Our local guide took us to this historic spot and we made the climb to learn a bit and find another cache. Thanks Kiwi_Explorer.
What a very interesting place. I had no idea. Reading all info makes you appreciate how we accept speed now of communication as a given. TFTC.
Visiting from Washington state in the US. Cable Bay is beautiful. Thanks for this great placement.
Found with Leon0112. Thank you for placing this multi so we could learn about the history of the area.
After two days totally windy and clouds near the ground today it was sunny and warm. Solve the question and found the final together with Laira007, before we climb up the hill, where we had a nice view. TFTC.
Visited Cable Bay today and could easily answer the questions and find the Cache.
Thank you very much for the Cache and greetings from Germany .

After a slight change in plans and directions we ended up in cable bay with friends. Had a bit of a look but located it just as the three two year olds started to lose interest. Tftc
Questions were not very easy but doable. Final location looked promising: quite close and a bit off track. And after a little while: yes, got it! Tftc!
What a lovely place.
We flew in from Auckland today with no plans whatsoever and just started driving down the coast, ultimately ending up at Cable Bay.
After a bite to eat and a walk along the beach we headed up to look for this multi.
A muggle was reading the signboard for a very long time and we wondered if he was also a geocacher but it turned out he was just really interested in the history.
Once we had the coordinates we headed off to the final and after a bit of fossicking we had the cache in hand.
The cows nearby were making quite a racket and seemed to be communicating with their friends over the other side of the water
Awesome multi. Thanks Kiwi_Explorer

On our way to Picton we came on this nice place.
The answers were easy to find. The box was well hidden and we had to search longer as we expected. But finally we found the cache.

This is Day 20 if our 12 day trip around Nelson-Tasman & the first day we have seen the sun. Day Two was overcast, but dry & every ither day has been constant, & mostly heavy, rain. Needless to say there hasn't been much caching action. With itchy feet & a perfect day to get out at last I headed straight here after checking in at the nearby motorcamp. Although the bay was stunning, the water was too cold to distract me & I was soon at the GZ. A few minutes later I had the cache in hand & already the cloud is returning. I have added a decent sized RITR log to the cache as there was only one space left after my scribble. This will hopefully keep the cache going over summer. TFTC out here. A Fav point for location alone.
In the South Island from Tauranga on a six week holiday and now following the PWGT. I have now completed the Geo tour and now have time to grab a few others on our travels. Camping nearby and decided to come up here. Stunning day. All good here.
I am logging using the Cachly app template so please excuse generic logging along the way. It’s just my way of keeping track, but I do genuinely thank each and every one of you cache owners for taking the time and energy to place these caches. Many Thanks for bringing me here. Cheers.

Tried for this one ages ago without success. Not sure where went wrong. Some yoga mat carrying muggles went past up the hill while resolving this time. But could search without issues. Tftc

The first of the day, and the numbers were quickly found with only one guess (it seemed logical), and we made a quick walk to the cache. Found quickly, we enjoyed the views, acquainted ourselves with some cows, and we were off again. TFTC KE.
Today our plan was to drive to Glenduan, park a car (mine as it happens), then drive to Cable Bay in RG’s car and walk the track back to Glenduan and then go pick up my car.
We decided to do the walk in that direction as I knew there was a multi at Cable Bay, and was not sure how much backtracking we would need to do if we did it the other way. So a simple plan, and off we go.
The slog up really affected us today from the get-go - for some reason we were both a bit flat. But progress was being made and all looked rosy until we got to the first hill summit and I made a startling revelation. My car keys are back in RG’s car. A quick powwow then, options were tabled, and in the end we settled on getting the 4 caches I had not found on this walk then heading back to Cable Bay. A sensible solution, but a bit more walking as we would do somewhere between two-thirds to three-quarters of it before turning back. Still, we were not the only people walking to the lookout over Glenduan then turning back today.
So all caches found, and glad to tick this one off. Also got a good look of the ‘lay of the land’ with regard to those along the beach, and the kayak ones around here. Thanks all COs.

