#4940 - 13:30; Our week in New York was drawing to a close and we had checked off most of the sights we had on the 'to do' list for this trip. Going Coastal’s NY-NJ Harbor Estuary EarthCache Discovery Trail in Liberty State Park in New Jersey was on the 'to do if you can get there' list on the recommendation of a caching mate back in Australia who had been here before. I was happy that I was able to make it over the river to walk the trail, although the temperature in excess of 90 degrees F made for a hot one. This was the tenth, but not quite last, stop on the trail. The nearby BBQ area looked well used, but the heat was keeping people away today, along with work of course. Gathered the required information and email sent to the CO for the OK. TFTC Going Coastal
An interesting story and one I had never read about.....as for the earthcache, the required info was gathered and my e-mail has been sent.
Thanks for another one in the series....
Thanks for another one in the series....
We visited Ground zero and took ferry. We parked beside Liberty park and we walked in the Park. It was very hot but so beautiful to see another side of the Liberty Island and around. We didn't know this history and are now aware of. Thanks!
now thats the history i like. so much man made destruction makes me mad, yet i feel informed. hopefully this will revitalize and be close to what it once was.
thanks for the series.
thanks for the series.
Suddenly the peace of this series is shattered. Up until now it has been peaceful and relaxing, beautiful and impressive. Then BANG. Humans. We really do do our best to destroy everything we come across. So there are large numbers of people having BBQs, music from a number of different sources blaring out, and rubbish, litter everywhere. It's no surprise to see a rat diving into the rocks (well, either a rat or a VERY big mouse!, didn't see more than a movement from the corner of my eyes and then the tail disappearing in the cracks).
The question at this cache is about stewardship, as I watch a bunch of kids picking up rocks and stones and throwing them into the water I can't help but think that there is little stewardship. This si sad. The destruction by Hurricane Sandy was terrible, but it was natural, what I see here now is mindless. There is a massive difference. And nature recovers better from natural damage than it ever does from human.
Maybe a good thing from this particular cache on the series is that it will make people reflect on the difference and maybe, just maybe, think about stewardship for the future (although, if you are doing this series then you are a geocacer and I am probably preaching to the converted).
Sorry, bit of a tirade, I will now get off my high horse.

See my log for Liberty Enlightening (GC2T1KZ) for a discussion of my approach to this series.
This was the 10th and final Earthcache of the day for me. But my mom and I have enjoyed every step of it. There were several bus loads of kids in the area when I arrived at the coordinates. I gather up the required information, and we made our way back to the car. Thanks to Going Coastal for this awesome Earthcache series!
Popular place to fish. Nice park to spend a little time after a day at the office.
We really enjoyed the walk along the Waterfron Walkway. This was our first visit to New York. Sometimes it was a bit hard for us to figure out the answers, because English is not our native language, but I hope that we are allowed to log the caches anyways (answers have been sent).

We found this earth cache on our way into the City. I had never stopped here before. The view of the Statue of Liberty from here is WONDERFUL, I am so glad we stopped, thanks for showing us...TFTC
Got up early to visit and observe the site, I hope I got the correct answers for this earthcache. First of a few this morning, I discover a beautiful place very close to where I camped at the end of Marin street in Jersey City.
The area is very welcoming to the whole family. It has BBQ, playgrounds for kids, nice grass areas and also some shade. All that's needed for a great picnic.
You could also decide to do other things like taking a nap in the shade or fishing, it's up to you. Enjoy the place.
Thank you Going Coastal for making me discover Black Tom Island and some of it's history.

On my way to Cape May, NJ from NH to visit the folks, for Dad's 81st and mothers day! Was able to score this find on the way down! Will send the answers over the next day. One at a time. The devestation of sandy certainly has influenced the area. I spoke with several park rangers and they are not sure when things will fullyreopen! Thanks for bringing me here! TFTC, ponil
