North Island Campervan trip Day 8
After the fantastic holiday I had a few months ago traveling around the South Island, making the most of one of those incredibly cheap campervan deals available at the time, I figured it was worth taking a week off work before the stresses of the usual holiday period to enjoy some of the delights to be found around the top of the North Island.
This would be a great chance for me to seek out some targeted caches such as the TMGT ones as well as some that would help me with my Jasmer grid, missing minutes (for a couple of challenge caches I'm working on) and any other caches that caught my eye.
Last night I was able to spend the night catching up with friends in Kaiwaka before setting off this morning to head up towards Russell in the Bay of Islands. I haven't been there in over 30 years, and was really looking forward to being there again. In the end I didn't quite get that far today, ending up spending a great night near a beach in Whale Bay.
The first part of my day way to be a casual drive up to Whangarei, making a point of stopping at as many caches along the way as I could, including this one.
I was able to park up and walk over to this one without any fuss, but after spending a few minutes checking number 9 and all the other nearby possible spots I had to leave empty handed.

After spending a couple of days, north of Dargaville, visiting my Parents with the elder Future Finder, its time to make our way back down south finding some caches along the way. The planned route is to leave SH14 and take the back roads out to SH1. So we actually approached this one heading East, rather than North or South. We parked up in the car park and got to searching. It took a while to track this one down, which it really shouldn't have. I think my count was ten rather than nine, but, that is no excuse. Cheers for the cache placement!

Berrydehamster and me are travelling in New Zealand for three weeks. We cross the country from north to south and back again by campervan, see a lot, do a lot, visit lots of places and meet a lot of people. It’s nice to be here and we have a great time.
As both of us are geocachers, we find a lot of caches on our travels. This is one of the caches we found. Thanks for your cache, MiniMaxy & Riser5, that helped give us a wonderful time here.

NLBokkie and I are going on holiday to New Zealand for 3 weeks. In Auckland we rent a camper. We start on the North island and driving to the south to make the crossing to the South island. Here we make a round and then take the boat back to the North Island. A long trip, but a very beautiful one! We do and see a lot on our way.........…
In addition to being a tourist, we are also going to cache along the way. The virtuals and earth caches are often on tourism places. If we have a long day of traveling, we stop for some caches.
It were great weeks!

Found with a sister during our expedition to NZ (from CZ), where we explored part of the North Island and could visit our classmates and friends that we have not seen for several years, as it is here, in Auckland and Napier live ... Thank you for cache ...
I made a list with lots of the Northbound GB1 caches and hit them as I made my way to Whangarei. The CO seems to want to keep us on our toes since this one was not in the uasual position. TFTC.
Had to drop our new rescue kitten off at a cattery before our break at Langs Beach but the one on this road was the only one with any space at such short notice, so that was an extra-long drive. After she had been successfully deposited in her holiday home, I paused at the junction to grab this. Thanks for the first cache of my break!
We left Auckland quite late in the day after my conference was finished. However, having the door code for our accommodation in Whangarei gave us all the time in the world to find a few on the way up! The weather was abysmal, but tunfisk had a new piece of tramping equipment he was keen to test in exactly these conditions, so he was more than happy to do the jumping out of the car We had a great time and the time passed much quicker than expected. TFTC!!
A quick dash and grab, ticking some more local caches off today. Found the GB1 South ones on the way to Ruakaka and the North ones on the way back. TFTC
Lid is missing and a large black spider has made the container its home, and did not wish to leave. I extracted the log, signed and returned all without the spider leaving its abode.

Find number 3926. I was travelling to Paihia for the Country Music Festival and caching along the way. To avoid the Auckland traffic I left home at 3.30 am so didn't start caching until a torch was not required. It was light by the time I pulled up for this one. Once parked up it was an easy find but returning was not so quick. It must have rush hour as I sat and waited for car after car that came and stopped at the intersection. Eventually there was a gap and I was able to place it back. Thank you for the placement.
A quick cache and dash whilst passing on our way north. Thank-you Riser5 for placing this cache for our enjoyment. Out caching with Will of the Wisp on our “Round the World in 80 Days” trip to celebrate retirement. Signing logs with our names or initials depending on space. Greetings from England, TFTC.
Even though I'm heading south, I turned off here. Plenty of parking just behind GZ. Quick find here, cheers
With my uncle (squirrel nutcase) and Gap when we found this cache. A quick find. TFTC.
With Gap (of Fap and Gap) and nerweed... New Years Day.
We managed to make our way south again, and back into action. We are two caches away from completing the 35° South Latitude Challenge. This was one of the missing minutes... We were pleased to find a very safe place to park. This was a super quick find for us. TFTC.

#9554. Heading north through Puwera and stopped for a quick break. Apart from the passing traffic, GZ was all quiet when we visited. Quick find. The cache container lid was missing, but the contents remained dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

I don't have much luck with barrier caches so was not expecting to find. Yay I did find this one.
Well, assuming all is the same, I did not find anything. It really helps reading the hint and looking at your GPS before assuming something...