Solved before walking up the hill to the summit. A very well protected log: plastic bag; another bag; container; small rock; medium rock; under large rock. Must be persistant wekas here
Found tonight after tea and the day had cooled down sorted the answers for this quickly then off to the final cache soon in hand.

Must be nearly a year ago since I solved this, as I came here in December 2019.
Couldn't look for it then but today it was the second cache I found before I head back to the water.

#8499. I flew over to Nelson today as I am off on a work trip on Monday. A friend of mine lives in Frosty Road in Hira so she decided to spend a few hours with me geocaching today. The rain arrived when attempting the previous cache. My shorts got soaked. But just as we were about to give up on walking up the hill, the rain eased so we raced up to the information board. Gathered the information and corrected the coordinates. Then wandered off to GZ. Good accurate coordinates as found the cache in the first place checked. Signed the logbook and replaced everything as found. Thanks Kiwi_Explorer for the cache. Nice views of Cable Bay from this spot. Lucky last as weather is looking ugly out at sea. Time to go back and watch the rugby.
Great area to visit! We have previously looked at the history with daughter, and good to find the cache today finally! TFTC!!
Arrived at the campsite yesterday and took a quick stroll up to the lookout before tea. There must be a cache here I said to Mr 6 but it wasn't until I connected to the WiFi I figured out it was a multi. This morning I persuaded the boys to climb the hill again and have a proper look. We son solved the co-ordinates and headed off. MrB had his cache sense switched on and had grabbed it before the GPS had even settled. Tftc
We came out to Cable Bay on a bit of a mission and what a stunning day to be here. Wandered up the hill to complete the numbers we needed for the co-ords and not long after I made a find in the first place I looked. Nice piece of history here and in the late 19th century this technology would have been revolutionary. Thanks Kiwi_Explorer for the history lesson and for the hide.
Dropped Andy off at Glenduan to walk the Cable Bay walkway then drove around to Cable Bay to wait for him. Was surprised at how many people were here and didn't think I would be able to find a park at first. Drove down to Pepin Island end of causeway and a vehicle was just pulling out of a park so I quickly grabbed it. Had some lunch then headed off to the end of the track to wait for Andy in the only bit of shade around. Luckily for me it was the information board required for this cache. Unluckily a family was having lunch there. I sat on the nearby seat - in the sun - and this must have hurried them on as they packed up and left. I shifted over to the shade and quickly found the required answers. Loaded them into my phone and then waited for some muggles to get far enough ahead of me before I left the shade to begin my hunt. There was a herd of cows camped out on the track and as I slowly made my way around them my phone clicked down to 2m from the cache. I spotted a telltale sign but a family of muggles turned up so I sat and enjoyed the sun and told the kids that no they couldn't pat the cows. At least their parents kept them away. Anyway once they left I had a better search and came up with the cache all safe and sound. i had just returned the cache when I spotted Andy coming down the track so it was good timing. tftc
Today we are traveling from Havelock to Nelson. Our idea was to visit the cable bay and may be some cache. This one was very interesting. We had a nice view at the GZ. Thanks for the cache!
Found this on a nice evening stroll, staying at the holiday park. Nice view and interesting story.TFTC!
Popped out to Cable Bay this morning and after no mistakes had cache in hand. Amazing views with a few kayakers battling the wind below. Thanks for the cache.
First time walking from this end of the track ,done it from the Glen end before , got the co-ords sorted after the 2nd attempt. nice views. Worth a favorite from us.TFTC
This was my first ever find. I was overwhelmed with excitement, can’t wait to find more.
A quick walk up the track with TregearP and learnt a bit more about this location - we'd also picked up some of the information from a nearby cache location which also has a board and plaque.
Information in hand and soon found a cache .
All in good order, signed log and replaced as found.

