Well this one was a bit of an adventure and very good fun. After a bit of bush bashing I managed to get myself in the right spot and soon managed to track down the cache. Thanks very much for the cache.
Unfortunately didn't read GSELs comments until getting back to the ranch so searched around in vain in the wrong place it seems. Never mind
#12,010. Well today was one of mixed fortunes. The weather forecast was great with clear skies and light winds forecast. Been meaning to do the remaining caches on this circuit for ages and today seemed a good opportunity. Plan originally was to go anticlockwise up to the tops and pick up the remaining caches then return by the same route as I remembered the track going clockwise had a very steep section in the lower part. But best laid plans came unstuck on the top. A woman was camping in a tent near the summit with two highly aggressive dogs. They charged out of her tent and attacked me, biting me hard on the leg. I staggered off to bandage up the wounds. I had one more cache to get and did not want to go past her out of control dogs again so carried on with an injured leg all the way around the loop. Ended up being a 10 hour hike as I made my way gingerly off the mountain with blood leaking from the puncture wounds. Then a trip to A&E to get it cleaned up once back at home.
Working my way along the tops. Saw the aerial and found a path to the weather station installation. My GPS took me down to the lower building. The hint was specific. I crawled and bashed my way into a dense leatherwood thicket to reach a stump. Took a lot of effort to search every nook and cranny. Nothing. Came out demoralised. Read some past logs and saw one indicating the coordinates were out by quite a bit. Went back to the other installation and followed the guy line and saw a stump. A short search around it and I spied a flash of blue and thankfully it was the cache tucked away in an alcove. Signed the logbook and replaced as found. So yes its the top installation not the lower one to save any more damage to the subalpine plants. Thanks Tramper Ted for hiding it up here.

Found all but 2 on the circuit . Great overnight trip with fine weather. Most need logs replace with waterproof ..maybe for the next visitor.
Thanks

What these rugged caches lack that the more pedestrian bush ones is a well-formed geotrail so some uncomfortable shoulder charging was employed to get to GZ. Took a moment to survey the tech on display before the hint guided me right to the cache. Another shoulder charge later and back onto the track, the summit nearly in sight. TFTC
Found as a part of a previous group TanjackMüley, now WanderingSparrow. Now I'm continuing on my own. TFTC
Like previous cachers said very overgrown. Once we found the right tree we found the cache fast.
Thanks for the cache and the full log at start of the trail.
Thanks for the cache and the full log at start of the trail.
Thanks TramperTed for placing this cache.
The last 10m to the cache is fairly overgrown but cache is in good condition complete with treasure, pencil and sharpener.

Today was a planned meet up between Gr33nslime, Stardust718 and myself in order to have a crack at doing the Kapakapanui track loop walk. So depending on the size of the logsheet found, we generally signed ourselves as either Team G.S.T or else simply G.S.T.
We knew today would be a challenge physically, although as a team we cracked Mt Egmont 5 weeks ago so we were pretty confident of being to do this loop, although my knees were certainly feeling it on the descent! The thing that really surprised me was just how many of these caches were in a sorry state with waterlogged logsheets etc. Luckily my 2 compadres were tooled up with spare sheets and new baggies so we were able to replace all the dud ones we found.
This one had us flummoxed for a little while. This may have been partly due to the co-ordinates initially taking us to a place a little way from where we eventually found the cache. It was hard to get accurate GPS readings today, what with the rolling mist etc, but my GPS reading was 17m away. But once found, there was nothing wrong with this cache so it was simply signed and we were back on our way again. Thank you for placing it and helping to give us a reason to make this trip.

# 1390 Team GST (Gr33nslime, Stardust 718 and TwigNZ) joined forces today to take on the Kapakapanui loop track. The date was set ages ago and we were hoping for good weather, which we got - today was not to be a drizzly walk in the Tararuas for once!
It was a long day out, car to car was 8 hours. We did a lot of cache maintenance along the way, replacing both logs and bags and it was unfortunate to see that even double containers plus plastic bags dont stop the insidious ingress of water. We managed to find all but two of the loop today so was a good haul and it is the highest total of caches i have gotten in one day. A good range of cache containers and d/t ratings too to boost my average terrain rating atleast.
All and all a good day out was had on a very well maintained track (but steep track), thanks DOC... in the back of our minds was the tragedgy that happened only yesterday, my thoughts are with those who have been affected by the events in Christchurch.. we stand with you

