Sadly, it's time for this onion to be thrown out in the compost heap...
The hide area was perfect for a unique and tricky hide - and it's not a place that could be damaged by the vigorous searching that went on - but it wouldn't be nearly so much fun changing to a less difficult hide.
If anyone does wonder where the Onion was, just email us and we'll tell you

Checking after the record rainfall last week. The cache is in perfect condition, nice and dry... unfortunately the flooding has rearranged the hide area considerably.
This will probably have to become an "unchallenging" hide.
Got muggled by Rufus and the Teapot Army...

Third time lucky!
Had a search of the pantry a couple of weekends ago, with no success. A desperate email to the COs was unfortunately returned when I was back at home, but I tried again with Hevic last week. A search of a likely spot based on the email came up with nothing, and when it started to get too rainy and too dark we gave up. The pantry being well stocked with fresh greens didn't quite help, either.
The luck came with a huge hint from the COs, which arrived in my inbox a few days ago (thanks so much daywalk!). I took Hevic and catipotati along, and catipotati was the one to finally say "what's this?" Finally, the Onion was found. What a struggle!
At the same time, what an effort for a cache like this. Thanks so much daywalk - a favourite point for sure!

Finally getting back into caching after a very very long drought! What a great re-introduction to the fun!
I've been to GZ twice in the last few days, but the pantry has made sure the onion is elusive for now even if the fruit, cutlery, main course and after-dinner mints aren't. I will return soon, though!
Checking while passing. All good, the onion is nice and dry. Some of the items in the pantry are a bit past their 'best before' date and unfit for human consumption but they'll still do the job.
Routine check - cache ok but bother, someone's been in a "tearing" hurry and repairs are needed.
Still not entirely sure how I managed it but finally got this one! I have to confess that I had some assistance with the initial puzzle but the work at GZ was all mine! Everything at GZ is in good order. TFTC
Found at 4:56:00 p.m. on 29/08/2013.
Well AT LAST - I peeled the Onion.
I have probably tried this cache about twenty times!!!!
I just happened to be passing today and thought "Why Not?".
I had little confidence in finding it despite having a pretty good idea where to locate the final - although my previous track-record didn't look too impressive.
3 minutes later I thought "Hang On -What's That" - And there it was......
It's even my closest unfound cache - Smillies All 'Round

debsnz did the work to get the co-ords but sent me into the 'kitchen' to find the onion. She should have known better! In the end it was a team effort, with debsnz finding the onion but my strength was needed to peel it
Solved the code cracker one wet afternoon but little did we realise that was only half the puzzle! Visited the 'kitchen' and found the cutlery draw quickly, along with enough fruit to make a fruit salad but not much else for our efforts. Hmmmmm there has to be more to this than we first thought so gave things time to stew a bit longer, back for a another rummage in the kitchen but in the end needed a nudge from the CO for our third and final hunt in the kitchen to be successful. Found with Aoraki Sheep.
Onion is nice and tidy in its new bag. The kitchen is pretty overgrown at the moment - that could be a definite advantage to interested cooks...
Found this one with my brother but still took a while to find and had to rely on a few hints from Hinemoana but eventually managed to find it.

Kitchen was a bit hot and cold in places today. Finally had everything we need and a meal was shortly cooking. Kia ora for the cache daywalk.
Quality control visit - tut, tut, cupboard door was removed at some stage. Have left it just slightly ajar...
14/11/12 repaired the cutlery. All good to go.

I had been putting this one off for a while, not sure why! The puzzle was not as difficult as anticipated, and I had the co-ords pretty quickly. Reading the past logs gave me some inspiration for ideas. Approaching GZ, spotted a few likely candidates; some of them quite amusing! Found the cutlery draw pretty quickly, but finding the onion took a bit of time. Can't believe I missed it really! Enjoyed this cache very much, thanks very much for setting it up!
Yay got this on the Mega hunt with Wethreefourdices, CacheManChris a Castlewood_Crew.
Yay a great puzzle and sneak hide which I missed the last time. Master 14 sussed this out quickly, we then had to hurry to re hid as the amount of cachers out and about was fantastic. TFTC

#4237. Gen Custer was about to leave when we arrived; good to chat with him before we moved into the kitchen. With three of us searching there were nearly too many cooks. We spotted a number of interesting things, but not the final. Pleased when KiwiChris found something of interest. TFTC.
16:10 GenCuster (Master Chef extraordinaire) and JC Cache Dawg (Kitchen Hand) peeled the onion. All meals served on time, at the correct temperature, to budget and to rapturous applause. Cheers, GC.
(And I was looking right at the cache yesterday too! Blame it on the weather. It's 6° here now, sunny and warm. That's double the temperature at the last two caches today and no snow...)