Good to have safe parking here. Quickly found with good coordinates and the hint, thanks to the previous visitor replacing correctly.
#726 8:09 pm For today's cache I thought I would avenge my twin sails DNF but it was already too dark so I continued on this GZ. Busy road way and parking so I read the hint before approaching. 1, 2, 3, ... 9. Nothing. What!?! Check 10. Nope. Check 8. Bingo. Assuming cache creep I replaced appropriately. On our way back to Whangarei very late after a long day in Akl on Fri 13th. Needed to stop off for a break, so grabbed the chance to get this one.
Road still reasonably busy, just after midnight, but cache was a quick find with the full moon shining bright and we were soon on our way again.

Collecting a few more GB's this trip up North. Cheers.
Next part of the holiday, up to Whangarei and points North. Time to find a few little boxes.....
Thanks to the CO's for the hides. Cheers.

I was heading North for Christmas Lunch in Whangarei and stopped for a few caches along the way. I'm still finding these GB1 caches on my trips to and from Whangarei - not sure how many I've got left to go! A quick find, TFTC!
Back in town after a day caching around the Tutukaka coast. Heading north now on the home straight. This was the turnoff for my school bus when we moved into town but continued at the same school and as I was retrieving the cache, what came along but my old school bus. Easy find here. TFTC
Found with the help of the hint! a busy little intersection and parking area. Travelling with rebel98, filling in some time, as we are waiting for it to get dark, so we can do a night cache at Whangarei
Riser5 you must have shares in a mint manufacturer....never seen so many mint tins ha ha well done thanks
While visiting my children I'll try to do as many caches as possible. Love from South Africa.
#11065. Good to be able to turn off and then turn into a parking area with a barrier. TFTC.
Another glorious day in Northland and today's destination is Marsden Cove and surrounding areas with lots of caches finds both going to and coming from the area.
A very big pull off area here. I headed straight for the end of the barrier, as I didn't have a GPsr to guide me but I was searching the wrong place. Soon found the cache when in the right location. TFTC.

Found it ! Nice hiding place. Did a caching day with the family and this was one of our last. Thanks!!! Paper was full so added a small sheet of lined paper
I've been looking at these few GB1 caches for a while but never had any time to pick up this few. On the way North a few days ago, I checked out a few parking spots on the way pass to see if I can safely get them all on the way South.
Managed to find the caches without to much trouble on the way South. Thanks for the hides.

Hubby got dibs on this one on the way back from a family jaunt to Waiotira.
Was heading up north to return my company car....last day of work.
As I had some extra time I looked for a cache just off the main road and where I could safely park.
Found this one, the funny thing was a few months back I pulled in here to make a phone call, but never checked to see if there was a cache in the area :-p
Cache was quickly found.

Stopped on the way up a week before. But didn't preserver. And thought I must be all wrong. But. This time on ay back. I ventured further. And there it was thanks for the cache and another smiley face.
(1454) Put on a day glow jacket and headed out to grab some road barrier caches. Nice easy find. TFTC
No muggles about, got this on our way north. Pouring with rain but nice easy find.
Todays plan was for a further attempt to increase my unique Minutes for the 400 Minute Challenge in Manawatu. I only needed an extra dozen or so to tip me o=ver the magic mark and, with a plan to head further North than before (whilst a cacher), there was a good chance of success. Built the plan aroubnd the barrier caches spread evenly along the upper S H 1 and also another couple of Letterbox hybrids and an Earth cache at Hikurangi. The hope to also fit in Waipu Cove and Mangawhai Head was a step to far. Settled for 53 caches all up, 23 new minutes so mission accomplished and I can now claim another D/T for my grid. Many thanks to all the C Os whose caches I found today. Got to see some cool sights of lower Northland and help my little missions along. Got all the North ones on the way up and the South ones on the way back down. Yay

Like the family connection in this sequence of GB1 caches. Took me a while, then read the hint, then counted out loud

Busy spot tonight but clever find by our new member to the caching world .. Thanks for the cache
Found ... Mrs McMike2012 & I had a 'Bear Hunt' in Whangarei today & decided to make a day of it ... doing a few caches both on the way up, while we were there & then on the way back ... this being the 4th of 23 for the day. Parked safely, a couple of cars in the parking area but nobody around ... easily located cache ... signed & returned. TN:LN:SL ... TFTC ... #907 for us.
Nice easy find on our way south ..... should have done on way north ....as there is a lovely huge car park ... Man it is too scarey crossing this busy main highway ,,, have had to do it many times with crazy Ric today and my poor muggle friend Pat ...
Thanks for providing safe parks anyway ,,,,,

On my way back to Auckland after a neat Waitangi weekend with work mates, bush walking, eating and drinking plenty of wine and caching off course!
Together with Silli1310 I have been on the road for almost half a year now and have been travelling in beautiful New Zealand for almost 2 months. We started on the South Island and meanwhile we arrived in the North Island and drive north to Cap Reinga. Today morning we started near Ruakaka and followed the route SH1. In order not only to sit in the car we use the possibility to search a cache every now and then and to stretch our legs a little. (Sorry for the very late log)