A lovely view from the information house but with information gathered it was off to look for the final. Located a likely spot, logged and off to unload kayaks. TFTC
Can't believe I found this one. I don't normally do multi's, I had the family with me, and they barely have patience for the traditional caches, so I thought I would come back later on with pen and paper, on my own. I just thought I would check the hint and look in some likely places near by while I'm here. In the second place I looked- I struck gold!!! What luck! TFTC.
Finally made it back for a retry. My record keeping let me down so we had to work out the coordinates again. - - - I discovered I remembered some of the answers, in fact coming up with coordinates seems to be getting easier each time . The search was super-quick too. Then a few pictures and back down to sea level.
I must say it's a super place for a drive - - - DNFs have their advantages.

The questions were answered quickly. Thanks for an interesting bit of history. Germany
An interesting bit of reading at the information board. I had no problems getting the required information and enjoyed the short walk to the final location where I made a quick find and enjoyed the views.
Thanks very much for the cache.

Preparing for a trip to Nelson and planning to go to the 2002 Cable Climb- spotted this intriguing cache title.

*Prior to the establishment of the Wakapuaka Cable Station Cable Bay was known as Schroder's Mistake and such a name immediately suggests that there must be a story behind it. There is. When survey parties set out for the Wairau (Marlborough) in April 1843 they sailed in two boats which struck heavy gales. Taking obvious precautions they sought the shelter of Pepin Island, one boat going into the Maori Pa side while the other ran into the bay later known as Cable Bay. Schroder, a merchant of Nelson, was the owner of the larger craft. Some difference of opinion developed over the lifting of the anchor and the surveyor, J. W. Barnicoat, suggested that the boat could be lifted over the sand bar. Schroder gave up the job and all the surveyors proceeded by Cotterell's cutter to the Wairau.*
Discovered later that the CO has that surname - is he a descendant I wonder?
Managed to solve most of the questions at home. The CO very kindly okayed it (apart from one number which is obvious once you read the sign) and checked the cache. So today was the day! We read the sign with interest - the improvement in communication was just so fast - sailing ships, then steamships like the [Victory](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC6T9JM_drink-driving-victory-1861-otago-peninsula?guid=d4646ce2-48a3-4d9f-b4f0-dc0ad7e93794) doing the government mail contract, then in 1864 via train over Panama it took 60 days to London, then from 187X telegrams! Then a walk to the final and straightforward find with a view.
Thanks for the history, the cache and a big thumbs up for your helpfulness Kiwi Explorer

I arrived nice and early this morning - quickly had the numbers sorted and off to find the cache - nice easy find. Then I stayed there and just absorbed the view and the peace, what a wonderful experience to feel as though I was the only person around on such a stunning sunny morning tftc - a fav from me
It has been quite some time since we placed this so after the recent DNF it seemed sensible to check on it. I could be mistaken but I think it used to be under an old log near the fence. No sign of any such log or the cache so I placed a new container in a slightly different and probably better spot not far away. It will be more visible to muggles there but you also get a view. Let's see how it goes. Cache page updated slightly to adjust the numbers.
This is getting very very embarrassing - - - especially having read Nickippy's log . No no please don't go and check, I'm sure there is a logical explanation .
Darn, did it again....! It is almost 21 months to the day that we climbed up the hill and unsuccessfully searched for this one. Today we rechecked the board, checked our new coordinates were the same and went off sure that this time we would be successful. It took an hour before I would give up and concede defeat. . At least the weather was great as was the scenery, so thanks for bringing us here, but, as I said, "darn". So frustrating.
Unfortunately it's the same here like on other places...the landowners make the rules...
Found it by pure curiosity. I didn't have any service on my phone when I thought "this looks like a place where there should be geocaches, I wonder if there are any nearby." I was with my kids and family at cable bay but as we're got there I started to look around at potential Geocaching spot. On casually looking at what might be spots where I would hide a cache, I spotted this one. When I got home I quickly looked up which one this could have been, this one seemed to be the closest, I guess I found it with out having to do all the hard work. It was my first cache Ive ever found without anything help, GPS, clue, or even hint that a geocache might even be in cable bay.
Despite my damaged ankle I was determined to find this so went up to gather the info only to find more uphill work required. Having got this far I decided to try to get to GO where the spot-on chords gave me the final hiding place. The log is slightly damp but still usable so I signed and returned it to its home. TFTC and forcing me to climb up here at the view is stupendous!!!
Checked the answers twice but didn't spot the cache. Probably my "mistake" haha.
No reception but geocache compass still works. Nice and easy for all ages, thank you!
[#90] Today we are hiking along the coast line hills. On the way we will log some caches. This is the first one.