Solved the puzzle a long time ago, but GZ is not easily accessible using public transport, so had to await a ride from Troodles and streetwalkernz, down from Wellington for the MEGA. After finding various 'ingredients', we were about to leave when I noticed something that did not look quite right, retrieved it and successfully 'peeled the onion'
Many thanks. daywalk, for a magnificent puzzle and a fantastic hide.

Puzzle was quickly solved but suspected that the actual find may be more troublesome and this proved correct. At least it had stopped raining but the area around GZ was quite slippery and showed many elephant tracks as it was a popular cache during the Mega.
We slowly peeled back various layers, but the cache itself proved elusive until KiwiChris spotted something. Phew, many hands make kitchen light work.
Thanks for an imaginative cache.

TFTC. A night caching adventure with fellow Mega attendees ftom Christchurch. High entertainment was had by all and we were frequently excited, only to find that their are several layers to an onion!!!
A favourite vote from me.
A favourite vote from me.
Solved the puzzle without any probelms then off to GZ.
On arrival I recognsed the place as I found the cache that used to be near here, which was another excillent cache.
This one, like the old cache that was here, wasn't a straight foward find. We hunted around the kitchen finding everything but the Onion, a nudge in the right direction and we got there. We had misunderstood some of the clues, thinking they were leading us to the Onion when they were taking us to other items.
Well worth a favourite.

JustMeG had really peeled the first layers off this onion before we got to Dunedin. T the onion patch Mr The Wanglers really threw all into getting this one and found the first decoy. Little G found the next decoy before Mr The Wanglers came up with the onion and started peeling layers. Some layers made him cry so was handed over to Magic who had magic powers over onions and was able to get to it's core.
A meal can almost always be improved by adding an onion or two. I was not the one to retrieve the cache having left my gumboots in the wrong vehicle. Fantastic cache was glad we had the notes on hand to get into it.
Visited while in Dunedin for the Mega. Out night caching with others from around the country.
Thanks for the cache.

Wow! This was a very clever and very involved cache, but we got there in the end. Very satisfying. TFTC.
mum solved the puzzle, and we found what we needed in the kitchen quite quickly. Loved all the clues at the GZ.
21/10/12 Just to keep the fun going, 'solved' this (haha) as part of my mission (successful) to log at least one of every available cache type in Dunnnies today (21st). But a big fail in the kitchen, which is unusual for me 'cause rumour has it that I'm 'very' good in the kitchen... Even as part of an impromptu 'Mega2012 Cookoff' it was elusive. T2C (talking 2 cacher) the next day I realised that I was right, just not sharp enough in the heat(s) of the moment. So after I've finished logging some caches, while the weather is alternating between hail (cold), snow (warmer), rain (miserable) and not raining (slightly less miserable), and after JC Cache Dawg awakens from his nap on me (in the comfort of my van, after real coffee, pâté, hummus & oranges for lunch), we shall go forth and conquer! GC.
Mega caching trip with Ingidayna, Wethreefourdices and Cachemanchris. Easy find for Mr 14, we thought we were hot, but turns out we were cold. TFTC
Love these puzzles had coords in a jiffy. The find was a different story. Can't say much except it is excellent and keeps you guessing. Thank you so much for the effort in placing this cache. GREAT JOB. A

