Out with Buz21b today. Really enjoyed looking at the fossils here! And I learned something new too. A FP from me
Hey found with TDino on this nice sunny day..learnt what a strike was and saw some awesome fossils and petrified tree.
This afternoon after a walk with a friend at Nobbys, I decided to finally go for this earthcache especially as Cosmic Quest was currently happening. It was just my luck that it was low tide so I decided I would collect sea glass as I did the earth cache. Pictured is my seaglass collection from todays visit. Sent answers to CO and was correct. TFTC!
Arrived here on a very cold and windy afternoon and high tide to add to it. There were a few people in the nearby pools but no swimming for me today. Thanks Chipproo for the earthcache.
Really liked this Earthcache, certainly quite a few of these types of geological formations around, but never get sick of seeing themThanks Chippyroo for showcasing this place and for contributing to this great game for myself and others to enjoy.
Lovely spot, next to the Newcastle Ocean Baths which have been done up and are even better than they were. I waded through knee-depth water to make the observations here, and have probably made a dog's breakfast of them. Answers have been sent. Thanks for the EarthCache, Chippyroo.
Found on a visit to Newcastle and Maitland to see the in-laws. While walking the AL with GeodogZelda, we passed by this EC, so stopped to observe the rock platform and the features of this EC. I was quite fascinated by the petrified trees. I have only seen them at one other location in NSW, around Scone on a road trip 5 years ago.The tide was partially in, but I could still see the necessary features to gather the information. The geology lesson in the description was easy enough to understand, without overwhelming me with hard to understand facts and figures. Sometimes, I feel I need to ask my geologist son to help me when attempting an EC, and worry I will get it wrong.Answers sent. TFTEC
We came here in late afternoon with the tide starting to come in but had time to explore the rock platform before our feet were too wet. The compass was used at the various sites and other discoveries made as we walked around, amazing how many logs and stumps are out there. Thanks to Chippyroo for the extensive info in the listing, I really learned a lot and enjoyed the practical lesson, wish I'd studied Geology at school instead of French and Latin!
Came out here at low tide today as last time I was here I could t see anything! Nice cool morning for some slippery rocks. Cool to see the petrified wood. Answers sent TFTC
Hello Chippyroo thank you for the cache
A lovely rock platform.
Answers will be on there way soon.
This was one of many caches found on our way to Newcastle to see our grand children.

Discovered this fascinating rock platform a couple of weeks ago whilst in Newcastle for a few days caching. Sent my best answers to CO and guess they must be satisfactory as I am now claiming my smilie. We have a similar Earth Cache in my neck of the woods. Thanks for the opportunity to discover this area.
I love being shown these geological features thanks Chippyroo, it’s EC’s like this one that more people should make the effort to do.
Thank you
We were here today on our NSW coast leg of our ‘Around Australia’ trip.
We set off back at the start of 2021 expecting to go around Australia in 12 months - here we are still going in 2023 with about 1/3 of the island left to lap.
My (Geo Mum) personal Favourite experience: Too many to choose, Finding Gold and Opal high up there, working on a CQ cattle station was awesome too.
Favourite location: Gibb River Road/ Kimberley closely followed by Nhulunbuy/ Arnhem Land.
Best paid activity: Horizontal falls
Best free activity: Kings Canyon Rim Walk, Matt Wright putting us up for free in one of his helicopters was pretty awesome. (Let’s not talk about his current situation )
Most interesting location. Arnhem Land
What you have learnt: I wish I had something insightful to put in here, if I though really hard about it perhaps I do but I guess the most practical things I learnt are: Mango sap burns, midges are xxxx’s and dog beds are a versatile alternative to real furniture.
Miss the most: Family & Friends, closely followed by my garden and my chooks.
Look forward to the most: The Whitsundays
Regrets? Worrying so much and not heading off years ago!
TFTC
*Sorry for the copy and paste log but I’m notorious for getting behind with logs and fluffing them up!

Not too many coastal Earthcaches highlight petrified wood! So this EC was really quite interesting, especially with it's several waypoints that were all close by for us to observe. Also quite uncommon to take strike readings for an EC too, so appreciated the unique logging requirements for this and had a lot of fun walking around the Wave-Cut Platform!
Answers have been sent to the CO for myself and deshadybear, and a pic attached of us on the site!

I cant remember exactly what day my daughters and I collected the answers for this, I've only just found the information in my notebook and sent the answers to the CO and got the okay to log it.
It was a great day, the girls enjoyed exploring the rock pools, and it's fascinating to see so much petrified wood when you actually open your eyes and look for it. TFTC

I loved coming here and doing this earth cache and hopping across the rocks and actually finding wood in amongst the rocks. It’s amazing what you learn from geocaching.