Once again Team GST (Gr33nslime, stardust718 and TwigNZ) got together for a day hiking. This time it was in the Tararua Ranges to takle the Kapakapanui Loop Track. Having climbed Mt Egmont together 5 weeks ago we didn't think this track would cause too many problems. We work well together and it woudl appear we have adquate fitness for a full days walk.
We knew there was a decent climb involved of around 1000m though so some preparation was done with training walks and we made sure to pack plenty of food, water and clothing to accomodate the quickly changing weather conditions up here. We had cloud, mist and brilliant sunshine thoughout the day. Unfortunatley it was so clouded over when we got to the trig that there was no view.
Thanks to the various cache owners who have so many caches on this track that it became a target for us to complete. We did a lot of cache maintenance on our walk as abuot half the log sheets were too wet to write on. Fortunately Team GST were prepared with spare log paper and plastic bags.

nice easy find with youngest son (8 years old) on our way up to the summit, we did the loop clockwise, we had a great labour weekend trip, TFTC
Myself, my partner and our dog picked a couple of days where the weather looked decent to tackle this loop! Was a challenging walk up to the hut but amazing surroundings. Tried to grab as many caches as I could without slowing us down too much so only allowed a minute looking for each one. Missed about 5 on the whole loop. Cache's and hut were both in good condition!
Enjoyed finding this one, TFTC

Apologies to the cache owner for delay in completing the log.
I completed the Kapakapanui Loop Track on Wellington Anniversary Day - overcast and hot weather. Found all but three caches on the loop.
Thanks to the various cache owners for placing caches on this beautiful, though steep, track.

Thought this would be the trig.. but not yet! Interesting collection of buildings/implements nearby.
Quick find once I figured out what the hint meant.
Done the loop walk with LCBuilder and the dogs. A cool winters day but luckily no rain and mostly clear skies so got to enjoy the views from the top. A very slow steep walk up, loved the gentle gradients of the ridge line and then a quick scurry down the other side made for a tough, long but enjoyable 7.5 hour long walk. The different sceneries were interesting and the dogs had a blast thanks for the caches!

Went on an adventure with Wafflekitties had a blast thanks for the memories! TFTC.
Took the kids (9 and 6) on an overnight tramp around the Kapakapanui Loop. What better way to occupy their minds than a spot of caching? And where better to do it than here - a fantastic walk, a great hut, and a wonderful series of caches. A good time had by all, despite the mud, thank you so much for bringing us to this magical place
My annual trip to the North Island, looking for a good hill to climb. This loop seemed to fit the bill, lots of caches and promises of great views. Go to the start at 12:30 and went around clockwise, back to the car at 6:15. Pretty steep up and then rather steep down. Unfortunately it was low overcast by the time I go to the top there were no views. Really enjoyed the walk all the same - thanks for the caches.
#2863 Lovely views up here - te Leprechaun enjoyed the walk and views. This cache earns a Favourite Point for bringing me here - thanks Tramper Ted.
Another find of what was to become 37 cache finds today during an enjoyable walk around the Kapakapanui Loop with Yeetrees, Boxhill and GoneFishing. Logsheet signed and paperwork and cache replaced before we headed off for the next cache.
The weather was perfect for today beginning with a cool start for much of the clockwise climb, including walking into some cloud at a couple of points. The cloud burned off by the time we wanted to get some views and we had the gentlest of breeze along the top before the long downhill haul.
In all, a great day out and even an opportunity to rinse the boots before coming home!

A cunning plan was hatched to complete the Kapakapanui Loop and a couple of other nearby caches. Two weeks out the weather looked perfect for today, and by some freak occurrence, it was actually a perfect, windless summmer day for the trip today.
A most enjoyable day out with Yeetrees, Boxhill and wb1116. We had a good few laughs on the way in a beautiful patch of bush, got some great views from the top, and found all the caches. Sounds like the perfect trip!
Some good views here, even though there a few wispy clouds drifiting across the ridge from time to time.
TFTC.

I teamed up with Yeetrees, wb1116 and gonefishing today to do the loop and to look for the recently placed caches.
It was great day out on a real tramping track. River crossings, lots of ups, and lots of downs, with plenty of mud thrown in for good measure. The weather came to the party as well with the summer day we’ve all been waiting for.
We found everything we came to find, and finished a little jaded, but happy after 9 hours of walking. What’s not too like? Cheers and TFTC

Good weather today so I decided to go for a day walk and ended up making a clean sweep of all the caches around the Kapakapanui Loop Track that I hadn't previously found - a satisfying total of 31 caches including one FTF. I had been eyeing this one for a long time but there weren't sufficient caches along the track to make it worth while coming all the way up here again. Now with the new series by Just-Looking and tmann421, all that has changed! This one was a quick find thanks to a good hint. All in good condition - signed log, TFTC
We picked this up while on a big ftf chase with 27 new caches on the track.
The weather turned to drizzly rain as we neared the car park & lasted the entire day, so we weren't able to enjoy any views any where along the track . Although it was very light drizzle on the ridge, but a fairly chilly wind.
The cache was a quick find thanks to a good clue.
We left a pet rock - a mouse.
Thanks for setting this cache up at such an awesome spot.