9971... We peeled, sliced, diced and saute..... a thoroughly enjoyable solve and a favourite for us, bumped into niteowlz and Stretch0, nice to catch up with you again. Many thanks for a nicely themed cache.
Ghostgums, gunnie69, Ozibags, thefourbees, Kaisho53 and MrMeccano were on a 6 day escapade to Dunedin to attend the mega and this was our second day. After a bit of a wet & windy day 1, day 2 looked more promising. We had spent the morning touring around the north side of the harbour and got as far as blueskin bay before returning.
After lunch it was into the north eastern suburbs. It was getting late in the afternoon and the weather god's had packed up.
THis one took 2 visits. The puzzle itself wasn't too bad but once at GZ, our initial delight turned into cries of frustration. We had enough bits and pieces to conjure up a might stew which would have been welcome but that wasn't what we were here for.
The CO was contacted for a hint but they weren't about to give a leg up to a group of brisbanites - theat wouldn't be fair. So we left.
Half an hour later we were back and the weather was worse. Still nothing. And then the sky opened up and a ray of sunshine came down from above and illuminated a spot that had been ignored, the lightning clapped and the thunder boom, the stew was complete and we were a bunch of happy and very wet cachers.

Well the puzzle was interesting but the puzzle at GZ was a real nasty affair!
We searched for ages finding dead ends, and we decided to put in a PAF while we headed and grabbed some other caches in the area. With a further hint we returned and had another look, though the weather wasn't kind to us. Eventually fourbees put it all together and found the cache.
All very clever and will give it a favourite point![^]

Day 2 of Cache Hunting at NZ Mega 21012 with Gunnie69, Ghostgums, Mr Meccano, Ozibags and TheFourBees
Probably rate this as one of hardest finds of the weekend..
This one had us scratching around hither & yon for quite a while
Even had to resort to PAF+1 ie call the CO for a hint...
Even that didn't really speed things up but on our second attempt at this (both times in drizzle & cold Fourbees eventually found Allium Cepa
Log was signed and we headed out.
Cunning devious & tricky - But Good - Worth a favourite

Oh boy, this one was a test of patience... The puzzle was worked out back in Australia and the group headed to GZ to seek some onions... Can't be that hard can it... [?]
On arrival, the weather was not pleasant at all and what we found at GZ was just a little bit nasty... It took a while to work out what was going on and even when we had fathomed it, we were still missing a key ingredient. Hmm, what is going on...
The team hunted for a good 30 minutes in inclement weather, before flicking a message to the CO asking for help... Return message was no clearer so we headed off in frustration... Later that afternoon after we had calmed a little, we returned and had another scout around. After revisiting the previous spots and confirming we had not missed anything, TheFourBees found an onion... HEY, HERE IT IS...
Once located, everything fell into place and we incised the onion to get out hands on the log book... A sticker added, some suture work on said vegetable, we returned everything back to rightful spot and moved on. I should add that there were still many mutters in the CO general direction... That was nasty, you here me, just nasty... But we liked it...
Found with fellow Queensland hunters Kaisho53, OziBags, TheFourBees, Ghostgums and Mr Meccano.
Cheers daywalk.

At last!
I had tried a few different recipes over a period of time and even today I was about to slink away with my tail between my legs when wet (again) and cold I had the ah ha moment and after completing a quick victory dance retreated to my ute to sign the log in the dry. Two things nearly made my eyes water this morning and neither was an onion!.
After all the time I had slaved in the kitchen it appeared it was only an appetiser as my heart sunk when I saw the next step of the recipe, then a Police Car pulled over and fearing I would be told to move on I put on a brave face and had a chat, turns out they were chasing an individual in the area it certainly wasn't a poor kitchen hand like myself!.
Once he had moved up the hill I quickly returned everthing to the kitchen and beat a hasty retreat lest he come back for seconds.
What a great start to a magic weekend!
Thanks very much - so clever

When the next hail storm passed, Banian and I started on this cache. I thought it ws very clever, well planned out and a fun experience. TFTC gets a Favourite from me
In town for the Mega, Mrs banian had worked this out before we came down so all we had to do was find the hidden cache. Well it wasn't just the puzzle that was multi layered.... we enjoyed solving and (finally) finding this cache, thank you for the effort put into this cache. Signed and returned as we found.
My culinary skills at onion cookin'
I learnt from ninja knife school
Master chefs can chop without lookin' [|)]
So's not to look like a teary eyed fool ! [B)]
All you need is one sharp blade
Else a stinging mushy mess is made.
Peeled easily thru layers of the puzzle [^]
Was deep in pea soup fog when muggled!
Extra kitchen hand always welcome [^]
To join this Opoho kitchen fun
Else we'd be in a stronger pickle
As the pantry door was so fickle!
When well greased, the door unjammed
So grabbed core ingredients before it slammed!
Now truly qualified for Final in this Master Class
We tidied up the kitchen & left real fast !

