench...
Whenever I stopped for a photo (or earth cache) I also checked my other pocket query for traditional caches etc. In the end, this seemed a good compromise to combine travelling with geocaching.
Another location I probably wouldn't have found without geocaching. Quite a sight! Looks quite interesting. And funny with all the sheep grazing amongst the rocks and a small boy having fun climbing them.

Thanks for this interesting earthcache at this great place.
Many greetings from Germany, Nariza & Korshi

Went a roadtrip today to reach my goal of 1,000 before the new year. With a muggle we put a pin in the map (Duntroon) so off we went, as we needed to meet out goal didn't start caching till we reached Oamaru. Although it wasn't the ideal weather we have great fun and at several of the stops along the way decided to get thermos and choc bickies out.
This is a great spot... bit of a stretch of imagination but can see why it was called such a thing. Have send answers to owners, GPS jumped a bit but hopefully answered questions.

BBear44 and I stayed our final night of our three night camper van trip in Duntroon at the domain. Today the aim is to get earth cache bling and do a bit of cycling before heading home.
Thanks for bringing us here and for being part of the reason that I can qualify for my bling. I emailed you the answers for BBear44 and me.