Checked the weather forecast during the week and made the decision to complete the Kapakapanui Loop Track today with tmann421. Started out in sunshine, but soon clouded over as we reached the top. A great day out collecting caches with tmann.
It was at this point I was regretting that extra helping of trifle on Christmas Day
A nice quick find here and great to take in the views. The log was wet and unable to sign so tmann put in a replacement log and we dried out the cache as best we could. Now for the downhill!

Good find with Just-Lookin on the loop walk.
Hint made for an easy find.
Log was totally soaked so we replaced it with a dry logsheet and new bag.

Great find on a nice loop walk. Cache all good and dry. TFTC. Unfortunately no views today, but a good leg stretch.
Did the loop track and stayed the night at Kapakapanui Hut, found quickly, TFTC.
Wonderful views to the East, but the West is shrouded in murk. Quickly found. Now time for lunch. Loved the warning on the nearby shed. TFTC.
Superb vistas indeed today - both towards the coast and also stunning views of the high Tararuas with just a dusting of new snow on the tops. Even a small dusting of snow on our track. Fourteen of us in the group, Thursday trampers from the Manawatu Tramping and Skiing Club. Fine conditions, but a bitterly cold southerly wind in exposed places had us putting on raincoats, hats and gloves on the higher parts of this tramp. I was with Tramper Ted when they placed this cache in 2011 - knew I would be back one day to claim the smiley and today was the day. Contents are in excellent condition. Thanks for placing this one, TT, a bonus on a good, and strenuous, day out.
Awesome walk on easterday. Nice hide. Gache in good and dry condition. Cloudy so only view was to the coast!
This was a good cache on a walk before dinner after we got to the hut. nice location but i have to wonder about what the thingee is. TFTC
Took my son up for a walk but tops in cloud, clear by the time we got back to the car! Found on 14/12/2013
Found and logged the cache while doing the Kapakapanui circuit on a sunny warm "winter"day! This cache was very well hidden! I put it back where I found it and hope the next one will find it as well! TFTC
Out for the day checking our caches. After the last log on this cache, we decided to have a look and to our surprise found both the caches! Have left the 'imprisoned' one in its hidey hole and taken the other one away. Cache in good condition.
I didn't even get a chance to look for this one as simpsonsrgr8 was to fast with the find. It was only after we walked away that we realised that it was probably the original which we signed. The vistas were well worth the effort today - thanks for showing them to me.
Out on a beautiful summer's day with simpsonsrgr8. We did the loop in a clockwise direction completing the circuit in 5 hours 20 including breaks. Not having been in here before I really enjopyed the walk and the scenery but I doubt that my knees would want me to return any time soon. TFTC

Found while completing the loop with Fozzmiester. We opted for the clockwise route and got around the full loop in 5:20, including our lunch break.
We quickly found the cache at GZ but it was well encased within its prison, it was visible through the bars but I couldn't see the door. It took a little digging to get it out. Once open I noticed that there were only two logs in the book, both from June 2011. Looking at the logs now I think we found the original container which was in good condition.
Great views up here today, with just a little haze in the distance

Found it! It took me longer than it should have. I blame the ascent for muddling my brain, making it difficult for me to figure out what the clue meant. After a while, my GPS took me to the right area but I still needed to nearly trip over the clue item before I twigged. Even then it took a few minutes despite the arrow pointing in the right direction and the clue being perfectly accurate.
This is my first time on this track. It's hard work for somebody who is not as fit as he once was but I am really enjoying the trek. TVMFTC.

Had a (very) quick look. Saw a very likely hiding spot, but no cache there. However, as I was walking with a slow group, and was concerned we were not going to get off the mountain before dark, I couldn't spend more than a couple of minutes looking. Never mind, the perfect excuse to come back to this lovely hill for another look in the future. Thanks
Visited today (couldn't see any vistas!). Had a look for the cache but nothing found. Very strange indeed. Anyway, replaced the cache where it should have been, so all good to go. There are two logs in the cache, one waterproof. BYO pen please.
Hmm, two DNFs. Its very close to the hint, not stuck deep in the bushes. Might have to take a trip up there in the near future.
After the trig headed to this intersting and place. Searched around quite long but even with hint couldnt find it. Sherlock Hood.
Woohoo! A first to find, with Chucky3. The forecast was for a fine day, and we left the car in sunshine, but unfortunately no vistas for us today - it had clouded in long before we reached the top. No rain though until we were back down below the junction, and all in all we had a nice winter's day walk. Thanks for the cache.