An early tide, and the swell has dropped, so a good chance to grab this, and one other along the Newcastle Coast. I found it to be an interesting exercise, and had a good look around at the "Wood" Thanks for showing me these Natural Wonders. Answers sent and verified.
GrimRaider and I visited this rock platform to check out the interesting formations and fossils. I had done my homework and checked out a video about strike and dip I found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azlKWV2N9p4 as the video on the cache page would not work for me. I brought along a compass and visited the spots and attempted to take calculations. It was trickier then I thought though I have sent answers to the CO. What a cool earthcache and a new topic for me, even after 300+ earthcaches completed. Thanks for the very interesting lesson and location.

I was having a great day out caching in the area today and continued onto this cache as I was nearby doing another one. The weather was brilliant and the tide was low, so I was able to get close to the dykes and the petrified stumps . Learnt some new things and had a great time . Thanks for the cache chippyroo fav point for the fun

Another into town on my pushing to grab this Earth Cache. Enjoyed it. Answers have been sent to the CO and have been given the go ahead to log. TFTEC Chippyroo.
Came here for the 3rd time today to double check my numbers as the phone seams to make up numbers, answers sent to CO and Oked. Came out here some 55 years ago to explore the platform area, but it never occured to me that there were trees there at some stage. wWe even came here with science class to look at life out here. Nice to come back for a revisit. The tide was coming in so I was lucke to get to all the way pionts.

Found at twilight on a break from visiting my son who is in John Hunter hospital after a motorbike accident
Tide was low enough to attempt.
Ahhh this brings back my geology lessons from Uni. Never thought I would have to use these terms again.
Thanks for bringing me here Chippyroo.
Fav point as I have always liked walking around this area when I was a kid growing up in Newcastle.

Exploring Newcastle today and was able to learn heaps through these geocaches
After getting lunch via some chips from the baths I went looking at this cache. I never knew you could find petrified wood at the beach and after slipping in a rock pool and subsequently getting my shoe wet, I chucked them off and had a good look.

Awesome experience - was particularly fascinated by the petrified tree logs.
Had a blast of a weekend in Newcastle with lots of great caches and many favourite points given. Weather was chilly but perfect for caching. Parking not to many problems, but walked most of it anyway. Loved the walk along the Newcastle coast!

Even though it was absolutely pouring down when we got here we really wanted to check this out as we hadn't seen petrified wood/trees before.
What a great sight this was thanks to a low tide (not so much the tidal wave falling from above).
Measurements were taken, photos were taken and we got the hell out of there.
Thanks Chippyroo for highlighting this great piece of geological history, a very easy decision to award a fav point here!
P.S. This was a much angrier place Sunday the 9th morning, the waves were washing the parked cars at one point. Still a great spot though.

Happened to be here at low tide and good timing for my first earth cache!
Learned so much geology thanks Chippyroo! Been down this esplanade many times in the past but never walked across the rock platform so was very cool to see all the formations and petrified trees! The little rock pools were also fascinating to see all teeming with life.
A great evening spent here at sunset when the heat of the day was starting to ease and a container ship was entering the harbour;)

Really enjoyed walking along the platform today. Luckily we hit it at low tide so we got to see a lot of formations +. I remember coming here on a school excursion many, many years ago. I was quite enthralled with tessellated pavements as I recall. And honeycomb weathering. This was definitely a favourite Earthcache for us. Thank you for the lesson Chippyroo.

After Port Macquarie, we spent a few days at Newcastle before heading back to Sydney. We enjoyed Newcastle a lot, especially the great bars and restaurants around the waterfront.
This earth cache was quite interesting. With the tide coming I hurried to the different waypoint, only to discover that the GPS on my phone was hopelessly inaccurate. Despite these minor inconveniences I think I managed to collect the answers to the questions. I found it quite interesting to see petrified wood amidst the rocks.