While exploring around Nelson today we wanted to come out here to see the area. Picked out a couple of caches to do and this was one of them. Thanks for bringing us here to this historical location. We enjoyed it very much Kiwi Explorer. The weather wasn't overly bright today but at least it was dry while we were here. Found the well hidden cache after a short walk and signed the log. Cheers [^][^]
This was the second day of a fifteen day trek going down to the South Island and hitting the Christchurch Mega. I am staying at the Cable Bay Holiday Park, so I got this one. I spent some time making sure I got all the right info, then went off to GZ. I didn't find it right away, so I went back and triple checked my numbers. They were right so back to GZ and then I finally found the cache. TFTC.
No mistakes for me today. I made the effort to come here today to pick off a few caches that always seem too far off the main road to quickly pop along to attempt.
Had I more time I would have pressed on to the top of the hill but instead made do with stopping at the WP to get the numbers which suggested the cache was no too far away.
The coords were spot on and I soon spotted the likely hiding place.
On the way back, the name of the cache got me thinking: the cartographers - or whomever was responsible for naming newly discovered bays back in the day were quite harsh. They'd never get away with calling Cable Bay 'Schroders Mistake' nowadays; it would be something far more PC, like 'Schroders Good Effort', 'Schroders Tried Hard', or 'Schroders Learning Experience'.
How times change.
Anyway. I digress. Thanks for the cache and all.

This was a quick solve and find after a very challenging scramble around Pepin Island to find another cache. TFTM
mrs capperz, and nightowl19's holiday on the South Island is over which means a run to the airport at Nelson to get them home. We spent a pleasant morning in and around Nelson doing some of the sights; Cathedral, Tahuna beach, views from up above the beach and it was another great day weather-wise too. All good things must come to an end though and once they were safely up in the air and away I turned on the G P S and had a little look-see for a few before all the daylight deserted me.
Always a winner in my book; Multi cache, end of road, views, info, good hide at final = F P, make sense to me

Great little multi cache - all the info was readily available and a short walk later and the cache was ours. Tftc and Happy Valentine's Day! ♡♡♡
Great Multi here in beautiful Cable Bay !!!! View was the Best & even better as this was our 500th cache.woo hoo !!!!!
Our second cache on our Cable Bay excursion. A nice wee climb and some interesting plaques and history on the way. A wee search and then success. Watch the barbed wire. TFTC
Almost unbelievable: the information about the speed of the messages in those days... We were much faster with the searching and finding of the cache.. Thanks. Regards, paroja from the Netherlands.

#8516. I wonder how many bays called XYZ's Mistake there are in NZ. Being from CHC I was familiar with Taylors Mistake. After a bit of research, I also discovered Chaslands Mistake, Logans Mistake, Murrays Mistake and Sinbads Mistake (not to mention various land-based Mistakes). Anyway, we made no mistake with the multi, and Troodles found the cache in the lush undergrowth. TFTC.
Is Captain Schröder, any relation Mr KE? If so, history shouldn't repeat with these new-fangled devices called GPSrs.
A straight forward multi with an interesting signboard to read. GPSr took me straight to GZ, where the very well concealed cache (mother nature having a hand in that after nearly 9 months since the cache was last found) was finally found after several jabs with the walking pole. Thanks for an interesting multi in a great location.