We solved the puzzle before heading down for the MEGA so we just had to go find this one. Got to GZ and hmmm, this is not what we're used to, so we washed our hands, donned our aprons and starting gathering all the ingredients that looked like we needed. We got interrupted by a local, asking if we were gathering water cress, I decided it was easier to say we were geocaching rather than hunting for an onion! So after a brief explanation, she drove off shaking her head.
So back to our onion hunt we went. Another car went by, backed up and parked and out popped 2 more cachers. After a quick intro, we kept searching for the elusive onion while stretcho and nightowl searched around gathering all the ingredients as well, while I stood in the middle of the kitchen muttering " where are you onion?" I soon spotted something odd and investigated further, which revealed something even more sinister looking! I gave it a poke with my stick and it moved!!! Yikes, well Butchie Bum was the bravest and she put her hand in and ..... pulled out the onion! Yippee we've found it! Oh the joy was short lived as we then had to work out how the slice the onion. After many attempts we finally got the onion sliced with no blood spilt.
Thanks for such a cool puzzle and for the meeting of a great couple who became great caching friends!!!! A fav point from us!!

Wow , interesting pantry indeed. Set about finding all the ingredients. Was interrupted by local muggle as had seen others sorting there pantry too. ( strange people ) when the coast was clear , back to it only to have another car of two great cachers pull up. After a nice meeting they also joined in with us for such a good pantry clear out. Oh onion, onion just where can you be?. Nic minute Rednuam6 spotted something. yES there it was at last. Now another challenge to peel this onion. With the tool got it sorted..signed log with our new life time friend Stretch0 & Niteowinz. Replaced smiling after such a fab hands on mystery puzzle. Thankyou for such great fun and two wonderful friends we've meet.
Stretch0 and I had a wee bit of an argument up the hill lol but as we went past GZ saw some activity that told us there were other cachers out and about - went an introduced ourselves - whilst we had found the kitchen co-ords we had not read further about finding the ingredients - found a few of the clues but jean and Sue and Jaxson had already found those we all hunted for awhile then an aha moment meant that Jean laid her hands on the prize - Well Done !!! then with a combined effort we succeded in peeling the onion !!!! had our turn at signing the log then decided we would do some combined Mystery caching at the top of the hill - which turned into a brilliant day ( then days of fun with our new caching friends) thank you so much for an interesting and challenging mystery puzzle a favourite from me and the bonus of new friends the icing on the top Thanks for the cache
Wow what a time even working this one out before we left home now was the time to claim our prize of a smiley . On the way to Gz problems were had with trying to follow quick direction changes of GPS of roads which made the day warm up slightly . Upon seeing a collection of cachers at GZ we joined in on the hunt and we slowly were finding all the clues and we were zeroing in on the cache when Jean had an aha moment and spotted the hide !! WOW so sneaky but that was just the start of the next problem we now had to get further info to enter the cache. tried several combinations of numbers before the answer came to light and we got into sign our names . What a great puzzle followed by an excelent hide. A worthy cache deserving the favourite point Thanks for everything which included us making some new friends who we spent a fair amount of time caching with from here on
After dropping my son back at his hall of residence I thought had pushed the vegetables around my plate for long enough I would set out and finally, equipped with the necessary utensils, try to make a find today.
I arrived at what I hoped was ground zero and despite several false starts (very clever) I could not end my quest today.
Thanks for a lot of fun