We stopped off to undertake this Earthcache this morning. We very much enjoyed wandering around and finding not only the Petrified Wood at the waypoints referred to but plenty more as well, and some very interesting pieces there were indeed! We made our Field Notes and have subsequently submitted our answers to the CO. Thanks so much for the very interesting Earthcache and for having bought us to this fascinating location - our first time to have seen Petrified Wood on a beach! A favourite point awarded and greetings from Zimbabwe
While visiting Newcastle we completed this EC. With a full moon there was also a king tide while we were, very hard to be able to spot the required information.
I do like this swimming pool area & 1 day hopefully Port Macquarie will have its own,
A FP given for the area.
Thanks Chippyroo for placing this EC

nice afternoon out decided as we drove past that we might do this earthcache on earthcache day tide was still up,so a few wet shoes as we hopped from area to area , but still able to get the info required , so much history right beneath our feet that we don't take the time to look

Amazing the things you can learn while Geocaching, we have done the earth cache further down the coast with the petrified stump so this was a great compliment. The tide was still a bit how to be doing this but we managed to only get our shoes wet a few times when the waves rolled in. Found with kingfisher_au for the earthcache souvenir, thanks for the lesson and bringing us to this place. A favourite point from me.

I was up in Newcastle today and, seeing it was low tide, I wandered down onto the rock platforms to have a go at this earthcache. I always have my trusty old magnetic compass from my orienteering days in my backpack, so it was good to be able to put it to use!
As others have mentioned, one of the WOOD waypoints had me scratching my head for a while, but the CO accepted my answer and the other two were very impressive specimens. Many thanks for bringing me to this interesting piece of coastline and for the lesson on its formation.

Accidental genius meant we were here at GZ at the end of a very long day of caching right at low tide. We were debating whether to bother with this one, but I'm very glad we did as the features of this cache were interesting and something I'd not seen before. Seff (seffnjarah) has submitted answers OBO the group. TFTEC
What a great way to end an interesting day of caching around the Newcastle area. We came across this one a little fortuitously and nearly didn't even attempt it. We are gaoled we did. The petrified wood is in great condition, and reminded me of a petrified forest I saw recently in South Island NZ. We struggled with one of the waypoints a little, but the CO was happy with our answers. Thanks for bringing us here and showing us this wonderful geological wonder.
After a welcome good night's sleep following a long trip down from Brisbane, Swellerfungus, Dez (JezNDez), Ms Krankenwagen and my daughter and I were all out for our first full day of caching at the Morisset Mega event, picking up a number of caches on our to-do list. This was the last location we visited and after a long day we were tossing up whether to complete this earth cache or just head back to camp to put the feet up for a while. With our visit corresponding with low tide through sheer luck, we decided it was a good omen and made our way down on to the rock plat form.
A cracker of a cache, observing some interesting features that we would not have known about otherwise. We did have trouble at one WP spotting the required object and hope we found the right thing. TFTC

We came into Newcastle so the little one could have a play in the canoe pool. We parked at horseshoe beach and walked around. I noticed it was low tide so ket the rest of the family walk on whilst i ducked onto the wave cut platform. Wondered around abd collected the answers. TFTC
We were staying in a hotel very close to the beach, so I had the opportunity to walk down to this part of the coastline and have a look at the Earthcache. I made sure to check the tides and noted that we could come here after breakfast.
My little son was quite excited about seeing the fossilised trees ("dinosaur trees") before we headed off to the swimming beach where he could jump over the waves. We spent some time walking between the waypoints and looking at the amazing fossils -- I've never seen petrified trees in the ocean. I have seen them in other places, such as at the Petrified Forest in Namibia, but that's very much inland.
After measuring the strike of the tree stumps, we headed over to the igneous intrusion (dyke). I spent a bit of time explaining to my son how this was like a volcano pushing magma up through the crack and this lava then cooling and blocking up the crack.
Thanks for the fascinating earthcache, especially for showing us these geological features. Answers have been sent in a mail.

Wednesday 30 August 2017 - another glorious Winter's day in the low 20s finding 4 caches (2 EarthCaches & 1 trad in Newcastle, 1 trad at Caves Beach Swansea). Unfortunately the hide tides meant that we could not complete 3 Earthcaches - 2 in Newcastle and one at Caves Beach.
We started this cache on the hope that the high tide would not hinder us identifying the strikes. We were only able to identifying the strike of the dyke but not the rest due to the rough wave action. As we were only passing through the city time did not permit us to wait for low tide. Maybe next time we pass through this beautiful shoreline. Thx Chippyroo.

On our way to Newcastle for the Ice Hockey, time to check out the waterfront. We were impressed with the building and construction around the city, seems to be on the improve since I was here last (almost 10 years ago now). The weather had turned and this cache got harder! We weren't getting wet from the ocean water, we were getting wet from all other angles. I used a dip and strike app which has been pretty unreliable in the past - either that or I just don't know how to use it properly... could be the real case - add water and I've got some interesting results! Logging with permission - thanks for the earthcache, Chippyroo!

