We had a Quick Look here but could not easily find it. Given its been a while and a big cyclone since it was last found I think its dubious location next to big seas might have undone it
Attempted this after an all-day cruise. Battery on phone was about 2%, and track was slippery from all the rain. Best guess we could make was somewhere that would NOT have been a 2 terrain. Astro Hunter fell and hurt themselves on the track, so there was little chance of going too far off track, although we did explore a likely looking contender that was reachable. No luck. Better to try this with a fully charged GPS and a dry day
We forgot to download this cache for details and hint... so needed to use our geocache skills to work this one out. This took us Down the rocks... And up the mountain...and in the huge tree...gps bouncing all over the show... Finally one of our kids located it, possibly a little off from location but all in order.
Cache - Dry and all in order. T.F.T.F
Our trip - 3 day trip planned a couple months out for birthday celebrations. We flew in with Barrier air, rented a car to help explore the island.... 3 days after Cyclone Gabrielle we were coming if they allowed us on the island to help clean up or holiday. Road access and tracks we used were open and clear - only access to Tryphena wharf - CLOSED. We did help some locals cleaning up seaweed at Okupu bay whilst the tide was out.

Took the short walk and soon had it done. Thanks for the cache and for bringing us to this remote corner of the world

Easy find. Log sodden and not really able to write on it. Another stunning location on Sgt Barrier
Found with elihyn, richargr and ACL during our weeklong stay at Whangaparapara. Beautiful location. Cache in good order. TFTC
Stayed at the lodge for a few nights. Nice stroll to the wharf on the last morning. Straightforward find with livingk, richargr and ACL.
Thanks for placing the cache

Struggled a bit with this but finally found the boulder, not as big as I had guessed. Cache is all good,, tftc
was a nice bench for people to sit at after reading the story of whaling on the island (with its rather graphic pictures), while I went up the path to go collect this cache. you always wonder what people have been doing when you find miscellaneous rubbish near a cache site. in this instance car brake tubing...
After climbing to the summit of the White Cliffs (Te Ahumata)we drove down to Whangaparapara for our picnic lunch. While MrJAG checked out the photos in the shed, MrsJAG made her way to gz where the cache was soon spotted. Great views from gz
lovely quiet spot today. seagulls nesting on a nearby rock. lunch at a nearby table after walking to the old mill site. tftc all dry and secure.
Nearly didn't find the path, was only thanks to some stairs at the start of the track I noticed it. An amazing amount of history in this bay.
TFTC. A wee trip to paradise.
Caching was just one of the adventures over the few days I was here.
Total paradise.

2nd place we looked - should have trusted the gps! Lovely sound of lapping water. SL TNLN TFTC
After finishing our 3 day tramp we walked here to find the cache. Nice spot. No one around! TFTC
A great quick find in a lovely little spot.
Love the bay, beautiful views in an idealic and peaceful location.
Someone has kindly replaced the old wet log with a dry one.

We walked out from Mt Heale hut today via the tramline track to Aotea Rd. What a mission! We are staying nearby to this cache at Great Barrier Lodge so even though tired we thought we better get this one nearby.
Visiting Great Barrier Island for a few days with some friends - what a delightful place; today was put aside for exploring as far & wide as we could before one of my friends had to return home early.
We stopped here for out 2nd swim of the day; I was helped by a muggle friend who said "the silly round container kept escaping" !!
Thanks, Team Tyke, for placing & maintaining this cache.

Just down from our Great Barrier Lodge accommodation. Love the history and book exchange in the old wharf shed.
Not an easy retrirve. Tftc

Having found the cache at Blind Bay it was back out and up the road to the Whangaparapara Wharf cache. Enjoyed the drive and the local history in the shed at the wharf.
A short wander past the shed and the cache is soon in hand - TNLNSL and left as found.
Just past the cache is a great example of how our pohutukawa grow as on a huge rock there is a very old pohutukawa growing off the front of it - quite magnificent.
Gets a FP for the location and the GBI milling and whaling history lesson.

Visited the Barrier for the first time ever early last year, to catch up on the family ( Claris ) history, but that was before I got hooked on this crazy lark 11 months ago.
I had thought of a return trip to look for the caches, but because there were only 8, it hardly seemed worthwhile. A little while ago though, quite a few new caches were placed and that piqued my interest somewhat. A check a couple of weeks ago indicated that most were still available for FTFs, so a plan was formulated for a two day trip to try and turn the island as yellow as possible. I just hoped the weather would co-operate and amazingly, it did.
After landing on the early flight in and picking up the rental car, I headed northwards up to Windy Canyon and the Mt Hobson track. After a 4 hour trek up and back and successfully finding all those caches, I carried on north to do the rest up there and then headed back down to the south of the island to start the second day's effort.
Eighth up on Friday 13th, was this cache just along from the wharf at Whangaparapara. Bumped into a muggle walker just about at GZ, so carried on for a while before returning to look for the cache. With the good clue, cache was soon found and meant I was able to keep my 100% GBI streak going

