My first time and probably last up here! Incorrectly assumed the summit area was not far from the buliding and aerials you can see from the approach road, its quite a bit further on! Very obvious hiding place at GZ that I searched several times without success. Young fit tramping couple resting at the summit joined in the search still without success. Good cellphone coverage in the area and both my cellphone GPS and Garmin GPS suggested the obvious hiding spot. Left the carpark about 10am and was overtaken by the young fit tramping couple while searching for the cache about half an hour from the carpark. returned about 2.30pm after spending about an hour on the top and having countless stops to admire the view and catch my breath. Track is rough and uneven above the treeline with a couple of steep sections.
It looks like the cache is missing. My health prevents me from checking/replacing the cache at the moment, so disabling for now.
Found it easily bit very waterlogged so needs maintenance desperatly, cool spot though

A bunch of us had really good hunt up here, GZ had several likely possibilities but no cache was to be found. Given previous logs we are wondering if its gone
wasn't having the best caching weekend phone wasn't doing its job properly so was in two mind if I should attempt this one only with the hint to go on ( how hard could it be!) . just over an hour and half later I was at the top and started my search and having made it I wasn't going away with out it . unfortunately it wasn't in the first place I looked was able to measure the distance in the hint using a phone app so it did narrow the search area ( only just).
finally spotted it lying on its side exposed to the elements half full of water log book un usable so I took a photo to prove the find .
didn't bring a spare log book with me so if your planning on going for this please take a new book and bag with u I have moved the cache approx. 5m to a more protected place .
it was another hot day and great views that deserve a fav point tftc

Took 1h25mins to run/walk to the top and 2h30mins round trip. No views at the top due to fog. Was also a little cold. Coming down I got myself off trail twice due to not seeing the route poles. Cache and logbook was wet. Dried out what I could but being no sun and it was cold I couldn't hang around. Was located to been seen by anyone. Covered with a few more light rocks. Tftc
Beautiful day, fantastic views. Snow underfoot at this time. Managed to find despite the snow. This was a day trip that I made with the Tramping Club.
Logging now for a trip with KR back then. Was an awesome day altho wasn't yet a member. Tftc
A sunny day, no wind and another 3 couples on the mountain. A nice walk but very sore feet afterwards, especially after getting half way down and discovering that I'd left my GPS on the picnic table 2/3 of the way up. Thanks for the hide.
Found easily after a 3 hour grind to the summit on a hot day. Loved it!!! Views to die for, and watched several groups of parachuters. Awesome.

A great trip on the first legal day after lambing. Not bad weather on the way up but it was very cold and windy having lunch at the top It took 2.00 hrs to get up and 1hr 20 to get back down again.
The cache was 1/3 full of water, I suspect that may be somthing to do with temperature change while buried under the snow over winter. Fortunatly the collection of spiders suspended the log book above water level and all is bone dry inside the bag. I dried everything out pretty well and it should be all set for the summer.
This is also the first of my Ramblers Reward caches http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=d2b1bcdd-6c4c-404d-ba4d-cd8148fd2d2a
Cheers and thanks for putting a cache in this great spot.

even though I could only manage snails pace, which masohold was very patient with me, we made it to the top. was very rewarding opening the cache
Climbed up here with TikvaNZ and his 2 boys. Took 2hrs 20mins from the car park with many stops. From the observatory level up to the summit the track was snow n ice covered. Interesting to see that the wild animal populace (rabbits and possums)use the track as there footprints were frozen in the snow. Great views from the summit on this cloudless and windless day.

On a caching expedition to here with BaldEd and my two youngest boys. A perfect day to be heading up into the hills. Great views. TFTC.
Counting this as ramble #4 for the

Found with Old Boots help during an Avon Tramping club tramp to the summit. One of 3 finds on the track. Cloudy on the way up. Good views of Mts Somers & Winterslow and Mt Hutt ski field. Cache in excellent condition. TFTC
Went for a walk this morning to the top and back. Had mist most of the way up which made spotting the trail markers darn hard. Clouded in at the top.
Following Grandalf's advice, have replaced the container with a more weatherproof one. The log book has also been replaced with a dry one.
Bit of a hazy day, but still a great climb.

Aha, lambing is over, and it still isn't found. Well, I'm off - can't resist a good climb, despite a cool NW breeze. Made it from the carpark to the summit in 1hr 50min - must be slowing down these days. It's a lovely walk, though some people would find it a bit steep, and the views are excellent. The trail is well marked (except for a tiny bit about halfway up). The wind on top was brisk - needed instant donning of jersey and parka. The cachebox was found - and found to be full of water. I'll email the owner as to why that was, and how to fix it. Until the box is renewed, all cachers should LEAVE IT ON ITS SIDE so it doesn't fill up again.
However, I did manage to sign the logbook as FTF after wringing it out!! Then a faster journey down, and home for cold beer. Thanks and cheers from Grandalf(2058)

Sorry Have added a link to http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/canterbury/mid-and-south-canterbury/mt-alford-track/ in the description -- this should have up-to-date track closure information.
Edit: this from DoC:
The correct dates are the 20th September to 20th October. The dates on
the sign are to ensure that if either 20th occurs on a weekend then the
track is closed or opened on the closest working day.
I will have the sign replaced for the next season as it will be removed
on the 20th October.