Wrong time of day for me here. Unless of course I had my board shorts. Low tide is way too early for me to attempt while I'm in town. Liked the description. Thanks.
We took our walk on the platform and have never seen anything like it. Known how it was made, no matter what it was called. We really enjoyed this EC intensively to explore. This is once trees were and these were petrified, unimaginable. The dike is also fascinating. In addition, we have seen so much honeycomb on the coast, now we have a feeling for the small sand grains that run around and make the unique little bowls. The responses of the strike we sent the owner and got back quite quickly the log permission.

Whilst spending a bit of time in newcastle, and relaxing at the ocean pools, decided to finally attempt this Earthcache. I think it might have been high tide at the time, so getting to and from the WP's took a bit longer than expected. Went back up to the lookout to answer the other question. As it was a nice afternoon, decided to take some photos. However, dropped the lens cap in the water, and after a scramble down couldn't find it enjoyed the location however and it was good to finally get this one done. TFTC!!! #857

What a great bit of local history. I enjoyed this geocache and finding the petrified wood in particular. How cool! Brought some trackable along for the great view too. Thanks so much for putting together such a great learning cache.
We pulled up here a few months ago to be greeted by gale force winds and developing rain....
Today it was pretty perfect, the kids loved the spot, loved hunting around the pools for crawlies and bits of petrified wood.
Another little bit of the region I probably would never have been to....

9991. Tried out this great Earthcache during one of my many visits to Newcastle.
I love a good Earthcache. And today I managed to visit 2 beauties !! After visiting Nobby's Honeycomb I attempted this one. Low tide made it quite easy to access the required sites, however there were quite a few bluebottles around and my son managed to fall over and hurt himeslf ! Ouch ! No stiches required just a bandage... Gathered most of the answers and sent them off to the CO. A very interesting Earthcache. The Dyke was facinating and I'm pretty sure I've seen another like it here in Australia. It made me do a bit of googling and now I'm a little bit wiser on how these features are formed (which of course is one of the reasons for Earthcaches ! )
Thanks Chippyroo ! Favourite Point ! And my 100th Earthcache as well !

Had a very low tide, thanks to the full moon, so a good view of the various features.
Sand seems to have covered the honeycomb rock listed, but there are plenty of other examples nearby.
Quite amazing to see how many petrified forest remains there are in the foreshore around this region.
Thanks, Chippyroo, for the info you've provided, and for approving our answers!

It was high tide when I came to do this with Mr Roo. He didn't believe I could get the answers, but I have seen a lot of petrified wood in my travels so I felt certain from the couple of bits I could see that the answers where obtainable without getting wet. Chippyroo gave the consent and groundspeak get some more records for international earth cacheing day. Thanks for the earth cache.
Out with Paul the hippy today to grab a earth cache for the international earthcaching day. Got to this one and was high tie I didnt feel like a swim so Paul had a go at answering the questions. Great location TFTC
Found during my first roadtrip to the Gold Coast and Brisbane. The original intention was to go run the Gold Coast marathon, but that was soon changed en-route - it became a 2-week 5000km geocaching roadtrip !
Now heading back south homewardbound I spent the sunny morning walking around Newcastle admiring the views.
I do enjoy earthcaches, as I end up discovering much more than I otherwise would from guidebooks. And these EC notes were very informative as I admired the WPs in detail. Very clever and obviously professional cache notes. The discovery of the petrified trees here was a highlight of the trip for me, and after 130 earthcaches, this ranks near the top for me.

Thanks for the EC, Chippyroo - a definite favourite from me for a most enjoyable experience!

Enjoyed a geology lesson and a wander around at low tide today. I used to fish off the rocks about halfway between the basalt dyke and the petrified wood - the best whiting of my life caught there. And a few small sharks too. Sent through my answers and achieved a positive response. Thanks team Chippyroo for the effort in developing this, and the vast amount of information. A fun adventure and a great way to add a bit of variety to the caches in town. TFTC

First cache in the morning and such a nice one. The coastline here is really stunning, we also a look at the rock pool. Many thanks for this lovely cache!
TFTEC!! What an amazing place!! We often get Italian takeaway from our favourite restaurant in the Junction & sit in the car at the nearby carpark & watch the water & ships at night here. Luckily it was low tide & off we went. We learnt so much from this Earthcache! I would never have known this was here if it wasn't for Geocaching! The dyke was so interesting & Mr Mayers had to point out the Chill Margins as I couldn't understand what they were. So cool! & visible from Google Earth! Wow! Thank you so much for this Earthcache! I have a new love for them as I love learning all about the environment & the history.
On a beautiful day with Team-Tonka we set out to find this earth cache.
it did become a little wet but that's how we like it.
love walking the rocks do it a lot in summer.