Out and about with Funkymunkyzone, Gorby and mikemiss as we explore Great Barrier Island. We had a blast hiking, sight seeing and caching over a three day weekend. After an extensive search and in light off all the DNFs on the cache page we concluded that this one was MIA. We decided to replace with one of our own containers. Hid based on coordinates and hint. Cheers for the cache placements!
Had a look around for this one but it seems it really isn't here, so we figured the best plan was to replace for the CO and so more visitors can come and enjoy this spot and find the cache. We replaced with a 500ml rubbermaid container with log sheet. TFTC
After an extensive search of the area, we realised that this one was in fact missing. We decided we'd replace this one on behalf of the CO in a secure spot still in line with the hint. TFTC!
Came to Great Barrier Island with some fellow cachers for 3 days and 2 nights. FMZ, Lostcourse and Mr and Mrs mike-miss. we've hired a vehicle for the time here and working our way around the island visiting this and that.
This island is much bigger than I first imagined! There is much driving to do and the roads are very windy and undulate much! So it is always nice to exit the car when there are 3 people sitting in the backseat. So after a brief walk to this cache, it certainly seems there can be only one spot that fits the hint and where the GPS was pointing. We gave that area a very good search before deciding we'd leave a suitable container to replace the one previous. We have been carrying around an assortment of caches, not only to replace ones missing but to place a few ourselves.
it's starting to get darkish now, it's drizzly wet weather but the spirits are high for this and the next cache to follow at Kauri waterfall.

Think this one has gone, we searched for ages and using hint etc we are sure we were in the right location.
After finding 5 caches here on GBI this was my 2nd DNF for the day! Most depressing especially as I was trying to introduce a couple of newbies to the world of Geocaching.
Came over to the island to do a 4 day tramp and stayed at the nearby lodge on the last night - beautiful bay and all good once spotted the little track. TFTC
Found after a trip to hot pools. Took us a while to work out where the path was and which "left" it was but got there
After a fantastic weekend on the Island, we decided to grab one more cache before we headed to the ferry - and home.
After a few windy roads and a few cars coming the other way on the wrong side of the road, we found GZ, and decided to take the most indirect route to the cache possible!
Never mind - we soon had the cache in hand and we on our way.
The end of a a great weekend, which saw us secure 4 caches on one of our 40ths and secure our 4000th cache! All about the 4s!!!!

On the island for a few days getting outdoors and loving it. After going over to opuku cache we decided to fit this one in before dark. This is the last one one island for us..and another lovely spot, crystal clear water. The track took a little spotting but I found it. Soon cache was in hand, but glad I have long limbs! Cache was damp with full wet log so gave it a clean and put a bagged replacement log in there. Thanks for the cache and helping us explore the island!
found today stayed in this bay while on the island lucky as it took me 2 visits to find the cache trust the gps tftf
Found with kiwitrecker1 whilst exploring the island. The track wasn't obvious from where we parked so we relied on the GPS and went via the rocks on the coastline. Easily found from that angle (after a brief scurry up the slope) and so too was the track which we then followed out. Thanks for bringing us here the view of the harbour was fantastic!
Found it but the hint said by a big bolder on the right but it was by a big bolder on the left and found it with 3 other mates
Took a bit of searching for but got it in the end, should have trusted the GPS more it was spot on!!! TFTC
Found the path via the rocks, cache was easy to find thanks to the clear directions though. Great harbour with some well maintained (and some not) walks
We have just kayaked across the chanel and are settling in to camp at The Green. I had difficulty finding the track at first as it's a but overgrown, but eventually found the cache thanks to the clue. The log sheet is full - needs a new one. T4TC - M@
The men of the time had a few days on Great Barrier tramping around and staying at the DOC huts and campground. Stashed their packs in the bush so they wouldn't have to carry them and headed off to get ice-creams. No problem with finding the cache and a great place to have a rest before picking up the packs again and heading off. TFTC
Were a little off course to start, but soon in hand. Full house on bingo card. TFTC
We spent two nights in the bay in "Pinball Wizard", and enjoyed a walk up the Tramway Track to the Forestry Rd and back. There is an amazing stand of regenerating kauri on the Forestry Rd. It was a bit of a scramble to get to the cache as we missed the track and climbed over the rocks at low tide, but the trusty GPS got us to the right place. Left a little dolphin. TFTC
Had just finished our three day tramp and was waiting to be picked up to go back to the airport. Found GZ and possible hiding places but just not the right one. I wil put it down to being tired and not really in the mood to rock hop or crawl around. Great location.
We have been on the Island for 8 days and have not had internet service, so are a little late logging our finds. Monk-eee appears to be following us a day or two behind. At first we did not find the track, so went rock hopping, then cut in from the shore. The track then became obvious. First we found what looked like a Megacache, which turned out to be an empty paint bucket. Then found the cache. Cleverly hidden. Returned to car park by the ,now found, track.
Found originally as part of rebel98 team, now created own account, re-logging as rustynz
See rebel98 log below. Got to kayak over to the nearby whalers station. Walked to the hot pools, and got to find this cache. Thanks again for the hide. Loving this place.

Catching up on forgotten logs - found with nzkeko on 'man-trip' away from home after not too much trouble taking wrong path down but enjoying the good company of nzkeko on the island. Had a fabulous time caching together and seeing the place top to bottom TNLN

Easily located. Left a pirate coin to hang out in this suitably nautical spot. TFTC.