I solved this one once ages and ages ago back, while I was working over summer. Drew out the crossword, and had absolutely no idea in the world where to start!! I kinda just experimented with different words that were plausible to be in it. I ended up finding a word way off in some corner that fit, unbelieving! So, I went and from there managed to do the whole thing!! Yay! Felt super awesome.
Then, with the puzzle solved, we managed to go out and make an attempt for it on the last time I was down for Christmas... which actually ended up in a really bad failure!! We thought we were onto it so many times! But not did we find it...
Then, this time when I was down, me and mum decided to get this for a special #800 mile stone of mine!!
We were at it, looking for ages and ages, but could not find it again!! We were actually looking in the right spot-ish this time, but there was like some pig skin or something around the GZ, which was gross!! And a bit off putting.
But we then soon had the cache then!! It was such a mission those last moments before holding it!! Yay!! We got it!!
A super neat cache!! Def earns a favourite!! And a good one to mark the 800 mile stone.
TFTC!!

What a great cache, from start to finish! Most of the solving credit goes to sonia26642, and as far as the actual cache goes, I have to admit that a few hints went a long way... I was certainly glad we had most of the suggested equipment just would add plastic bag for any possible scraps [B)] Thanks for another great way to spend some fun time, and for the cuppa and chat afterwards [^]
Solved as a part of MoM #12 - Varel.
Thank you for the riddle!

Solved the puzzle but did not find the onion, found some beer cans, assorted rubbish and a small plastic sign with a message relating to the elusive "Onion" I will be back for a better look.
Solved as part of MoM Varel. Thanks for this really nice riddle! Unfortunately we´ll never come to New Zealand to pick up the cache!

Solved the puzzle this morning and then found the cache this afternoon with some guidance from W.E.K.A.
Fun cache.
Thanks.
Fun cache.
Thanks.
Solved this one while at work before coming home for christmas... (Now I know how people who work 9-5 still have so much time to solve puzzles )
We got to the kitchen, and I think we found about 7 or so things that may have been pointing us in the right direction, however we couldn't find the cache!! It was probably especially since by this point it was dark...so impossible to see... and I was wearing jandals... not a good idea... but I mean I was still going for gold looking! Haha!
Cache is starting to look like a neat hide though! Despite us not finding it!
TFTH!!

I was hoping to do some cooking with sonia26642, but no luck locating the vital ingredient... will have to attempt earlier than just when it starts getting dark...
Although we almost missed this well hidden cache once again, we finally managed to find it, and also proved there is more than one way to peel an onion with a sharp knife. TFTC

CITOscar ran back to the Onion after the Centennial Monument CITO event, expecting WEKA to visit.
All ready to go again. Dropped off CITOscar. It sems an appropriate place for hime to visit, since everyone has done such a good job of cleaning up this area!
Some TLC needed. Will have it back in the vege cupboard in time for the NZ Mega Event! Spent a bit of time clearing the remaining brambles from the kitchen and discouraging regrowth of gorse.
Sorry Kev, the Onion was in place until late-afternoon Sunday 30th October and in good order (the maintenance problem is only that it was a bit easier to peel the Onion than it should be).

Recent CO note probably explains why I couldn't find it or maybe I'm still not destined to find it????
I'll be back...
I'll be back...
Well, after hunting high and low in the pantry yesterday, and daywalk's confirmation that it was there and yes, I was still blind, today was attempt #2. 5 minutes into the search and Tardis Chick had the Onion in hand. A quick rummage in the cutlery drawer for the knife to get through the first layer and log was in hand! Excellent cache indeed - TFTC!

While some might spend an hour and find 5 or 10, Tardis Chick & I spent an hour just on the one DNF today. Puzzle solved a month or so ago. Wandered around the kitchen, found the Cutlery in the drawer, as well as the tinned Piscine Rouge, but the Onion itself proved elusive. This'll take a return visit - soon.
Checked and reconstructed while passing. Someone had an easier time getting into the onion...
Solved puzzle early on but was puzzled on a previous visit. Had a think and a conversation. Still took a while to find - very very well hidden!
Neat cache, thanks.
Neat cache, thanks.
Had a brainwave several months back now but put off having another go until I had enough other errands in the vicinity (cache maintenance in fact) to warrant another trip up here. Brainwave confirmed, very satisfying to finally spy the onion. The tears have subsided and I can honestly call this one of my most liked (and frustrating!) caches.
@1620 This was a mission. Here I was having solved the puzzle at home and thinking that I should have bought some aborio rice, some white wine and some parmesan cheese to put with the Onion to make a yummy risotto. How wrong was I!!!!
The CO told me to get my thinking right, to get more lateral and left me to it. So five minutes after she departed I had the "Eureka" moment. Come to think of it I would have been able to put plenty of seafood in my risotto, "red herrings". This would have to be my all time favourite so cleverly put together, all that planning and plotting by the CO.
Thanks daywalk I am now a member of your fan club.