I finally completed this one after it being on my radar since I started caching. This cache was really fun, looking through all the rockpools and learning about the geology.
Thanks for the cache Chippyroo

I came in town to get my car checked out and decided to try this one as I do not usually come in town all that often. I had wanted to do this one a week earlier with my wife and son, but she said I couldn't take him out on the rock pools (probably for the best, but I've probably taken him to worse terrain geocaches...), so now was the time. And it would be low tide in about thirty minutes, so perfect timing. I parked at the lighthouse car park and enjoyed the walk over. It was starting to get dark so I knew I had to get a move on. It took me a little while to get the first bearing and I had trouble finding the third log. The dyke was pretty amazing and I enjoyed the different textures from the sides to the middle (I looked at it again on G maps and its huge). I took the well worn stairs shortcut back to the road and my shoes squeaked all the way back to the car. Thanks for the very informative earthcache, could almost have been split into three it has so much information!
Thanks for the great geology lesson; I enjoyed it all very much!

Nice to bring me here, even though it was not the lowest tide, so finding was not east.

I had visited this location previously when we visited Nobby's. Luckily, the tide was down this time. It was interesting learning about Honeycombing, which lead to me making an EC about it just up the coast a bit.
TFTEC Chippyroo!

Find #4 of 4 different Types of caches found / attended today. While I had been to the nearby bathes many times in the 60's and 70's I don't particularly remember my father showing me the fossilised trees on the platform here. (I have seen a few others around Newcastle and Lake Macquarie). Will post some photos.
I was trying to work out if something that I noticed on the dyke was man-made, as the holes were so consistent, but Rachel was kind enough to explain their origin. Glad the tide was out, as I would have tried at least 3 other times, but unable to.
Along with a few waymarks found as well it has been a great day.
Brought through for mileage: 12-12-12 Event, 3 Bros NSW, Auckland NZ'13, B 2 B Travel ingot, Czech 2007 Geocoin, G Cookie Earth Cache 10 Year Celebration Coin, Iconic Bridges 2012, Mr. Deep Blue (Smurf) TB, cache critters Baa, Neigh Neddy, and Oink, Natures Camo CITO, Nothing Runs Like A Deere TB, NZ Mega 2013 GCookie Coin, Partysmurf (Mr. Blue), and trackable shirts.

What a great way to learn how the platform has been formed. Have tried a couple of times in the past, but at the wrong times with too high a tide. Able to get the required info, and permission to log granted.

TFTEarthCache Rachel and Dan, well worth it.

We got the okay to log this one. We did it as the tide was coming in so we kept a close eye on the approaching waves. Our GPS does not show the lovely photos or graphics in the field, but we managed to work it all out on our last day in Newcastle. Cheers from Canada.

We were there at 3:23 PM on an absolutely perfect day All was bright and sparkling - so different from the 2 or 3 other times that we have been here and attempted this EC. Visiting the platform was so informative and "finding" the petrified wood was amazing - who would have thought? Bet that is not widely known - if it was it would probably be dug out and vandalised [B)]
However I had noticed before the igneous intrusion, but thought it was man made - eg a drain cover [:o)] Now every time we pass by this platform I will look at it in a different way.
Thanks Chippyroo.

Beautiful day at Newcastle Wave-Cut Platform at low tide this morning, found the dyke okay and was enlightened by the explanation of the honeycombing (always wondered about that), I had a little difficulty with the petrified wood but seemingly good enough for a pass!
Used to surf here back in the 60's before leg-ropes were invented (boy were there some dings up against the wall at high tide!).
Also had my first Scuba dive here with my new tanks that I walked in off the street and bought from Reg A Baker's sports store (no qualifications required back then). I had been watching Lloyd Bridges in Sea Hunt and was under the impression that tanks lasted many hours! Quite a shock to the system when they ran out, especially when you are on your own (didn't know about diving buddies back then!).
Thanks for bringing me back and TFTC Chippyroo!!

This was an interesting one. We wanted to do this one, but were afraid it was high tide. What shall we say... it was high tide. But we gave it a try and got close to the mentioned points.
Our guess was good enough and we got a logging permit. Thanks very very much for this.
TFTC and a favorite point.
Greetings from Germany.
