I'm staying in St Arnaud for a few nights and today I hiked up to Mt Robert, taking the Pinchgut Track up, then following the Robert Ridge Route as far as the Mt Robert ski field, then returning down Paddy's Track. Is was a beautiful day for it and a most enjoyable walk. This was my turning point, I made a quick find of the cache at GZ, took in the amazing views, then started my return walk back to the car. FP for the views here! TFTC!

But with so much food, my backpack was quite heavy as well. But I made it and saw some amazong places and found a few caches as well.TFTC#602

In order to satisfy the requirements of a challenge cache, todays aim was elevation up to Angelus peak, and back, along with a couple of side trips, in a day. Yes, it is possible even at this time of the year, with one end being in darkness though, the oh dear it's early end. I walked 40 km over the 15 1/2 hours and gathered together 28 caches. With the previous days snow in the area, the wind from the South, across the top of the ridge, created enough wind chill to freeze my drinking tube and make some ice crystals in my spare water bottle. And, just enough that there were a handful of snowflakes further along. Then, at the other of the day, the Northerly wind was warm. This was a few short of my original plan of 33 to keep on the safer side of darkness at the end of the trip.

This was #7. Easy find here as I added a warmer layer and a windproof layer to keep that chilling wind at bay.

I’d originally planned for a couple of nights in the Lakes last weekend but the weather put paid to that ahead of time.

A lovely bright day today but the winds picked up. Time to get another layer out of my pack. Oh and look for this cache too.

Plenty of walking to go so I think I’ll leave the ski field Cache for next time.

Thanks bumandworker

Thanks & greetings from the Czechs!

So I made it up Pinch Gut track faster than I thought and ended up deciding to visit here. Its only 700 odd meters away and its a nice day with light winds. So came here for a quick find. Cheers
Its now just past 10am and down there a couple of hundred meters is Mt Robert Ski Field. There are only a few patches of snow left so lets go down and explore.

Zara and I are off for some much needed tree time, with Lake Rotoiti on my agenda for today. Spent a fabulous time Friday and Saturday walking around Lake Rotoiti. Today my sights are set on Mt Robert. So lets go. Started from Buller River Bridge at 6.20am to finally get back to Zara at 2.30. Then decided to return home after a stop at Karens for an ice cream. Its been an amazing weekend.

Out for a day walk to find and place a few caches. Spent 30 minutes looking for this below the old shelter site with no luck. Continued on and had a re-check on the way back for another 30 minutes - no luck. Found a promising spot with pistachio nut shells and a greenstone ring.

Rightly or wrongly I replaced the cache and have informed the CO. Awaiting his blessing on this log and will be happy if he see fit to delete this log. I am 99.99% sure the cache was not there.

Cache not at old hut site but down the hill a bit.

26-Dec-17
No luck on this one.

26-Dec-17
No luck here - quite exposed area, with the gps pointing in the middle of the old hut flat, and we checked all the neighbouring likely spots with no luck.

We had two wonderfull days in the Nelson Lakes National Park. We stayed at the very new campside called teetotal, basic but nice. On the second day we did the popular hike to mt roberts and the other way down to the carpark. We found some nice caches but also had two DNFs, but their probably gone.

The highest point we went today. We could have gone further but we started a little late and wanted to go to blenheim in the evening.

Thank you very much for this nice cache on this beautiful hike!

Out for a overnighter to Angelus via Robert Ridge. Beautiful hot day and just catching our breath from the slog up the pinchgut.
Signing our logs as "GRNCK" with 5 geocachers and 1 muggle in the group.

12-Feb-16
An overnight tramp into the Lake Angelus Hut has been planned for a couple of weeks now and I decided to come along for a couple of reasons. Firstly, after only doing day tramps for several years now, I've been wanting to do an overnighter for some time and having the support of some other more experienced trampers gave me confidence to do this. Secondly, I have a major milestone coming up in six caches and one of the caches that we will be doing tomorrow is a fitting cache to achieve this milestone.

When setting this plan into action, I had initially thought of getting an extra couple of caches as a contingency in case we didn't find some of these ones on the track which would have foiled my plan. However the CO of all these caches was supposed to be heading up this way ahead of us today, so I figured he would be checking and replacing any caches that required maintenance or were missing. Earlier today I discovered the CO was not ahead of us so I was very nervous about not finding any of the caches on the way.

There was no reason to be worried here though as in the wide open spaces, the GPS coorinates are spot on. The logs on this trip were signed GRNCK for GH6710, Raisinpig, NZDi, capperz and Kiwimykl. we thought about making it GRUNCK as we had a tame muggle with us who we intended to call Uncle Joe.

The weather was great for tramping today, barely a cloud in the sky and very little wind and the views were fantastic.