found the kitchen easy enough, and 5 clues plus the cutlery drawer. got a bit cold so will have to return for the onion. Did get a chance while looking round to realise that I had seen Whinney, so an easy find there on the way back down. We'll be back!
The Onion is back in place, waiting for the cooks. The cutlery drawer was lying about randomly, a metre away from where it should have been- please make sure you wedge it back exactly as you find it. One hint is missing at the moment, but it's not essential. Dropped off Wee Scottish Traveller, because every haggis needs a bit of onion in it.
Maintenance visit, found one top cross-threaded and the other loose so things are a trifle damp after the recent rain. Will replace once it's dried out.
Well we are pleased to be able to finally sign this one off. We were beginning to get to know the road up to the onion quite well, this being our 4th visit to the "Onion Patch". We must commend Daywalk for arranging for this little corner to be cleaned up so well (CITO). We have noticed the difference since our first visit as now the area is almost devoid of rubbish and rough grass etc. This cache has really been an enjoyable challenge and we trust that many others will pit their skills against Daywalk's well constructed cache puzzle and end point. We would assign more favourite points if we could (say one for each visit). TFTC
The CITO spinoff is a bit embarrassing actually, because when the cache was placed we thought we had cleaned up the area pretty thoroughly. We were proved wrong... as drawp says, well done to all those who left the kitchen tidier than they found it!
Just checking; all good. Although there should be no need to screw the container shut past hand tight- Mr Daywalk was needed to unscrew it!
Woohoo, finally found it! This wee onion certainly gave me plenty of tears, especially as upon finding it I realised I had previously disregarded it as an object of any interest. I even had my hand on it! The whole thing is so obvious now that I feel fairly foolish for not having picked it up sooner. Though in my defence I was adamant to others that it was not going to be there for various reasons.
A fantastic cache! Must admit to liking the intrigued and mystery in being unable to find it - it was a nice challenge. Very impressed by the amount of CITO in the area and am now pondering my own version to see if I can get another area cleaned up. This cache was also neat in the community aspect - I met quite a few cachers whilst there searching and the whole experience became a lot more social.
Thanks Daywalk, that was fun! (Despite the tears)

TFTC. Soooooo........Kept my eye on this one for a while.
A quick find after eleminating the obvious spots.
Do not know what was the fuzz about not finding it. [B)] If you read the page properly you do not need the hints.
Thank you for the outing to find this one!!
Reading by the logs this spot must have been used as a dump by the locals??
It looks nicly cleaned up now.[^]
Had a chat with the locals up the road and answered their questions about why there is allways cars, people and torches in the ditch.
SLB. - Coin to move on.

Upgraded the onion with some more expensive (and hopefully less breakable) equipment. A bit snug, but please ensure everything is replaced as you find it.
A finder recommends wearing heavy gloves as you search the area- some slivers of glass and metal shards have been spotted.

Yay, 2TF. A return visit was all it took. Started looking in a place I hadn't thoroughly explored the other day, and came up with the goods.
Thought I was stymied at the first layer, having weak wrists, but managed it after a while.
Then the second layer almost made me abandon the onion in disgust! - a man had obviously done this up- so I was able to enlist the aid of a passing young male cyclist to assist me. He never even asked me a question about it- amazing!
I had already been muggled by a young man who had obviously observed many cars here over the last week, I told him it was geocaching- he then didn't seem to be interested enough to want to know more.
TFTC a terrific experience and a great hunt. Loads of fun.