There was some random discussion about this cache recently so when I checked for nearby caches today I suddenly discovered this is where it is. - - - Unfortunately, for some completely inexplicable reason we didn't find its EXACT location. - - - Beginning to think I should take up a new hobby like croquet
Found with NanaKris before packing up our tents and heading home after an awesome couple of days camping with the kids.
Easily found on a day out caching in the region with Waiiti20. Mr EU didn't have this cache on his GPS, so instructions gained from Waiiti20. However, Mr EU managed to turn up the cache and had signed ready to rehide when Waiiti20 turned up - still looking...! We note it hasn't been found for quite some time. TFTC
Completed with Emvy_us while out on a road trip. Some very interesting history out here as well as national significance at a wonderful location, TFTC, #6118
To cut a long story short - came out here today to do this cache and the walk round Pepin Island. Pleased to have finally completed this cache before yet another lambing season but Pepin Island is still waiting for a visit some other year. I enjoyed reading all the history again and my visit that brought back a lot of special memories with the boys. TFTC #4814
A bit of a Mish finding this one at midnight with nzlats. Was good fun, but original spot has been destroyed a tad. Interesting read too! TFTC =)
A bit of a midnight wander for this one, did have to double check my workings, the hiding place was somewhat destroyed by animals, so moved cache about a foot, TFTC
Last time we were out here the track was closed for lambing so a return trip today was decided. Information was soon obtained and then the short walk to the final. The cache was clearly visible from several metres away, it's hiding place having been knocked aside. After signing we re hid it then wedged the hide with a stone to hopefully stop it moving again in the near future but age and nature are taking charge here. TFTC.
Our first visit to Cable Bay today was needed to finish off Princess Moonlight multi & test run a new sea kayak. Hell while we are here it made sense to find another nearby cache. Quick find and great views...though a bit windy today. TFTC
Opps what a pile of mistakes!! Firstly I made the mistake of not logging this until today 27.12.2012. But the original mistake was turning up to the xmas tree farm just down the road, half an hour before it opened. Then we mistakenly forgot to ask master Beanso if he "needed to go" before we got near the GZ! But finally we got there and no mistaking the co-ords, except someone was standing right on top of the cache holding the GPSr saying "It must be right here, if I'm not mistaken!!" . No damage done, all good!!

Sneaked this find in while on a lunch-break at a nearby job. Certainly, an interesting history. TFTC.
Two people were on the walkway further up the hill but we were not about to follow them.
Must admit to feeling a bit guilty logging this one as the track was in fact closed for lambing but I figured if I was nice and quiet and avoided disturbing any mummy sheep I wouldn't do any harm. Everyone seemed happy when I left them and no signs of any stress (probably more with me). Lots of great information reveled here. TFTC NB just one to go to get my 250 - who's will it be?
I've been here so many times but this is the first time I've stopped to read the board. Thanks. Easy find
An interesting and enjoyable multi, rather amazing how telegrams were relayed from country to country way back when.

A fascinating tale - I wonder how many 'Mistakes' there are round the country - I know of 'Taylor's Mistake' out of Christchurch on the peninusla. Anyway, another interesting place and thank you for bringing us here. TFTC.
My first Multicache in New Zealand!!! I stood overnight on the nice and quite campground nearby. The road was open! Thank you very much for showing me Cable Bay, this important place for NZL in our times. Logged on 10/03/2012 09:20h. TFTC
The road to Schroders Mistake is currently closed due to last weeks floods/slips.
Out for a paddle, so try and come to terms with a Schoder mistake.......nah...
Did not know that part of the history of the place. Thanks for neat wee multi. Ewe watched me sign with her fat babies along side, not a worry in the world. Did not have the heart to mention "lamb chops".