12-Feb-16
For quite some time now I've intended to make the trip back up Mount Robert and push on to Angelus Hut with a view to getting on top of Angelus Peak for a peek at the surrounding environment. After a summer so far of some medium walks and getting closer to some of those more challenging treks a few of us decided a Friday arvo trip up, overnight at the hut/in a tent lakeside Angelus, then up on top followed by a trip back down Speargrass to the car park on Saturday was a goer for this weekend.
Caching team was G H 6 7 1 0, Kiwimykl, NZDi, Raisinpig and I, along with a welcome work colleague Joe who was keen for stretching his legs. Logs were signed to save space for all those that come after us as caching initials G R N C K, pronounced 'Grunk'!
Set off from Mount Robert car park at around 1.30PM and arrived at the hut around 7.30 pm after finding 4 caches en route. Beautiful terrain for walking around with perfect weather for seeing all that this wonderful country has to offer.
First up here, and no sign of the hut platform. Decided to leave the one at the skifield buildings for another day, that would a nice side trip for a pleasant day walk and can wait

12-Feb-16
The rest of the RNZAF caching crew from Woodbourne mentioned a plan to take half a day off on Friday to do a tramp in the Nelson Lakes National Park to collect a few caches and with the ultimate aim of gaining a few more Project-GC Altitude points by climbing Angelus Peak, the highest cache in the Marlborough/ Nelson area. So how was I going to get a domestic leave pass to tag along... I know, invite NZDi along as well. Which is why I am now trying to suck the rarified alpine air into my burning lungs after climbing Mount Robert via the 'Pinchgut' route.

Although I must admit that since gaining the instant altitude, the going has been a lot easier and I have managed to catch my breath on the way to this cache. Looking down into the basin at the abandoned skifield buildings, the cache there seems tantilisingly close, but that is a descent that I will have to come back up from and a wise head says this can wait for another day.

As for this cache, with nothing to interfere with the satellite signal when the GPS said zero, I was practically standing on the cache, I hope the rest of them are going to be like this, although I could do with a longer search period for the rest.

The first of our caches along the Robert ridge today, on the way to Lake Angelus. We decided that we didn't have time to head down to the Skifield this trip. Very warm in the afternoon sun, but a nice cool breeze along the ridge too. No trouble with this one today. TFTC

21-Mar-15
Nearly at the end of our tramp in and out to Angelus. Beautiful weather today but a strong cold wind to keep us moving along quickly. Thanks for placing all the caches along this ridge. J of J&G

Up for a day trip, and was going to have lunch here, but no prospect with little shelter from the stiff breeze. I am never sure about the logic of removing shelters on the mountains; I've been to Prospect Ridge Shelter several times (the first almost 40 years ago!) and any structure is a great shelter in a storm.

Thanks for the cache!

09-Nov-13
Having met WEKA at the Bushline Hut (see log in GC2Z9XM), while on a non-geocaching trip, I happened to see them again high on the mountain. In a most helpful manner, they pointed out that I was standing only 30m from a cache!! So I eagerly ran over and duly signed the log. It seems there are many more caches up here than I had suspected. Let's just say "I'll be back". Thanks and cheers from Grandalf(2213)

A quick easy find on a short trip up the Mt Robert Ridge track. The mist had lifted again, and we could see the ski field buildings, raising the question of whether or not to go away down there for the Mt Robert Ski Field cache. TFTC

7th cache ticked off on today's cache raid on Mt Robert. Interesting to learn that the shelter here was removed. Do they still ski in the basin below?

No prospect of the find further down with 3 muggles packing up camp so continued up here with better propects. TFTC #4511

No trouble to find the cache today. Mrs SoBad and isis now had a decision to make - took ohhh 1 second to decide to go onwards and upwards - and later to go down.

The travel-loving part of Peripatetici currently discovered New Zealand.

During the Robert Ridge Route-track, we found this cache.
Actually we found this cache accidentally Big Grin; we let the other caches untouched, because of the lack of a GPSr.
A stunningly beautiful surroundings.
Thanks for the cache.

A fine day forecast so a trip up here was decided. A great day on the mountain despite showers circling us. Plenty of snow on the top still and walking through it mid calf deep at times. We had met a couple whom we had previously chatted to at the Kea shelter on their way back down from here, telling us what a great view but no need to go down to where the old buildings were. If only they knew that's exactly where we were heading, snow and all. TFTC.

11-Oct-12
The forecast was finally good for a day's caching on the mountain with Holymu. Not even a platform to be found. A strange sensation at a place that looks like a carpark but no roads to be found. Still plenty of snow around and although sunny it was cold with an icy wind. TFTC

Battled the wind to get here, lucky the cache didnt end up back near the lake. Quick log and dropped into skifield area to be out of the wind. TFTC.

Battled up to this point in the wind, thinking how tough the club skier used to be!
Didn't have the energy to venture down to visit the huts.

Nice quick cache to find. As I was walking up to the general area, I spotted a suspicious likely-to-hide-a-cache spot, and found this one, without reading the description. En route to Angelus Hut. TFTC

31-Dec-11
A quick find in great weather on a walk in to Lake Angelus. Wonderful view! Signed log, TFTC.

24-Dec-11
FTF [?] [?] [?] Well I think that Mr KE and I are the first geocachers to find this cache although there was a fairly random undated signature in the log book. If that person turns out to be a geocacher, I guess I'll demote my self to 2TF... It was an awesome morning on the mountain today. So different when its not covered in white stuff. Last time we were here we must have been within a few centimetres of the cache but could not reach it. No such problems today. TFTC, Biggles.

24-Dec-11
Biggles and Mr KE had unfinished business with this cache and although it took us a while to get back there was never any question of whether there would be a return visit. Much easier find today when the cache wasn't under half a foot of ice and snow. Awesome day up here today and great cache spot. TFTC.

31-Jul-11
Visited gz in the company of Biggles. No prospect of finding this one today - just too much snow. Beautiful day for a walk though and possibly my most favourite DNF ever. As you probably know by now "I'll be back".

31-Jul-11
Up, around and over Mt Robert ridge to GZ but no way to dig down to the cache through the snow and ice today. Looks like a summertime walk is on the cards for here.
